    Thanks as always. The Francois Boucq title here in US is “Billy Budd, KGB” published in oversized/European paperback style by Dover Press with nice intro by American auteur Paul Pope. Nice to see this on your list and the “Ugliness “ of his character line plays well with the story as you mention.

    An english version of "armies" by dionnet and gal was published by humanoids a couple of years back.
    jean claude gal also drew a comic scripted by jodorowsky called "diosamante".
    it is awesome.
    excellent video as always.

      that's nice to know... so almost all books from the top ten are available in English it seems... well, maybe not the Loustal and I am not sure about Cosey

      I could pick it up as a super oversized hungarian edition, boundled with 'the cathedral'
      ... it is a great collection

      there's an English version from Humanoids ... seem to be rather "downsized" though

      @@earlgrey862 that edition comes also with all the "arn" cycle that dionnet and gal collaborated on metal hurlant.
      even though they are colored and I do believe that Gal's artwork shines on B&W.
      I strongly recomend that you check "Diosamante" out.

      @@FelipeAlejandroVasquezOlea the Humanoids' edition of Arn and Armies is bad because of the colour, which is not done by Gal. Diosamante on the other hand was done in colour by Gal himself, after Jodo told him that he would do a story for him only if he was going to add colour because he was already the master of black and white. Gal phoned him after 6 months saying he was ready. The introduction of Jodo is the best part of Diosamante because Gal died after the 1st of 4 tomes programmed. Though it had more potential than the stuffs done with Dionnet, which I consider a bad writer, infact I have the french integral version even if I don't understand french that well. Jean Claude Gal, that's enough.

    Great video as always! I'm reading my first Tardi book right now, Goddamn This War! I love Druillet but don't have The Night yet, so I best pick it up soon!

    Great selection, as always. I picked up The Land of the Sons a few months ago and love it (his most deep personal work up to now...). Gipi deserves an earl grey special, for sure.

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      of that I'm pretty certain... even though: it's the only book from Gipi that I've read so far. And I can't remember to have seen his name on another book

      earl Notes for a War Story, Garage Band, The Innocents (Wish You Were...), They Found the Car (Wish You Were Here vol.2) were all published in English but I don’t know if they’re still available. Another title will be published next year called A Story. If you can read french there are other titles around. Good luck...

      Actually the land of sons, which is absolutely good, is far from being his best. For me "Unastoria", "S." and "LMVDM" are his best.
      After Mattotti, Gipi is probably the best italian comic artist in activity.

      Michele Ferrara Grazie Michele. I’m actually aware of those titles but haven’t read any of them. I believe they are only available in italian, maybe french?...

    New Order's Bizarre Love Triangle and Jules and Jim are typically close to my heart, even though, luckily I haven't been caught in such a web. So, it will be fitting that the 3 books that interested me the most were: the adventures of jodelle, Voyage to Italy, and The man at the window. Great selection, as always.

    There’s a Beatles cover of “Besame Mucho” on that live at the BBC album that came out a while ago. If that’s anything to go by, it’s like sesame except the syllable is pronounced ay, rather than ee.

    Have you read Cosey's "In Search for Peter Pan"? The colors and portrayal of snow was top notch work in that book.

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree & it was actually a close call between Italy and Peter Pan (and Orchidea tbh)
      pan201 was about Cosey's comics: th-cam.com/video/1fMcT5m31TY/w-d-xo.html

    Armies by Gal is currently in paperback by Humanoids, hope they get the hardcover back soon though. I didn't have the money to buy it when it was out, mainly because I was busy completing my jodo collection, and now all I could get is the softcover. Also, Gal drew Jodo's Diosamante, he unfortunately succumbed to cancer before he could finish it. Great book, if you're not a feminist that is. It's a bit too "Taming of the Shrew" for feminists.

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      no... I'm not a feminist... ask my wife :P
      yupp, Diosamante looks very nice, but it seems the only comic from Gal that's published or at least available

    Like the top 20 was more closer to me than top 30 list, top 10 is even closer. Mine would be different, ofc, but I like them all. I would include Jodelle and Ici Meme for sure, though I don't consider Ici Meme to be the best Tardi's work, which, in my opinion, is The War of the Trenches or maybe The Scream of the People. Nevertheless Ici Meme is my fav of Tardi, no doubt. Ah, I've even read the last week that Tardi has done back then 12 pages of the 10th tome of Adele, which should have been the last, but after that he simply thought that he is not a serial cartoonist and for this I doubt that he will ever finish it. That's a shame.
    I assure you that The Man at the Window is highly considered in Italy by Mattotti's fans and non comic readers. I'm of that opinion too, so you're not wrong, though I prefer Fires, which is in my top 5 all times, Murmur and the one with Zentner. Maybe for some who know Mattotti only for his colors may think that, but he has shown different styles and this one is called "fragile line".
    The Loustal book you've choosen is also my fav, while for Cosey I'd pick Saigon Hanoi though Voyage in Italy is at the same level.
