This is the best play breakdown that I have seen. I also like the pace that you go through each point without talking the point to death. Pickleball strategy videos are hard to find. Very well done. I'm tagging this and will watch it every so often as a refresher.
I'm 1 min in and already loving it. The perfect example of when to split step. I see my partners constantly getting beat by this shot and I'm not perfect but these rarely get by me. I always wondered why and it's because I'm stopping soon enough to react Edit: so many great leasons in this video!!
Finally. Someone understands when to stop and split step. When you or your partners ball crosses the net, you split step and stop and prepare for the ball coming back. You will be so much more balanced and able to hit a ball well as your improved court awareness. Great job of explaining when to stop. Well done.

33:20 I'm really happy you emphasized this. Too much coaching says always get to front no matter what. Last week I was being "coached"(in the annoying way) by a player at my same(or lower) skill tell me I should never be in the middle but I explained to him that I was transitioning based on our hits and the opponent's position. Other side was up front and getting high balls to drive, I stayed middle/back to give myself a chance to defend, he stayed up and got destroyed. There are SO many high-level tips in here that any 4.0 needs to know to get to 4.5 and above, I loved it

This is a "save" to re-watch video. One of the best, most thorough breakdown vids I've seen. You hit on 3 critical skills I need to get better at to move to 4.0. The reset, the split step and smarter, ball movement (around) when dinking. The interspersed commentary on shot selection & situational positioning was also super helpful. Hopefully this vid gets watched by tons of 3.0 to 3.5+ players. Breakdown of high level play really illustrates why pickleball is so addictive to many of us. Thx so much

Hey! I signed up for a pb league a month ago, having not played since high school literally 20 years ago. I've been practicing for the past month 4-5 times a week 1.5hrs+ with lots of drilling from your videos and shorts. My partner and I played round 2 of our 3.0 league last night going undefeated both weeks (10-0) in games! Thanks for all the videos. Keep up the great work. We already think we should have joined the 4.0 league!

That was absolutely fantastic. I REALLY like that you showed us the rally, stopped at critical moments and then went back in slo mo. Your point breakdown was also so helpful. I've only watched your "60 seconds of less" shorts and many of the regular shot videos. This was the first game breakdown and I just loved it. Also, appreciate your honest approach when you made mistakes in judgment. I saw you play singles in Newport recently and notice how athletic you are. I definitely got a lot from this video, and I very much enjoy your point-by-point analyses! I'm an "advanced beginner" with a whole lot more strategy in my head than ability to execute in play, but I try to work on one thing at a time. So much food for thought here!

Great analysis. It's always nice to see breakdowns of higher level play. One thing that didn't work well was whenever you said "I need to move over here..." etc while pointing to yourself in the room since you are facing opposite the viewer.

This was great! Getting good video is pretty hard but just about any video is better than none, so that video quality is more than fine and easy to learn from. Also, for reviewing video on TH-cam, I recommend using keyboard left and right arrows to go forward and back in the video. The default is 15 second jumps, but you can change that to 5 seconds. You can also quickly go to 2x speed by holding the spacebar.
This video is the best training video I have ever seen. Would love more of them. Also great to see you using the paddle positions you teach in a real match.
Thanks for this content Tanner. I am still quite new to the sport (around 5 months). l I am relatively competent and all the type of shots, but I still have loads to learn on the tactical side, I learned so much from this video alone!
I'm 3.7ish and this was really helpful to me. Also crazy seeing him confirm a few intuitive gameplay choices I've been making, but I also saw many things I had learned from other youtubers, like when to reset straight instead of continuing to cross dink.
Hey Tanner nice vid as always, just some feedback - I don't know if you edited the video that you're reviewing but the end clip points seem to cut off very quickly after the point is scored. In your review you're often having to rewind back and it's a bit disorientating. I'd suggest a bit more breathing room after the point is scored in the base edit. Also maybe running the playback at slightly slower at .75 could be easier to follow and explain for viewers. I did notice you did that at the start but then turned it off. keep up the good work :)

Yes, the transition is the land of opportunity! I have been following your advice and split stepping earlier than before; it has helped me see the bigger picture with my ability to place the ball against my opponents.
What helped me calming my feet in transition (earlier split stepping both up and back) is learning to point my paddle tip at the floor to anticipate making a dig. Having enough leg separation also helps fielding the ball just in front of my toes.
Great video - got to watch this match in person and was picking up on some things from just watching a higher level of play. Great insight on the video identifying different patterns and things to look for!
This was great Tanner, nice work! I've been starting to score Erne's off my out of the air dinks now. I'm righty and pulled off a backhand redirect dink to their backhand and did a really clean backhand Erne on right side. What made it work is the out of air lack of time for the other side.

Excellent job Tanner, all the points you broke down had such variety! I totally agree with the chess part of the match-it works. Being aware of your repetitive tendencies allows you to fake the next same shot by deceiving your opponents with body language.
Hey bro great breakdown. To add to your end comment about moving to the line to quickly, never be in a hurry to loose the point. Meaning, you don’t have to always get to the kitchen as quickly as possible. Especially if you’re trying to take a ball while your feet are still moving. Like you said the whole video, once the ball bounces on your opponents side, stop and split step.

1. I'm not sure viewers appreciate all the time and attention you spend editing out the between points chunks. (I used to coach tennis and I'd be up in the wee hours editing.) Good work, Tanner! 2. Your breakdown vids are excellent. Keep 'em coming, please. 3. I gotta "check my ego" to move up a level. (I have this, "Yeah, but I have better hands than my contemporaries so I can get away with split-stepping later" tape in my head. I need to BURN that tape!) Your videos surely shine a bright light on the areas I need to improve. 4. When I was coaching, I regularly encouraged my players to play the percentage shots; not to go for the glory shots. Your breakdowns make me realize I need to apply my own advice.
DANG YOU'RE GOOD Tanner!! I understand what you said in another vid to answer a banger with a banger shot. These guys can hit hard a lot, but I wouldn't call them bangers because they have a good soft game.
Thanks for the comments on when to split step. I play twice a week with various skill levels, and this commentary provides me with techniques to improve my skills. I've been wondering how to play with a partner who is a lefty on the court. I'm a righty, and this video gave me a good idea.

Wow - I learned a lot from this one. That's really interesting about split-stepping when you need to (when they're about to hit it), even if you're not at the kitchen line yet. And I'm so hungry to try that play where you do a cross-dink pattern and then dink down the line to set up an Erne. Some of your flicks from below the net look like they take immense wrist power; I'm afraid to shred my arm if I try it. But one thing I'll definitely try is letting some of their speed-ups go out early in the match, to send a signal early on.

Hey bro great breakdown. To add to your end comment about moving to the line to quickly, never be in a hurry to loose the point. Meaning, you don’t have to always get to the kitchen as quickly as possible. Especially if you’re trying to take a ball while your feet are still moving. Like you said the whole video, once the ball bounces on your opponents side, stop and split step.

3. I gotta "check my ego" to move up a level. (I have this, "Yeah, but I have better hands than my contemporaries so I can get away with split-stepping later" tape in my head. I need to BURN that tape!) Your videos surely shine a bright light on the areas I need to improve.
4. When I was coaching, I regularly encouraged my players to play the percentage shots; not to go for the glory shots. Your breakdowns make me realize I need to apply my own advice.

DANG YOU'RE GOOD Tanner!! I understand what you said in another vid to answer a banger with a banger shot. These guys can hit hard a lot, but I wouldn't call them bangers because they have a good soft game.

Thanks for the comments on when to split step. I play twice a week with various skill levels, and this commentary provides me with techniques to improve my skills. I've been wondering how to play with a partner who is a lefty on the court. I'm a righty, and this video gave me a good idea.

Wow - I learned a lot from this one. That's really interesting about split-stepping when you need to (when they're about to hit it), even if you're not at the kitchen line yet. And I'm so hungry to try that play where you do a cross-dink pattern and then dink down the line to set up an Erne. Some of your flicks from below the net look like they take immense wrist power; I'm afraid to shred my arm if I try it. But one thing I'll definitely try is letting some of their speed-ups go out early in the match, to send a signal early on.
