"I never understood packing anything going into the military." That's what I thought when I enlisted, and then it took us three days to form the boot company. After that we didn't get uniforms until the end of that first week. Those uniforms did not include underwear. You bet I wish I'd at least brought a change of underwear. Also they charge you for the uniforms, for meals and the bunk you are assigned to. Preemptively taken out of your pay. So, no pay for the first month you're in. I had to file paperwork for a pay advance to buy socks and underwear.
I mention this every time somebody posts starship troopers. The guy that got his head blown off during the “live fire exercise” and the woman who blew his head off met on set, fell in love, and are still married to this day.

The guy at the beginning, whom you said you knew, but didn't know where you knew him from, is actor Michael Ironside. You probably remember him as "Jester" in the first Top Gun movie. He also starred in the movie "Total Recall" with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
"The cousin from Friends" is Denise Richards. She was basically the "it" girl of the late 90s, especially after getting a part in the James Bond movie "The World Is Not Enough" & a VERY SPICY part in "Wild Things".
I think you'll find this entertaining as a fellow reader. This movie is great example of a bad adaptation of the source material, but a great film at the end of the day. I read the book because it was on the suggested reading list for US Army Non-Commissioned Officers back when I was trying to get my stripes. The book is an examination of military leadership. We watch Rico work his way up through the ranks (over a much larger time line). We see Ricos good and bad leaders, and then examine how he folds those lessons learned into his own leadership style upon taking command. It is a great read if you're in the military or interested in leadership, but I think your average civilian reader may find it dry and a bit boring. Contrast that with the film, which is an inspection of propaganda and fascism's effect on coming of age. We watch multiple bright eyed and excited young adults join the military expecting an adventure and find the horrors of war, especially wars of extermination. The film shows how war can make anyone a fascist and can make excuses a lot more palatable behind the facade of "the greater good." Apparently director Paul Verhoeven was one such civilian who hated the book, hence the very loose adaptation. Again, a poor adaptation of the book, but wound up being an excellent film.

The best actor in this movie is Clancy Brown.. he´s captain Hadley, he was in the Shawshank Redemption, he was in John Wick 4 and he's the voice of Mr. Krabs in Spongebob Squarepants
I love how he you can see quite a bit of Hadley in his performance here, but he also makes them very distinct. Hadley is a sadist, Zim is very much tough love. He's hard on the recruits because he wants them to survive. You feel he genuinely cares for them. Everyone playing a drill instructor after Full Metal Jacket also takes a lot of ques from Sergeant Hartman, but again, Zim has a lot of distinction.
This has the same director as _Total Recall, Robocop,_ and _Showgirls._ The guy from _Contact_ is the son of the bad guy from _Lethal Weapon._ Did you recognize the training instructor as the head of the Shawshank guards?
As others have mentioned, the origins of this movie comes from a book, written by prolific golden-era Robert A. Heinlein. Much of his literary production was aimed at adolescents (meaning boys, because of the time when they were written, IE 1939 up to and including most of the end of the 1950s.) By that time, his outlook on life and politics had taken a different tack, and he wanted to address a more mature audience. Starship Troopers was his first "adult oriented" book, published in 1959, and has often been described as a parody/satire of fascism. However, Heinlein espoused his own book's virtues on several occasions, including the no citizenship/voting without service (in the book meaning not just military service though), and corporal punishment, so should not be considered so much satire as pretty much the real thing. The oath of service as seen and heard in the movie is taken pretty much word-for-word from the book as I recall, by the way. The book doesn't actually describe a whole lot of battles or fighting aliens, most of it is a fairly dull treatise on military life in a future where democratic society supposedly collapsed because of its moral decadence, including lengthy descriptions of the tactics and training of "mobile infantry" - which in the book means men in large, heavy and very well-armed power-armor suits which are vacuum proof and dropped in individual pods from orbit, and the navy that flies them throughout the galaxy. Even a Hollywood budget did not allow for such extravagancy in the mid-1990s, so the soldiers there just wear standard body armor - which admittedly works better for an action movie as it ramps up the tension when people get pulped left and right... :P There's also a great many descriptions of classes (or what I'd rather describe as indoctrination sessions) in "history and moral philosophy" where "teachers" described in the book as particularly wise/intelligent present thoughtful problems and/or dilemmas to some of the characters in the book, including Johnny Rico. It's not so easy to dismiss Heinlein's personal opinions as your typical garden variety fascist though - he was not. For starters, Rico in the book is actually a latino, with brown skin, and Heinlein himself was a nudist in an open relationship with his second wife, and wrote several books late in life exploring topics like incest and other controversial matters. He was a smart, quirky guy who in his later years turned into a libertarian and an authoritarian. The movie definitely IS satire though - including the character of Carl literally wearing a Gestapo leather overcoat and hat later in the story. Little of the book remains other than things like the names of certain characters, the "history and moral philosophy" class in school, Rico getting lashed ("administrative punishment"), and the hierarchical nature of the "bugs"; in part because director Paul Verhoeven hated the book and thought it was trash when he tried to read it - understandably, considering he grew up under German occupation during WWII. Even as thick as the movie lays it on, lots of people misunderstood the movie when it came out originally and thought it fascist propaganda. Which just goes to show how true Poe's Law is. ;)

Actually really surprised to find you hadnt at least heard of Starship Troopers the book by Robert A. Heinlein. Its considered a classic in the science fiction genre and to this day still heavily inspires the Military Science Fiction sub-genre. The movie has almost nothing to do with the book aside from some names and plot points here and there. In fact the movie leaves out one of the biggest influences of the book, powered combat armor for the Mobile Infantry. Heinlein may not have been the first person to use power armor in literature but this book popularized it.
Yes, Jake Busey--who plays Ace--was the creepy fundamentalist guy who blew up the machine in Contact. You might recognize Career Sergeant Zim--Clancy Brown--as the Kurgan from Highlander, Captain Hadley from The Shawshank Redemption, or as the voice of Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob. He's even voiced Lex Luthor a couple times.
I highly recommend reading the book Starship Troopers. It does have some significant differences from the movie but as a reader you will absolutely love it.
People often call other people by their last name. That's why you heard them call him Johnny and Rico. Seen so many movie reactors get confused by that!

Did you happen to catch how the war started? It's pretty subtle, but they do basically give you the information. Earth was expanding and colonizing farther out into space. When we Terrans got to the Bug Planets, we started killing the resident Bug inhabitants. They fought back, and we got more aggressive. The Bugs started shifting asteroids, aiming them at Earth; it was defensive against Terran aggression. Basically, we were the aggressors and the invaders. The drill sergeant (the one you thought was the creepy guy in "Contact") is played by Clancy Brown; Clancy also played the prison guard who was inheriting $35,000 from his brother in "The Shawshank Redemption". The private who played the violin (the second one you thought was the creepy guy) is played by Jake Busey, who DID play the creepy religious fanatic in "Contact". He's also the real life son of Gary Busey.
Nice try, commie, but no. The bugs are the aggressors. In fact - this is more of a case of "both races are tough, and smart, and after the same real estate". So no - it wasn't a case of the Evil Federation expanding and the Poor, innocent HAMASchnids "just defending themselves". It was a case of the arachnids trying to expand to the same territory the Federation was interested in, and attacking Earth (only in the book, they have actual FTL spaceships, and in the film they are dumb animals, so it was handwaved away with the asteroid thing, but no - the BA strike wasn't a psy-op, it wasn't a false flag - the bugs attacked Earth because they did it in the book, and changing the nature of arachnids created a plot hole - that's all).
3:23 - That is Michael Ironside. He is the man!!! He is awesome in everything he does. The whole drop sequence is my favorite. I just love the music that plays. This movie is such a great satire on fascism. There has been speculation that the War on the Arachnids was actually orchestrated by the humans and that the humans were the aggressors.

when this came out most critics and much of the audience didn't understand this film. Like Robocop being a satire about the dangers of corporations run amok and privatizing essential government functions (like the police), Starship Troopers was *satire* about fascism.
right on cue the "Starship Troopers is a satire of fAsCiSm" crowd shows up. No, sir, Starship Troopers is most definetely NOT a satire of fascism, for the simple fact that the society depicted in the film is a polar opposite of fascism. Sure - Verhoven WANTED to make a satire of fascism - that's why the good looking actors are wearing getups reminiscent of SS and Gestapo uniforms, but that's the extent of it. If you actually look at the Federation as depicted in the film, there is nothing fascistic about it. The service is not only entirely volountary, but you can quit at any time. Not only that - the essential part that the lefties miss, is that service cannot be denied, because it is one's constitutional right to try and earn one's citizenship. So instead of rewarding loyalty with privileges, while strictly controling what the population is allowed to do, the UCF is happy to leave people to their own devices. The only point of contention is that the right to vote/hold public office is reserved for those who are willing to accept responsibility for it. It's not a question of "support us, and you get to vote" - it's a question of "accept responsibility for the state if you wish to exert influence over it".
How can Denise Richard’s character even move that arm or not bleed out from the 2 inch wide spike that went through her shoulder blade. Barely even any pain responses.
It's a BOOK! Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein. You should read it, if you enjoy a good Sci-Fi book. Hell Divers is inspired by the Book, not the movie, thus the differences.
on the contrary - Helldivers was definetely inspired by the film - the book uses powered armor, and half of it is dedicated to explaining the ideology of the Federation. Also - Helldivers is an actual satire, where the happy face of Super Earth is just a front for a totalitarian regime masquerading as a democracy. Starship Troopers is an actual utopia where the right to vote is limited to those willing to accept responsibility for it.
It is based on a book by Robert A. Heinlein. He was also a former naval officer in addition to being a sci fi writer. A lot of people considered him an extreme right winger because of the book and some ideas of his. However, he also wrote “Stranger in a Strange Land.” A book considered to be very left wing/counter culture.

This movie is so outrageous, but a joy to watch. A little movie trivia. When the cast resisted doing the co-ed shower scene, they said they would do the scene if the director was also nude. So Verhoeven agreed and directed the scene in the nude for the shower scene.
At the beginning when you said you knew what this movie was about, I was expecting you to say you had read the books. lol And as for are there more of these movies?... I'll leave you with this... "424, 425, 426, 427, 428..."

The story I always heard when they were making this, was that Paul Verhoven was already in pre production for the movie when somebody said, hey, that sounds a lot like Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein. So they looked up the story and bought the rights to incorporate some of the ideas from the book into the movie. The book is much better and very different from the movie
Check the credits again. This is based on a novel by an author you might recognize. Since you’re a bookworm, you might want to read the novel. The trilogy story arc is really interesting even if the budget dropped the quality.
My mom rented me this movie when I was about 10, thinking it was like Star Wars. It was not like Star Wars. To her credit, she made it to the brain bug part before she shut it off.
Starship Troopers is great fun and I'm not sure why it kind of bombed when it was released, I'm guessing if I looked up what movies it was up against I might have a clue. It's the first movie that had pretty convincing CGI, in my opinion. I thought the leads all did a great job and the secondary characters like the teacher and drill instructor were great.
You pointed out the pregnant soldier, and I never recall noticing them before. Immediately my mind went to them saying that becoming a citizen was an easy way to get a license to have a baby. Maybe they got illegally pregnant and are serving a tour to get permission

You made a mistake. The creepy guy from Contact is played by Jake Busey, Gary Busey's son. The sergeant here is played by Clancy Brown, a very awesome and underrated actor. Appeared in many things. The creepy guy plays Ace in this movie. Took you a few minutes. Lol
This film is such a hilarious reference to the military industrial complex and indoctrination and propaganda, down to the German style uniforms. "Would you like to know more?"
Not really. It tries to. However, it has too much of the source material to pull it off. The book is a classic and should be required reading in HS. The "military complex" isn't really in the book, nor the movie. The "founders" were not part of industrial military complex. They were soldiers who returned from war, and saw the falsehood of the wars they were involved in, and the corruption of civilian leadership that had no stakes in the destruction those wars had caused. They established that if you would have that power, you had to be willing to possibly die for the ability. So, if you want franchise(vote for representatives), or hold public office, you have to have first served a term of civil service. Be it military, digging ditches, or being a human guinea pig. It will be difficult, dangerous, or strenuous, and most likely all three.
The uniforms being “Germanic” is a result of Verhoeven’s life experience. As a kid, he grew up under the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. He used the look and visual style to drive home the satirical over-the-top nature of the “good guys” and the idea of Fascism in the movie.
There are sequels but, they're more oriented on making money off the brand name rather than being good films. You could very easily skip watching them and not really miss out on anything.
In hindsight the assault rifle in Starship Troopers is exactly the WRONG weapon to use against the bugs. Shotguns and flame throwers, something with a bigger spread would be more ideal.

One of the most underrated sci-fi films of all time. Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer and Jake Busey are all very kind in real life.

If I recall, he's the villain in Highlander. He's great as the drill instructor in Starship Troopers.

Actually really surprised to find you hadnt at least heard of Starship Troopers the book by Robert A. Heinlein. Its considered a classic in the science fiction genre and to this day still heavily inspires the Military Science Fiction sub-genre. The movie has almost nothing to do with the book aside from some names and plot points here and there. In fact the movie leaves out one of the biggest influences of the book, powered combat armor for the Mobile Infantry. Heinlein may not have been the first person to use power armor in literature but this book popularized it.
Yes, Jake Busey--who plays Ace--was the creepy fundamentalist guy who blew up the machine in Contact. You might recognize Career Sergeant Zim--Clancy Brown--as the Kurgan from Highlander, Captain Hadley from The Shawshank Redemption, or as the voice of Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob. He's even voiced Lex Luthor a couple times.
I highly recommend reading the book Starship Troopers. It does have some significant differences from the movie but as a reader you will absolutely love it.

Did you happen to catch how the war started?
It's pretty subtle, but they do basically give you the information.
Earth was expanding and colonizing farther out into space. When we Terrans got to the Bug Planets, we started killing the resident Bug inhabitants. They fought back, and we got more aggressive. The Bugs started shifting asteroids, aiming them at Earth; it was defensive against Terran aggression. Basically, we were the aggressors and the invaders.
The drill sergeant (the one you thought was the creepy guy in "Contact") is played by Clancy Brown; Clancy also played the prison guard who was inheriting $35,000 from his brother in "The Shawshank Redemption".
The private who played the violin (the second one you thought was the creepy guy) is played by Jake Busey, who DID play the creepy religious fanatic in "Contact". He's also the real life son of Gary Busey.
Nice try, commie, but no. The bugs are the aggressors. In fact - this is more of a case of "both races are tough, and smart, and after the same real estate". So no - it wasn't a case of the Evil Federation expanding and the Poor, innocent HAMASchnids "just defending themselves". It was a case of the arachnids trying to expand to the same territory the Federation was interested in, and attacking Earth (only in the book, they have actual FTL spaceships, and in the film they are dumb animals, so it was handwaved away with the asteroid thing, but no - the BA strike wasn't a psy-op, it wasn't a false flag - the bugs attacked Earth because they did it in the book, and changing the nature of arachnids created a plot hole - that's all).

when this came out most critics and much of the audience didn't understand this film. Like Robocop being a satire about the dangers of corporations run amok and privatizing essential government functions (like the police), Starship Troopers was *satire* about fascism.

No, sir, Starship Troopers is most definetely NOT a satire of fascism, for the simple fact that the society depicted in the film is a polar opposite of fascism.
Sure - Verhoven WANTED to make a satire of fascism - that's why the good looking actors are wearing getups reminiscent of SS and Gestapo uniforms, but that's the extent of it.
If you actually look at the Federation as depicted in the film, there is nothing fascistic about it. The service is not only entirely volountary, but you can quit at any time. Not only that - the essential part that the lefties miss, is that service cannot be denied, because it is one's constitutional right to try and earn one's citizenship.
So instead of rewarding loyalty with privileges, while strictly controling what the population is allowed to do, the UCF is happy to leave people to their own devices. The only point of contention is that the right to vote/hold public office is reserved for those who are willing to accept responsibility for it. It's not a question of "support us, and you get to vote" - it's a question of "accept responsibility for the state if you wish to exert influence over it".

It's a BOOK! Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein. You should read it, if you enjoy a good Sci-Fi book. Hell Divers is inspired by the Book, not the movie, thus the differences.
on the contrary - Helldivers was definetely inspired by the film - the book uses powered armor, and half of it is dedicated to explaining the ideology of the Federation. Also - Helldivers is an actual satire, where the happy face of Super Earth is just a front for a totalitarian regime masquerading as a democracy. Starship Troopers is an actual utopia where the right to vote is limited to those willing to accept responsibility for it.
It is based on a book by Robert A. Heinlein. He was also a former naval officer in addition to being a sci fi writer. A lot of people considered him an extreme right winger because of the book and some ideas of his. However, he also wrote “Stranger in a Strange Land.” A book considered to be very left wing/counter culture.

Hey James, I'm not sure how much science fiction you've read, but I should also point out that this movie's loosely based on the novel of the same title by Robert Heinlein
One of the very few times a movie was adapted from a book, was only vaguely like the source material, and still turned out to be a great flick.
Great movie. You should also watch Total Recall from the same director. Also watch Highlander with the guy who plays Sgt. Zim as the bad guy.

This movie is so outrageous, but a joy to watch. A little movie trivia. When the cast resisted doing the co-ed shower scene, they said they would do the scene if the director was also nude. So Verhoeven agreed and directed the scene in the nude for the shower scene.
I saw troopers and thought it was the other one I'm like were in for a laugh but this one is bad ass 💯

The story I always heard when they were making this, was that Paul Verhoven was already in pre production for the movie when somebody said, hey, that sounds a lot like Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein. So they looked up the story and bought the rights to incorporate some of the ideas from the book into the movie.
The book is much better and very different from the movie

My mom rented me this movie when I was about 10, thinking it was like Star Wars. It was not like Star Wars. To her credit, she made it to the brain bug part before she shut it off.
Starship Troopers is great fun and I'm not sure why it kind of bombed when it was released, I'm guessing if I looked up what movies it was up against I might have a clue. It's the first movie that had pretty convincing CGI, in my opinion. I thought the leads all did a great job and the secondary characters like the teacher and drill instructor were great.
My game related to this show. Earth Defenses Force 4.1, 5 or the up coming 6. I think Hell Divers 2 need there military upgraded in fire power.

This film is such a hilarious reference to the military industrial complex and indoctrination and propaganda, down to the German style uniforms. "Would you like to know more?"

Not really. It tries to. However, it has too much of the source material to pull it off.
The book is a classic and should be required reading in HS.
The "military complex" isn't really in the book, nor the movie.
The "founders" were not part of industrial military complex. They were soldiers who returned from war, and saw the falsehood of the wars they were involved in, and the corruption of civilian leadership that had no stakes in the destruction those wars had caused.
They established that if you would have that power, you had to be willing to possibly die for the ability.
So, if you want franchise(vote for representatives), or hold public office, you have to have first served a term of civil service.
Be it military, digging ditches, or being a human guinea pig.
It will be difficult, dangerous, or strenuous, and most likely all three.
The uniforms being “Germanic” is a result of Verhoeven’s life experience. As a kid, he grew up under the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. He used the look and visual style to drive home the satirical over-the-top nature of the “good guys” and the idea of Fascism in the movie.
There are sequels but, they're more oriented on making money off the brand name rather than being good films. You could very easily skip watching them and not really miss out on anything.

In hindsight the assault rifle in Starship Troopers is exactly the WRONG weapon to use against the bugs. Shotguns and flame throwers, something with a bigger spread would be more ideal.
The movie version NO. The Book version HELL YES.
