I got around on doing a few of these myself. I've used self-adhesive glossy paper for the front/back and the spine. It looks better and you don't have to deal with glueing all the sheets of paper and having glue marks under them.
Wish more single issues game in a nice box like this
I'm kind of tempted to get this just because of how nice the presentation of the whole package is
It looks neat. I might get this box set. I like the idea of comics in box sets.
Just waiting for mine (l hope soon). I’ve been trying to order this box since it was announced at the end of last year, but to no avail until now. I was tempted to get a book version when released in a near future, but I think this the best way to enjoy it. Keeping my fingers crossed. Craig Thompson is worth of this endurance ;)
Beautiful duotone printing and art by Mr. Craig Thompson. I know this will be published in a single volume (paperback / hardback?…) but, probably it won’t included the cover art, liner notes or any separates extras. Can you confirm this?…
he mentions a single volume that is solicited for spring 2025. And that he will re-arrange the material and probably add about 40 pages, maybe to the expense of the extras idk. So die-hard Thompson fans probably will have to get both versions to compare... all I can say is that I'm very glad with the box version, esp. since most of the issues have a distinct and different view on the whole subject matter, therefore I found the single issue format a very fitting one.
Hey Earl Grey you could split crime comics into four sub categories Private eyes and Journalist, Federal Agents And Police, Spy's, and Crooks and mobsters making a glorious 40 odd list ten each plus honourable mentions.
yeah, good idea... so many good ideas so little time 🤣

I do have all of the Tintin books (aside from Alph Art) although they're currently spread all around the house and not in the best condition (due to them being my childhood copies). Someday I really want to get that hardcover boxset, it looks really tempting.
I have all three of those. But great to be able to review them on TH-cam and see someone else's perspective on it. 'Burn Again' is my favorite also.
I read and loved Julio’s day. Picked up the heartbreak soup tpb. How much different are the non Gilbert stories? Not sure if I’ll like them
Beautiful books, so jealous of Franka books, don't think anything from Henk Kuijpers is available in English. From Mitton at least I can read Polish editions, Chronicles of Barbarians (very enjoyable book) has been published recently, Vae Victis should follow soon. Kuijpers' art is amazing, tempted to get something from him in any language... Hope you'll make full episode about him.
doing a video about Kuijpers & Franka would be fun, good idea... even though one of these pointing my finger in open wounds ones, because of the lack of an english translation
Fantagraphics just published it but it looks smaller than your version.
yeah, it's wayyyy smaller and I really was shocked when I saw it in someone's video. Very disappointing ... even though I think I still would recommend it.
I've been putting off watching this panellogy for a long time. Now that I finally got my hands on the Finnish version of Schninkel(available only in b&w) I allowed myself to watch this. It was unexpected mix of many things with bible, scifi- and fantasy classics. I found myself liking the dialog. Not so much what was said but how the characters interacted. It felt like the they were actually listening to each other. Possibly a small detail but one that stuck out for me. Rosinskis art is - almost unnecessary to say - gracefully easy on the eyes.
by the by i’m wondering if Jeff Smith knows Valerian and laureline/mezieres or christin. Laureline and Thorn remind me of each other a gigantic amount.
yeah, I hear you... another cross references for Bone
I just started getting into Olivier. He’s so good! There is a collected edition for Sunday coming out in the fall from fantagraphics. Will definitely be picking it up
that one will be one of the best books 24 already!
“a lizard with the mind of kant” i don’t think a lizard wants to be calle one

I never heard of this.
So jealous
Its a shame that there isnt an English release of this (at least it doesn't seem like there is one) would you say its still worth getting it even though I wont be able to read the dialogue?
if you're one of these mobile wizards who like to translate the text for you... probably... otherwise I would recommend to hope and wait for an english translation tbh
I've been reading comics since the late 80s & remember when this was being serialized. I was always impressed with Jeff Smith's cartooning skills, but I've still never read the entire series for the same reasons you described. I'm much more into science fiction themes than fantasy. Interesting how well our tastes align, you being European & I being American.
Not sure why but I find myself enjoying fantasy way more in comic books than in other media. Scifi is the main thing for me too.
What a lovely box set, and what a great video! Once again a terrific script, and I just settled into a zone of pure comfort.
after uploading this video I realized that you did a whole series about "Bone" which goes way more in depth, esp. about the different english editions... highly recommended to check out these videos from that criminally modest guy above :)
That IS a very nice box set! I have this series in b&w but the colors in this one are quite well döne. Some night scenes get added depth for instance.
What a boxset! Very enviable.
Super video 👍 Blueberry ist echt underrated und viele Amerikaner haben ihn irgendwie gar nicht auf dem Schirm
Blueberry is the greatest western saga ever created in the comic book medium. No one has ever come close. As an American fan, I only wish that one day we will get this series more widely reprinted, as of now, each copy is quite expensive, IF you can find them. They deserve to be widely reprinted. Such amazing works deserve to be spread far and wide for all to read.
Maybe this sounds stupid, but I think this Frankenstein's incarnation was the inspiration for Hulk.
I am French. I used to read my father's Blueberry albums when I was a kid. I loved them of course. And now, far away from my father's house, I sometimes feel nostalgic for it. Then I tried to find a good French video about Blueberry, but nothing came. But this video from a fellow European is great 😊
I recently got my hands on some Spirou collections. Two by Franquin, Two by Tome and Janry, the Rob-Vel one and the Jije one. I gotta admit...even though the Franquin ones were very good, I VASTLY prefer the Tome and Janry stories.
I picked up Glacial Period recently, and I really enjoyed it, although I do wish it focused more on the archaeologists trying to understand the various artworks (I was a little bit underwhelmed by the ending as well, since it felt kind of abrupt) I really like the art as well (the colours are absolutely gorgeous!), it kind of reminds me of the work of Taiyo Matsumoto, especially that kind of "scratchy" linework (funnily enough, Matsumoto and Nicolas de Crecy actually collaborated on an artbook once!)
To add to the titles confusion, here in Spain they decided to call it ''Laberintos'' which means ''Labyrinths''.
Hope to get my hands on these one day
Heads up that there is some extra unpublished content included in the Fantagraphics 'World's greatest cartoonists' FCBD issue from 2017. I picked it up after I read the first book (and LOVED it), but I decided to hold off on reading the FCBD issue content until the second books was released, because I assumed it would be included. I went back and checked after reading Book 2, and it turns out she didn't use that content, so the FCBD issue is the only way to read it currently. The story explains how her teddy bear 'Blemmy' got its head cut off. It doesn't have any huge revelations, but it feels at least as important as half of the content in Book 2 so it's strange that it wasn't included. I wonder if she's holding on to it for a future volume?
Just ordered that FCBD issue. Thank you for the heads up. This adds more weight for me to the idea that she intentionally altered book 2 so that at the very least a book 3 would be needed and possibly to "stick it to" Fantagraphics.
@@forgerelli1 Yeah, I came away with a similar suspicion after reading Book 2 and having a similarly disappointed/confused reaction to the one you share in the video. After reflecting on it for a while I think Book 2 feels more like a "Book 1.5". Like she maybe kept a lot of her best/favourite content for her upcoming book(s), and padded this one out with less important material. I have to wonder if reactions to this book would have been very different if they had managed expectations by making it clear from the outset that it doesn't wrap up the story. Framing is everything. If she knocks it out of the park with the potential future volume(s) I think it could also retroactively make this book a lot more enjoyable. Despite all this I will still be looking forward to any future work from Ferris, and I'm very curious to see if it will prove or disprove any of our speculation.
@@glennoctor4452 I've been looking more into her social media and recent interviews because I really want to know what happened with book 2 and I'm becoming more and more convinced that book 2 is not what it was supposed to be for whatever reasons. I'm still a huge fan of her work and will buy anything she does but I'm remembering why I stopped following her online, even after some interactions.

I don’t think anyone could fully give you an accurate interpretation of the ending as it is so vastly open to any interpretation. I saw it as Deze being responsible for much of the Anka story and Karen not wanna to face that truth in her note book. But anyone can give another interpretation easily. The whole blank spot at the ending sort of mirrors Deze with his brother and Karen doing the same to her father maybe but again the story is so frustratingly vague and the character of Karen so inconsistent with her age, nativity, intelligence etc., and the cracks in characterisation and plot really show up in book two far more than one. I felt the same at the end of book two though that it is not needed and book one as unfinished as it is, is fine on its own.
I had the same feeling about book 2. The big mystery is not explained and there is a great deal of vagueness. This might be my limitation as a reader. Maybe I’m missing something.
"Maybe I'm missing something" was exactly my initial thought while reading Vol.2, but then I realized: no, that's not me, it's the writing, simple as it is.

Already finish the story or still on going?
the story is still ongoing... but by a different artist of course
I enjoyed reading through The Tower, I think the artwork is excellent, and I find the setting and mystery very intriguing, although I'm not that keen on the romance between Giovanni and Milena, it kind of comes out of nowhere and I didn't really seem that believable to me, I think its also quite questionable that there seems to be a fairly big age gap between the two of them. I'm still interesting in checking out the other books in The Obscure Cities series though.
these kind of strange romances between old guys and much younger women is kind of a trope throughout many Schuiten/Peeters-stories... probably some kind of "alter ego wish"-thing since both creators are not the youngest dudes anymore.
Not a fan of Vittorio Giardino? Surprised you didn't mention any of his books, specially Max Fridman adventures, couldn't find more classic example of quality espionage comics. And a shame Jerome K. Jerome series had been cancelled after just two volumes (publishing them in singles wasn't best idea anyway). Two more recommendations from me - The Disarment by fantastic duo, Pirus and Mezzo (quite violent crime noir, for me on the same level as Stray Bullets, only one from two volumes published in English) and Saint Elme from F. Peeters and S. Lehman, one of my favourite titles of last year, with a lot of Lynch/Coen Brothers vibes.
thanks for the recommendations! As to Giardino: Actually I've did a deeper dive into his comics AFTER panellogy 280, so if I could redo that video I would put him into one of these lists for sure... actually I'm stalling on a a fave adventure comics for years now.
I don't get it. This book was named Daidalos and only available in german, but the author is american? Now they release it in english with a different title? Is that correct? Is english or german now the origal language of this comic?
Yeah, correct. I'm pretty sure that Burns wrote it in English and that they translated it into French and German.
These volumes are selling for $100 U.S
Thanks for the incredible journey. Now I understand how Crumb traded one sketchbook for his estate in France. Every page is priceless. Reminds of the anecdote about Picasso drawing a sketch in exchange for a meal. As a he was walking out the door, the restaurant owner called him back: Monsieur Picasso, you forgot to sign! - Of course, he replied, I bought the meal, not the whole restaurant!
good old Pablo :)
