  • From Halo CE all the way to later Halo's, there have been multiple instances of popular Halo maps being remade. But which Halo map ACTUALLY has been remade the most? Which Halo map takes the crown here and can call itself the most and best remade Halo map?

@@slyp5409 indeed it doesn't count if made by fans. Ofcourse fans want all the classics back. But they did forget that H3 map that was also very similar to blood gulch we used to all play bowling on it, Standoff, it was based on harvest or earth i think and had two symmetrical pillbox bases sunk into the ground just like bloodgulch and was a very good map for daminating with a warthog or sniper and you could open and close the shutters on the bases. Biggest difference is its more condensed into the center, doesnt that count? Clearly inspired by the gulch as much if not more than valhalla even.. Or am I the only one who felt that.

Blood Gulch reings supreme as always! I had no idea about Longshore, I felt that it was a different map aesthetically. Avalanche I'm with you on, it has a lot of similarities to Sidewinder but I think Zealot definitely is a Midship remake just expanded upon.

    • @scottwatrous
      @scottwatrous 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bloodline was sort of that.
Back when we were still doing Halo: CE LAN parties on Xbox, I was still in school and I was always drawing and scheming and wanting to get into game dev back then. I remember at one point I drew up all my master plans for what I determined would be the most epic level. It would have been a snow version of Blood Gulch with the dragons teeth from Hang Em High in the middle area, and a taller canyon that looked like the walls of Assault on the Control Room that had the traversable ledges that ran around the perimeter, with the iconic AotCR double bridge that crossed the middle of the map. You'd have the teleporters at the bases take you to your side of the bridge, and there was no way to jump down and survive but you could jump from your bridges to the enemy bridge, and then use the teleporter to get back down to the enemy base. So it became a wild sort of 'high road' option for CTF, while also being an epic sniper platform. Then Halo PC had Gephyrophobia which kindof had the bridge thing but like, just the bridge thing.
I always meant to try to attempt to make my idea when Forge came out, but by then I was in college and too busy to spend time making maps and I don't think I could have turned Hemmorage into exactly my idea with the tools that were available. But we'll see, maybe with Infinite's forge we'll get a blood gulch template and I can give it a go.

    • @AidenJuarez09Photo

The video is great, I learned a lot as a long time fan. I guess we have maps that get translated to new games, some maps get remakes (they are morphed to fit a new theme and play style), and then the last kind which are heavily influenced by the base map.
      Blackout is the first type.
      Guardians is the second.
      Longshore is the last.
I view Fragmentation from Infinite as a mix. Bigger to fit the new play style plus new features to the map, but the layout and essence are the same as the others in its history.
The forge maps are all trying hard to be a translation of the map, but all end up looking plain within the limitations of forge.

Blood Gulch plays completly different to Valhalla, the only thing they have in common is that they're both maps that are in a boxed canyon with two bases in them. I recommend Ascend Hyperion's video were he goes in depth explaining why they are so different, but here are the bullet points:
      - Vallhala works in any sandbox, whereas Blood Gulch requires a very specific type of sandbox were precision weapons underperform at long range
      - Blood Gulch is a flat and open map, compared to Valhalla which has plenty of cover
      - Blood Gulch has two sniper "towers" on both sides of the map, whereas Valhalla has none
      - Blood Gulch encourages stealth and vehicle combat much more than Valhalla.

a map remake is always a direct, close to 1:1 remake, none of this wishy washy "Oh its got a similar layout" or "It's here but it never was put into any game." If it wasn't in a game and it isn't a close 1:1 remake, its not a remake

if any of the half points are counted then, valhalla and all remakes of that should each count as a half point to blood gulch because of all maps bungie was very clear that it was a re-imagining of blood gultch. On the other hand if that sound ridiculous, then so do all the other half points.

What a cool map for Halo Infinite and game would be is a section of the campaign and a form of elimination/territory capture. You have like 5-10 FOB’s with 16+ players per FOB. Once you capture a FOB the team members of that FOB can no longer respond and their position will be indicated to the players that captured the FOB (as in the campaign you captured data). They can recapture it and all players will respond if recaptured. The Game objective is to capture all the FOB’s and eliminated the enemy.
This could easily be a 30 minute to hour long game.

I remember reading Bungie weekly updates back 10+ years ago. One of the phrases bungie kept mentioning was "spiritual successor." If I recall correctly, bungie thought direct 1:1 remakes were a bit boring. But they used that label for maps like guardian and Valhalla. Not direct remakes but took very obvious inspiration from them. Guardian and lockout have sniper towers, elbows, etc. And Valhalla and blood gulch have 2 bases at opposite ends with a pretty big field between them.
I also can’t remember for certain but I thought I remember reading that guardian was a spiritual successor of lockout and ascension.

Zealot at 11:51 is NOT a remake of Midship. It's a remake of Derelict.
Despite its fancy Covenant interior design overhaul, it is almost exactly the same as the Halo: CE map Derelict, which is a derelict Forerunner space station, just like Zealot is in the aft section of a derelict Covenant ship. Derelict was also remade into Desolation for Halo 2, and Assembly in Halo 3, making it a rare 4 map remake that you completely left off of your list. If you follow the design of Derelict through Assembly and into Zealot, the connection becomes crystal clear. While Desolation from H:2 is basically identical to Derelict in H:CE, they made alterations in Assembly.
First they removed the teleporters in Assembly and replaced them with grav-lifts from the first floor to second floor in the center of the map and on opposite sides of the outer ring in the "bases" and "towers" on Assembly. Still rapid travel methods, but only vertically. Then they wanted to bring back the horizontal rapid travel from the original Derelict in Zealot, so they made the grave-lifts in the center shoot you to the outer ring, and the grav-lifts in the outer ring shoot you into space at an angle to descend wherever you want. Midship remakes have no rapid travel solutions. Because they swapped the teleporters for grav-lifts in Assembly and Zealot, they required new ways to ascend to the upper level of the main room to prevent the grav-lifts from becoming annoying choke points, so they added ramps where there used to just be enclosed hallways in Derelict. But make no mistake that aside from these unique features of this map's version, it is in fact not even close to being the same map as Midship. The only similarity to Midship Zealot has is that it's round, and it's inside a Covenant ship. Of course Covenant ships are round by design, and many maps are round without being Covenant ships, such as Derelict, so those are silly things by which to call it a remake of Midship.
If you want other similarities between Derelict and Zealot that are absolutely unlike Midship and its remakes:
    1. Derelict was one of the few H:CE multiplayer maps to feature a skybox in space which it shows off proudly with massive windows, which is referenced in that you can actually go out into space through the energy field on Zealot's roof. Like the designers asked themselves "what if you could actually walk through these windows?"
    2. Derelict has only 2 floors in its loop, with added "towers" on the sides and a split third floor in the "bases" in Assembly, and a rooftop floor in Zealot. Midship has only 2 floors in its "bases", and 3 split level floors in the rest of the map, opposite of Derelict remakes.
    3. The "bases" in Assembly and Zealot both possess overlooks on their ramps that allow defenders to attack people ascending or descending the ramps from above, encouraging you to ascend backward to protect yourself against camping or crouching guardians that are hidden on your motion tracker. Midship variants lack this feature.
    4. Derelict had multiple means of rapidly travelling across the map in the form of teleporters which Assembly changed. Assembly replaced these with vertical-only grave lifts in the center, one in each base, and one in each tower. Zealot replaced these with grav-lifts that launch you onto the upper floor of the outer ring from the lower center area, and into space from the outer ring from which you could drop back into the map almost anywhere. None of the Midship variants have rapid travel of any kind.
    5. The looped path around the outside in Zealot and Derelict is winding but uninterrupted, and does not force the player to ascend or descend from the second floor to make their way around, very much unlike Midship. Assembly does interrupt this, but only slightly. It's possible with timed jumps to remain effectively on the second floor in Assembly at all times. Zealot restores it to a full loop.
    6. The loop around the outside has many areas that are completely exposed to the center of the map, but the central area of the map blocks direct line of sight across the map. Midship's center is completely wide open in every way.
    7. There are no medium to large sized rooms as "bases" in Zealot. It's just a continuation and section of the hallway just like in Derelict where everything is just part of the loop. Assembly has "bases" that feel like large rooms due to their layout, but are actually just looping paths with ramps. Midship has medium to large round rooms as "bases". This is important when explosions go off such as by grenades and rockets.
    8. Zealot has a defined inner circular area with an upper and lower floor, each of which has heavy cover against enemies in the outer loop just like Derelict. Meanwhile, Midship has little to no cover for those in the middle, and its floors are more of an undefined split level 3 story to 2 story design in a more fluid pattern.
    9. Related to 8, the middle platform in Derelict remakes is perfectly even with the second floor of the map, and blocks line of sight across the map, which it does NOT, and is floating above in the "bases" in the third floor in Midship and its remakes. This is vital for line of sight of Carbines, BRs, and DMRs, and completely changes the way the map plays.
It's also important to note that I didn't play Halo 5, so for all I know one of the two "remakes of Midship" you listed could have also actually been a remake of Derelict and not Midship. It's possible that Derelict has been remade 5 times, and I wouldn't be able to tell you. Because, again, I only played through 5's campaign once right before Infinite came out, and never played its multiplayer. I don't know its maps.

This video just reminded me that Guardian has never been officially remade before, and that's crazy to me. Halo 3 maps in general don't have a lot of remakes, with Valhalla, The Pit, and Avalanche being the only 3, 2 being remade in Halo 4, and Avalanche in Halo Online. Also, unless I'm forgetting something, I don't think any of the original Halo Reach maps have ever been remade officially (though I can see why, since most of Reach's original maps aren't the best).

Look. The following is the definitive way to rank maps.
If the PATHING is the SAME, MIRRORED, or includes no more than TWO additional structures INSIDE, or ADJACENT to the PATHING, it is a remake, REGARDLESS of the art, texturing, environment, or player skills. It should count as 1 point.
If at least 75% of the original pathing can be found WITHIN another map, or if the map is SCALED, ROTATED along a horizontal axis, it is INSPIRED. If the map only contains a name in homage to an original map, and contains no less than 4 MAJOR features (Valhalla has 2 bases opposed at opposing ends of an ovular map that has cave features (1) and rolling elevation that creates deadspace (1) (military term) between combatants as they cross the central open area with a description referencing a gorge in homage of blood gulch. These maps can be counted as a half point toward the original map. Maps that SUBSEQUENTLY are inspired by this inspired map, count as inspired .5 points toward this inspired map. Maps that are SUBSEQUENT remakes of the inspired map count as BOTH, 1 point toward the inspired map AND .5 points toward the original map the original inspired map was inspired by.
This argument inspired by the Rocket team. .5 points to them.

Before watching. I wanna guess its definately lockout. Theres gaurdian, blackout, and a forge version in reach. It may not be the most but its my favorite. (We will see if im wrong) I hope to see a remake of headlong and gaurdian or blackout anyways I loved those map. Side winder was also badass, a good team map like bloodgulch or valhalla. After watching, im so happy to see lockout basically tie with blood gulch. I love both maps and the memories of old friends that we shared on them.

Regarding Longshore, I personally feel like if you can't at a glance from a spawn point go "Oh, this is exactly like that one map from X", then it's not exactly a true remake. The movement and sightlines are different on Longshore than Hang Em High, not to mention the fact it has vehicle spawns too. For that reason I'd say Hang Em High only has 3 variations.

I would say the following criteria to count a map:
    1. Available in public multiplayer
    2. Approximately the size & shape
    3. Mostly the same features
For the size and features, I would give a fair bit of leeway, as each game has variations to its competitive environment, but if its within 10% of size and 75% of features are the same, I would count it.
I would include forgeworld maps regardless of who made them as long as they were officially supported by bungie/343 as maps you could encounter in public lobbies.
I would also give a half point to those maps that have the core of another map, but have some defining features that make them notably distinct(e.g. longshore, zealot)

343 already expressed disinterest in remaking maps for halo infinite, but i would love to see reimaginings in the vane of sand box to sand trap, or Valhalla to bloodgulch, zealot to midship. maps that are invocative of those classic locations, without outright being copies. I grew up with halo 3, and missing the advent of xbox live with halo 2, being a young child with a ps2 at the time i missed out on some of those halo 2 and halo CE dlc maps, that really captured my imagination as a kid, i would walk around waterworks, or coagulation feeling that creepy empty multiplayer map lobby sensation on slayer, wondering how it would play out with other people.

  • @SnekInASuit
    @SnekInASuit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hang 'Em High: definitely should not count longshore at all. the map plays entirely differently, and before this video I couldn't see the resemblance at all. after this video, the resemblance seems like a stretch. the original map's main characteristic is the wide open center with small bits of cover and mostly nowhere to hide, with enclosed buildings all around. longshore has none of that high ground/low open dynamic, so it's a new map.
Battle Creek: should absolutely count as 4. even if 343 didn't put the map on disc, or in rotation, they released it at some point. if it's 343/bungie made, and is released by them, and is the same map, it should absolutely count.
Zealot: I think the half point here is fair, because it plays similar to midship, but is still different enough. a lot of the same gameplay happens here when you isolate smaller parts of the map and how kills are gotten in them. also, counting the two versions in H5 is even more reason to count official forge variants for the others.
The Cage and Guardian: no, even if some of the gameplay in smaller areas is kind of similar to lockout, they are both completely different evolutions of the same idea, much like longshore. guardian is closer than the cage, but the orientation of the encounters is completely different, so overall the map plays differently. for this reason, I also think you're being harsh on blackout, because the individual encounters are the same as lockout, in the same locations, with the same cross-map dynamics. I play them literally the same, it doesn't matter if there's minute differences or not. also, regarding the forge world variant, yes, that is official, as long as it released at some point. if someone has it, and it was made by bungie, it counts. if it's truly lost? then no.
basically what I think it all boils down to is that the criteria don't have to be so insane, or detailed. if the map feels like it plays mostly the same, then it's the same map. if you can't play it the same, then it's not. if it was officially made and released, then it counts. if not, it doesn't. simple.
also, some elaboration on guardian in specific: I think it's disingenuous for anyone to suggest it isn't at least inspired by lockout. it has some similar parts of the map, just in completely different places. you got the shotgun corridor with the dropdown hole directly above and a dead end on the bottom, you got the L-shaped catwalk that's exposed to one half of the map, and you got the sniper tower that has view of two building exits and a lookout on the opposite side of the map, with only one or two ways there. same elements, but in a completely different layout, so not the same. zealot, however, is in mostly the same layout with most of the same elements, but it still doesn't play quite the same. that one's just hard to judge, so the half there is just because it SHOULD feel the same based on its layout, but it doesn't.
