  • These artists whether called glam metal, hair bands, or your name of choice, ran under the radar at the time and stood against the changing musical climate of grunge and alternative. While they didn’t scale any big heights, they still gave us some of the best albums of the glam metal era.

    Holy SMOKES!! Wildside! My fave album of 92 by far! Heard it on College Radio, "hang on lucy", ran to the closest Musicland (remember those) and bought the CD, Still have it, (although ripped to FLAC) and it's in my "often" rotation, nobody talks about these guys, awesome!! There was another couple bands I heard on the same college radio station (during the one hour a day that a metal head dj was allowed to spin) one called 21 Guns, album was "salute" I believe, had a couple bangers on it, and the other that pops into mind was "Rhino Bucket" track was "ride with yourself" Just subbed, going down memory lane, I could talk about this stuff for hours!! Thanks!!

      Hi Eric! Oh yeah I remember Musicland too! I miss those days of having music stores all over the place. When I was a kid and my mom was going to a grocery store or pharmacy there was a good bet there was a music store close by. I’d get her to drop me off at the music story while she shopped and then she’d pick me up after. Such good memories looking through all the racks waiting to discover some new release I didn’t know had come out yet. Yes 21 Guns and Rhino Bucket are both great. I’ve both their catalogs, in fact I was listening to the 2nd 21 Guns album last night with Solli on vocals from Sons Of Angels. Remember them?

      @@BrendonSnyder What's your take on what defines glam metal? I've written something about the label "hair metal" and the styles of music a lot of these bands played and how they're labeled based on their image.
      I find the label "hair metal" is too often inaccurately applied to 80s metal and hard rock bands. You can't really use an umbrella term to describe bands who had the big hair and 80s rocker look. A lot of these bands were power metal, pure traditional heavy metal etc etc..
      For example, there was an 80s metal band called "Hawk" and they had the biggest teased hair in the fuckin 80s but their music was dark, straight heavy metal, check out their song "into the sky" for instance.
      A lot of these "hair bands" were blues oriented hard rock without pop elements. Some of them had more traditional heavy metal elements, some of them were straight pop metal, sorta watered down metal riffs with poppy choruses etc..
      Much of Def Leppard for instance was pop metal.
      The term "hair metal" is garbage and I dare people to find me a band they consider "hair metal" and I'll tell you they weren't actually "glam metal" which is a specific sub-genre, i'll probably tell you exactly what sub-genre of music they're playing.
      A band that epitomizes glam metal is early Ratt, songs like Round and round and Lay it down for instance.
      Motley Crüe "wild side", "Looks that kill" etc..

My one suggestion is adding a caption at the bottom of the screen with the band name + album title. Maybe it's my old ears, but I can't always catch it. You’re so right when stating that some of the strongest efforts of the genre was released in 92...... it really puzzles me how the MHR bands of the early 90’s could have developed if the musical climate had stayed the same. They truly peaked 🙏🏻🎸

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Who knows where it would have gone, but I would have loved to see it continue and develop. I think bands like The Black Crowes, Animal Bag, Cry Of Love, and Brother Cain were natural extensions of the glam movement stripping the sound down to simple blues rock. In the early 90’s lots of these bands stripped down their sound for the more straight ahead approach. I think this trend would have continued had grunge not exploded.

      While I never heard anything from Rockhead on the radio or MTV, Slik Toxik I well remember and loved their videos. I always thought the band would have gotten more attention if they had picked a better album title and in return had better artwork. To me the album always looked more heavy metal than what it in fact is. If I hadn’t know the singles I would have passed the album by at the time. But that’s just my take on why they didn’t do more at the time. I’m sure there were many other factors.

    Brendon very nice approach on a key year of a global change in rock music.
    The eternal arguement was that grunge killed glam&sleaze rock but check the thrash metal albums of that period (post 1991). Far more worse and away from the origins of the genre and alternative metal influenced. This was a key factor that forced thrashers either to power metal or black metal.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reality is, that it want grunge itself, but media. The media decided glam metal wasn’t cool and stop supporting it moving to something new, i.e. grunge. Honestly it could have been form of music. Once your support is pulled it’s only a matter of time.

    • @dimitriosmetalos
      @dimitriosmetalos 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrendonSnyder the Media in order to exist need a product. Product owners are the record companies. What the record industry did not count at that time was the innovation of mp3 and peer to peer. So at the end the labels lost.

    I think part of the reason a lot of these bands weren't very successful despite releasing very strong albums is that the rock press of the day were very much against them. It wasn't so much they gave them terrible reviews as it was they were very dismissive of them or even completely ignored them. I had a friend who worked at one of the labels at the time and she would laugh when I would tell her about some of the music I was listening to. I didn't care but it was indicative of how the industry viewed them.

      I wish I had the opportunity to see Rockhead. At the time I heard nothing about this band. It seems like on the east coast of the US they got zero promotion. I saw Bon Jovi on their tour in 1995 and saw a reunited Dokken open for them.

    • @marcbeil8342
      @marcbeil8342 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. Same here. Zero promotion. Well, Bon Jovi took 'em on tour but the crowd here in germany's more been about older ladies who listens to the charts like "Bed of roses" was huge here at the radio stations. Therefore not much rocker attended the Bon Jovi show, so not a good deal for Rockhead. Would have loved to have another album... George Lynch's my favourite guitarist but I could never see him with Dokken (Lynch solo and Dokken w/ John Norum).

    Bangalore Choir is excellent sounding. David Reece has a powerful terrific voice and on On Target he did a very good job . The original cover artwork is fantastic and by no means too daring. It's a Hardrock album and a beautiful woman is always good. Besides, not lavishly overwhelmed. I like it to much better than two poor guys are sitting on bananas (Deep Purple). The songwriting on that album stands for great quality and the publication is varied. The opinion about David is a bit ambiguous, but that focuses more on Accept.

    I don’t think Rockhead was ever going to be anything more than a fun diversion for Bob Rock. He was making far too much money as an in demand producer to ever give the project the kind of time or effort it would have required to make them successful enough to offset what he could have been making as a producer.
    I think the reason a lot of these bands went unnoticed at the time was due to changing tastes in music. Despite how good the albums were, I think many folks, myself included, were just getting a bit worn out on it. As such, those albums by Wildside and Roxy Blue just seemed a bit passé, and didn’t connect with me at the time. It wouldn’t be until years later, when going back and revisiting them, that I realized they were better than I remembered. I’m also surprised Southgang’s second album didn’t get at least an honorable mention.
    Did you do one of these for 1991 yet? I know a few I would include in my Top 5 for that year. I may not call them Glam Metal, but they certainly bordered on that territory.
