Hey everyone! We finally checked out a very highly requested movie. Enjoy our reaction to Starship Troopers, directed by Paul Verhoeven, and starring Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, and Michael Ironside! This was both of our first time watching this film, and we're glad to have finally seen it!

There's an interview with Paul Verhoeven where he's talking about how people didn't get that the movie was a satire on fascism and militarism and he was like "I thought we made it pretty clear when we put Doogie Howser in an SS uniform, but I guess not"
When has Paul Verhoeven ever been subtle? 😂
He also showed them having democracy, a free press, capitalism, a volunteer army, leaders being held accountable, as well as racial and gender equality. But sure, trench coats means fascism.

@@gregorygunn7508 A volunteer army filled with brainwashed highschool graduates who joined because their media, their leaders and even their TEACHERS have been filling their heads with patriotic propaganda isn't a volunteer army; it's the military industrial complex figuring out how to get fresh meat for the grinder without upsetting the general populace with something like the draft.
If the fascism in this movie doesn't look too bad that tells you something about how close we're getting to fascism in the US and UK today.

Love this movie, the CGI on the bugs still holds up pretty well.
Something about the computers back then that could render really solid looking structures, that you don't see so much in movies today. That's why stuff like Jurassic Park still looks fantastic. And they took a lot of care with lighting dynamics, too.

@@ARStudios2000 Absolutely, but I'm specifically talking about the application of digital effects and how those computers rendered more solid looking objects. Just watch a masterpiece like Terminator 2, and see how much weight the T-1000 has between transformations. Sure, you notice the polygons a little more and sometimes the texture maps look a bit pixelated in places, but overall the work then felt more tangible (when done with care, obviously). 💖

In the book, the military recruiters were purposefully using scare tactics to get as many people to choose to quit as possible. They used multiple amputees, many videos that told horror stories, and constantly telling them it was better to quit now than die in a war they didn't care about. Because the setting has a military government, they want to make sure that only those that understand and care for their lives and the lives of others join, and make sure they're well aware of what they will face.
I... actually like that ideal in the military... Shit gets serious fast when it's your mission to kill the enemy BEFORE they kill you and in that aspect of reality? Brutal. Least this version TELLS you what will happen to you if the enemy gets the jump ON YOU and what you have to look forwards to IF you happen to survive. It's always a good point for our military to give the real 'realities' you face when joining. If not? Our military is blowing sunshine up your ass as one of MY drill sergeants told me. Save? HIS point was women and actually getting laid in the military. Lets face it, in the military STILL, men out number the women ten to one and getting laid versus getting gay? Going gay is MORE likely... LMAO. Same note? Most straight men will stay exactly that... so... not to many men are going to get laid but? Women WILL noticed disciplined men that do come back. We're bad boys with experience and disciplined enough to generally have better control over OUR finances.

In the movie though the human race was losing (something most people miss) and accepting 12 year olds.

Fun fact, the combat uniforms were later reused in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy.

Another fun-ish fact. They were going to use the uniforms in the sequel, but the studio forced the director to use an inferior digital camera which made the uniforms strobe, so they had to make new uniforms in only a couple of weeks.
@@ThreadBomb That second film was terrible. 3 wasn't much better but at least Casper Van Dien came back. The anime films are pretty good for the most part.
@@alucard624 I will agree with you on that. They redeemed the series a bit with STI and STTM, the 90s CGI cartoon ain't bad either. And the 80s laser disk anime is fucking amazing
The cast was nervous doing the shower scene, so Verhoeven jumped into the scene COMPLETELY NAKED and this broke the ice, getting the scene done. That's dedication!

I don't think that's quite true. What I read was that they refused to do it unless Verhoeven and the crew had to be naked as well and, fair play to him, he and the crew did so. But it was the actors challenging him rather than him volunteering to put them at ease.
Shower scene where men and women showered together, represents the dehumanising aspect of a fascist military existence. You are a soldier first human being second
It's fun watching someone experience this movie for the first time. After you've watched it a hundred plus times, it's easy to forget how much fun it was the first time.

I went to the theater first. Then got it on Pay-Per-View a couple of years later. Watched it 10+ times. Love this movie. It’s based on a novel written by Robert A. Heinlein. It’s nothing like the book, though.
As a war time parody it’s great, as sci-fi horror it’s great, but as a romance or drama it was above most in the saddest ways. This movie truly is Legendary.
This is actually a very sad and deep story purposely hidden behind the mask of a silly action/high school romance movie
Yeah, the dangers of a fascist society creating a war just for the sake of having a war is certainly relevant in this day and age
Yeah, not only are all the significant events happening to Rico very sad but the overall story of Rico and Carmen extremely tragic. They grow up optimistic wanting to explore the world and they both loose the love of their lives (presumably) and just end up fighting a war that will either see them dead or with a lot of dead friends.
@@sircdrom Well, the framing of the movie is of a future ruled by an autocratic military state with tiered citizenship. That's pretty brutal.
Paul puts an amazing amount of references to World War 2( Movie Title " example SS Troopers") it also is a history of Nazi Germany in WW2. Essentially the movie is about propaganda and how it distorts facts

For the ones that also watched Stranger Things last season. Chrissy, the cheerleader killed by Vecna, her name is Grace Van Dien and is the daughter of Casper Van Dien (Johnny Rico)
Finding out about that made me feel old.
I actually got to ask a couple of questions to the actor who played Xander and he said his favorite scene was the Outpost scene (which they shot as a Remake of Zulu) and the creepiest scene was when they had the fully animatronic version of his head (with the brain bug sucker thing in it) and they Operators kept making it look at him and open and close it's mouth.
@26:30 "Why do they look like SS officers?" Fully intended by Verhoeven as the whole movie was shot in a way to portrait how litterally attractive and alluring fascism can look, how tempting and it can seem as a society model. The cast was selected with their youth and attractiveness in mind. Verhoeven experienced the german occupied Netherlands having been born 1938 and it was a commentary on how fascism can sneak back into a society. Nevertheless was the movie often criticised for glamorizing and glorifying fascism.
It really is amazing that anyone managed to watch this movie without noticing the blindingly obvious satire...
I see the satire, however, despite liking this movie a lot, I criticise it for misunderstanding fascism. The resignation of Sky Marshall Dienes for the failure of the Klendathu invasion would never happen in a true fascist society. Verhoeven should know that fascist leaders never accept responsibility for military failures because they identify themselves with the state, and build their cult of personality for the armed foeces to worship. I may be blind, but I never saw any such thing in this movie.
@@paulmerviel1617 Boris Johnson campaigned for Brexit, then resigned when they won, only to end up as prime minister a year or so later once the dust had settled and the voters had forgotten to be angry at him.
Who is to say Sky Marshall Dienes won't show up again in some capacity? The fascist government in this movie are actually successful, unlike most we've seen irl, with the possible exception of China.

@@paulmerviel1617 I mean, that's a hilariously naive question, because if you don't think the Tories are creeping towards fascism(albeit not as quickly as the Republican party), then you haven't been paying attention. However, in this particular case, I just picked the first politician that came to mind who resigned and stayed out of the public eye long enough for public outrage to cool down before making a comeback, ending up leading the entire country. Sky Marshall Dienes could do the same thing.
If you'd read both paragraphs of my comment I'm sure you could have put two and two together and figured that out, so please try that next time instead of reading the first line and giving up.

One of the many brilliant things I love about this film was the film score by Basil Poledouris (who died in 2006 from lung cancer), whose credits include the film scores for Conan the Barbarian, Robocop, Hunt for Red October amongst many others.
The track titled "The Klendathu Drop" is simply brilliant!

During the prom scene when they're all dancing to the woman singing "I Have Not Been To Paradise", that's Basil's daughter, Zoe. That song is great, too!

I do remember watching it in theater and everyone was screaming when they were killing bugs. Honestly, i never saw that again in a theater. It was just so amasing that i had to put Starship Troopers in my best theater experience of my life.
I remember a similar thing happen. When I watched Independence Day in the theatre and Will Smith's character punches the alien in the face with the legday "welcome to earth" line the hole theatre erupted in cheering and applause. That was my best Cinema experience ever. 😄

Verhoeven wanted to make a satirical movie about teenage Nazis graduating high school in 1939 but since no studio in Hollywood would touch that with a bargepole, we got this instead.
Which is based on a Novel by Robert A. Heinlein and turned into an overly satirical piece of trash that only chose bits and pieces from an amazing novel

You called it when you spoke of how the ship shot reminded you of old school miniatures. That’s how the ship exteriors were done. They did some seriously beautiful work there.

Fun fact in the novel the moment 3:36 the recruiter Rico meets doesn't have the prosthetics instead he in a wheel chair with three of four limbs missing. Rico later meets the same recruiter again now with prothestics and learns that the mobile infantry uses his missing limbs as a scare tatic to test how serious new recruits are when joining the mobile infantry.
So glad you guys watched this! Starship Troopers is a masterpiece and I will fight anyone who disagrees

@@TatsuChi The sequel Starship Troopers 2 was made for almost no money and gets generally shat on, but I think it's good for what it is. It's not really an action movie, more an updated version of The Thing. It was directed by Phil Tippett, who did the creature effects for the first movie. And yes, Baron Munchausen is a great film.

I saw this movie in the movie theaters back in the day, and it was such a great experience because once Michael Ironside said make it that 20 minutes the whole audience erupted cheering not only on that scene but a lot of other scenes the crowd was just going wild in the theater it was a great time.

The "Val Kilmer" is Jake Busey, Gary Busey´s son, just one among a lot of great names in this movie like Ironside, Richards, Brown and Harris.
The not so subtle militarism going on in that universe is a great touch on the usual Space Marine trope right down to idea of "You are not a citizen unless you have served in the army" and Neil Patrick Harris slowly wearing more and more fascistic looking uniforms as the movie progresses
And besides the Verhoeven-isms, it´s a damn fun Space Opera to watch
Well said! It uses the sci-fi backdrop really well, and it makes the movie more "accessible" to people who aren't normally into political satires
Yes Gary and Jake Busey. Gary was in Predator 2 1990 while Jake appeared in The Predator from 2018.
i was gonna point out Jake Busey as well...he totally pulls off the "crazy look" he gets from his dad....Check him out in "Contact" as well

Jake was also in the TV series of From Dusk Till Dawn (the movie would be great for a reaction, BTW - script by Tarantino).

@jn4756in the military the command, in the US Marines anyway is “officer on deck”, saying “officer on THE deck” is poking fun at him falling…. On the deck (deck can also refer to the floor in naval terms).
It’s pretty subtle and clever military humor most civilians will miss.
Michael Ironside is my favourite actor. He elevates anything that he's in - absolute legend.
Best SFX in this movie? Casper Van Dien and Denise Richards because no real humans could be this gorgeous.

Clancy Brown is epic in Highlander. And Jake Busey in The Frighteners (directed by Peter Jackson). Both movies remind me of Starship Troopers in that you start out going wtf but they build a whole world that sucks you in. Fun video Nice Dudes!
Oh my god, Clancy Brown utterly dominates Highlander and walks all over that screen. He's also _fucking huge_ in that film.

I'm a (mature) student studying film in London and this video filled me so much joy. I wish could rewatch every film I've ever seen but with these two. In such a cynical world, it's people like this that we should all have in our lives. Can't wait to watch their entire back catalogue.
The CGI in this movie is on par, sometimes even better than marvel recent movies

I would say it's better than any MCU movie. Do you see any MCU sfx holding up 20 years from now like Starship Troopers? Me neither.

Great reaction to a great film. A lot of people misinterpret this film as being just straight pro-fascist instead of a satire on fascism. Satire tends to fly over a lot of heads. Classic Verhoeven!

@@NiceDudeMovieNight Oh, don't underestimate this. I worked in a small German village cinema when the movie came out. It was not a huge blockbuster flick for us but we had it nearly a year in the late shows on weekends and it did pretty well being some underdog nerdy sleeper hit. But boy, from the reactions of the people after the movie and the word of mouth it generated over the time (no internet in that time, folks!), especially the 16-21 age range got it completely wrong, attracting more and more people who actually did not get that satire part at all. It was strange to fire up the projectors, grab some popcorn and sit with ~50 people on a Saturday night where half of the audience was hooting the wohle time for its obvious laugh at racism and the other half for - well - the exact opposite.
I confess that I didn't get the movie the first time I saw it, seeing it as an anti-Arab movie based on the first Gulf War. I dunno, maybe I missed the opening parody news segments? Anyway, I got it on second viewing and now think it's one of the great science fiction movies.

@@NiceDudeMovieNight Speaking of satire - you might wanna try tracking down "Sexmission" - unfortunately, I don't think a dubbed version exists, so you'd have to watch with subtitles, but oh well.
It's a 1984 Polish comedy about two guys that volounteer for a cryosleep experiment for 3 years, but instead wake up 53 years later, after a global war in a world where men are extinct, and it's all females. The film is a satire of sociallist regimes disguised as a sci-fi comedy to get it past censorship (which back in 1984 Poland was purely political - the same censorship had no problem with scenes of gratuituous nudity in the film).
It's been really cool to see the appreciation this film has gotten over the past several years.
I love Starship Troopers, both this movie and the book. There are such great differences between the two that they do not spoil each other, unlike what commonly happens with movies based on a book. If you like the movie then I suggest reading the book. You will not be disappointed.
The film was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to TITANIC.
The film made $122 million dollars against a $100 million dollar budget.
It got mixed reviews by Critics but has gained a cult following overtime. There are some talks of a reboot to the movie that would follow more closely to the original novel.

Would love to see them do the powered armor from the book with a proper budget. That Mechwarrior thing with really bad CGI in the third flick was really bad.

We don't need that. The 97 Film is far better then the original novel. The original novel is pro-militarist, promoting ideas that lean towards fascism in all honesty. The 97 film, if anything, is a parody of the original novel. Verhoeven is very anti-war: he lived through Nazi occupation in The Netherlands for crying out loud, and saw the full affects of Nazi propaganda. This film is not just a message against Nazism and Fascism, but the American Military Complex.
It's honestly a prophetic film: came out 4 years before 9/11. Film Critics panned this film for being too "unrealistic". Considering the direction America is going now ... it was far ahead of its time.
We aren't meant to cheer on our heroes: they've become completely brainwashed by society and the military into a war that doesn't matter (Klendathu is on the other side of the galaxy, there is no evidence to suggest that the bugs sent the meteor against Buenos Aires, the evidence leads us to believe we occupied bug territory in the first place, etc). It's an incredibly deep film masked by an over-the-top action film that went FAR over the head of audiences in 97.

The Military is trying to be the Starship Troopers Federal Service (and failing miserably) through inclusion and diversity...
We are no longer a free market society (which is the opposite reality for Starship Troopers. Rico's dad was never prior service and yet the family inherited wealth from many generations of plantation farming in the Philippines as a Filipino, not white, family).
Hollywood does exactly the kind of embellishment that Starship Troopers does for literally ANYTHING. Not just the military. Its another arm of the propaganda machine and everyone can see it.
We have a government under Liberal Democrats trying to push for war in the Ukraine and over Taiwan, precisely because the Division in the US is so immense and they might end up losing complete control of the fabricated division. (The other irony is that all the major wars of the 20th Century, under US Leadership, were all Democrats.)
The mockery actually falls flat when you consider that literally everything its trying to make satire of is so blatantly obvious, despised, and even countered by classical conservative views, or even basic libertarian views...
Quite literally only a handful of American politicians (not one of them Democrats) have voted no and further considerable debate on such issues as that of the Inflation Relief Act and the sending of billions of dollars to Ukraine to support their war that we have no reason to be involved in... And we have a current sitting president and multitude of politicians essentially pushing rhetoric to create faux Causus Belli about Russia and the potential of a Taiwan confrontation with China.
I have zero confidence that any modern Hollywood movie studio would be able to faithfully adapt the book in the current political climate. It would either be altered drastically to replace the militaristic philosophy of the novel, or it would be made even more of a "humans bad" satire than the Verhoeven film for fear of being crucified on social media for "glorifying fascism". Even though that's unfair to the book. Incidentally, Verhoeven has famously admitted that he never even read more than two chapters of the book before filming the movie based on it. Instead he just had someone summarize it for him, and then set about making a movie to deliberately undermine what he perceived to be the themes of the book.
@@names_are_useless You don't know what you're talking about. The novel is anti-fascist. The fact that you misunderstood it so severely is exactly why a new movie needs to be made. Consider how one of the moral lectures Heinlein delivers is on how ignorant voters will vote for the impossible and then be forced to deal with the consequences when they try to make the impossible come true. We're living through that every day right now.

I was so into this movie as a teenager, watched it repeatedly and got a book on the making, which I remember bringing into school once.

The Mask Of Zorro (1998) it's directed by Martin Campbell who directed two of the best James Bond movies Goldeneye and Casino Royale. It stars Antonio Banderas, Sir Anthony Hopkins, & Catherine Zeta-Jones. It's based on the pulp magazine character created by Johnston McCully in 1919. He was one of the main inspirations for Batman along with the pulp magazine character The Shadow and Sherlock Holmes.
Best to save prayer for selfless acts, and things that actually matter.

This movie actually ages quite well. Saw it at it's premiere in Los Angeles. It's also worth reading the book, which is different. And any introduction to Robert A. Heinlein is a good thing, but if you only read one of his books, read "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress." Then read the rest.

@@NiceDudeMovieNight It was entertaining (that was way back in the day), but I suppose I was a bit confused because I had read the novel first.. and the movie deviated a lot from it. But that is fine. It is only in retrospect that I really appreciate it. I don't think I appreciated it fully at the time. The director (who also did Robocop and Total Recall) is a true original. Over the top but somehow agreeable. Again, thanks for a most excellent review.

We're also huge fans of Robocop, so we understood his style going into this movie. If someone isn't expecting it, this movie can come off as very strange in its presentation and sense of humor!

Something that gets overlooked with this film is the character quality of Ace, who had been set up to be a minor competitive antagonist until, Upon seeing Rico "Shot Down" and "Injured" being dumped by Carmen, Ace is almost immediately there as a supportive teammate. It's a small detail but it goes a long way to making you really like the zany violin playing flat-top. He also pours booze on fresh laser-work. Befriend with caution!
One of my favourite movies of all time. I wish more sci-fi war movies like this were made - no weird gimmicks like time travel, just humans with guns and aliens with claws.

I saw this in the theater when it came out. It IMMEDIATELY joined the ranks of my all time favorite sci-fi!!! Such a killer cast and a fantastic movie!

I would Strongly suggest you guys to have a look at Pandorum from 2009. Very good Sci-fi movie and hugely underrated!
I always felt that an excellent follow-up to this film is "Ender's Game" (2013). It has a lot of shared themes, and is quite thoughtful -- even if it doesn't measure up to the novel.
To touch on the comment about neil patricks harris' character looking like an SS officer, Paul Verhoeven chose to adapt it from the book as an overt satire of fascism. Verhoeven even stated in an interview that the beginning scene of the film is a shot for shot recreation from a nazi propaganda film "truimph of the will".
Wow, that's crazy! Rewatching it while we were editing, we picked up waaay more on the fascist imagery throughout the costume design and sets

As for the special effects, this movie were insanely expensive when it was released at the time, hence why the effects still hold up even to this day.

Starship Troopers is one of my favorite sci-fi movies. Hell, it's one of my favorite movies.
This is truly one of my favourite movies.. it's always got something going on.. the lines are still great to this day and the effects aren't even dated decades later.
I enjoyed this rewatch with you both. Partly because you appreciated this amazing movie, and partly because you don't say 'like' every other word!
One of my fav films of all times. One thing I've always loved about Veerhoven, is that his death scenes were always so incredibly purposefully realistic. He liked that!😅😁

I love Paul Verhoeven's style of filmmaking. This was my favorite, though I very much enjoyed Robocop, Total Recall, Hollow Man, Flesh + Blood, Basic Instinct, and even Showgirls. Satire, schlock, gore, sex and special FX that pushes the envelope. I just have to catch up with his newest feature films. I've heard they are a bit underrated, but quite good.
There was a subtlety that I did not catch for years watching this movie. And it is one of my favorites. A criminal was caught, tried, and executed all within the same day. I always knew this movie was a satire but it went even harder than I realized.
Remember, Carmen altered the ships trajectory to make it more "efficient", it put them on the path of the asteroid, which the nav computer probably had anticipated, thus striking the asteroid and altering its course, causing it to veer towards earth, striking Rico's parents and his home. Making them all rush to war.
Did anyone else notice that when the tanker melts the 1 troopers arm it was her right arm but after Rico blows it up its her left arm that's missing? 😂

One of the best placements of a song in history is during the canteen fight between rico and xander. It's Fade into You which was the biggest love ballad at the time.

Saw this in the theater with my ex husband. He was way too intrigued. After he got it on dvd , it seemed to be on a loop in my living room. I can appreciate it for what it is, a great opportunity to watch Jake Busey act, you know the dude who played violin . That’s Gary Busey’s son. Lol…. I can watch it now, it was too violent for me then. I hope y’all had fun.

Great film. Came out when I was 10 and I loved it immediately for the battle scenes and CGI. Had no idea of the underlying political and social satire when I was 10. Once I was older and understood the broarder meaning of the film I still like it for the battle scenes and CGI.

Yes!! Loved this movie as a teenager, the gore/violence satisfied my younger self. But also the action and story was really good too I think. Plus Michael Ironside is in it, I'd watch him in anything.
You will see the trooper uniforms re-used in a lot of shows. Two that come to mind are Power Rangers Lost Galaxy and Firefly. Re-using to save money
Also that forgotten abomination of a live-action Gundam movie: G-Savior.
Best movie ever, the satire is the best. I watched this when it released I was 11 at the time. It's a movie I tell everyone to watch. Just remember that this movie was made before everyone was offended by everything lol.
The actor who plays Watkins (and blows himself up with the nuke at the end) is Seth Gilliam, who would later go on to play Father Gabriel in "The Walking Dead"

How I Killed Your Father Fact: During the live-fire training scene, Djana'D (Tami-Adrian George) shoots and kills Breckinridge (Eric Bruskotter) accidentally, resulting in Rico's flogging. In real life, the two actors are together and have a child. They met on this film.
No CGI Needed Fact: When Rico, Carmen, and Carl meet with the recruiting officer after pledging, and the officer shakes his prosthetic hand with Rico, the recruiting officer has no legs. Robert David Hall, who plays the recruiting officer, had both legs amputated after a car crash in 1978. Three years later, Hall appeared in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000) as the medical examiner Dr. Al Robbins, wearing prosthetic legs using a crutch, and walking with a limp.

I don't know how the hell Verhoven did it, but he somehow combined an awesome adventure movie with a biting satire so that by the end you're essentially unironically rooting for the bad guys & you know it. it's a freaking mind boggling feat of filmmaking.
Dude lived through Nazi occupation in The Netherlands during WW2. He witnessed how effective fascist propaganda is.
I don't root for the Nazis.
But this is the entire point of the movie and why Verhoven made it. Just look how many people only see the dumb action movie with space bugs in it. These twoe here somehow also didn't recognize that you shouldn't belive the goddamn propaganda reels and that the humans are actually the evil maniacs in this.

Look at the movie again. There is one scene where the bug is imobilized and fearfull. It is the only time we can see emotions in the arachnoids and it has this puppy like fearfilled eye… and what is the only thing these soldiers can think about? blast it with full magazines until the green goo spirts unto your face
Love your reactions. Starship Troopers is one of my favorite movies of all time. A great action movie, and a great satire of a militaristic society. It's based on a book by Robert Heinlein, but it's quite different from the source material. For example - in the book the soldiers use big power armors to fight the bugs - something similar to a mech suit. The novel was controversial, because many people accused the author of promoting militarism and fascism. Come to think of it - the movie satirizes the book
The power armors only appear in a latter Starship Troopers movie and its sequels. Better late than never. I guess they didn't have the budget for that at the time; but they wrote it in a way that makes sense with the first one.
One of the biggest changes in the adaptation that reflects this is the attack on Buenos Aires. In the book it's a ground landing by a bug assault force, in the movie it's an asteroid catapulted from the bug homeworld. This is because in the book the author wanted to paint the outside world as fiendish and the authoritarian as the big defender, pretty straightforward. In the movie.. It doesn't add up. Think about it. It was launched from the other side of the galaxy, so even if it were traveling at lightspeed it must've been launched tens of thousands of years ago. And it still struck Earth with precision, coincidentally wiping out the one liberal stronghold and home of the regime's opposition parties. It's implied this was a false flag attack.
This movie is one of those flicks that just get better and better every time you watch it. It's definitely in my top favs of all time
I would recommend Starship Troopers 3, 4, & 5 since these continue the "Johnny Rico Story" in some form of way.
The way Verhoeven handled the "bug asteroid" is so cool. He doesn't explicitly state it in the movie, but all evidence tells us that it was just a random event that Earth's fascist leadership used as an excuse to expand the conflict (which humanity was the cause of, to start with).
If the "bug asteroid" had been launched from Klendathu, like they claimed, it would have had to travel for about 90,000 years - if it travelled at light speed; Klendathu being almost on the other side of the galaxy.
Or it was a false flag operation to give the fascist leadership an excuse to start a war.
Been a long time since I read the novel, but I believe there was something like hyperspace / wormhole travel involved. Might just be fan-theory, lol.

I remember watching this on Star Movies 20+ years ago. This is one of those movies that you "need" to watch when you encounter it on the cable TV.
I really like how this movie makes a lot of really cool characters and have most of them die off and it makes their deaths more memorable and impactful

Yeah, I don't know if I'd say that. The satire definitely hits, but you still have protagonists to root for one way or the other. It's more a cautionary tale, it's not like they're depicted as pure evil.
