    Try casting the grapnel hook in aluminum.I like the straw design maybe add flight stabilizing fins , like a dart or rocket would have.

    • @fionnoflaherty3898
      @fionnoflaherty3898 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      triplebackspace remember it needs to flip over to grapple the fins would stop it from doing that

      Fionn O' Flaherty I don't think the straw design flips . It looks like the straw design tethers the back.

      Will Ham Animates Nope just seemed to be a logical step in the progression , if you want to improve flight distance , improve aerodynamics.

    The wrapper is quite efficient actually. It's what a lot of real pneumatic launchers usually use since it can make very good use of the compressed air escaping the barrel. It just has the side effect that the air has to travel down the length of the barrel first before it can act on the outer projectile. You want to make it as long and low friction as possible to get the best acceleration from your air pressure. I'd use a sealed PVC pipe design that can fall away once the hook has been accelerated sufficiently. But realistically they should both give similar results at low pressures. Once you go into the really high pressures an inner 'gun' type design is much better.

      the straw wrapper style is the best when it comes to delivering the most energy possible to the projectile, you can actually get away with using really thin walls on them too, check out joerg spraves arrow pistol, might even try polycarbonate straw wrapper if you want since it will be as strong as metal and lighter

    I think the straw wrapper is more reliable to get it to stick to wherever you want it to... the other one has to rotate first to be aligned properly, and we could see in the footage that it doesn't just rotate 180° and stops there but keeps rotating, so it's gonna be a 50/50 chance of it actually being correctly aligned when it's time to get a grip at something

    • @xyro16
      @xyro16 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that when the rope pulls back, the hook will align itself properly no matter what so it will still work. On the other hand, I feel like the spinning makes the arrow less aerodynamic, making it fly a shorter distance... Also if the hook is lighter, the wind will have more effect on it which is also a drawback... Just brainstorming here :)

    • @allenpan
      @allenpan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, it seems like there's significant kinetic energy lost in the flipping motion. On the plus side it doesn't get windy much in Los Angeles.

    • @animehair05silently88
      @animehair05silently88 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @jjantson8030
      @jjantson8030 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lukegear the problem with light weight metals like aluminum is that it might not be able to hold his weight if he made it the same size as the steel. He would have to compensate greatly for how weak and malleable the metal is, so in the end it might end up weighing more than just the regular steel

    • @InnovationBlast
      @InnovationBlast 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You mentioned that you used that specific solenoid because it has that specific size of fittings. You could try possibly using one with larger fittings, then mounting them to your back and using heavy duty tubing to carry the air to your arms. that way you can lessen the load on your hands, reduce bulk, and possibly have more space for a larger grappling hook.

    Use titanium for the hook. It's strong as steel about half of the weight. A few small pieces won't cost much and you can get a shop to weld it for you since it's a bit tricky to work with if you're not an experienced welder.
    Increasing air pressure will work too, but I'd also work on the aerodynamics of the hook itself since that can also help with distance.
    If you really wanted to go crazy, you could make a much smaller hook mechanism that expands the hooks out of a cylindrical container when it leaves the barrel using springs on the inside of the container to push the hooks out when it ejects. It would be a bit more compact and aerodynamic. Plus, it would look really cool if it was executed correctly.

    The main limiting factor probably isn't the weight of the grappling hook, but the weight and drag created by the rope. So actually making the grappling hook weight more compared to the rope may result in longer flight. But ideally make the rope thinner.
    To check if this is true - try the hook with and without rope.
    Also another way to make it better without changing the power is to make the acceleration last longer - for example by lengthening the barrel.

    Wrapping teflon tape around the straw wrapper gun barrel or the Furze rod, you could make a tighter seal around the chamber barrel.

    Depending on how tight of a fit the straw wrapper style is you could probably reduce a lot of weight off of it as well. you only need a minor amount of material to hold your weight and the rest could be shaved a way you might be able to cut a pattern into it that still in part strength but lightens it up or leave two or three strong struts that run the full length with a ring at the bottom and then fill in the rest with something it still captures the air....

    I like the straw wrapper design. It looks cooler, and when you fired it, it looked the most like Spidey's web. Ultimately, I'd choose whatever design is easiest to change cartridges mid web sling. If you run out of web fluid, you're gonna have a bad time.

    I've been loving where your current project has been going so far! Though I'm only 14 with very little knowledge in mechanics and PSI and stuff like that, I do know how to make PREDICTIONS AND HYPOTHESIS! (Thank you Mrs.Harsh, My 8th grade Physical science teacher)
    So, seeing the Colin Furze hook, it performed at much the same rate as the Colin Furze Lite, with the Colin Furze Lite giving that nice flip around that the normal Colin Furze hook might struggle with at times. So I'll mark out the Colin Furze hook. Now, when comparing the Colin Furze Lite to the Straw-wrapper hook, I noted that the Straw-wrapper hook did weigh more, and it would DEFINITELY hurt to have that come flying at your face! But nonetheless, the weight will cause it to arc much more strongly than the Colin Furze Lite. So I can mark out the Straw-wrapper hook. That leaves the Colin Furze Lite! I apologize if I took up so much time trying to tell you what my opinion is!

    I like the straw wrapper design but you might try using some rubber sealing rings to maximize pressure on the rod. I prefer this design since it allows for more power behind the shot. We cant have spidy falling short because he missed by 1-2 feet.

    u need one that is like a spike in the barrel then when it leaves it has 3 or 4 hook like parts that when it goes through something it expands to look its self like a one way valve. kind of like grappling gun from cars 2 in the opening scene (i am not a fan of the Disney cars movies I'm just using it as a reference) this plus the extra pressure and you have built the ultimate grappling gun

    I think the Colin Furze design is more likely to wrap around itself after getting over a target. Probably be a good idea to test which one, when launched, is the best at "sticking".

    Although it'll bump up the price significantly and be harder to weld, titanium might be a good option for the hook due to it's similar tensile strength compared to steel and it's lower density.

    I like the "straw wrapper" hook more because unlike the "Colin Furze" hook you don't have to rely on it doing the same perfect 180 degree flip at various distances for it to grab onto it's target.

    Jorge Sprave of the slingshot channel did some work with solenoids and was able to pump the psi to like 900 or something. He was using his for a crazy arrow launcher but I think his methods and materials could be useful.

    I love this guy's videos! I have an idea or two for the straw wrapper hook. I was thinking maybe half steel and half pvc pipe (or something light like such.) Like a weighted arrowhead concept. Move the rope's loophole at the bottom of the steel half to still make use of the strength of the steel. And still using the arrow concept, run feathers down the pvc half. They're weak enough to keep from obstructing the hooks latching on. Also maybe have a spring mechanism wired to go off at the pull of the trigger to assist against the rope's resistance. It would increase the rope's chamber size, so maybe run it along the side instead of the under barrel and at an upwards angle. Idk. You're the walk and I'm just talk lol. I really love your work, though.

    The one that you like or started talking about right the simplest one you could make the hook parts kind of like wings where they got a little lift too then
