I find the inherit symbolism in what kind of beast people turn into to be really fascinating, and one of the unsung purposeful details in Bloodborne. Most people turn into some kind of wolf, symbolizing their mindless violence (though Amelia is more of a deer-dog thing? Not sure what that's about). Then of course there's the Beggar who retains both his human face and his intelligence, which either makes him more or less monstrous! Then there's Ludwig. Ludwig gets turned into a horse. A workhorse if you will. Ludwig was the workhorse of the Church, and an adherent to the moonlight greatsword, which he himself admits he never tried to understand. He was basically the ultimate follower, somebody who did whatever people wanted him to do and didn't ask any questions--exactly who Gehrman tells us to be in the beginning of the game. So he becomes a horse, a famously panicky and finicky animal, a creature that lashes out in fear. It makes him much more pathetic than the other beasts. Even more so than Gascoigne or Amelia, I feel like I'm putting down a suffering animal whenever I fight Ludwig. That is, until he reclaims his humanity--the only beast to do so. What a game.
Also fitting that the church hunter who expected to come across far larger and more terrifying beasts turned into the largest and most terrifying beast in the game
Also worth noting the other side of the horse. That they are commonly seen as majestic and heroic. Fitting of the hunter Ludwig was and became during his fight
Great symbolism but im pretty sure he just fused with his horse, probably because he would have been a hunter on horseback. That could also explain the extra limbs and the even for bloodborne extreme disfigurement
The noble steed. The one whom a knight rides upon into battle. Despite it all, it only took one glance to return the hero to the battlefield. Sadly... It was on the wrong side.
This boss.....this is the boss that is clear proof how Bloodborne is masterclass. The moment of introducing the legendary moonlight greatsword with *THAT* music is so good, it made this already awesome fight into one of the best.

Bloodborne was my first souls game, when I got to the DLC and fought ludwig for the first time I had never before experienced a boss that was as aggressive as he is in phase 1, it took me a while to get over the fact I had no clue on how to go about attacking him but eventually I beat him and the rest of the DLC :D
The storytelling in this fight is the best in the game, in my opinion. You as the hunter are able to kill the beast in Ludwig, allowing his humanity to wake up and remember who he was. Ludwig knows it's over for him, that he's beyond saving, but the clarity and relief in his voice shows he that he knows he's been gone a long time and he's happy knowing he'll die as a man. I think the only missing line of dialogue here would be, "Finish me, hunter. Let me die as the Holy Blade." Edit: corrected some typos
Not only my favorite boss in Any From Soft game, but this is my go to example when I point how important music is in any media. Phase 2 of this fight when it becomes a waltz, is one of the most poignant moments of any Bossfight I have ever played. The boss moving to the beat and the rhythm constantly, forcing you to for lack of a better term analogy - dance… Is something that we had hardly ever seen before. Music and sound design have always been important… but this fight alone is such a blatant example of both, it is awesome to watch peoples first experience of it.
THIS is my favorite boss from Bloodborne. Even though he gave me a stressful time with his phase one. In the end, I let him rest while seeing the moonlight. Hey Ludwig, thanks for the weapon.
Fought him and beat him for the first time today (as well as the whole game). Awesome boss fight and one of the best boss themes in any video game imo.

First time fighting Ludwig I was struggling with his Beast phase forever. Once I got him to half health and he pulled out the Moonlight greatsword, I died thanks to complete shock. The beast that's been destroying me, is now standing up and is wielding the most famous greatsword by Fromsoftware
I had a similar experience, but i died in the second phase because i was so utterly enamored by the music i was pretty much driven to tears. Then, after i beat him, the tragedy sunk in that i wont get to hear that glorious music until i come back around in ng+ I think ill start a new run and just get a character to ludwig but never beat him, just so i can go back to that fight whenever.
I like this boss fight, because of how it changes. The 1st phase, he is lashing out like an animal in danger, his moveset is chaotic, there is no flow to it, he is quick to attack, there is a lot of animal screaming The 2nd phase he sees the sword and the little spark of humanity inside of him gets "remembered" and now his moveset changes from animal-like to a master of a sword. His movements have flow to them, he no longer screams like an animal, his attacks are no longer all over the place, instead they are directed with purpose and control. And how you kill him also reflects it, he either dies like an animal screaming or he dies like a human screaming but not like a beast.
I still think that the Moonlight greatsword in Bloodborne is also a great old one. Since Ludwig found it instead of it being created by the church Meaning it possibly chose him as it's champion. And before he is killed it helps him regain his humanity. And since we can only get it by killing him, it's like the sword chooses us as the new weilder
Don't know how soon they'll do that or if they ever will. Before they do that however, I would like them to release an updated version for new gen hardware and give it some sharper visuals at the same time + 60(+) fps. Maybe since Sony is open to it now, maybe even re-release it on PC.

I love the duality between Ludwig and Laurence. Lud's fight is a rotting beast hoping to hang on to its humanity for as long and as hard as it can. Meanwhile, Laurence is the polar opposite, a mindless screeching beast with not a trace of who he was left in him, just the flames of his rage, his anguish and his guilt
What a beautiful fight. A warrior lost to the madness of curuption and mutation. But in his final moments was regained his humanity and remember the man beneath moonlight.
Kinda crazy how Godfrey does the opposite of Ludwig for phase transitions, instead of staying as his regal lord title, Godfrey becomes Horah Loux who fights like a barbarian
I love how the fight starts where clearly the eye growth on his shoulder has taken over his humanity and is the driving force of the first half of the fight. The tumor that’s grown on him is the personality representing his internal fight and is in control of Ludwig. This is why the fight in the beginning is naturally just primitive and well beastly in nature. It isn’t until Ludwig’s Moonlight Greatsword reveals its self in the second phase that, this once proud man takes over his body again and triumphs over the second personality on his body. Ludwig reminds me a lot of the G-virus from Resident Evil where the eye on the shoulder is the monster and the host’s original head is fighting for control.
this boss was an absolute nightmare but for whatever reason the Undead Giant which i think is one of the last chalice dungeon bosses was even worse, that dude 1 shots you regardless, spent hours on it
Elden ring puts all these games to shame unfortunately. Lore and atmosphere wise it contends, but when it comes to build and content, there’s a clear winner. Pretty sad, dark souls 3 even doesn’t hold up
What was so emotional about this fight was that during the whole game we see this brave and powerful warriors degenerating more and more into madness and feral transformations, while in the case of Ludwig we see the most repulsive and beastly of them all having one last moment of sanity and dignity.
This fight was BRUTAL for me First phase was already a bit difficult for me, since even when I stunned him, he’d follow it up with an attack IMMEDIATELY Then the second phase comes along and I get absolutely CURB STOMPED into paste Even still, a great fight

The rollercoaster of this fight is amazing. If you pay attention throughout the game you'll constantly hear mentions of Ludwig the Hunter, a hero of the church, a legend to the people, and an inspiration to hunters like yourself. Deep down you know you'll encounter him in some pitiful and wretched form, and eventually this proves to be correct when he appears as the most deformed and abominable beast you encounter so far. Except Ludwig defies expectations and regains his humanity mid-fight to battle you as a man and not a monster, in a beautiful inversion of the game's first mandatory boss. It's criminal they have rereleased this game for more modern hardware yet.

one of the best games I ever played and my fave souls like. love the victorian aesthetic this game has.. I wish bluepoint would get their hands on this for a remaster/remake like Demon's Souls
“Fave souls like”??? It’s a SOULS GAME
@@MrSPIDEY21 it’s a fromsoft game but im not sure if it is in the same universe or shares lore with the dark souls demon’s souls game. i’m also not sure if sekiro and elden ring also counts as a Souls game. or are all games by from soft just called souls game?
@@Quiqueleal85 it’s a soulsborne game, but it’s not related too dark souls, demon souls, sekiro, or elden ring
@@Quiqueleal85 in order to be a souls game it has to have all the fundamentals that have been in every game since demon souls like the combat, world design, items, souls, leveling system, and character customization and has to be made by fromsoft. The souls games so far are demon souls, dark souls 1-3, Bloodbourne and Elden Ring.
@@canontheory u forgot sekiro
Watching a bloodthirsty beast rise up with sword in hand and fight like the ancient warfighter he was is simply terrifying and epic at the same time. And that background music only makes the fight better.
The second phase of theme, WOW!!! 💙💙💚💚💙💙💚💚
Some died as a Beast, Ludwig died as a man. Respect.
The music goes so hard on the 2nd phase
The greatest boss fromsoftware ever designed, music, scene, battle mechanics (10/10). This game is so iconic! Sont releasing a 60fps 4k patch and putting it on PC would be instant commercial success
That horse looked like it was about to monologue about holy moonlight sword😅
"Why yes I am British, how could you tell ?"
3:13 The powers of the moon in the palm of my hand 😮
The music changing to a dance waltz looks like we are giving Ludwigs last dance
3:55 this theme and soul of cinder theme are with ease the best theme upon all soul games
this boss was an absolute nightmare but for whatever reason the Undead Giant which i think is one of the last chalice dungeon bosses was even worse, that dude 1 shots you regardless, spent hours on it
undead giant is the very first chalice dungeon boss
Best mid fight cutscene in Soulsborne history for me!
Gael for me. Both are masterclass though and have huge lore implications!
I love how he's using an Arcane Ludwig's Holy Blade, as if he's preparing to get the Holy Moonlight Blade.
Really well played. The dodging and weaving was so slick. Ending the fight with a visceral attack is always the best
I like that you didn't use fire to kill him here. He doesn't die screaming like a beast; he dies roaring like a man.
The more Bloodborne I see, the more the fan theory that elden ring is a distant prequel to it seems plausible.
He's my highest rated Souls boss. If Elden Ring can top him, I will give it a perfect score.
Elden ring puts all these games to shame unfortunately. Lore and atmosphere wise it contends, but when it comes to build and content, there’s a clear winner. Pretty sad, dark souls 3 even doesn’t hold up
It did not, ER was just a dissapointment in all senses, bloodborne and Sekiro are still the best ones.
I love that these 2 replies are just complete polar opposite opinions.
You were at my side, all along...
The music 🗿🗿
What was so emotional about this fight was that during the whole game we see this brave and powerful warriors degenerating more and more into madness and feral transformations, while in the case of Ludwig we see the most repulsive and beastly of them all having one last moment of sanity and dignity.
It's probably been said a thousand times but the music change from phase 1 to phase 2 is probably the best music change From Software has done imo

"WE'RE A HUNTIN"
made me laugh
This fight was BRUTAL for me
First phase was already a bit difficult for me, since even when I stunned him, he’d follow it up with an attack IMMEDIATELY
Then the second phase comes along and I get absolutely CURB STOMPED into paste
Even still, a great fight
Nice too see Ludwig became a human after we beat him and is now a successful streamer
It's the cutscenes, lore and small details that make Ludwig s great boss
probably the best soundtrack in all souls game
We went from this to Consort Radahn.
Can't stop watching this
Hands down my favorite from software boss of all time. Ludwig took me over 20 hours to finally beat over the span of 2 days. 16 hours the first day (all failures) and 4 more hours the second day to finally beat him, such a brilliant design, amazing soundtrack, and seeing the moonlight greatsword in his hands was wild 10/10
The OST is magnificent
I don't even play bloodborne, and this is one of the coolest bosses that I've seen
It's criminal they have rereleased this game for more modern hardware yet.
i loved fighting ludwig, but i can never get far enough on a new character to fight him again. its sad but soon ill be able to feel the pleasure of fighting ludwig once more
Definitely the best version of the sword of all the souls games
