I fractured my lisfranc on August 1st 2023 and My foot was in a cast for about 6 weeks and I was home for about 4 months. When I tried ro go back out to work in December, I developed plantar fasciitis. I was granted 6 more weeks of leave and I started therapy...therapy helps but I find that my foot is taking too long to heal. It is now April 2024 and I still have to elevate my leg, ice and I'm still experiencing cramps in my calf, problems balancing and walking. What do you suggest?

Broken and dislocated tibia and fibula 5 months ago. 57 years old. 3 surgeries. A plate and 10 screws holding things together. Was just released from using boot. Full weight bearing. My issue is gaining ankle flexibility, toes up or forward stride.
The iWalk was a game changer for me. Hands free walking to carry things and no wheeled device can go up or down stairs. There is a weight limit and you need good balance. It's good for keeping your hip active.
    Crutches are the worst.

Hi Dr, thank you so much for the valuable information. I'm doing my best not to have surgery with a displaced 5th metatarsal (dancers) fracture. 3 podiatrist opinion (2- surgery, 1- 50% chance of healing w no surgery). After trying to manage my recovery with only a boot, your video has given me more hope in preventing reinjury and fortifying the bracing of my foot.🙏🏾🙏🏾 Fortunately with your suggestions there is still faith in Dr's. Thank you. God bless.

I broke my tibia, fibula and shattered my left ankle 6 weeks ago. I still can’t begin to try to be weight bearing for 2 more weeks. I have pretty bad nerve pain on the outside of my left foot. I have three plates and 13 screws. I enjoyed hearing about the devices you recommended along with the exercises as I have completely lost all of my flexibility….not only in my lower injured leg and ankle but in my calves, hamstrings, hips and back. Definitely going to try to put your recommendations to use. Wish you were in Georgia!!

I'm recovering from acute fractures of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Metatarsals. I've now been in the boot for 6 weeks. Seeing my dr. this week for evaluation. Hope to get the okay to start transitioning to a regular walking shoe. I have heard many doctors recommend the New Balance 928v3. It has rollbar technology, a very thick non-bendable sole and a forefoot rocker. It's kind of similar to the Brooks Beast/Ariel but has more support, more depth and wider toe box. What's your opinion? Would the 928v3 be a good transition shoe for weaning out of the boot? Thanks, Doc!

I am recovering from an open compound fracture on the ankle. Plates have been fitted, the surgery went well. The swelling, the doctors are left saying, may take another two years, but I want to be back on both my feet. I making slow progress in movements of the ankle, but I am struggling. Do you have anything specific for me? What you mentioned above, I have followed most of those things

Hello, thanks for your videos! I have learned so much from watching! I broke my ankle 7 weeks ago. I have a displaced Fibula Fracture with a Tibia Fracture to go along with it. My injury required surgery but unfortunate circumstances created a time problem and 3 weeks later, I did not have surgery. My Tibia bone has healed nicely and my Dr. seems happy with my Tibia healing progress. I am in an Air Cast boot and have just started weigh bearing at 6 weeks. I am carefully doing stretching exercises with bands and a ball. My toes are painful but getting better. I have completely lost my calf muscle. I am making progress with the boot but it is uncomfortable. My foot is still swelling considerably.
I am concerned with having a displaced fracture not healing properly due to no surgery. I'm concerned of a possibility of rebreaking my ankle.
I would welcome any advice on how to continue to improve my ankle.
    Thanks!

I had a broken left ankle over 12 years ago in early March 2012 in a bad car accident. I had surgery on that ankle the following afternoon. It took me almost 5 months in recovery time in walking normal. I had both of my parents during my recovery time. I even did sprained my right ankle in a bad fall just outside of my apartment on October 19th,2017. I tore a ligament in my right ankle in that fall. I had my cell phone with me during that fall. I called 911 first and then my mother. I thought that I broken that ankle when I tried to get up those 2 times. My ankle and foot was swollen and really bruised all over. I didn’t drive for 2 weeks for that ankle. It was a little bit harder to drive at first. I did used a walker for that ankle for distance in walking. I also used a walker for walking for my broken ankle in walking or used it when I had to go for 2 feet in hopping. Even using a wheelchair for my broken ankle. I do know how to used crutches but, I didn’t used them for my broken ankle. I did drive a car when I had the boot on my left ankle. There is no way to drive a car when the boot on my right ankle.

Thank you for this video… I am in Canada, but thought it helpful.
I fractured my outer ankle at Christmas, and it was displaced …had to have surgery Jan 4th. I have been off work since. Thankfully, I just found out today my short term disability has been approved(relief!). At my first follow up on Jan 20th, I was told it’s coming along as it should. Told to do only this simple stretch, flexing toes/foot back and forth only, till I go again on Feb 17th. In your opinion, what pain is reasonable when doing so? I feel a bit of pain where the incision area is. It’s not major, but feels uncomfortable.
My toes and top of foot are still a bit numb. The toe end of foot…upper and bottom of foot are tender. I’m not pushing the stretch as it’s been just over 3 weeks, but want it to get as better as it can soon. I should add, I’m already a pretty weea person with low muscle…so also want to make sure I don’t overdo something because I don’t have the right amount of muscle/strength to overcome extra issues. Anyways, if you have time for this 54 year old gal in Vancouver BC Canada’s question…super cool. But understand if you don’t. Thanks for the vid anyways.

Best thing ive used so far for my broken ankle is the Iwalk3.0 hands free crutch if u can stand on one leg for 30 seconds you are likely able to use. I use a knee scooter as well but its more of a pain expcept in the house. But the iwalk allows you to be fairly normal go outside walk the dog

I had a broken tibia from a car accident and it’s currently my 3rd month since I got my second surgery had to get a plate with screws but my foot it seems to be the only difficult part of the recovery my foot is really swollen feels like a foam under my skin when I press down it leaves a dent , I can move and rotate my foot around but when I I try pick my foot up towards be upward it doesn’t go as back as my right foot when I curl my toes inward I can’t curl them all the way as my other foot I feel tightness on my foot my toes seem to spred out when I try to curl my toes down a bit with a twitchy sensation. I want to know what are possible ways to reduce the swelling of it feeling like styrofoam and get my momentum back on my foot . I’m supposed to get my boot in 2 weeks .

I broke my Talus bone in the left ankle October 5th. External fixator until October 19. had screws and plate to my ankle. Everything seems (surgical incisions) to be healing fine. Physical therapy twice a week and at home exercises everyday. Doctor told me it can take up to a year for the red ness, darkness to go away as the blood vessels are healing. But it sometimes scares me because my foot turns like dark purple and goes away as soon as I elevate it. My life changed after my accident because I have a Labor job and love to do Labor, I hope everything heals for you and I. If you want anybody To talk to I’m here, because I know sometimes I want somebody to talk to when I’m alone at home all day.

@@hoodbrodi8581Broke and dislocated ankle. Tibia pushed out through skin. Fibula broken of course. Plate, 10 screws, 3 surgeries and 5 months later, full weight bearing and walking fairly well. Due to bone being thrust outside the skin, there was a risk of infection, so I had an external fixator for a few weeks. Pin through talus and pins into tibia. Dealing with that was the worst.

a really good way to fix a sprain or any bruising for that matter is dampen a cloth put it in the freezer till its really cold pour witch hazel over it wrap the cloth around the area then bandage it so the cloth doesnt move.. then wrap it in ceran wrap leave it on for 24 hours. This has worked for me every time. Also have saved fingernails when they have been squashed etc. You can get witch hazel from your supermarket in the makeup/skin care section for a couple of dollars. You can also use it to reduce spider veins.

Well, I'm thoroughly depressed now! 😔
I am disabled with chronic illnesses and unbearable chronic pain.
Our NHS in the uk is wonderful from the point of view of free treatment for everyone, but it is severely lacking for many people, including me.
I've already had 12 years of unbearable butt-foot pain, hip pain, Baker's cyst pain and arthritis pain. Last year I had a heavy fall on my knees and elbow. Had an x-ray, and once they saw that nothing was broken, thst was it. I'm still suffering. 1½ weeks ago, my left foot gave way, and I had excruciating pain in the front ⅓ of my foot. Had no way of getting to A&E (16 miles away), so phoned the Dr. Got to see a nurse who said that I had "probably" broken my Phalanges and torn my ligaments, but they don't do x-rays for that. She told me to exercise my toes by picking up a tissue with them.....right after breaking my bones! I couldn't do it, due to the swelling and pain! She said the heel pain that I've had for 12 years is likely Planter Faschia (nobody has ever told me that, and consequently have never had any treatment or advice).
I have so little faith in our NHS, that I got a sports masseuse to come over and take a look. She said she thought I'd broken my metatarsal bones, as well as torn ligaments, and to NOT to do the toe exercises!
I live in a rural area, have no family and nobody to take me me to any specialist.
I know you have to pay for your treatment in the US, but my god, you get soooo much better treatment than our NHS supplies! Disabled people, like myself, who live on small incomes can't afford private treatment....but then, I suppose it's the same over there.
eg. My elderly neighbour fell down ths stairs several years ago. She kept going to the dr, complaining of neck pain. They did absolutely nothing for two years, until finally they gave her an x-ray, and said that she had broken her neck! My late mum had a similar experience, where she was hours from being paralysed, dus to 2 years of incompetent and unbelieving drs!

I had a foot injury I rolled on my ankle and have been trying to heal it myself I didn’t want to go A&E and be stuck there probably hours than told oh it’s a sprain go home so I’ve been resting it for a month but am still in pain can walk a little now though.,but haven’t ventured outside to shop etc yet. Hello, I am so sorry to hear that and hope, you can recover soon. I am finishing my 6th week with the same injury and can recommend:
*Rent a wheelchair, it makes a huge difference in comfort, safety and independence
*I was prohibited from walking for 5 weeks, 6th week walking with crutches
      * put your foot high on a chair to help reduce the swelling
      * eat a lot of protein and add calcium and vitamin D to help absorb it
      * ask for injections for blood dilution to prevent blood clotting and take them daily until you walk again
      * regulate your food - don't starve, body needs energy but sugar can stop calcium intake and any extra weight will slow down the rehab and put more stress on the foot when you start walking
      * make yourself happy with small things (nice book, learning sth new, talking with friends) every day to keep mentally ok
