This is the movie that made Julia Roberts an A-List leading lady. Richard Gere was already an established A-List leading man for around a decade since An Officer and a Gentleman.
Her calling the orchestra a band is one of my favorite things. And the opera glasses. Every time something’s broken…my sister & I say it. “These are broken, mine are broken…oh.” Love Julia & Richard in this
She was moderately known for mystic pizza steel magnolias but she wasn't well known until this movie a year later. It put her on the map and made her a household name
Julia Roberts was nominated for an Oscar in Steel Magnolias in a supporting role. She was famous. I will say Pretty Woman made her A-list leading role famous.
Julia Roberts isn't even the lead role in Mystic Pizza. The lead role is played by AnnaBeth Gish, granddaughter to Lillian Gish. Anna Beth Gish just came off a successful movie with Jon Cryer called Hiding Out, and the studio wanted to keep her visible. Julia Roberts role in Mystic Pizza is so well written. A great movie.
She was great in "Erin Brockovich". A true story. Sorry for this late post. I just saw it and clicked because I like your reactions. Please watch her in that movie. You and your subscribers would be happy to see it.
Julia Roberts was 23 when Pretty Woman was released, and she was 22 for Steel Magnolias. She was a HUGE star in the ‘90’s, culminating in a Best Actress Oscar in 2001 for Erin Brockovich (definitely worth the watch). She was also known back then for her revolving door of relationships, which included the likes of Keifer Sutherland, Jason Patric (The Lost Boys), Liam Neeson, Matthew Perry (Friends), Dylan McDermott, and a short-lived marriage to country singer Lyle Lovett, before eventually settling down and marrying Danny Moder. Richard Gere was a well-established actor by 1990, particularly for his roles in American Gigolo (1979) and especially An Officer and a Gentleman (1982). He is also the ex husband of Supermodel Cindy Crawford.
This was such a hit when it came out. It put Julia Roberts on the map. Fun Fact: the scene with the expensive necklace where he shuts the box and she laughs out loud was not scripted. It’s one of my favorite scenes (my very favorite is the opera scene where her eyes fill with tears). SUCH a great film and so many great moments and so many great lines! Fun reaction - so glad you loved it!
This movie made Julia Roberts famous. It’s her most iconic role. She definitely got a good start with Mystic Pizza and Steel Magnolias. But, Pretty Woman put her on the map and made her America’s sweetheart. She’s a wonderfully talented actress. And, Richard Gere was pretty well established at this point in time.
Julia Roberts was catapulted to super-stardom with this movie. Richard Gere was already established (and about 18 years older than her) Hector Elizondo, the hotel manager, earned a LOT of attention (even though he'd been working for years prior to this role) and earned a Golden Globe nomination. This role really boosted his career and recognition and he'd play similar supporting roles several more times (such as in the Princess Diaries films) This is a sweet fairy tale of a movie... the h00ker (or the street smart tough gal, or the bad-girl) with a heart of gold became a bit of a Hollywood cliche... but it's a cliche that the public seems to love
Greetings from Iowa! Millionaire farmers is right. One of my cousins is exactly that, and I rarely see him in anything but jeans and flannel. My great uncle made good money as a long haul trucker, now he's retired and owns quite a few properties in New Hartford. Jeans, plaid shirts, and cowboy boots are his jam.
"They didn't tell me who it made famous!" 😅 🤣🤣🤣 Good luck with this series, James. It's Julia Roberts here 😉 Her big smile was all over the 90s after Pretty Woman. Previously, she was part of ensemble casts in Steel Magnolias 89 and Mystic Pizza 88, but Pretty Woman really put her on everyone's radar. Her other movie from 1990 was Flatliners, which you should also watch. Great cast (JR, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin 🥓) in Flatliners and it's more creepy than scary so it shouldn't be too much for you.
In the bubble bath scene where Edward hires Vivian for the entire week, as Edward enters the bathroom and Vivian is jamming to her walkman with her eyes closed Julia Roberts had NO IDEA that Garry Marshall had called "action" and that the cameras were already rolling.
my dad had that rodeo drive experience with a salesperson at a BMW dealership, he was buying my mom the car she’d always wanted and went in there looking like he didn’t have two nickels to rub together but he was actually all set to plunk down the cash for mom’s car - the salesperson wasn’t very nice and made them wait while other people were coming in and getting assistance - dad complained to the guy’s boss and I can only imagine what he was thinking when he realized the commission he’d just lost - dad said he was getting gift baskets from him every Christmas for years 🤷🏽♀️
This movie is so implausible but so weirdly charming and enjoyable!! It always makes me smile and laugh and feel good, though I've seen it probably two dozen times!! Who could resist Julia Roberts or Richard Gere? The characters both actually have an impact on each other, and it's delightful!!
That whole "slippery little suckers" scene and line with the escargot flying across the room and being snatched barehanded out of the air by a waiter wasn't scripted. On the other hand, the jewelry box lid snapping shut on the ruby and diamond necklace was ad-libbed by Garry Marshall and Richard Gere without any head's up to Julia Roberts.
"He didn't have to take time out to do that..." Barney (Hector Elizondo) is a concierge, and ensuring the happiness of the guests in his hotel (particularly the high profile ones) is his main responsibility. The better his guests are cared for, the bigger his tips. For a movie focused on a concierge - For Love of Money 1993, with Michael J Fox
Watching you always puts a smile on my face! Your genuine joy is so infectious and your attitude/advice/comforting words make me feel all warm and fuzzy. ☺️ keep doing what you’re doing because YOU ARE AWESOME🩷🩷🩷🩷
You said you recognized "the toner guy" from Friends. I had to giggle a little when you said that because that actor, Jason Alexander, is hugely famous for being on another massive sitcom, "Seinfeld," which ran for 9 seasons (1989-1999). He was 1 of the 4 stars. He played a character named George Costanza.
The Blue Banana is their hangout bar shown at the beginning. Table settings are taught in finishing school. How many people go to one? Julia was in _Mystic Pizza & Steel Magnolias,_ but *this* made her a household name. Please watch Richard Gere in _An Officer and a Gentleman!_
The movie gets its title from the Roy Orbison mega hit song but it didn't get that name until post production when the decision was made to pay the HUGE licensing fee for the use of the song for the shopping spree scene. Also as originally written the script for this movie was EXTREMELY disturbing and dark.
Thank u for ur reaction! Always have fun watching them! Richard Gere became very popular with the hit movie "American Gigolo"(1980) which also started a great fashion trend for men and an awesome soundtrack. I had already seen him in movies before, but this was probably the first time as a Lead. Also, his movie "Officer and a Gentleman"(1982) is still one of my all-time favorites. He's been an A-lister for over 4 decades and a very long list of great movies. What I love most about him is his smile because it reminds me of my father's smile...
When you mentioned the car sales situation, I knew you would enjoy this story. My father was a car salesman his whole life. At one point he was working in upstate NY, it was near the end of the day. He gets an "up" around 5pm. Back then everything closed by 6pm. The customer looked like he had been working in the garden, not dirty, but not well kept. After checking around the entire lot, he settled on a particular car, a mid-sized Chevy, and wanted to take it on a test drive. Test drives take time and it is getting later and later. My father gets the keys and lets the sales manager know that they were going out. He wasn't pleased either. It had been a long slow day. After driving around town for about 30 minutes, the customer asks if he can take the car by his house in order to get his wife's opinion of it. Reluctantly, my father agrees. They get further and further outside town. The car eventually pulls up to the gates of the house... the gates of the Rockefeller estates! The customer shows the car to his wife. She approves. He buys three and paid cash. NEVER pre-judge or underestimate a customer.
You are watching the BEST movies!! Im having so much fun watching these great movies with you. I would like to know, with you having farmed so many years, why you quit, and what you are doing now (other than social media).
You have to watch primal fear with Richard Gere (Edward in pretty woman) starring Edward Norton in his debut role which he won a golden globe award it's a crime drama with a great twist.

I really like Deborah Winger in urban cowboy. Richard Gere made a movie called American gigolo ironic right 👍🍿🍿♥️
Something I meant to point out a while ago appears around 19:26, when you inject the plug for your channel. The logo being black and white, but with dark shadow effects around it makes the A and the U that are black fade into the background, while the WESOME SMOVIES part that's white pops very vividly. EVERY time I see it, I say We-some Smo-vees, and it never makes sense. I know what the full thing says, but if those two letters remain black, then they need something bright behind them to create contrast. Otherwise, all white can work, or a bright color for the first or other letters, or all dark letters with a bright glow behind. I enjoy your viewing of wesome smovies, but that's something that can come across better with a minor tweak.
That’s Giovanni Ribisi that you’re talking about from FRIENDS. Did you know… his sister is in Dazed and Confused? She’s the female friend of the guys, she with the big head of beautiful red hair.
Great movie. All time favorite. And Hector Elizondo is just always great. The moral of the story might be questionable, but it's just great entertainment with great actors all around and a Killer 80s/90s soundtrack.

I'd say there is a fair chance that Edward has seen the opera before: It's La Traviata by Verdi and is one of the most frequently performed operas in existance.
Richard Gere's character in Pretty Woman is a "corporate raider". The best movie about a character like that is 1987's Wall Street (IMHO a FAR FAR superior movie to Leo Dicaprio's 2013 Wolf of Wall Street) starring Michael Douglas and a very young Charlie Sheen with a cameo by Martin Sheen as Charlie Sheen's character's Dad
Great movie.. This movie made Julia Roberts famous. Hey James. How do you feel about musicals? Richard Gere plays in the movie Chicago, which is a musical that takes place in 1920s Chicago it also has Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Queen latifah and John C. Riley in it too. Richard Gere is such an amazing actor. He can play just about any role. If musicals are your thing I would highly recommend checking that out. Loving your reactions and subbed for a while now 🙂 Chicago (2002)
Now that you have seen Pretty Woman, you should watch Runaway Bride. It starred Julia Robert’s and Richard Gere almost 10 years later, still the BEST chemistry!
I watch Music Video "It Must Have Been Love - Roxette" usually at least once a Month, one of my old Girlfriends looked a lot like the Lady in this Movie, the Music Video sometimes makes me cry, BEAUTIFUL SONG!
I had appts all this afternoon so I wasn’t able to watch this live but I’m heading out for my evening walk now so James, Julia & Richard can keep me company.
My husband and I love your videos. We are from Knoxville TN. I wanted to share that the scene where he shuts the necklace case on her hand wasn’t scripted so that was a genuine Julia Roberts reaction!!! 🫶🏻
If you want to see "the old guy from Trading Spaces" - Ralph Bellamy - when he was YOUNG, please watch His Girl Friday! It stars Cary Grant and it was revolutionary for the time. And you MIGHT enjoy The Princess Diaries (in addition to Julie Andrews, the guy who helped Vivian is one of the stars). Also, Richard Gere was great in the movie musical Chicago - it got him back to his Broadway roots of singing/dancing.
Julia Roberts also was famous for Mystic Pizza...also a great movie..and Runaway Bride also with hee and Richard Gere...which a movie that made him famous is An Officer and a Gentlemen..I recommend you check these out.
I love Giovanni Ribisi, the guy who played Phoebes brother on friends. He’s a great character actor. I’ve seen him in several movies. He usually plays interesting/strange side characters. He also speaks Italian, I’m not sure how fluently but I saw a movie with him once and he was speaking Italian through out it.
29:06 This hits hard. 30:57 and that is so cute! Instead of watching the show he’s watching her as she enjoys the play. To me that is so sweet because it’s a theater show he seems to love and watches her enjoy it.
Kit is played here by Laura SanGiacomo. She had her big break in a popular 1989 indie film before this, called “Sex, Lies, and Videotape”. Then she was on a sitcom with David Spade and others called “Just Shoot Me”.
A couple of little bits of trivia.... Bridgit (the nice store clerk who initially helps Vivan out) is played by Elenore Donahue (best known as Ellie the pharmastic in season 1 of The Andy Griffth Show), the opera Edward takes Vivian to is actually about a courtasean (basically a hooker in the 1800's) who falls in love, and (for you muscle car fans out there).... Porsche or Ferrari were the original choices to be Phillip's car Edward (and Vivian) drive in the beginning, but they declined placement due to the content of the film, so Lotus stepped in and supplied the 89 Esprite.. And this was NOT meant to be a "rom-com," it was supposed to be much darker, and many an A listers turned down auditioning for Vivan for that reason.
This is very much a Garry Marshall film. All of the cast were established, except for Roberts. This was her breakout role. Jason Alexander (lawyer guy) made his mark in Seinfeld. Richard Gere has been a top level leading man for decades. They actually made another film many ears later called 'Runaway Bride'. Not as good as this, but equally sweet. Rom-Com variety.
Thanks for the reaction video. Is it that long ago since I've watched in cinema? More than 30 years? Oh boy. The car was a Lotus Esprit, real 80s style. Ahead of its time. Came out in 1976. Discontinued in 2004. A cool car - even though a bit unreliable this one, especially at the beginning of production.
She has a nice smile. Hugh Grant heard an echo when he kissed her. JRo was America's Sweetheart. Meg Ryan was too, once. Oh and, she can run faster than Tom Cruise.
Great reaction! I love your reactions! Please react to Erin Brockovich, starring Julia Robert's, based on a true story! Lawyer, David vs. Goliath type of movie, she's awesome in it!
The actor who plays the hotel manager is Hector Elizondo. You should watch the movie Tortilla Soup starring him and a great TV show it was in for years, Last Man Standing, starring him and Tim Allen
@ 8:40 and turbocharged too. Good for 265HP -- not much by today's standards but a lot from a 2.2L turbo back then. And only pushing 2600lbs worth of car -- absolutely smoked the equivalent Ferrari of the day.
Thats been me all my life. I sleep about 4 hours a night and function very well and still work about 15 to 18 hours a day. As I've gotten in my 60's I do have to take 1 day a month and sleep for about 10 to 12 hours just to recharge.

Loving your reactions and subbed for a while now 🙂
Chicago (2002)
Now that you have seen Pretty Woman, you should watch Runaway Bride. It starred Julia Robert’s and Richard Gere almost 10 years later, still the BEST chemistry!
Pretty Woman & Steel Magnolias made Julia Robert's famous. They both came out around the same time.
What about your hats?!😂😂😂you’re the best !! ❤🎉
1989 Lotus Esprit, 4-cylinder turbo, 280 hp, for the time that was pretty powerful for its size and weight.
$3,000 in 1990 is equivalent in to about $7,196.97 today. That's how much she was was getting for being his beck and call, call girl.
My husband and I love your videos. We are from Knoxville TN. I wanted to share that the scene where he shuts the necklace case on her hand wasn’t scripted so that was a genuine Julia Roberts reaction!!! 🫶🏻
Wow! I'm sure you have fun with this one. ❤
Officer and a gentleman made Richard a star!
Julia Roberts is so charming in this movie it's unbelievable.

This hits hard.
30:57 and that is so cute! Instead of watching the show he’s watching her as she enjoys the play. To me that is so sweet because it’s a theater show he seems to love and watches her enjoy it.
Gary Marshal directed this movie and the elevator operator is Gary’s nephew!!
When Richard Gere was playing piano, it made me wonder if James would like The Cotton Club. 🤔
In addition to putting Julia Roberts on themap, Laura San Giacomo became much better known for her line, "yiu want a name? Cinder-fuckin'-rella!"
I didn’t know Jason Alexander was on Friends. I know him as George from Seinfeld.
The saleslady who helps Vivian is the actress who played the older daughter in Father Knows Best
No, James, YOU are awesome! It was wonderful to see you have such a great time falling in love with Julia Roberts.
Very excited for this reaction. Have a great weekend. You're awesome.
I needed this laugh SO badly today! Thank you for just being you!
Kit is played here by Laura SanGiacomo. She had her big break in a popular 1989 indie film before this, called “Sex, Lies, and Videotape”. Then she was on a sitcom with David Spade and others called “Just Shoot Me”.
She was also in "Quigley Down Under", a nice little film with Tom Selleck and Alan Rickman.
"Everybody has a lot of potential" -James
For some reason that really got me... Great Channel bud!
Richard Gere (An Officer and a Gentleman). The hotel manager dude (Princess Diaries).
The car is a Lotus Espirit
16:30 - I miss 90s clothes fashion! Fun and elegant at the same time.
Steel Magnolias 1989 is Julia Roberts first movie she was nominated for an Oscar for supporting role.
The actor who plays the hotel manager is Hector Elizondo. You should watch the movie Tortilla Soup starring him and a great TV show it was in for years, Last Man Standing, starring him and Tim Allen
The opera they go to see is La Traviata, which is about a courtesan who wants to leave ger old life behind and find true love.
Julia was also good with Denzel Washington in The Pelican Brief.
