In some sense gehrman did indeed care about the hunter by trying to kill him he was trying to free him from the curse of being trapped in the same nightmare that he was in. And by killing gehrman you freed him from the terrible existence that he has endured for countless years.
This entire fight is nothing but a tragedy. This is not a glorious final battle against a raving madman. This is not something to be proud of. Playing this with the Old Hunters in mind, the ending takes on new light. We’re not just freeing him from the service of the Moon Presence, we’re reuniting him with his comrades, and finally putting the Old Hunters to rest. No more guarding research halls or hiding secrets. No more arguments about the Healing Church or the college. No more blood, hunts or horrible dreams. The Nightmare is over, for them at least.
Easily one of the best boss fights in the game, and a fantastic conclusion to the story. I killed him on my first try, but that's because I finished Old Hunters earlier, so I was overleveled.

I finally beat Gehrman for the first time yesterday. A few years ago, when I got this game, I never thought I would get that far and face him. But now a few years later, I did it. This was my first Soulsborne game and it is now my most favorite out of all games I've played.
So, in the Childhood's Beginning ending, you take the place of a Great One, with all the powers this entails. Sounds great, right? Except that no matter how you decide to use that power, you'll only be replacing the Great Ones you just destroyed, and perpetuating the cycle. And as you grow more familiar with your power, you may realize that you spent most of the game killing those who had mankind's best interests at heart... Do you want to become humanity's defender? Rom was already doing that, by shielding humanity from the madness the Great Ones would cause, and holding their powers in check; she was Vacuous because she wasn't exploiting her power, and preventing other Great Ones from exploiting theirs. Her only reward for this restraint was to be slaughtered by the same people she was trying to protect. Want to uplift humanity to the same power and wisdom that the Great Ones enjoy? Mergo's Wet Nurse was nurturing and protecting humans who had the potential to become Great Ones, only to be killed by other humans who didn't know or care that she was trying to bestow power and privilege unto those in her care. Want to guide mankind without compromising their humanity? Ebrietas, Daughter of the Cosmos, was working through the Church to acclimate humanity to the world around them. Although much of the Church's actions may be considered unsavory, the knowledge Ebrietas provided was genuine. She was informing humanity about the actual truth about the universe, and it was the Healing Church which was misusing it. In the end, she was murdered by the same creatures she was trying to educate. Want to wipe out the Great Ones, forever freeing humanity from their influence and machinations? The Moon Presence was way ahead of you. In fact, if it hadn't been for the Moon Presence, the Hunt would never have existed, and you would have been dead meat within minutes of starting the game. It helped kill its fellow Great Ones for the sake of humanity, and humanity killed it in return. Of course, this does imply that just cooperating with it via the "Yharnam Sunrise" ending can get you a good enough result. Just want to withdraw from the affairs of men and gods and be left alone? The Mother Brain was completely passive when Mensis found and enslaved her, and was still utterly passive when you dropped her down a pit, climbed into said pit, and proceeded to hack her to bits. She's only a threat to you because her mere presence increased your frenzy, and there is no indication that this was intentional. Even if you try to be as benign as possible in your post-human state, those humans will still find you, bind you, research you, and go crazy from your presence, only for you to be butchered by those sent to clean up the mess when the crap inevitably hits the fan. Since there's no good helping humanity, why not just mess with it and strike fear into their minds with your almighty power, and bend their knees before you? If that's your answer, then you are no different to Amygdala. She, as an entity who rules over emotion and fear, chose to side with the School of Mensis and invoked total destruction and fear to humanity. Among the rest of the choices, perhaps this is the best answer to humanity? Feel free to lord over the hapless mortals, but enjoy it while it lasts; humanity is a tough lot, and sooner or later you will provoke a Hunter who has the skill and determination to take you on... Want to create a legacy that will outlast you? Good luck with that; all Great Ones are sterile, and the disastrous attempts to subvert this shortcoming is one of the central causes of all the death and misery you see throughout the game. Only Kos ever succeeded in birthing a child... and she gave her own life in order to accomplish this. They went to such great lengths to create their own protégés that most would have willingly cashed in their immense powers to start a family (something Kos herself put into action in the end). In the end, it doesn't matter how you use your newfound power, what you intend, or how you implement it; you are nothing more than another cog in the next cycle, and will accomplish nothing more than upholding the status quo. At least, until the Hunter from the next cycle finds you... This means, ironically, the Great Ones were more well-intentioned than the various humans you meet - the majority of the residents of Yharnam are rude to outsiders, if not in the middle of killing you, and think nothing of consuming "ignorant foreigners". Gherman is implied to be an former agent of the scholars (he mentions Lawrence while sleeping). The other Hunters are mostly insane and violent (even Eileen can be motivated to start hunting you, under certain conditions). The less said about the scholars, the Healing Church, and the School of Mensis, the better. The people in Cainhurst Castle became the Vilebloods. Humans Are the Real Monsters. Cosmic Horror Stories are set in a Crapsack World almost by default, but From Software takes it one step further; the unspeakable horrors from beyond (so often the source of madness) such as Rom and the Moon Presence are the ones most intent on preventing insanity while mankind is actively propagating it. Even among a genre infamous for its bleakness and despair, Bloodborne stands out. Bloodborne comes from the same developers (and might even be in the same universe) as Dark Souls. With that in mind, is it any wonder that humanity might be the real curse, after all? The concept of putting in so much effort but ultimately achieving nothing is pretty much a key trait of a Cosmic Horror Story; no matter what you did, you're only a very, very tiny and insignificant inhabitant of the universe, and other forces greater than you will override what you've done. In a brutal twist on the genre's normal conventions, it's the eldritch, unknowable alien beings who are the ones whose lives turned out to be insignificant in the face of humanity. One potential comfort to the Old Ones is that they aren't really dead. Merely shunted back into a sort of sleep. Essentially, we may have less "killed" them, so much as sent them to bed without dessert in the hopes that they'll learn from their courses of action ((EG, learn to leave humanity alone for the time, as they're not yet mature enough to handle the true cosmos)). After all... "That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons, even death may die"
There were moments while playing Elden ring I thought it surpassed Bloodborne as greatest game ever made, but after finishing Elden Ring, and some analysing of both games, I still think Bloodborne is the GOAT. It is unmatched in level design, artstyle, atmosphere, enemy design, bosses, story and combat. Unless Bloodborne 2 is made, with the same love and dedication as the first title. I doubt I will ever play a better game than Bloodborne. A near perfect masterpiece only held back by techncial hiccups mainly due to the atrocious machine it was made for (playstation 4), other than that Bloodborne is pure videogame art.
To be honest, I haven't played Elden Ring. But I have seen alotta vids n I think its a better game than Bloodborne (which I have played but couldn't finish..lost my save game folder). But the best FromSoftware game is Sekiro...by far. Although Bloodborne had better visuals by way of its environmental design, Sekiro takes the cake for me.
They're both masterpieces, but Elden Ring is the Goat for me. Game design, customization, adventure and difficulty, Elden Ring has them all. And let's not ignore the fact that Elden Ring is one of the best reviewed games of all times.
Bloodborne felt really organic and atmospheric… nearly magical. I think the fact that no music is playing when you are outside a boss combat reinforce that aspect of the game. Now, Elden Ring is out, but I am a little bit bored of the music playing all the time. I wish that there is a option like « boss music only »
Playing bloodborne after consantly hearing overworld music because of elden ring makes the game scarier imo, because instead of hearing music you notice the scream, voices, and other stuff that makes me get chills everytime i go anywhere on bloodborne.
I still remember this boss fight as one of my greatest moments in 16 yrs of gaming... I beat it on the first try, taking it slowly using parries everytime I could (the only souls game were I was good at parrying). I still remember being blessed by the soundtrack and having the chorus come up the exact same moment he went into his second phase... I will cherish it for ever.
Games like these are great since everyone has hard times on different bosses. Personally I’ve only ever died to Gerhman once because parrying him isn’t that bad when you know his set but I love this fight so much it’s great!
He's one of thr fights along with Gascoigne where I know it's not that hard and I can just parry them but I chose not to ever parry because I love the dance of us both dashing around trading blows
i did the chalice dungeons before gehrman and moon presence. going from watchdog of the old lords (6+ hours), amygdala (another four hours), and abhorrent beast (probably five hours), to then beating queen yharnam, gehrman, and mp on my second try each was something else haha
I miss the days where games felt like adventures. I can only count a few games in the recent memory that gave me that feeling, most of them were From Software games, this game especially, it brings you back to those Soul Reaver, Crusaders of Might and Magic, Rune and Severance days.
@@beandeh oh god yes!!!! I second Hollow Knight. I considered Bloodborne my top game for the story/visuals/sound/perfect gameplay, but I was recommended Hollow Knight by my brother- ignored him cos I thought it looked average. But when I played it (and got pass the beginning area), I was OBSESSED. I don't play games more than once, but I've easily finished that three or four times now. Hollow Knight is brilliant, and made with a much smaller team and smaller company so it's fascinating HOW good it is.
Part of me wishes that if you choose to kill gehrman and go to ng+ the final boss is not gehrman but instead your hunter. As the cycle continues and you are a new hunter under the tutelage of your character
Same, Sekiro was my first fromsoft game but thats kinda different from these, so I can say this was my first. Next I tried DS3 cuz everyone was talking about it, and I got tired of it after the second boss. Next was Demon Souls that I completed once but NG+2 was so difficult that it made me drop the game :,(

Imagine a Souls boss that heals in response to every heal you use, that copies the buffs and every other advance you take. Have they already done that in a soulsborne?
Even though we be on that Elden ring hype right now I still think this is the best final boss in the soulsborne series (Including Elden ring and Sekiro)

Always loved this game, and I have been playing elden ring since released, have to say From software is making game history like Blizzard in the 2000s.
This fight with Herman is a kind of duel of compassion. Both hunters are ready to become prisoners of the Hunter's Dream in order to free the enemy/comrade. And the way they look at each other before Herman pulls out the Burial Blade... It gives me the creeps.

I rmemeber quitting the game halfway through like a punk but so glad i came back to it to finish it. Even to this day I still can't decide if this or Sekiro are the better game but something in me says BB. Even when people say which of the souls are the best and I say BB they don't even know what they are missing. Even just the sounds Gherman makes are legendary. At the end of the journey there are just two hunters left to finish the hunt
"Tonight, Gehrman joins the hunt......" While elden ring is amazing, remember that Bloodborne is From Software's magum opus and a game changer for future soulsborne games to come. It is my favorite ps4 game of all time.
Thus the term soulsborne has reached to everyone's mind. And we should thank From Software for that. Elden Ring is amazing and one brilliant game of the year contender.
I remember first seeing this game on the PlayStation store for like 10$ since it was on sale and thinking “we’ll I always wanted to get into the soulsbourne games.” Then after playing for like an hour (not even getting out of central yarhnam) I put the game down and stopped playing it. I think at the time I remember thinking “this game is try on hard and has really weird control schemes. It’s just not for me” after three months I still say the game in my library and said “ehh why not. Don’t got anything else to do.” After that moment, something in me just clicked to the game. I don’t know what it was that clicked with me, but I think it was me trying adapt to the game rather trying to let the game adapt to me type deal. I remember vividly that playing for what felt like hours. Beating the game once just wasn’t enough for me. I beat the game 4 times. All in the span of a month. Then when I heard that there was DLC I immediately bought it. Played that one though and it still wasn’t enough. I then did the chalice dungeons. AND THAT STILL WASN’T ENOUGH. So then I decided to platinum the game. Then finally after putting 200 something hours into the game, it was finally enough. Thank you bloodborne for awakening the fire inside of me to want to do better. Thank you.

One of the best thoughts I have ever read about Bloodborne.
This here should be pinned
Damn you wrote a whole-ass essay lmao, but a very good one.
Well...damn
not reading all that
There were moments while playing Elden ring I thought it surpassed Bloodborne as greatest game ever made, but after finishing Elden Ring, and some analysing of both games, I still think Bloodborne is the GOAT.
Facts. Such a beautiful design and very interesting lore.
Opinions are always fun to tell
To be honest, I haven't played Elden Ring. But I have seen alotta vids n I think its a better game than Bloodborne (which I have played but couldn't finish..lost my save game folder). But the best FromSoftware game is Sekiro...by far. Although Bloodborne had better visuals by way of its environmental design, Sekiro takes the cake for me.
@@rvziel_kain I agree with you. Sekiro is perfection. Beautiful combat mechanics.
@@zero0creativity and that’s precisely why I like more BB over Elden Ring
The audio in Bloodborne is definitely creepy. Like a weird haunted house. Definitely sets a mood.
Elden Ring is a blast, but I still think Bloodborne is superior. The gameplay mechanics of quickstep and rally are brilliant!
Yeah, the combos you are able to do with the weapon are just unique.
And Bloodbornes soundtrack is superior as well
lol. The memes were right.
I love BloodBorne, but Elden ring is on a completely different league, is Dark souls natural evolution
The weapons also kick ass. Love how you have two ways to fight with each weapon and can switch back and forth mid combo
3:13 Gehrman turns to the Moon. 4:21 twice. cool detail.
Wow nice notice
Bro never thought about that. Good perception.
Bloodborne is an absolute masterpiece! Gehrman is my favourite character in bloodborne, his both menacing and epic!
1:31 that dialogue ❤️❤️
Games like these are great since everyone has hard times on different bosses. Personally I’ve only ever died to Gerhman once because parrying him isn’t that bad when you know his set but I love this fight so much it’s great!
He's one of thr fights along with Gascoigne where I know it's not that hard and I can just parry them but I chose not to ever parry because I love the dance of us both dashing around trading blows
i did the chalice dungeons before gehrman and moon presence. going from watchdog of the old lords (6+ hours), amygdala (another four hours), and abhorrent beast (probably five hours), to then beating queen yharnam, gehrman, and mp on my second try each was something else haha
masterpiece 10/10 for all time
Even the mighty Shirrako getting a run for his money by Gehrman.
I miss the days where games felt like adventures. I can only count a few games in the recent memory that gave me that feeling, most of them were From Software games, this game especially, it brings you back to those Soul Reaver, Crusaders of Might and Magic, Rune and Severance days.
Please try Hollow Knight then ;)
@@beandeh oh god yes!!!!
Hollow Knight is brilliant, and made with a much smaller team and smaller company so it's fascinating HOW good it is.
i’d recommend playing the witcher 3 wild hunt if you havent already
there's tons of games with "adventure" or the rpg element .. the past 10 years have had amazing games or are you blind?
@@leftoverzaggy you misunderstand what I meant, no need to be rude, just read more carefully next time.
Part of me wishes that if you choose to kill gehrman and go to ng+ the final boss is not gehrman but instead your hunter. As the cycle continues and you are a new hunter under the tutelage of your character
I was thinking about that lol
I finished EldenRing recently, for me Bloodborne still the BEST fromsoft game.
Amen
Same
Same. Elden Ring is like a mixture of all Soulborne games.
Unless we get bloodborne 2 this will remain one of the best games I've ever played
No
This was my first ever souls game which is why it’s my favorite. Absolutely brutal game for you first souls game and I had over 200 hours in it
Same. Didnt even know what soulsborne was just bought it cuz i saw a cool video of it years ago. Now soulsborne is my fave series
I still love it
is it?
Same, Sekiro was my first fromsoft game but thats kinda different from these, so I can say this was my first. Next I tried DS3 cuz everyone was talking about it, and I got tired of it after the second boss. Next was Demon Souls that I completed once but NG+2 was so difficult that it made me drop the game :,(
A moment like this is why a love video games. How a game can tell a story through gameplay and lore and hit this hard. And the fight, arena and atmosphere. And omfg the music…….perfect. 🙏❤️
Imagine a Souls boss that heals in response to every heal you use, that copies the buffs and every other advance you take.
Have they already done that in a soulsborne?
Actually in Elden Ring is boss which matches to your description
Mimic boss literally does that expect for the buff I think

Always loved this game, and I have been playing elden ring since released, have to say From software is making game history like Blizzard in the 2000s.
This fight with Herman is a kind of duel of compassion. Both hunters are ready to become prisoners of the Hunter's Dream in order to free the enemy/comrade. And the way they look at each other before Herman pulls out the Burial Blade... It gives me the creeps.
This game is a masterpiece. I'm glad Elden Ring came out cuz it feels like both Dark Souls 4 & Bloodborne 2 at the same time.
I would love another bloodborne game that's a prequel where you get to see hunters like Gehrman, Maria, and Ludwig in their prime. That would be so sick
Bro they are more than their prime now because of their inhuman abilities
Ludwig is a different situation tho
This game is epic fire from beginning to end. That last fight was something 😅😁
I have fucking stockholm syndrome with this game. It put me into so much mental, emotional pain and abuse yet its my favorite game of all time and i keep coming back to it at least once a year.

Thank you.
