      The long shore map I 200% believe RESEMBLES ODST UPLIFT RESERVE!! In the beginning of the mission look out to the ocean and I feel like longshore is JUST out of site towards the left! There’s a bunch of industrial buildings over there! Additionally, there is an aircraft carrier in the ocean of longshore that has the ODST fighter in it
      EDIT: Halo Fandom states "Longshore is a medium-large map set in a fish-processing plant on the shores of Old Mombasa." I WAS RIGHT
      (Makes sense as this came out within the same map pack as Orbital, simultaneous to the release of H3: ODST

    I always found that the familiarity between Halo's campaign and multiplayer levels only served to enhance the experience. Borrowing assets, rather than straight up cloning one map to another, made me feel like I was in Outskirts, but a different suburb. And this general feeling made both maps feel that much bigger. Any multiplayer map that includes a ring in the skybox is just another area that isn't featured in the campaign.
    I thought it would be so cool to get out of bounds in one mission, The Storm or Floodgate for example, and find myself in the multiplayer map Foundry. Like an Easter egg.
    Maybe the mod community can make it happen.

      It’s ok with a few, but I like unique maps still. The way reach did it tho sucked. They just forced it so it had terrible design. They were just shit play spaces cause they were made for campaign, or they were just tacked onto the campaign and a bunch of useless used space as they were made for multiplayer so u never really see any of it. Kinda like boardwalk, and power houses. Huge areas that u never explored in campaign just walked through as u weren’t forced to, and they just kinda didn’t feel good in the multiplayer that much either. Spire was like the only really fun map in that game, but it was a btb map.

  • @JinVanStein

    It's a common misconception that the Reach multiplayer maps were locations pulled from Campaign---they were designed for multiplayer first, and then placed in the campaign afterwards.
    Someone in a VIDOC (I think it was a 343i employee discussing H4's planned map design direction) said it *backwards* circa 2010-2012, so a lot of people assumed that was how the design went but it was just a mistake/jab. If memory serves, the Firefight maps *were* pulled from the campaign, so that might be where some people got confused and mixed it up.

      Nice, i figured that was what the did ever since that level in New Alexandria, where one of the levels is Reflection/Ivory Tower from Halo 2.

    • @deafbyhiphop
      @deafbyhiphop 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's very obvious they were designed for multiplayer and campaign. A lot of those maps that you see in campaign you barely interact with or just walk in and walk out like Ivory Tower in New Alexandria. You basically walk in push a button and walk out, it's obvious that entire map was built for multiplayer and they just reused the asset for campaign because they were short for time. Though I don't think this was last minute but very intentional from the beginning, they knew they didn't have enough time to make every area look unique for the campaign.

  • @Nefnoj
    @Nefnoj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    That's what I found that made Spartan Ops so interesting. While playing the same map repeatedly got annoying, the few times it put you in a multiplayer map, it felt familiar, yet fresh.
    There's also something so magical when a multiplayer map is ripped from the campaign but with a different visual style, like how Powerhouse is a daytime version of its campaign map.

      Most of the Halo Reach maps were there in the beta when the campaign wasn't finished, so if anything, I would argue the opposite: Halo Reach didn't rip multiplayer maps out of the campaign, it shoe-horned them into the campaign.

    I honestly feel this is bit of a weak concept, and potentially misgiving title wise, compared to a lot of your work. As others mention, there is a lot of reuse of campaign assets which is only to cut down on workload and game size. Some connections you make here aren't the greatest but quite a few are, hell Id say that one you were talking about's palatte and The Ark would be a great example as a throwback to a past version of The Storm, whether actual campaign story or lore based art.
    Don't get me wrong, you guys are amazing with Halo but this one felt a bit too much of a stretch in most cases and again misleading. I was expecting some hidden or old campaign art at the very least that became the maps, the maps potentially leading into campaign missions etc. Anyway, keep up the good stuff lads.

  • @TheHaloHedgehog
    @TheHaloHedgehog 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Aside from what others have already mentioned about reusing assets simply being more efficient, I think I like that it was done in Reach specifically because Reach (the planet) was a very big focus and almost a character in its own way in that game. So having the multiplayer maps be from the campaign helps with that idea imo, and makes them feel like actual locations that served a purpose in the world instead of simply arenas to fight in. Plus it also helped with the Invasion mode as well to really help sell the idea of that mode being about the in universe battles that took place on Reach.

    • @GTAVictor9128
      @GTAVictor9128 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    In my ideal scenario, there would be a mix of totally unique multiplayer maps and environments pulled from the campaign. I feel it's an indication of good set design if an area works well in both campaign and multiplayer. Haning some maps pulled directly from campaign and/or using the same aesthetics helpt tie the two usually separate environments together and strengthens the game as a whole.

    I enjoy multi-player maps more when you spawn in and you feel like it's the missing room in a campaign level or it calls itself back to a story point in the game. My biggest example is the H2 map turf if you never played the story the destroyed scarab means nothing but if you played it you look at it an think "oh this is the aftermath area of that level"

    Hey Rocket Sloth, I've got a video idea. Could you guys take a look at the different architecture styles across the games? maybe we can see human or covenant building specs evolve as the war goes on. Or another idea, in previous videos you have checked out how the vehicles have changed, but what about the static defenses/cover and which are the most successful in allowing players to be both in cover but have the vision to keep fighting. Nobody likes it when the cover in games isn't at the right eight for us to shoot over.

    I've always had the feeling myself that Foundry was a part of Longshore, due to what you see outside of the window of Foundry was like a part of where Longshore was as well. I know that this does not really tie in with the whole Campaign mission topic in the video but I thought that wherever Longshore is a part of, Foundry may also be too.

    I kinda like when the maps are from the campaign. I remember way back playing COD 4 and noticing it.

    I like the reused areas from campaign in games like CoD or later Halo. I always love seeing the little adjustments devs make to campaign maps to fit multiplayer, the maps are always unique in their own way whether it's opened up doors/pathways or new set pieces.

    Really reaching with some of these where its just textures or setting type were talking about being the same. None of it is RIPPED from campaign or at least its all redone and reworked for balance and gameplay

    Back in halo 3 me and my friends used to stop in random places of the campaing to do a FFA. There were great areas to do that.
    There are so many great little places in Infinite. Like the 3 Banished tower floors with UNSC arenas.
    Wish they just ripped them straight up and made a lot of content for the game quickly.
    And evolve them into better and unique maps with time.

    Halo Reach pulling the multiplayer maps directly from the campaign was my least favorite thing about that game.

    In that very first part where you land on the Ark in Halo 3, the metal walls resemble the walls and towers that surround sandtrap and sandbox ~to me~, at least architecturally, I know that the towers are a bit more three dimensional in design.

    Most of the Halo Reach maps were there in the beta when the campaign wasn't finished, so if anything, I would argue the opposite: Halo Reach didn't rip multiplayer maps out of the campaign, it shoe-horned them into the campaign.

    This is a good video topic bc now maybe devs will see ND use this template as a way to make more multiplayer maps fast and easy so ppl don't get stuck playing the same three maps for 6months

    I always assumed they used standoff when making the final cinematic with the war memorial. Sort of a re using a multiplayer map for the campaign instead of the other way around

    I don't think multiplayer looking like campaign is bad at all. I actually think it's an asset. It helps the 2 feel connected and cohesive

  • @Tarotb

    I always liked that the multiplayer maps were in the same area as the campaign; maybe a few miles away, maybe down one of the closed doors. It created the impression of a larger universe.
    For that reason I liked the copied assets, because it lent a sense of continuity.
    I certainly didn't like it in halo 4 where whole levels got reused for warzone; that just made it feel like a cheap add on rather than something they'd invested time in.
