I was officially invited by Triumph to Spain to ride and review both this Scrambler 400x and the Speed 400 in the beautiful mountain roads near Valencia in Spain. The weather was glorious and the bikes were fantastic!
In this review I go into why I like this model, and I go into detail on the looks, styling, practicality, handling, speed, power, performance, brakes, exhaust note and more...
I test-rode the Scrambler 400X on and off road, with some light off roading down a beautiful sandy gravel track, to evaluate it's prowess in all conditions.

I was waiting for your guys' review of this one. Thank you. Order placed
Our pleasure!
Wow!!! Very brilliant!! Everybody’s making affordable , quality, superb motorbikes.😊😊👍✌️
I'm the proud owner of the first one to arrive here on Tenerife! It was made for these roads and I'm grinning ear to ear on it! I also like the styling and the gold anodised forks, after all it is a "MODERN CLASSIC! My first Triumh was a 3TA followed by a ex police T100P in Ireland 40+ years ago and this is my return to biking after a 20 year gap with just a few spins on borrowed machines. I'm looking forward to having a lot of great runs on this one. Love your channel guys, 95% of what you say I agree with but I do think the styling has to move ahead. Keep up the good work.
Awesome enjoy your new ride 😉
Lap it up!
I own one in India. Test rode it a fell in love. Didn't ride the speed at all. This was just perfect for me. Clocked about 1000 kms on Himalayan roads with and ear to ear grin.
Great to hear 👍🏼👍🏼
I’m stuck between RE METEOR vs Scrambler 400
@@PiyushPatel10 No reason to get stuck between the two. You need to decide what type of a bike you want....cruiser vs a scrambler. Test ride both and see what connects with you. Bike geometry and riding style is more important than many of us in India acknowledge.
@@thekushinator
I've been an active driver for the past 10 years, primarily using a car and scooter.activa and occasionally a Splendor bike.
I'm currently confused between the
RE Meteor/bullet & Triumph scrambler 400
I test rode seven motorcycles: Honda Highness, CB 350, Royal En-field Classic, Bullet, and Meteor and both triumphs
After the rides, I've narrowed down to three: 1) RE Bullet, 2) RE Meteor, and 3) Triumph Scrambler 400. The Honda, especially CB 350, lost appeal due to an annoying sound and gear
Among RE models, Meteor stood out for comfort. Initially leaning towards the Classic, the Bullet seemed more appealing after tests, possibly due to the seat and handlebar. Strangely, the Classic caused lower spine discomfort, maybe due to a softer seat.
Planning six or more years of ownership, I'll conduct more extensive test rides with pillion , covering 8+ km for Meteor, Bullet, and Triumph Scrambler.. In the city, any of these seems suitable. But it is almost like my first bike and my priorities are not set, who knows if i buy meteor i go for cruising, or srambler then country roads.
@@PiyushPatel10 Meteor rider here in Thailand. Love it to bits... I'm waiting for the Scram 450 (RE) to arrive.... I'm a shameless RE fanboy
Won't own any other brand 😂
*Crap Game* 🎉
I had a test ride of this. Man oh man, I couldn't get off from it. It's so good. It has comfort of Himalayan seat, smoothness of honda cb350, power of a duke 390 and pleasure like an interceptor. Gears are tall, no knocking, maneuvers like a Messi on field, pulls harder than a machine gun trigger and feels like a dragon you're flying on that's completely in your control. It's so good!
I normally prefer black forks but on the matte green bike I think the gold look good. This is definitely a bike I am interested in, Triumph have got this one right.
I bought one. Have over 800 miles on it and love it. It is the perfect companion to my Tiger 800. I sold my DR650 and do not miss it. This bike is more responsive, more managable and confidence inspiring. The power opened up after the 600 mile reprogram.
Man the footage you all have and your channels presentation is just above all the rest. Definitely my favorite bike channel. The 400 seems like probably the best bike value in motorcycling right now.
Thank you, much appreciated 👍🏼
@MrDarcy-OlMan oh yeah I think the gold forks look good at least with that semigloss green color. I think grey or black would look good too. The sound is great based on the video for that single. I want one lol.
The green and brown is spot on!
Incredible review, man! Thank you for letting the sound of the engine be heard without any music or speaking! Your reviews are getting better and better. Well done!
Much appreciated! We always make sure to capture the engine sound 😁
Proud owner of the scram, love from Goa 😊
I like how he ended the video with a drive POV !! Love the sound of the scrambler as well !!
Thank you Darcy for this very informative and entertaining review. 👍
Young Mr. Darcy an excellent review, with the best 'on board' footage that I've seen so far.
I test rode the scrambler 400 x at my local dealer a couple of weeks ago, i loved it! Great bike for the money, never knew 400cc could be so fun! I'd like one as a second bike to use for trips into town or a winter hack
Great to hear!
Great review and a really desirable looking bike. Can’t wait to see one in the flesh. Love the gold forks by they way😉
Fabulous review as always Darcy.
This Scrambler has sparked my interest. I’m going to watch it again lol.
Sketcy overtake from the girl rider at 9:24 when a car was pulling out in front of you, good that you were aware!!!
❤
Spectacular presentation.
I like to have a lightweight dual-purpose/Scrambler type machine to ride.
I switch up from Harleys to a 250cc dual purpose I ride now which is adequate at about 19 horsepower how I use it.
Having 40 horsepower & 28 torque from a 400cc engine is enticing.
The weight of this Triumph is only about 70 pounds over my 250cc bike.
Triumph nailed it.
Great review as usual.
Another excellent review Darcy 👍. At last you guy's are getting the recognition you deserve with major manufacturers finally realising how relevant your reviews are and how important it is to reach out to your subscribers. Hopefully, the days of being brushed to one side are long behind you. 😊
A special mention required for the effort you put in to hearing the exhaust - well worth the work you do there too.
Many thanks 😊
I agree with you about the forks.
I would recommend changing the oil and oil filter every 5,000 miles. I would not recommend waiting for 10,000 miles.
It’s 10,000 miles or once a year so I think they’re anticipating that for 90% of people the year will come first. I do agree with you for sure 👍🏻
Absolutely....I do my bullet 500 at 2500, intercptr with fully synthetic at 4-5000. Getting my green 400x day after....watching this is putting an edge to how keen one is waiting..
One shouldn't wait till the oil is shot. Also I believe in Two First services..500 and 1000-1200..
Hey..all metric Kilometers..
Sorry guys but we have moved on since. Though we still drive on the Left😮
Lovely view and bike, looks like you've caught the sun Darcy!
Great review. Very different to you HD so interesting that you liked it so much. Livin' the dream in sunny Spain mate - good on yer.
Thank you! Yes I reckon if it was available when I turned 19 I may have bought one before getting the HD
Great review. This is the pick of the two 400's for me. If this bike was around a couple of years ago I think I would have stretched the back balance a bit more and picked this up over my Meteor 350. With the 40HP it'd take longer to outgrow the bike too I think. Also, as an aside, really like the filming and editing on your vids. Great job.
Gorgeous bike! Love it already!
Me too!
Great review as per normal, got a test ride on 400x booked for next week. Can't wait.
I rode one today, brilliant bike!
Excelent video!
I just love the Triumph Scramblers. I'm 6'8" and Im looking for a new, small bike to fit my other very large bikes. This might be it. I parked my behind on the new RE Himalayan this past weekend and that felt awesome too.
Another great review. I like this trend of smaller CC bikes, I think it will be good for bringing in new riders. You have to make something they can afford and is not too intimidating. Very nice, well done Triumph.
Totally agree
I have ordered a black speed will be getting it in March.
Picked the speed as I am 5’2 with 29 inside leg.
It’s a lot more height friendly for shorter but much better looking riders😎
I like the gold forks, makes it look more purposeful 😊
Really liking the look of the scrambler
A review of a bike I've been waiting for, by the reviewers I've been waiting for to review it.
Love all your video's (and the podcast) and after the 'speed 400' review this was the one I was waiting for. With so many channels now gushing about the Royal Enfield's it was good to hear your honest opinion about the RE 350's being underpowered. I think Triumph have nailed it with this gorgeous 400 scrambler. It sits perfectly in the range now - I wonder if they will ever consider a 125? Your video's are just getting better and better and for entertaining content I don't miss any of them. The ride footage, exhaust notes and throwing in a few stills were all up there with anything on mainstream TV. Thanks D'Arcy for your enthusiastic and honest review.
Very much appreciated!
The 350 J Platform was designed to have low power, it may noy suit everybody but there is market for these bikes & the proof is that they are selling in tons. Also there new 450 Liquid Cooled Engine is also great!
I had been thinking of getting the MG V7 Stone, but there are so many dirt roads up here in the mountains of Arizona, that I'm now considering this 400X. Decisions, decisions!
Thx for the Video!
Great as always!
Now i just need a comparison of the Triumph 400x, Himalayan 450 and Fantic Caballero 500 Scrambler to make a decision 😅
Nice review! The moto is amazing!
My 👍 as well as comment are well deserved for your top notch quality work you (as well as your Ol'Man) consistently deliver, Darcy 👍

Legend! Thank you 😎
@@MrDarcy-OlMan Yep, the two of you are *LEGENDS* indeed 👍
Awesome video, nice looking bike but agreed that I don't like the gold forks. Great riding shots in the Spanish mountains 🏔
Thanks
Very much appreciated 👍🏼👍🏼
Have booked this one.. agree with you on golden color front suspension. Will change after few years.
Good points in review. 😊
wow seems to be plenty of pulling power 👌
Best review I’ve seen Darcy ! I wrongly assumed it would be too small for me, you proved that wrong. I’m now regretting ordering a new Himalayan now..
Thank you, much appreciated 👍🏼👍🏼
I agree with you about the gold forks. They don't go with any of the other colours on the bike and stick out like a sore thumb.
The front mudguard looks like it will do a good job, but the rear doesn't look like it would do much.
Golden forks are trendy
Green and gold and brown is a good combo
Yes I think you're correct about the gold Forks... Works they're trying to be copying somebody else.
Another great review! While the gold forks don't bother me as much as (I think) they bug you, I do tend to prefer consistent colour schemes with sometimes one or two subtle accents of a different colour. Those are definitely not subtle.
Placed my order for this one in Carnival Red a couple months ago. Supposedly, I should be the first person here in Denmark to receive the Scrambler 400X when they arrive here. Can't wait to ride it.
You got her yet... 🤔 What's the verdict if you have ...? Many Great back roads to scratch around in Denmark 🇩🇰...
*Crap Game* 🎉
@@CrapGameRides I picked it up today. Really great bike. Even though I pretty much just got off a 1000cc machine with 150 hp, I didn't feel like I missed it at all when I started riding on the scrambler. It's just so smooth and easy to handle and just feels damn nice to ride. I could see myself riding on it all day at 80 kph.
@@Sunesen Marvelous... I'm also tempted by the Enfield 450 scram that'll be coming out soon.. I'll test ride both before deciding.. Just stick with Meteor 350 in the meantime. She's fine around North thailand. I used to live in Arhus, never had a bike licence but zipped around on scooters... At one time I had a Puch Maxi (complete with green milk case) 😂 Fun little machine. Damned thing could go near 70kph
*Crap Game* 🎉
Exquisite review. This bike is a 19 year old's dream. What an amazing first bike it would be. Very little kudos deficit, if any, in fact I think you would get some envious looks from more experienced bikers on bigger machines.. The seat finishes it off perfectly and the colour suits the brand the bike down to the ground. I am tempted to trade my Speed Twin in for one of these or buy one in India and ride in back!
A 19 years old will probably want the ktm 390
@@the.communist not if they want girlfriend
I get your point on the forks, but I like them. I know the color has noting to do with the performance, but the gold "looks" like it performs better. It's a bit of a show off move, and I approve.
It is always a joy to see your enthusiasm with these new bikes! It is also exciting for me to see you in Spain. The roads there look absolutely fantastic with fresh and smooth blacktop even through the center of the villages. I suspect this is something new since they became part of the European Union. These countries used to be much poorer and could not afford to maintain the roads like this.
The mudguards look much longer and with the added extender this would be great for keeping clean. The more upright seating position looks better for your height and frame. I understand what you mean with soaking up the bumps as I purchased a Multistrada last year and the bumps seem to disappear with the bigger forks and tougher suspension.
I agree with you on the gaudy shiny yellow forks! I don’t care who disagrees with me since I like to keep the multicolored show to a minimum.
I suggest you lean more into the curves while keeping the bike more upright and then you won’t overshoot your lane! Be careful out there especially in bad weather!
The pricing is simply amazing considering how much things cost these days! Eggs here in Miami have more than doubled in two years, but Triumph manages to offer a value price point!
Glad you enjoyed, the roads were incredible! And the bike was superb. Don’t worry I overshot the lane on purpose knowing nothing was coming the other way 😁
😂
Spain joined the EU already in 1986. They have excellent raod surfaces for decades now, so nothing new. Sadly roads in the UK are much worse.
@@FTStratLPwhat I mean is the Euro integration where people had a common currency with the rich European countries, such as Germany. Germany went down and Spain went up. This was in 2002.
This bike definitely is on my radar now... as much as I want to be a hard-core off-roader,I'm not.I think this would do just fine on the TET.
I have this bike on order in red. Unlike most people on this thread I think the gold fork looks great. Someone earlier in this thread mentioned carbon wrapping them? Never heard of that but maybe it’s an option if you don’t like the gold.
Well done for choosing the gold forks option !
It's not an option.
No, I agree with you as regards to the gold forks.
Awesome Darcy 👍 love these bikes, they look more expensive than the price tag! I don’t know how Triumph does it! Such great value. Possibly the best single cylinder in its class right there. Definitely one for my girls when they start to ride bikes 👍 I prefer the Scrambler too, prefer the styling and will be used mainly on roads. Potholes yes thats UK roads for you. 🤣 Thanks for the video 🙏
Gold or chrome both look good. My xjr has chrome, i really like that. Blacked out i thonk would look ugly real soon.
Hell yeah!
Test road speed and scrambler found speed to cramp scrambler felt like a big bike and comfortable looks are great too and to top it all it looks like a triumph just sold my Bonneville 1200 as I am 73 and has got a bit heavy loved the Bonni but would have dropped in soon awaiting delivery of Scrambler in May
Nice review Darcy, I definately like the styling of the Scrambler over the Speed so now I'm just waiting for a review of the Himalayan for comparison, both Bikes have a lot of style and it might just come down to the cost in the end. Test rides to book for spring I think.
Thank you! Watch this space!
Looks like a great little package. I think silver forks rather than gold would fit in better with the rest of the lines though.
Great review! Good informative and honest analysis😁. I bought one in Norway 🇳🇴
Great to hear!
The styling of the RE Classic 350 is fabulous and the power delivery smile inducing pottering around, my Interceptor was equally fab. However, I’ve just had a test ride on the Speed 400 and was stunned by the bike…heart wrenching decision on styling as, lets face it, the RE Classic is glorious. However, this new Triumph platform is an eye opener….deposit paid for a Speed 400. Jury out on the Scrambler as a replacement touring bike as well!
I'm with you on the forks, black would definitely look better. But it still wouldn't stop me buying one, cracking little bike by what I've seen and as you say the Indian market will soon throw up any concerns regarding reliability due to their sheer average yearly mileage.I think we will be seeing a lot of these about when they officially offer it for sale here in the UK and everywhere else. I think triumph have pulled a blinder. ☺ 👍
I think it would be interesting to see you do a preview of the new Royal Enfield Himalayan, because you have ridden on the others, and because most adventure bikes spend most of there time on the bitumen. I also read a story from a guy that rode one and then changed his order for the 650. He said it felt odd with steering (maybe he had not ridden a 21 inch front wheel bike) and the fly by wire throttle was odd, which is maybe just getting use to it.
Beautiful bike! I think Triumph has a winner here. I wish it was lighter, but that’s true of almost everything these days. Excellent work on the review!
Many thanks 😊
Great test video. I'm as tall as you so the scram seems the better option. Will be booking a test ride Monday after seeing your vid. Cheers. Good work.
i fully agree on the forks. They really don't fit the look of the bike at all. that being said, i'm seriously considering grabbing one when they arrive in Oz. Thanks for the review
Between the two, I'd take the Scrambler. For a few hundred more, there are some excellent additions here. Great review!
Many thanks 😊
Add few hundred more and you will get Honda cb500x or nx500.
@@_tomlab add a few hundred more on top of that and you can buy a horse. my point is they are very different bikes, some people like a bike that is visually stunning not looking like an insect.
@@_tomlab I like Honda / had 2 CBR’s, but I’d still take this Scrambler. No wrong answers here though they’re all great bikes
Like it! But did you lose a handguard bolt off the left bar?
I did yes, not sure how
WOW, this video looks like you had Ridley Scott helping you out. looks amazing.
Hehe, good job. What a great video to find coming back from work. I've been waiting Darcy to review this bike since last summer when they announced them, as I'm the same height as him. I'm hoping to also hear the Ol' Man's opinion soon when he gets the chance to ride one.
Darcy, if you started now as a beginner rider (full license) but your dream has always been a T120, would you choose to settle for this instead for the first year? Maybe also considering that the T120 is triple the price of the Scrambler (Danish prices).
Thanks and safe rides!
PS Black or silver forks better for sure, it's a rather classic bike no need to floss.
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it. I would absolutely get this bike as a first bike before getting the T120, you’ll appreciate the T120 more when you come to buying it. These 400s are absolutely excellent!
@@MrDarcy-OlMan Thanks a lot for replying, I really look up to your opinion. Good luck with next reviews - a Kawasaki coming up I've heard from a bird 🐦
I totally agree on the forks! The only thing I don't like about these bikes.
Great review of this and also the Speed 400. these are good looking bikes, I think I like the Scrambler out of the two. As for the gold forks, I don't mind them but for a naked bike like this they just stand out too much and don't go with any other colours on the bike, black would be better. Maybe I am just too old and the target buyer likes them.
Black forks for sure. And single piece flat seat would be better than the 2 piece sporty looking seat.
Agrees , 2x
Very good review and a great sounding bike right out of the box. I guess I am in the minority also in that I do not like gold forks. If I owned it, they would be the first thing to be replaced, probably with black. Enjoy your time in Pain. Cheers and ride safe. Dan. ✌️🏍🇨🇦
Thanks Dan!
Good review! Fork colors are divisive - gold is in. But I have a Street Scrambler with black forks and I do think they make the look. Especially with the khaki green tank... 👍
Yes we prefer the black forks, good choice 👍🏼
You do speak like your father, I am a big fan of your channel .
Quite subjective regarding the colour scheme: I’m not a fan of green on bikes, in general, however, this looks great. In terms of the gold forks, I think it flows well. That’s all personal preference but better than others that mix gold forks with yellow or three shades of silver.
Nice video. Would you say that the Scrambler' suspension has the same calibration compared to the Speed?
Longer travel front & rear..
About 20-30 mm more
Another great non bias review. Nice to see a channel that is open to all makes and models. Unlike Mr Fillingham or should I say Mr Enfield
Thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed
Rip here guys. Took your advice and changed the channel name. Thanks again. Sounds as if Triumph is aggressively going after the entry level rider. Good for them. I wish them great success. RE needs a little competition. I agree with you about the forks, too showy for me.
Hey rip, like the new name 👌🏻 also your recent videos have been fantastic! Definitely they’re going after the royal Enfield fans big time. And it’s nice to have a new choice
I agree about the front forks. I think the gold anodized finish has been played out.
You are right on the forks. They don't look toooo bad but would be a lot better in a silver or black. The main thing I think is a shame on this bike and the speed 400 is the speedo surround and needle, both look like the cheapest plastic sprayed with any old paint that had "silver" written on the can. Big shame. If they brought out a black speedo surround to stop drawing attention to it then that would be great.
Make video on spoke vs alloy wheels
I am quite intrigued by this one. I think I will wait until the aftermarket picks up for it, but I think I would really like it. The price is actually quite good so far.
The missis has 400speed coming in March to join the Indian Super Chief Limited and the BMW R18 in the garage, I'm holding on for the Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello if you ever get one to review.. Cheers from Mexico
Awesome 👍🏼👍🏼
I think the forks look okay with the green model (reminiscent of classic Lotus F1 cars) but look awful with both the red and the black models.
True..I like black for my bikes but went for the lime green here just on account of that stark fork color
Did a test eide on the speed 2 week ago an tomorrow i'l be testing the scrambler witch I ordered and will be coming around the end of april. I went for the black one and I think the golden fork looks smassing on it 😅.
Awesome 👍🏼
@@MrDarcy-OlMan the testride was a comfirmation of what I thought. It's a wonderfull bike. Plenty of power for the country roads (witch we have enough of here in belgium.) And it also holds it's own on the freeway. Go's up to 150km/h without a blink. Now it's the waiting game for me.
@@Steph9nine excellent! We knew you’d not be disappointed 👍🏼👍🏼
You and your pop have my sense of motorbike fashion, and of course you are 100% correct on the ugly gold forks.
Thank you very much!
Thank you for an excellent review of both 400s and can I say how professional your shoot was ,as for myself I should have waited before buying my interceptor, its done 1100 miles and is troublesome and the quality is just not there either, mine is rusting up and the engine covers are badly pitted already despite me cleaning it off every outing and the weight is as much as a ships anchor ,it has a very uncomfortable saddle too ,it does looks good and rides ok although leisurely, anyhoo my fault for listening to anti anything triumph Stuart Fillingham who said it would vibrate ,be uneconomical ,wouldnt have a good finish etc etc ,i note he hasnt apologised to Triumph ,so i am going to chop in my year old RE and get a speed 400 ,cant wait ......
Many thanks 😊
Great review. Would you buy the 400x over the 400 speed?
I would personally yes
I have been using Scrambler 400x for 500 odd kms. The engine stalling while shifting down from 4th to 3rd gear is very prominent. Triumph has been doing ECU updates but the problem remains.
That’s a real shame! I didn’t have any issues when I rode it
Definitely better looking than the Speed version, although it would look even better if it had spoke rims, if I was in the market for a small capacity runaround bike then this would be top of the list 👍
Tubeless tyres are more practical though
Been hearing about abrupt carburetor and vibration at highway speed? Any comments
I don’t think bike riders in India riding this bike will ride more than 5 to 6 k / year due to the heavy traffic conditions in India &busy lifestyle . The service interval is 16000 km a year just shows how much confidence Triumph has on its bike & I think not more than 10 percent of people who will buy this bike will ride above 10000 km / year & triumph knows this & is using statics to their own advantage! I don’t think more than 3-5 percent of this bike owners will cross 15000 km/ year.
This is my rough judgment as i don’t live in India since 2007 & owned a Yamaha RX 100 from 1994 -2007 .
May be things have changed at the moment so people who own bikes should comment on the km they ride / year.
Thanks
It's a ploy, wake up .
I agree with those gawdy gold forks . Chrome would fit the bike so much better .😊
or black
Green with a brown seat, looks great, maybe this is your next bike? I'm sure it wouldn't hurt your channel, plenty of people following Triumph and especially these new 400's. I agree the gold forks aren't nice. They don't suit the bike. Royal Enfield must be very worried, I don't think it will be too long before we see the new 450 Himalayan engine fitted to some of there smaller road bikes like the Hunter.
Wish they had the 650 twin engine mated to the 500 comfortable ergos and looks..
Though in the looks dept the Inty is no slouch either..neat compact classic...in case u are willing to forget about some quirky ergos
What’s it like at motorway speeds regarding vibration?, I’m guessing it’s over 6k revs at 70mph, but have Triumph managed to isolate the vibration from the bars & pegs?
I’ve got a few bikes ranging from old brits of 200cc up to Triumphs and BMW’s of 1200cc but I can definitely see a space in the collection for one of these scramblers.
Didn’t feel much vibration at all!
@@MrDarcy-OlMan looks like they’ve done a good job of counterbalancing it then, or isolated it well, I’ll take one for a test ride once the queue’s die down 😂, thanks.
You could carbon wrap the forks, it would stop any damage to the gold anodising during your ownership as well.
Good idea!
