    I love how when Capaldi became the Doctor, they actually called back to this episode. The Doctor unknowingly adopted Caicillius's likeness as a reminder that The Doctor saves people, just as he saved Caicillius back then. Nice little way of filling in that plot hole.

      Very underrated episode. Also set up the plot point with Maisie Williams character which is one of my favourites purely for its potential despite how disappointing it turned out (much like the Doctor’s Daughter).

    I watched in an interview that the first thing he did when he met David on set was asking him where the TARDIS was. He was born to be the Doctor for sure.

      @@MRJMXHD Not sure what your point is, Capaldi watched Hartnells version when it originally aired. He wrote to the fan clubs president as child so often, occasionally demanding to be put in charge, that they wished the Daleks would exterminate him.
      He is quite possibly the biggest Doctor Who fan on the planet, being put in the title role was literally a dream for him.

      After Eccleston, Tennant and Smith (each one younger than the one before him), Peter thought that the producers had decided that the Doctor was to be played by younger actors going forward. Peter assumed that he was just too old to play him anymore. Luckily, he was wrong!! 😁😁

      That would make the children part timelord and the doctor would be able to sense that. Unless he used the fob watch, which while it would change the doctor's DNA, it would also make the Donna bit moot. Although, this would explain a lot regarding his unknowing behaviour.
      Kind of be a bootstrap paradox too, he chose the face to remind him of those to save but had to become the man who needed saving, adding too the immortality, meaning tragically and knowingly to enter such a relationship despite the eventual loss of his wife/children.

    I love the references to Roman culture. They aren't all accurate but a lot of it is, and it's amazing how casual and real they make the Romans instead of being all "BEHOLD, THE EMPEROR".

      @@memi3680 From how I saw it explained (so second hand (so don’t quote me (I don’t even watch Torchwood))), the character Peter Capaldi played in Torchwood was a descendant of Capaldi’s character here. Apparently the character in Torchwood died to show time making amends/catching up and end that family’s line, after the Doctor saved them and altered their history.

In one of the comics, One of the original set of children sacrificed to the 456 by Jack was a rogue time agent who made a botched escape attempt away from the 11th doctor with the botched part being a physical regression into a child.

    It's amazing, from 0:45 to 0:55, that *is* 12. The characterisations are all there, the excitement, the thing about asking someone to get something then always adding something else, ending it with "there's a good man"

    I love how normal they make the Romans feel in this episode. Like these are just regular people living their lives who happened to live in the Roman Empire. It’s probably not entirely accurate but I love that it makes their culture seem not so strange.

    This video is Modern Art. Seeing Peter Capaldi and David Tennant in one episode with Donna Noble aka Catherine Tate, was one of the best episodes of Doctor Who I have ever watched. Loved Fires Of Pompeii and it is still one of my favourite Doctor Who Episodes of All time.

    At the time when this episode aired I bet Peter Capaldi would think he wouldn’t get to be The Doctor as Matt Smith had been cast as the next one but when Matt Smith said he was leaving I said Peter Capaldi would be The Doctor when it was announced I was happy he was the doctor I was the only one who predicted right for his Doctor I wanted to see The Master, Daleks, Sontarans, Zigons, and Cybermen

    I watched Doctor Who at backwards(Capaldi first, then Smith and so on), I can't forget how shocked I am when I saw Capaldi here, I wouldn't be this shock if I watched it right way around cause I'll just forgot him as a random character.

      It's a shame that they couldn't give 12 better episodes. I feel like they kind of screwed Capaldi over a little because of the scripts he had to work with.

    I just rewatched that episode a couple days ago. I really can't get enough of Doctor Who.
    This is my 4th rewatch of the reboot series.
    I only wish I could rewatch the classic series as well. I'll have to renew my BritBox subscription.

    A thing about regeneration that was not tackled again after it was introduced was that Time Lords and Ladies can actually have a conscious choice over their appearance. Romana did it when she took Princess Astra's appearance.
