I've been digging into the music of the FromSoft games and WOW. What's your favorite? What else should I cover?? Also, if you're looking to start learning, pick up the Intro to Piano course for 50% off!! betterpiano.com/intro-to-piano
Please listen to some of Elden rings music
Gwyn theme ( or Soul of Cinder - its kind of hereditary theme)
Elden Ring's Godrick, the Grafted OST, is absolutely impressive. I Highly recommend it.
please listen to "Celestial Emissary" from the Bloodborne sound track
God Devouring Serpent for sure - youre going to have a lot of fun (and probably a damaged brain) doing this one - i promise :) Although in terms of favourites, this scores only second after the Dark Souls 3 Main Theme and maybe Pontiff Sulyvahn from Dark Souls 3 as well
Ah yes. This gem.
how come you're here unnoticed
God
Okay what your just in the comments and nobody is noticing?? Hi Marco hope your well!
@@lancerhades971 haha hi! I’m great!
that's funny i was just watching one of your videos before this one and then here you are too
Gwyn, Lord of cinder is the Soundtrack of the final Bossfight of DARK Souls 1.
Its quite iconic and has a similar Tone to this. You gotta check it out
Immediately followed by Soul of Cinder's theme from DS3. Revolutionary shit
The infamous Pling pling plong
Yes
@@MoonWalkerTexsRanger plim plim plim plim plong
I had never noticed the similarities with Adagio for Strings… but now I can’t un-hear it, and I LOVE IT!!
These should be the latin lyrics of the final part:
"Venator
Ah mi sumo vela mala
Anima do res mihi somne restas
Luna insidiosa
Mira tenebrarum
Di vises mi miserere aeterna"
It can be roughly interpreted as:
"My Hunter
Let the evil be hidden (from you)
My life devoted to sustaining the Dream
The insidious Moon
The wonderful darkness (or "These mysterious nights")
Great One, look upon me and grant eternal mercy"
Thank you for the insight
@@Resistance012 I see what you did there
Oh my god, you have to check out Slave Knight Gael’s theme from Dark Souls 3. It has four phases lol. And they somehow manage to elevate it every time. And it really combines the “epic boss theme” with the tragedy you talked about in blood borne. That and its counterpart “For The Dark Soul,” which wasn’t even in the game, I truly believe are two of the greatest pieces of music ever written for media.
I think it's fantastic that you keep harping on about modes, other examples to the one presented in the video etc. Learning the scale degrees where half steps occur and drilling that stuff on the keyboard is one thing, but you gotta have someone deeply familiar with modes to give you real-world examples that really convince you of the emotional potential of each mode - y'know something to LISTEN to and experience. Rick Beato does that using original compositions, which is cool and pretty good (if a little indulgent imho), but it's these mainstream cultural examples that pack that extra punch and relevance for me. This is gold, thank you.
Another video game track I love that does a lot similar to this is 'The End Of The Battle' from Shadow Of The Colossus.
Most of the actual boss themes are your usual epic fare, nothing new, but the moment you kill each Colossus it goes not to a triumphant swelling victory song to congratulate you, but to a slow and sombre track that almost seems to lament each creature you've killed. Which, ultimately, makes sense.
When you take a step back and separate yourself from the basic game structure of "My current objective is to go here and kill this guy", you really have no reason to go after the Colossi other than "Dormin told you to". They're not rampaging, the land isn't even particularly inhabited by anyone who could feel threatened by their presence. They're just innocent peaceful creatures who only ever turn violent in self-defence, and once the adrenaline rush of fighting them wears off that realisation is all you're left with.
Sorry to be crass, but it's basically post-nut clarity in orchestral form.
Cello is the boss of instruments so I’m not surprised it works for a boss battle. 😉 Thank you so much for the break down!!
The First Hunter was one of melodies I first learned on violin. Not the very first, but the one that I put the most time into, coming back to it again and again for the weight that it carried.
Oh, dude, not Fromsoft, but you've gotta check out the Shadow of the Colossus soundtrack.
It has a similarly tragic After the Battle theme, but SotC has such an untouchable soundtrack for the boss fights.
I'm thinking of songs like The Opened Way specifically.
Absolutely!!!!!! SotC is such a dark horse of a soundtrack, definetely worth the analysis
soc inspired almost every epic soundtrack, amazing music
Good call!
i just started playing it and I already am obsessed with the soundtrack
👍 The Consouls did a great cover of A Path Opened
This was absolutely the best music analysis of Bloodborne I've seen! I'm so glad you brought up the lore!
Great pick! And i'm glad you delved into a bit of the reasons behind this fight and the lore. It sounds like you've either played the game before or have a lot of respect for it already?
I became a TH-cam partner this year off my lofi hip hop music, creating things is daunting. But your genuine enthusiasm and excitement for new music and max chromas stats got me feeling inspired.
Bloodborne is definitely one of my favourite games of all time, an absolute masterpiece. Please do Gwyn, Lord Of Cinder. It's also a beautifully tragic OST and one of the few video game soundtracks that I listen to without being actively playing a game
_THE SADDEST OF ALL KEYS_
I adore the soundtrack of this game, 'Ghermans theme' and 'The hunter' imparticular because of how they PERFECTLY capture the emotion of what they're depicting. One expresses the pure tragedy of ghermans situation and yours of the fact that nobody wins, and the other expresses how despite being in a world full of monsters, the hunters are the most horrifyingly overwhelming and powerfully sinister things in it
I legit tear up every time I listen to this track. It is hands down my favourite piece of videogame music ever made.
Gehrman the first hunter is one of my favorite songs in any game. The way that the music helps tell the story is immaculate. FromSoftware's music as a whole is very good at this, but this song mixed with the atmosphere and the story of the game. Created one of the greatest final boss themes of all time. So much emotion oozing out of every part of this.
My favorite boss theme in general from bloodborne is Ludwig's theme (which you should DEFINITELY check out), but nothing beats the narrative piece this song serves as. When I beat Gherman for the first time it was a hollow victory, it was a battle and struggle, but the emotions this piece puts in you even subconsciously can't be ignored, even in the heart of battle.
A true masterpiece that hasn’t received enough recognition. Thank you 🙏🏻
Something really clicked for me when you mentioned how the two half-step resolutions the Aeolian mode has without moving into the harmonic minor are both descending: 3-2 and 6-5.I never really understood how modern composers create strong directional motion in just natural minor, but that little bit of info makes so much sense.
The entire album is worth doing a deep dive into, every track, including the Old Hunters, I'd happily watch a 2-3 hour video of you analysing all of it!
Charles another song you must cover is Gwyn lord of cinder from dark souls 1 it's also the final boss there. Can't wait to see it!
This has been one of my favorite songs ever for a while. I’m so glad that you got into it and showed why it’s so amazing and tragic.
Man please do the ds series as well. Gwynn, firelink shrine I & III, secret betrayal, Majula, Sanctuary Guardians, Dark Sun Gwyndolin, so many fantastic pieces of music. Nameless Song and Ancient Dragon as well
Out of those, I gotta give it to Majula, but Sir Alonne and Artorias are my top choices.
He should do Ludwig the accursed/holy blade ost, it would be Amazing
Following on the Soulbourne hype - pleeeease look at Soul of Cinder - the build up, the echo to Gwyn's theme - beautiful
Bloodborne was my first FromSoft game that launched me into a world of obsession with the rest of them. Still to this day, one of my all-time favorite games and favorite soundtracks, hands down. ESPECIALLY the DLC, holy shit. Lady Maria's theme is *chefs kiss*
It's a different style of music but in terms of feeling this reminds me of funeral of flowers from Fire Emblem Three Houses.
The battle themes in that game usually have 2 versions. 1 "rain - version" for the map overview which is more subtle and 1 "thunder-version" for the combat sequences which have much heavier percussion. Funeral of flowers turns that on it's head by going extremely hard on the rain theme and then switches to pure piano for the thunder version. It really adds the the finale of the route.
Another game that is really good with these classical harmonies is Layers of Fear. The opening theme alone makes me just want to well up with tears from it's beauty, but it's also full of notes of erieness.
It is not about "boss fights", but the tragedy of the story described through music is very strong in "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture" by Jessica Curry. Not much of a game, rather than an interactive story. But the plot and it's connection to music stays with me to this day.
This track makes me cry every time. Unbelievably beautiful
This is what makes game a apsolute masterpice the music is also needed
Yeah, I'll give you a weird one Charles: check out "Tenchu - Battle with Onikage"
(pay attention to final 2:58 part too!).
I've never heard game music like this anywhere else. Crazy blend of acoustic, & synth, East + West. The main theme heard in the opening song "Addua", & in the "Training Mission" soundtracks are something special too. Acoustic classical guitar solos are not often heard in game music, to my knowlege, but they are in this game!
If you haven't heard the choral adaptation of Adagio for Strings (Agnus Dei in that form), listen immediately. My favorite recording is Robert Shaw conducting the Robert Shaw Festival Singers with Areitha Lockhart. Absolutely hauntingly beautiful
Bloodborne is full of excellent music. Ludwig's and Laurence's themes (both from the Old Hunters DLC) are some of my favorite boss themes ever.
Makes me think of Pure Vessel from Hollow Knight - that theme really surprised me when I first heard it for largely the same reasons. It's solemn and beautiful and nothing about it connotates action, and yet it plays in one of the hardest boss fights in the game.
Great video. You should definitely do "Gwyn, Lord of Cinder" from Dark Souls 1, then as a bonus do "Soul of Cinder" from Dark Souls 3 with its callback to Gwyn's theme.
Please have a look at cleric beast theme from bloodborne. It is a melody you hear the first time you meet a true deformed beast to which tge clerics turn in this nightmare. Gives chills every time
Tsukasa Saitoh os a genius throughout any of the songs he touches. I would, as many others on here have suggested, check out the DLC as well. Many have suggested Ludwigs theme, but Laurence, the First Vicar is similar in nature to this final fight.
Also, have you ever given thought to checking out Electros Theme from The Amazing Spiderman 2? It was a lesser recieved movie, but Electros theme was one of the most dominant OST's I had ever heard. "The Electro Suite"
i feel so blessed because i haven't played BB yet, and i get to experience it for the first time soon.
It's funny you would bring up Darkness of the Unknown from KH2 cause the final phase is surprinsingly sombre and tragic sounding as well. That entire fight, including the music, is such a rollercoaster, and I love it. Hope you dive some more into other Fromsoft titles cause man their music truly tells stories.
Weird suggestion. But my favorite Boss fight theme is from Sonic Triple Trouble (on the Sega Game Gear). The rest of the OST is fine and maybe that's why Sunset Park Act 3 stands out so much for me. It perfectly captures the surprise fight that is running on the back of a train you didn't know you were on top of.
I dont know anything about music scales or playing the piano, but I see Bloodborne and I click
Great connection to Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings! Love that song
The theme at 10:07 feels almost like a leitmotif (though changed) on the music from Lady Maria's boss fight (which I'd definitely love to see you respond to!). It's not exactly the same notes -- the last two are changed to be a bit more somber -- but it's functionally the same, and I believe intentional considering the history between Gehrman and Lady Maria and what they did based on the plot of the Old Hunters DLC.
One of my favorite boss themes has been Dancing Mad from Final Fantasy VI, a track I've been listening to for about 30 years now and can still appreciate for its brilliance (and of course the Black Mages version is the best to listen to!). Part of what makes it so great is the motifs throughout its phases that call back to some of the earlier themes from the game (Kefka's original theme, the intro song, etc). "World Revolution" from Chrono Trigger is another fantastic one from that era.
Two modern boss themes I love for their "punch you in the face" aggression are "Incoming!" from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and "Deadly Temptation" from Ys VIII.
I listened to this song blind of all lore and context and still cried Stendhal tears.
As a massive music and fromsoftware fan, i salute you!
This is an amazing video and i appreciate your overall enthusiasm in analyzing this masterpiece.
Take care! ✌🏼
In a very similar vein of big big boss themes that are just tragic and sad, The Power of Jin from Xenoblade 2 comes to mind.
I read the entire berserk manga with this soundtrack in the background. Fit so perfectly
Those two phrases reminds me of a part from the Lion King when the heard is running wild and Mufasa saves Simba and starts climbing up the wall.
I second the calls for Ludwig
But id be remiss if i didn't recommend Laurence, the First Vicar from the same DLC pack of Bloodborne.
Its more liturgical in nature but the overwhelming sadness and fury the music conveys truly tells Laurences' story. Its incredible.
I know we did an episode on hollow knight already but the second half of sealed vessel does the same thing. Absolutely wrenching your heart into feeling for the tragic events that led you and the final boss there.
All the music in this game is so great, I'm sure Ludwig's theme has been said already. Elden Ring also has some great themes, Godskins and Fortisaxx are probably my favs
It's even more tragic knowing that gehrman is still waiting for laurence to come and save him from his fate as host of the hunter's dream, without knowing that laurence actually turned into a beast inside of the nightmare and will never come back. The healing church's attempt to defeat Kos's curse through the hunter's dream has failed, but gehrman has no idea of this and can never escape his fate, unless you take his place, or you defeat the moon presence.
One of my favourite boss fight experiences ever.
This song is very much in the same vein as Gwyn's theme from Dark Souls. You expect this huge final boss theme but you get something sad instead. With Gwyn you spend the entire game hearing about this man like he's a god, a hero, a great king, larger than life but when you find him he's barely more than skin and bone, he's ragged, his clothes are torn, he's a shadow of the man you've heard about and you have to defeat him and the music is a sad piano piece instead of these huge orchestral pieces with epic choruses that you've been used to by this point. It makes you not want to fight him. Dark Souls and Bloodborne both make you say "I'm so sorry, old man." right at the end of the game.
This is amazing! thank you for introducing me to this master piece of a track!
If you're looking for epic game music, maybe try the Runescape theme song!
Pls Do golden sun music analysis. All the battle themes kick my ass in more ways than one.
Have you ever listened to "Shadowlord" from Nier Replicant? It's another one of my favorite boss themes. While it has the tempo and drive of a more traditional boss theme, it carries a lot of the somber energy as this one does. It's one of my favorite pieces of videogame music ever.
Please dive into some more FromSoft boss music. You could do Gwyn, Lord of Cinder the final boss from DS1 and then Soul of Cinder the final boss from DS3
It would be better in that order too
Charles finally realizing the genius of Fromsoft osts
Very unknown indie game that does this very well is Ikenfell ! One of my favorite games ever and one of my favorite VG soundtracks ever
The final boss has a very dark very sad and tragic track like this one it’s so beautiful
I reeeeally want to see you cover the Messmer the Impaler boss ost.
Lady Maria and Ludwig is definitely on the top of the chart for beautiful bloodborne boss fight music.
The song is like crying uncontrollably
A lot of people that don’t understand blood-borne could learn a lot from this video of yours. If this doesn’t help them, understand the game, nothing will.
just got to this boss today, thank you for analyzing the music i will be hearing for the next 10 hours
Lady Maria’s theme has some incredible harmony if you fancied doing that too!
Bloodborne moment number 32.6
If you are interested in the unusual Themes from From Software boss fights: are you aware of Elden Ring's Rennala's theme? This is the most unusual theme I have heard in a boss fight ever. Beautiful and haunting.
I second that absolutely!
How about Radhan's theme from Elden Ring? It's an excellent composition, incredibly fitting, memorable, powerful. And yes, Gherman's track is one of my favorites.
if you could do some of the boss themes from ori and the will of the wisps, that would be awesome. gareth coker is an amazing composer
Hearing you talk about and reacting to music is soo great ^_^
Also looovee Bloodborne
i miss the soundtrack so much im sulking here , the music just hits different
Please PLEASE do Gwyn, Lord of Cinder and Ludwig The Accursed
Bloodborne ist a GOATed game, this video deserves many more views!
Other themes from Bloodborne you should totally react to are Ludwig the Holy Blade. If you want another great one I recommend Laurence, the First Vicar
The dancer of the boreal valley
For some reason that theme never really makes in into these kinds of videos
the build up with the orchestra reminds me of "Atmadja" by Cirque du Soleil
I read the title and thought moon presence ost was getting some love for once lol
Maybe someday
as a good hunter, never say no to ludwig's question. play lullaby for baby mergo, and free gehrman from the dream.
thank you for the breakdown. i cry everytime i hear this piece 😢
I feel like I need a breakdown of the Sekiro's music now
Yuka Kitamure is one of the best composers of this generation for sure.
Charles, can you make an analysis on Chicago Transit Authority or Delírio Carioca?
Please, you have to look at Laurence The First Vicar's boss theme. It perfectly encapsulates this feeling of hopelessness and is definitely my favourite theme from Bloodborne
Well, we've opened the can of worms... The Final Battle from Elden Ring is awesome too! Would love a vid on that
Admittedly, I thought to myself when I saw the video thumbnail "can't say I remember specifically any melodies from Bloodborne," until Gehrman popped up on the screen "Oh YEAH," such a memorable moment.
Please, go for “Gwyn, Lord of Cinder” from Dark Souls’ last boss fight!!
god i would LOVE if you made a channel or videos where you just react to video game music. i don't care how you'd do it, i just want to see what you think about every song
It's a goddamn requiem.
There is a reason this is the most played song on my phone
i would love for you to listen to some octopath traveler tracks
This is a weird request. First time tuning in btw. But there's this song that has and interesting piano part and I love for you to break it down. Its called Cauchemar by MIRAR. And I am just curious on your thoughts on it.
you should definately listen to "Godskin apostles" you will love this song
Gherman and Ludwig
The top top TOP 2 of the best boss themes ever made.
I find it very hilarious that, when you had to pick a random final boss theme to show how they're usually much more frantic and energetic compared to this one, you chose Darkness of the unknown, a piece that actually becomes calm and tragic EXACTLY like Gehrman's theme, after 4:21. Great video anyway :)
Something like Gehrman, the Old Hunter would have been great for Anakin vs Obi-wan in Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
