Hey cheers mate! It probably got lost in the sea of adulation, but I actually just posted a comment on your recent hot glue webshooter video the other day. It's definitely the best one I've seen in terms of stickiness! Meanwhile I've just been ignoring that aspect and focusing on the swinging haha.
I think it's cool that different makers can look at the same project with such different goals and approaches! Will we see more Spider-Man stuff from you?

I focused on that aspect because it's my knowledge/experience base, and because it's fairly unexplored territory. Clearly you've become quite competent with tether systems like this, and I find them super exciting, especially when a more significant leap forward is made like your incredible speed! A lot of people have been mentioning the idea of making a hybrid system, but I think that combining two already finnicky systems in a way that the whole is an improvement would be quite difficult. Would definitely love to chat ideas sometime if you are interested.

The explanation with descriptions and the “learned the hard way” really make this vid feel like the part in a superhero origin movie where the main character explains his gadgets. Incredible work man, wish these were really in every local grocery store.

This is awesome! One of the coolest uses of paracord we have seen to date! If the cord keeps snapping on you, one potentially simple upgrade would be to use 750 or 850 paracord instead of 550. Or if you really want to go crazy, use Dyna X which has a weight rating of 1250 lb. The diameter increase is pretty small. To anyone else reading this, paracord is not strong enough to be used as climbing rope. Use at your own risk!
Haha thanks for the comment! It was my third choice after kevlar and dyneema -- the dyneema melted, and the kevlar was too stiff to deal with shock loads effectively. Paracord might not have been the correct choice but it did get the job done!
I love this kind of videos where students/indie engineers build innovative tech, because it just proves how much further we could have already gone if only science industries weren't led by corporate businessmen who only care about maximum profit.

3 ideas :
first, make another one for your other arm. That way you can have 2 points of contact.
2. Make the end of the hook have radio controlled extend/retract controls. That way you can quickly detach the hook from the rope.
3. Add a light or a wide laser that will dissapate at the maximum range of the rope. Maybe a rangefinder on the laser?
With these adaptations, you could literally swing from tree to tree!

Strange how grappling hooks aren't produced commercially already. They can be a lot of fun, and practical.

Not really, when you really think about it, its probably for the best. The company responsible would be drowning in law suits from people who injured themselves and/or others using this (dislocated shoulders, impaled by the hook, falling from heights, and so many other stuff that can go wrong), costumers wouldn't use it responsibly, users would likely cause thousands of dollars in property damage and honestly I can see it becoming illegal quickly after being publicly released. Not only the tech itself is dangerous and unreliable af, I doubt the majority of costumers would use it for good purposes. Most likely people would use it for trespassing into private property with all sorts of nefarious motives.
Now if it was possible to do a grappling gun àla Batman/Ada Wong IRL, I imagine it would be severely regulated and would only be available for first responders for emergencies, and even then only be used in very specific cases and limited to highly trained individuals

@@edwardburns3781 Other possible additional solutions, use more than one, if one cord fails, the other is still supporting your weight. Also, attach differently to your end point, no rubbing on an edge. Maybe even specifically sheath the last few inches of the paracord to protect it.

I think that ANTI PERSONNEL gear could exist in real life, the only problem would be the hooks, once you get them in the wall the only way to easily retract them would be to have the hooks arms to close in, but there is no way to do that!
Except that all the technology exists, the idea would be to have two motors for each arm. Then put the 4 motors on the upper back and on the lower back a CO2 tank to fire the hooks!
