    Own this for the past 7 years in Asia , albeit with the ubiquitous 1.0 Ecoboost petrol engine. This car is an absolute fun on a budget. The smile and joy this thing brought to my face is the same as the first day I drive it out of the showroom. And that’s the reason I love it so much.

    A solid motor, often that era of Fiesta was in the top ten best selling in the UK, before everyone went on to premium brands, SUVs and stick it all on PCP. Another well detailed and good review Mr Lloyd although not fitted with the most powerful engine it seems that the 1.25 is the best for reliability out of the bunch.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes sir! The good old 1.25 Sigma/Zetec-SE/Duratec is known for being reliable as long as you keep up with the cambelt changes and routine servicing. The Fiesta is in the Number Two position at the moment, and last year was in the Number One position, so not everyone has gone premium German SUV crazy yet, but I hear that the future of the next generation of Fiesta is actually in doubt due to the reasons you mention, which is absolutely crazy!

    Hello Joseph , I have one , a 3Door 12.5 zetec 63 plates in thunder grey . I've had it for over 4 years now and I'm very happy with it. I was put off the dash for many years as I thought it was too busy at the time I had a 07 Polo so they are more standard . Its the best car I've owned and would recommend them. I do love the front rear heated window on frosty and misty days. I also live in Cheshire .

    This is one car that you can label a “Common sense car”
    It’s a no nonsense, practical, good looking little hatchback that as you said delivers in spades.
    I use to drive a 2013 van version powered by that forbidden fuel and it drove really well, and was comfortable, what more can I say.
    For me though I’d have to go for the ST version to keep me awake.
    Great review again Mr Lloyd.

    A fine review Sir! The colour of the car looks like it's the same as my Focus which is Deep Impact Blue. That's one of the reasons why I have always stuck with Fords is because of the way they drive. The MK VII is certainly a bit different to the MKII in which I learned to drive in.

    @FuelPower 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great Review Joseph! I do like this generation of Fiesta as it was the car my instructor had when I was learning to drive. It drove very nicely and was predictable. The dash has unfortunately aged like a fine milk with the excessive amount of buttons though the rest of the car makes up for it.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Mr Bill! My lady wife also learned to drive in one of these. The controls are very easy indeed, and it is simple to drive it smoothly. The pre-facelift dashboard is particularly dated, but if you compare it with an MG3, it does look a bit better. The number of buttons is typical of when the car came out.

  • @jcarter3562
    @jcarter3562 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent review of an excellent car. I can only comment from personal experience but my 8 year old 1 litre ecoboost powershift 2014 Fiesta has been faultless. It is a superb combination of engine/gearbox. I think its all down to treating the car with respect and having it serviced regularly on time.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that it's one of those things. A friend of mine had his Powershift gearbox fail recently, and I know of many Ecoboost engines which have failed (one was on the Chops Garage channel, for example), but equally, many have been fine. In the same way, a supposedly ultra reliable five year old Kia Rio that I sourced last year for a client had a fuel pump failure a couple of months ago at less than 30,000 miles. Never heard of that happening before. Cars are strange like that.

      Yes, they are absolutely everywhere, aren't they? They don't quite rust like a Mark II, but are a bit more complicated, so I think they will start to get scrapped in large numbers as their values decrease, just like all the other generations of Fiesta.

  • @alextoft9199
    @alextoft9199 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lovely cars. We have one at work and I drove it recently. Considering I had a 1999 Fiesta as a first car with the same Zetec engine it was like coming home. I'm so impressed. Just got in it and didn't have to think about getting used to it. The best part for me is that while I'm really comfortable and the ride is lovely, I'm also loving the precise steering and enjoying chucking it about. I like the 1.25. It's a characterful revy unit and it sounds great. I like the whine in 1st and 2nd gives it character. Would love to try a 1.0 Ecoboast though. I dare say I have driven one with the 1.6 diesel. I think that was even better because it really suited the car. Didn't take away any of the fun but gave it a heavinsss and very mature feel. Felt like it could really do the high miles with no bother. One criticism is the gearbox. It is very easy to use but hard to be smooth because of how revy the Zetec is. Found the same with my 1999 version

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 1.0 Ecoboom engines have a dreadful reliability record, sadly, particularly the ones made before 2013. I don't recommend them to clients, but I do recommend the 1.25 and 1.4 Zetec-SE engines an awful lot. As you say, very few downsides in the way that it drives, they really did well in this respect. Sadly, comments such as intimating that the forbidden fuel versions of this car are better tend to get frowned upon on this channel, I am afraid....

  • @levelcrossing150

    A great video and I have one of these. I was attracted to it by it's great front looks, sleek shaped headlights lights, beautiful slippery looks and quirky dash design. I wanted the 1.25 too as I have always believed the old saying that you can't substitute for cubic capacity. When I bought mine the first thing I did was to sling the puncture repair kit and buy myself a spare wheel, jack and wheel brace. The thing that surprised me is that it is more or less as big as my Mk2 Escort. So far it's been a great car for me.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the size of this is much, much bigger than a Mark II Fiesta, for example. I don't blame you for throwing that tyre repair kit away. Yes, the facelifted Mark VII is a handsome car, isn't it? I think that the 1.25 is perfectly adequate for what most people need.

    • @levelcrossing150

      @@lloydvehicleconsulting Yes I agree as it suits me well, it's fun to drive and holds the road superbly. I did have reservations over choosing a smaller car than the Mondeo it was replacing but I actually fell in love with it straight from the start, the front seemed to remind me of a classic racing car. There is the odd large cupboard I can't carry anymore but it's a small price to pay for such a great little car.

    Thanks for suggesting viewing this video, it's been interesting and very informative. This example is a pretty looking car and the colour suits it well. The glovebox is a peculiar shape and the reverse gear is weak, even from 1,400 miles. I just love the front of these, the lovely design of the sweeping back front headlights and the sporty grill. I ditched the pot of glue to fix any puctures and bought a pathetic but as new space-saver wheel, jack and brace. Would you believe it's the same size as my Mk2 Escort. Many thanks. What a nice eminently sensible car. I too have heard that the Ford 1.0 Ecoboost engine may not be the last word in reliability. Nevertheless, having driven one extensively 18 months ago (in a hired new shape Focus) I must say I was genuinely impressed with both its performance and character. Indeed, putting aside any long term questions regarding their longevity I don't really know why anyone would opt for a bigger engine in a Fiesta or Focus because that little three cylinder was doing a very passible impression of a 2.0 litre on a mission. A little turbo charged gem.
    But there again we all know that hire cars are always the fastest thing on the road!

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that Fiesta I drove in the South of France was fast enough! The Ecoboom engine is the main reliability question with these, most other issues are relatively minor, it would seem.
      Absolutely correct, it has a fun character to it, being both pleasant and involving to drive. Glad you enjoyed the video and appreciated us being sensible again in the secondhand car market!

  • @seancooke4127
    @seancooke4127 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you find it hard to criticise and the 1.4 was good on the Autoroute then I would certainly consider a Fiesta Mk7. It is a shame that the Ecoboost proved unreliable. Though for a 1 litre turbo to replace a strong reliable 1.6 in a Focus seemed to be a bit challenging. Obviously, emissions related I feel.
    Anyway excellent, thoroughly enjoyed it.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I think the rationale behind the Ecoboost and the Volkswagen 1.0 TSi would have been emissions regulations. The 1.4 was more than adequate on the autoroute, and this 1.25 wasn't bad at all. You can always avoid the 1.0 engine if you like, there are plenty of other choices. Glad you enjoyed it, sir!

    I've got a 2014 Fiesta myself. It's the Titanium trim but I'm struggling to think what it has that the Zetec hasn't, apart from a nice Sony stereo which makes the dash look a bit less dated.
    Mine has the 1.0 ecoboost engine. I hadn't heard about reliability issues when I bought it in early 2020. So far so good on that front, albeit, due to Covid, I've only added 4k miles taking it up to 78k. Not looking forward to getting the timing belt changed. Supposedly, that's north of £1,200 at a dealership.
    It drives beautifully though, with plenty of torque at low revs. For a cheap used car it's quite an engaging drive and as you said, surprisingly refined.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh gosh, the timing belt! I think it is a bit complicated on an Ecoboost engine, although an independent garage would be a bit cheaper. I have driven a 125 bhp version of it in a Ford Focus Mark III hire car, and it seemed fast enough.
      You are right, it has much nicer driving dynamics than a car of this size and price has a right to exhibit, and the refinement is excellent.

    The 1.25 is underpowered for the heavy fiesta, it was OK in the mk5 but the later ones are heavier. Other than that they are surprisingly good cars. We had one that kept blowing the heater resistors, very annoying. Also both rear springs snapped, weird.

      I didn't find this underpowered compared with the Skoda Fabia 1.0 MPi that I drove the next day, actually. There are a lot of more powerful engines available, but this seemed about right. I have driven a 1.25 Mark V, and that was very nippy indeed! The 60 bhp version would have been very difficult to recommend, though.
