    I'm SO glad you said that, because I thought it was just ME that didn't understand ANYTHING that Grant Morrison writes! That's cheered me up no end, as I've been thinking I'm stupid for the past 20-odd years!

    I love those "1 toilet sitting" kind of books! I've seen the black and white Donald Ducks volumes and they are beautiful. My brother was all into "The Sandman" comics. Thanks again for the wonderful reviews.

    Great to learn that Stevens has a new book out. One of the very few artists I have original art from. Great list in general, cheers!

    Garlandia is fucking genius. Speaking of which, Sandman: Overture needed to be released as an Absolute; the 'deluxe hardcover' just wasn't deluxe enough for J.H. Williams III & one of the best artistic performances in the history of comics. I don't think my hyperbolic enthusiasm could ever overstate just how talented JHW3 really is, moving fluidly between painterly brush-strokes, a ligne-claire approximation of Jean Giraud's prime Blueberry artwork, and stylized homages to Alphonse Mucha, Winsor McCay, Dore-type steel-engravings, and the illustrations of Swiss Symbolist Carlos Schwabe. The uncolored original art was a much better choice than the Absolute Batman: Year One/Killing Joke inclusion of the original single-issue coloring... especially since it was those rushed, sloppy, outdated separations that prompted the decision to recolor it in the first place.
    The only real downside to the Absolute was seeing the Sandman: Overture Gallery Edition get resolicited. It promises to be one of the most stunning Artist's Editions yet, so I was pretty fucking disappointed; who knows when (or if) DC & Graphitti Designs will eventually release it. For me, the 8" x 12" original art just argued the necessity of seeing it full-sized, in the facsimile format.
    Also: yet another great video in the Best of 2018 series; it includes most of the independent & mainstream comic-cognoscenti-consensus favorites, as well as works I'd ignored or missed entirely... by a few decades, in the case of 'January Jones'.

    I took Eternity Girl and My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies to the toilet last evening and opted for the second. One sitting and done. And now to find that Eternity Girl might've given me...well, I won't say it. Still going to read it, but perhaps in the recliner, for safety.

    Glad to see Head Lopper on the list! I adore Black Hammer and Sandman Overture as well. Some new ones here for me! Have you read Kaijumax? I'm continually so so impressed by that series!

      IIRC it's OOP and replaced by Omnibus ver., but I might be mistaken.

      hmm, I checked on amazon (yes, I obviously have some love/hate relationship with that corporation): they have it still in stock for okay prices...
      or did you mean my video about it? it was panellogy 220

    • @fuzzuck

      @@HasAnyoneSeenSuperman As part of the Absolute Sandman series, it'll stay in print. The 2 'Absolute Wonderwoman by Azzarello/Chang' Volumes, on the other hand, like Morrison's Batman Absolutes, will probably not get another printing; the WW Omnibus is up on Amazon and ready for preorders, with a release date later this year. Chiang's art probably deserves to stay in print as an Absolute showcase, but the more OCD superhero junkies love the way that fat-ass Omnibus format looks on a shelf. So do I, but a variety of format options are always preferable.

      yeah, who knows, maybe next year I'll do a list with toilet sitting comics :)
      ... and as to Donald Duck I would actually agree about being more slice of life stuff ... at least in many stories. But Don Rosa tends to focus more on the adventurous side of my favorite duck ...and of Scrooge of course.

    honestly, what is it about usagi yojimbo that everyone seems to be loving it that much? Yet, I have too less knowledge to judge, which means I'll definitely need to dig further, though I read the free comic book day extract and found it quite... what is the word I am looking for? Trite, I guess. Being a huge fan of whatever stories featuring anthropomorphic animals, esp. if they are so well done and with a distinct recognition value, I was a bit disappointed by the result. Difficult to classify, making use of typical silly talk, which I frankly cannot stand and is absolutely inexcusable to me, since I felt like it wasn't done in a charming manner. Also, I could not figure out what audience they were attempting to target here. On the one hand, their behavior and all that's set up is looking like a children's comic, perhaps interesting for adults as well but then it randomly shows cruelty and murder and all those taboo themes, quickly dispatched just like that. The narration didn't quite have a guiding thread where all would eventually tie together, at least not in the way I am used to with seemingly great comics. Certainly would have expected something different, as it is claimed a masterpiece by so many and apparently surpasses the realms & restrictions of most contemporary cartoon publications. Do I have to give it another shot? I also don't know what issue I read or if it was the first one... maybe it is the umpteenth reboot?

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      difficult one... I can see your points even though I think most of them will vanish into thin air when you read some more. I found the drawings to be charming and the use of random violence rather surprising than disturbing (it's just the genre, I guess ... and I'm absolutely not familiar with nor a fan of "asian fight movies").
      "The narration didn't quite have a guiding thread where all would eventually tie together" No, the opposite is true!
      There's one long narration going on which combines all the short stories and story arcs & Sakai makes pretty good use of the characters that he had introduced once and comes back to them again and again with some kind of character development.
      Actually, the biggest attraction for me so far has been the cast of characters and their interplay ...
      Over all, it's nothing deep of course ... it's very easy to absorb, but frankly, that's part of the appeal for me.

    • @Xbale
      @Xbale 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@earlgrey862 thanks for the detailed response and explicit reference. Ok ok, I see that. I will give it another chance. Especially the fact that it is a consistent arc arouses my interest.
      "Asian fight movies" neither am I! Maybe it is that special flair that has to grow on you, (I am sure some won't understand the appeal of our favorite action & western movies), I also was a bit deterred by the first couple of pages of miller's ronin.
      ...and as I said, the art is reason enough to at least own one copy! No worries, I guess at some point I won't be able to hold my ardor back!
      oh and, great series of videos is what I should have stated at the beginning... cool to have seen both a one take and the use of a script over the last years.
