      I'll admit it. It was for myself as recently as just a few weeks ago when Glenn metal served as a bridge between album-oriented rock that I've been listen to almost exclusively for months and metal. And this time I actually have ended up enjoying metal and sticking with it as opposed to the other eight or ten times I've tried.

      Jim Bowen Why do you think the word glamorous was used to describe these talentless bands? Most were hard rock and because of the big teased hair and girlish mannerisms. A few good singers out of maybe 30 bands and really no instrumental talent to speak of made for a quick departure for the genre and I'm glad. Some of their songs went top 40 pop, so you know that's touching bottom in true nature of metal talent.

    People hear Skid Row's first album, "Skid Row", and immediately label them as glam. But the two albums following, "Slave to the Grind" and "Subhuman Race", were way heavier and way more diverse. 'Glam Metal' is not a music genre. Neither are 'Hair Metal' or even 'Pop Metal'. These are just brands, attached to almost every 80's band with loud guitars and long haired dudes.
    Come to think of it: after all , the only thing these bands had in common was the 80's style production (reverby drums, cheesy backing vocals and lots of guitar overdubs).
    For the rest, each band did their own thing:
    - Mr Big was just 70's Hard Rock with 80's production.
    - Bon Jovi, Europe, Def Leppard: Melodic Rock/AOR (same as Boston, Journey or Foreigner) + the 80's slick production.
    - Mötley Crue, Ratt, Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot: Traditional Heavy Metal/Hard Rock + some catchy hooks + the 80's slick production.
    - Cinderella: AC/DC + the 80's slick production.
    - Poison: Cheap Trick inspired Power Pop + the 80's slick production.
    Even within these terms, many bands would constantly fluctuate in their style:
    Europe started playing Power Metal at the early 80's, then moved towards AOR and finished playing kickass Hard Rock ('Prisoners in Paradise').
    A band like Winger was basically AOR with a touch of Prog.
    You see, there was much more originality in the 80's scene than you would think.
    Only if we strip down the fake 'Glam/Pop/Hair Metal' labels, this stigmatisation of the great bands of the eighties will stop.

    • @Kongorlobo
      @Kongorlobo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There is so much misunderstanding of what Glam Metal is and what it is not. People who compare Dokken, W.A.S.P., etc, to Cinderella and Poison, and think they sound the same, and to some extent play the same, and proceed to label them under a genre which lumps them together doesn't know what they are talking about. This is why people are confused whether Dokken, W.A.S.P., etc, are a hard rock band or traditional heavy metal or both while avoid the Glam Metal label (websites like Metallum for example) have every right to do so because the metal media does a horrible job in accurately informing people about the genre. Early 80's metal bands like Dokken, W.A.S.P., Loudness, T.N.T., etc, are Glam Metal because the are most likely influenced by early 80's metal like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Motorhead, etc, and are big time influenced by proto metal bands like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple along with Glam Rock while bands like Poison, Warrant, Cinderella, etc, where influenced by early 80's Glam Metal but stripped away any Metal sound in their music which doesn't even qualify them to be considered Metal. All they have is Glam looks.
    To break it down:
    First wave of Glam Metal (early to mid 80's): Dokken, W.A.S.P., early Motley Crue, M.A.R.S., Racer X, Nitro, Icon, Loudness, etc
    Second wave of Glam "Metal" (mid to late 80's): Guns n' Roses, Cinderella, Poison, Warrant, Firehouse, etc

      Andrasté Reminiec Cinderella we're influenced more by early glam metal bands but doesn't but doesn't have the metallic sound like their early contemporaries. That's why I wouldn't consider them metal at all. Bands like Dokken, W.A.S.P., M.A.R.S., Fifth Angel, London Etc, on the other hand are glam metal acts with influences derived from N.W.O.B.H.M., 70's rock / metal, glam rock, punk, etc. The bands have more of a metallic sound, sometimes plays fast heavy and powerful metal, coupled with glam image.

    • @felipe126929666
      @felipe126929666 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glam metal originated with Motley Crue (thanks to the influences of glam rock acts like the New York Dolls, shock rock acts like Alice Cooper, Kiss, etc., N.W.O.B.H.M. bands like Tygers of Pan Tang - I think Vince Neil openly states it in a documentary somewhere in TH-cam, visaul influences of Judas Priest and Hanois Rock and influences of punk music like Sex Pistols), with the help of bands like Van Halen who pretty much help kick start things in LA. With the combination of heavy metal, punk and Glam and metal images Motley Crue were, in some essence, responsible for early Glam Heavy Metal bands. I would say that Britney Fox and Cinderella does not sound metal compare to bands like Ratt, Dokken, W.A.S.P., early Pantera, etc, but certainly has the Glam image down which suggests that they lean towards later commercialized so called Glam "Metal".
      I would say early Europe where just another F.V.A.S.H.M. (Första Vågen Av Svnsk Heavy Metal or in English,The First Wave of Swedish Heavy Metal which were an era of early 80's Swedish Metal bands influences from N.W.O.B.H.M. You should check' em out they have some pretty awesome bands like Heavy Load and Gotham City). They were the Def Leppard of that era as Europe would soon adopt Glam and A.O.R. sounds which could be heard in The Final Countdown. As for Dokken, they were a band pioneering the First Wave of Glam Metal or early Glam Metal with their L.A. rivals Ratt and Motley Crue in the early 80's

    I think Cinderella started as kind of a glam band, but evolved (no pun intended) into more of an Aeromsith-type blues rock band post-Long Cold Winter. Their last two albums (Heartbreak Station and Still Climbing) are straight blues rock records. I would say the same for Whitesnake. They started in 78 and were more blues rock. As for the newer bands, Crazy Lixx is like the new school, Swedish Def Leppard. Santa Cruz and Crashdiet very much have that Skid Row/GN'R type grit to them.

    You should have had sub genre of sleaze metal - examples include in the 80’s -Faster Pussycat, Junkyard, Dogs D’amour, Guns and Roses, Rock City Angels, Hanoi Rocks, Smashed Gladys, LA Guns, Skid Row ! etc this was a real sub genre in the 80’s and quite distinct from Glam Metal in a lot of ways wasn’t so much glammed up but low down and gritty might of paved the way for some grunge in at least the image so I think a quite legitimate genre and had its own sound.This would have sorted some of your discrepancies.

    Regarding GnR: they were an integral part of the LA Sunset Strip glam metal scene, alongside a number of the other bands you discuss. Hair/glam metal is a much broader category than some people give it credit for, with many things that unite the bands (musically, visually, socially, geographically, economically, etc.) but just as many that set them apart from one another. Under the "metal" banner you can find corpse-painted black metallers, abrasive death metal groups, poppy Euro symphonic metal bands fronted by twittering, operatic divas... Glam metal shares that kind of diversity of look and sound.

  • @steveverboom
    @steveverboom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the reason it's so hard to nail down bands into glam is that it's more of a look than a sound. Glam is short for glamerous. That's New York Dolls, Hanoi Rocks, and Poison. The bands on your list are really Hard Rock and if they need to be narrowed down, they can be 80's Hard Rock. The newer bands are simply inspired by them, just like some bands sound like 70's bands. Some bands briefly adopted the look like Motley Crue (Theater of Pain) and Ozzy (Ultimate Sin). I don't consider leather and studs glam since you would have to include bands like Judas Priest then. Also, I'm a big fan of these bands along with Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Anthrax that all made their best albums in the 80's. These days, it's hard to even refer to these bands as Heavy Metal since the term is now being used for even heavier bands like Lamb of God and Sepultura that don't have clear vocals. Hard Rock works for me.

    I think there were 3 stages in the 80s. Glam, Hair, and Sleaze.
    It is hard to pinpoint exactly. As some bands were mixing sounds.
    Some bands had huge blues influence, others punk and NWOBHM influences.
    There is something I need to say first. Glam gets a lot of hate these days but imagine living in the very conservative 70s and early 80s. A lot of long-haired people were being bullied for having long hair and probably even today Metalheads hear they look like women. So I think looking like a woman literally was very rebellious, in your face in the 70s and then the 80s. It pissed a lot of Rednecks and conservatives off, and metalheads today look at it with no context.
    Glam is the early stuff like Van Halen, Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Dokken, and Ratt. 78 - 83.
    Hair Metal is the Bon Jovi, Warrant, Poison, Europe, Winger(they had the sound but not the look, The look was the late 80s),and Cinderella in 84-87. At this point a lot of bands were going with softer voices, adding synths, and generally adding POP style into songwriting and sound. They were trying to capture the bigger AOR crowd.
    But then Motley Crue had the look but not the sound, except 2 or 3 ballads.
    At the time of hair metal, I suspect labels were just throwing money left and right to get the next big hair band.
    Even Celtic Frost and Judas priest were hair metal for a little bit. Iron Maiden was a little in that direction as well. Ozzy Osbourne went full hair.
    A lot of NWOBHM went Glam at the time actually, and if some bands did not adopt the look, had the sound in some of the songs. Warrant was a thrash metal band that released 2 albums and when Hair metal as they lived for 5 dollars per week.
    Then a lot of bands made some money from the labels but I suspect for money bands, the Hair albums backfired. So the next stage was a natural transition.
    GnR and Skid Row started Sleaze Metal, which still had the sound, but more blues/rock n roll vibe, and was toning down on the hair, and less pop sound. 87-92.
    This label is also for all the GnR wannabees in the late 80s/early 90s. Some bands still had the Hair Image and the sleaze sound or the sleaze Image and the hair sound. It is hard to put deterministic borders.
    The above is based on research I did in the 2000s :)

    Ozzy was actually one of the early initiators of glam metal when he began adding heavier and glittery makeup to his look, but of course his lyrical themes and style were hardly 'glam.'
    This music's a guilty pleasure of mine and can be a lot of fun and energetic. Steel Panther shows are some of the funnest. Pantera's Power Metal may be one of my favorite album's by them.

    Yes Jon Bongovi of Bon Jovi was married to the same woman throughout his career however so was Dee Snider of Twisted Sister. But yes the early Bon Jovi releases were metal, but they ended up following a Springsteen like sound later on (IMO). Also glad you mentioned Tigertailz (RIP Pepsi). Mötley Crüe tended to reinvent themselves each release.

    I love glam metal as much as any other metal genre. To me it's more rebellious to dress like a chick than just wear black or denim and leather. So realistically I think it takes more courage to go the eyeliner/spandex route as opposed to the t-shirt /jeans route. So in that respect I consider the glam bands more ballsy than bands like Metallica and Megadeth which just looked like generic rockers. While in my opinion bands like Bon Jovi and Great White had no business calling themselves metal given they were so commerical, Motley Crue, WASP, Poison, Ratt and Warrant had plenty of material to be considered metal. I'd refer a skeptic to songs like "Live Wire", "Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)", "Look What the Cat Dragged In", "You Think You're Tough" and "Uncle Tom's Cabin". Kix for example I think doesn't get the credit they deserve. They to me are like an American AC/DC.

    There needs to be a show dedicated to alternative metal, both for defining what it is and how it contributes to metal history post-80's. The awkward labeling of hard alternative is used by literally no one, and I think personally it encapsulates a lot more bands than what he has listed. For origins, Faith No More, Rage, and Primus are gods. Given how limiting a subgenre nu metal is (or was since nu metal is pretty much dead), I would combine all those nu metal bands with the hard alternative bands. For the new genre, include Incubus, Helmet, Chevelle, 10 Years, Alter Bridge, Breaking Benjamin, Drowning Pool, Filter, Lacuna Coil, Mudvayne, Stone Sour, and Sevendust. And get rid of Chili Peppers and Smashing Pumpkins. Tool should go here, but you got them in prog and I'm cool with that, so definitely A Perfect Circle should go here. You should get Chino from Deftones to co-host!

    • @PorscheJon
      @PorscheJon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alex Esau Totally agree. Nu Metal is kind of a blur in what it actually is. People have said that rap metal and nu metal are different genres. There is also nu metal bands that don't even rap at all. Wtf is nu metal? I think the term "Alternative Metal" would umbrella all the bands you mentioned plus the nu metal and rap metal variety. If they could get chino to talk on an alternative metal episode, that would be crazy.

    For me, the only reason this scene is about a look are the labels people choose to use for the scene; glam, hair, etc, as well as what the record companies forced on many of these bands to fit in. For me, it's hook laden songs with heavy guitars and great solos. Of course, as a guitar player, I tend to fixate on that part lol. As a result, I also tend to like the bands that have more of an edge unless the guitar playing truly overwhelms.

      Watch some of their videos and tell me they're not in this genre. Maiden and Priest both conformed to this genre in the mid-late 80s as well. Once again, the problem here is the title of the genre. Glam (or hair) are terms largely used for the genre in a derogatory manner, and as a result are poor choices IMO. Maybe it should just be called 80's Hard Rock.
