Spacious, comfortable, and efficient? Volkswagen ID.7 full review

  • VW's flagship EV saloon/sedan is here, and it's a beast! The ID.7 aims to offer a comfortable, spacious, smooth ride with enough infotainment improvements to answer some of the criticisms previous ID cars have received.
With a new motor and sleek body, VW are saying it can achieve 386 miles, and with massage seats it should ease the tension from even the most stressed road warrior.
But with a big price tag, can it compete with EVs like the Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, and BMW i4? And does it really need to, or have VW set their sights higher?

    I have a BMW i4 and wouldn’t consider swapping to the ID7.
As you touched on, VW’s design department need a bit of inspiration, they have the designers elsewhere in the group, for example the Cupra Born looks better inside and out compared to it’s sibling ID3.
They could do with a unique selling point or be competitive on price but they seem happy to sit back and let others lead the way on both fronts.
    Great Video though Andrew 👍

BMW should lose some LEDs in their cockpit. They are much too blinki-blinki. The front has two big holes in it. When will BMW close those? And when will they price their cars for the masses and not for the real german gentleman company owner?

Great review, has the footage been speeded up? As with all ID cars, the list price is massive. For a button free environment. I don't equate haptic buttons and sliders with premium.

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

For some reason, one of my cameras was set to 50fps. I've no idea why, but that caused a slight chipmunk effect in the internal shots. I took ages trying to sort it but gave up in the end!
And I agree with you that premium, for me at least, means classy tactile buttons. It seems those days are long gone based on all the new cars coming along now. Buttons are a dying breed.

The Korean brands seem to be holding onto proper buttons, (switches, dials, tumble, toggle) along with where appropriate touch sensitive screen , jog dial and haptic. Look at the variety of buttons and switch gear on an GV60 for instance - it’s pure ergonomics. The right control for the appropriate operation. It’s a master class on how it should be done.

Good review, will be interesting to see what the estate version is like too. Parts of this remind me of my Enyaq, which is no surprise as they’re both MEB platform cars. The infotainment system is very similar, and the ambient lighting, which I really like. One thing I noticed with the ambient lights which I thought was quite cool, was if you open a door, it changes the light on that door to red from whatever it was set to, as a warning light for pedestrians or traffic.

This is obviously aimed towards the lease market, however based on the list price VW have really misjudged. This is currently around the mid £700's/month based on a 4 year lease which is senior manager levels, who are always going to choose Tesla / Audi / BMW / Mercedes over this. VW are a family brand and that market would not be spending this sort of money for a saloon. It's about £15-20k too expensive (lease/pcp target cost circa £400-500 / month), expect to see heavy discounting from the dealers and lots of pre-reg deals on 24 plate cars coming in May/June & July onwards.

Nice review. I’m glad they’ve had a good go at the software side of things. I rented an I.D.3 from the MK EV experience centre back when it was open for business. Took it to Hull and back. The second day I was due to go north the infotainment system would not boot up. Nice a car a bit basic and rattly inside with decent range. The software was pants. I’ve test driven the I.D.4 and liked it a lot, but again pants software. So this puppy looks close to the mark and is very Tesla like in many ways.
Questions: what is the cost of the route navigation system per annum? Can it see which spots have restaurants near by and what chargers are in use? Can it route through Europe and plan in hotels, restaurants etc. ChargeMap is the only app I’ve found that you can set filters on things like restaurants with rapid or fast chargers and the like.

Not over enamoured by the looks but still tempting. Its 20cm longer than the Tesla model 3 and (after 4 years) I'm still not quite used to having such a long car. However, for the executive/sales rep/family market, this looks the part. I'm also in favour of some real buttons - touch screens are all well and good for set up, less good if you need to access anything quickly thats not automatic, or the automation is too slow - say, windscreen wipers, headlights (because its raining but not dark enough), heating controls. would have to try out the VW controls to see what its like.
EV manufacturers need to get together and come up with some realistic way of measuring range. My Model 3 is supposed to have 295 miles worth of range (even seen it quoted as 305). Its certainly north of 200. If you charge to 100% and drive it until its 0% I guess you should make 250miles / 400 kms but nobody drives any car until its empty. Still, quoting ranges 50-100 miles more than that is optimistic. I take all the ranges (especially WLTP) with a fairly large pinch of salt.

The Korean brand EGMP vehicles have good range, great charging speed and great standard tech - the EV6 Horizon in 4.680m in length is saloon like, the ionic 5 4.635m and great for headroom, rear cabin space and boot space (more boxy) the GV60 is 4.515m much more compact and luxurious but still ample rear cabin space and boot space ( a 4 member family into camping might struggle with the space offered by the GV60 but a 3 member family or less perfect) all do 300+ miles and have 800v architecture for really fast charging. The options list can get you HUD, self parking, HDA2 and a suite of cross traffic and advance camera safety features. These are pricy new but future proofed to an extent but some great second deals will be available now as all three have been available in the UK for atleast 18 months.

The infotainment is clear and bright but the bezels are huge. In contrast, the display on the Tesla expands to the width of the screen with very tiny bezels. The always on components are transparent. I just wish it wasn't positioned raised above the sight line of the dash.
I really like the ergo active seat with the separate head rest. I just wish they came with solid back rather than the non kid kick resistant cloth. Wish it had a pair of iPad holders to retrofit a bit of entertainment to the limousine rear compartment. A power tilt/telescoping steering wheel would be nice even as an option.
On the con side, I'm not at all a fan on a sunroof that doesn't open, or the trend that removes the spare tire. Another EV limitation.

Andrew, nice review, would have liked have seen your assistant scowl at you but it was chilly! But lets talk real, who can afford one with the high depreciation of EV's. We paid £31k for our premium Kona 5 years ago, and they have put a new main batt into it 1 year ago. So why should we look for another car for say 5 years. Kona does everything we want.

Knee room in the rear looks good, but on reflection, your feet look high - so no support to the backs of your legs. I sat in an EV6 and found the same - the 'thick floor' for housing the batteries tends to actually lose leg comfort. I'm 6'4" so this is even worse for me. I can only really be comfortable in SUV styles for the seat 'height'.
