It’s actually crazy how it isn’t underrated at all, and is widely loved. In America, we were simply introduced to Z first, for the most part. Dragon ball never aired on TV when I was a kid. I had to seek out Dragonball on my own, which was tricky when you were a kid, before everyone had access to high speed internet. So, for the most part, most Americans have zero nostalgia for Dragonball. But Dragonball is still a highly rated anime. Underviewed, in the West, maybe, but not underrated.

OG DB is my favorite. Not only does it have some of my favorite fights but it also has a good mix of more comedic scenes with it's more serious moments. Plus I love adult Goku at the end of OG DB. Also humans were still a threat to the saiyans. Builds up many of the side characters so that they can have some of their moments in DBZ

Goku is the only prevalent character in the main arcs of dragon ball that aren’t tournament arcs. Red ribbon army saga only focuses on him and tien is only effective in goku’s king piccolo fight because he could fly. In the tournament arcs other characters get fights and great moments but goku is still the primary character of focus in the tournament arcs. In DBZ other side characters get focused on much more. Goku gets the main fights against the main antagonists but DBZ doesn’t really focus on goku as a character the way dragon ball does. In the namek saga, mostly gohan and krillin, and later vegeta, become basically the main characters that get the most focus until goku arrives and piccolo arrives later. The saiyan saga, goku isn’t even there for most of it. The Android saga, goku is also not there for most of it and he doesn’t even get the main fight against cell. Gohan does and goku really only gets one major fight that entire saga. The buu saga definitely tries to start with gohan as the main character but it certainly does take a drastic shift to only focusing on goku and vegeta. Also giving some important focus to Mr. Satan of all people, in spite of all the other characters deserving more focus. So, most of DBZ actually isn’t really about goku. He’s just the one that gets the big fights. That doesn’t mean that the other characters aren’t focused on at all, far from it. In dragon ball, characters like krillin were much closer to goku in strength than he was in Z but krillin did a lot more in Z than he did in dragon ball. He was basically one of main characters in Z, although in dragon ball he was basically a side character. Yamcha on the other hand, was always a side character. It really sucks how all of the other characters got sidelined and totally outclassed in Z but it really didn’t happen until the buu saga, when even piccolo got completely sidelined and shafted. For instance, one of my favorite things about krillin is that he’s so outclassed in Z, yet he’s always putting in the work against bad guys like frieza and vegeta. He’s actually important in the story in Z but in dragon ball he gets good fights but doesn’t impact the plot very much. Even yajirobe did more in Z than he did in dragon ball. Cutting off vegeta’s tail basically saved everyone and nothing he did in dragon ball even came close. So, Z really didn’t immediately sideline everybody. It was more gradual with how they sidelined people. Even tien got a big moment in the cell saga. Don’t get me wrong, I like dragon ball much more than Z. Roshi, chaozu, and yamcha were immediately sidelined in Z, though and I hate that.

You’re such an underrated TH-camr bro. You’re discussions are on par with most “big” anime TH-camrs. I’ve been a dragon ball fan for as long as I can remember but never heard anyone to talk about it the way you do. It’s not all about which character is stronger or who would win in a hypothetical fight. It’s about the anime as a whole, the good and the bad. Keep it up bro 💯

Here in my country, Greece, the OG DB aired in its correct order, before DBZ. While I love them both, I think the OG DB is better. The more DBZ raised the stakes, the more it was losing the OG's heart and soul. DBZ shoved aside anyone who wasn't alien, it became more about power levels than actual skill and even the series' namesake items stopped being the focal point after Frieza Saga and became pretty much a McGuffin. Piccolo's redemption during the Saiyan Saga doesn't make sense without the OG DB, you can tell there's something missing if you haven watched the OG DB first. The whole time travelling shenaningans of the Cell Saga always lose me, and the Buu Saga is a complete chaos of a story.

also tao pai pai was an awesome villain. the way he threw pillars only to instantly jump on them and ride them. i thought he was sooo over powered that goku never stood a chance. looking back, that thought didn't age well lol

      @ether2275 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

@@vvocalI will say that scene where he threw the pillar just to ride on it was wild when I first saw it. Dragon Ball definitely had something special about it. I don't know if it was because it felt more light hearted and cozy but it is one of those few shows where I even enjoyed the side quests/filler in it. In DBZ it is because of the high stakes that I would not want to sit through filler and would rather instantly skip to the next important part of the story. But in OG Dragon Ball I felt like it was so much more chill where I could just sit back and enjoy the ride. The lower stakes did sometimes benefit the series and I think even the comedy was some of the best the franchise ever produced.
Also side note. When Dragon Ball did in fact have higher stakes and things got serious it felt really epic. The scene where Goku went to fight against King Piccolo after Drinking the Water is still one of my favorites in the entire series.

Dragon Ball has higher Stakes as it's harder to get the dragon balls.
Dragon Ball Z made it easy to get the dragon balls and made it easy to travel through space and created a second set of Dragon Balls. Dragon Balls in Z are used to reset all consequences and removed most of the tension.
Most of the formula for later arcs came from the king piccolo arc.
Vegeta has some of the worst character development in Dragon Ball because he constantly goes through regression.
If Piccolo wasn't a major villain in Dragon Ball his character Arc would be less impactful.
Also fights were more complex in the original Dragon Ball as they had a far more limited skill set.
Characters couldn't spam generic ki balls that never do anything, and all the techniques generally became more generic and Bland.
    Dragon Ball has Superior pacing.
The overuse of Transformations ultimately affected Dragon Ball Z negatively.
Tien was generally more complex than any of the villains in later Z,and legitimately has the best character Arc.
The first Arc of Dragon Ball has morally grey main characters to a greater extent than any of its later arcs.

I feel like with dragon ball the progression of over coming adversities was a lot more steady and cohesive as well as it felt like characters were a lot more fleshed out to build a connection towards. By the time Z came out, it became heavily focused on power scaling and even into super, The Saiyans were carrying the wins after the biggest battles.
Which is not necessarily bad, but it does kind of out shadow every other character in the series that we would like to see shine. It wouldn’t be until years after Z was done that I could appreciate what the OG Dragonball had done as far character development with, where as DBZ I loved a lot more for what the action brought to the table. The main problem going forward is what exact adversities are they gonna come up with that isn’t going to feel cheap and convoluted to reach new heights because it seems like they’ve already reached their peaks as far as scaling goes now and you can’t necessarily go back the goofiness that was in DB that Daima now is trying to cash in on now.

After rewatching Dragon Ball, the martial arts and techniques in Dragon ball are way better. After Radditz the martial arts animation in Z was limited as the characters got faster and more powerful. Movies like Dead Zone , Worlds strongest, Tree of might had some good martial arts scenes. Also Dragon ball isn’t as censored as Z. They have a lot of adult sexual themes in Z, a lot of gun play, nudity. Also more comedy . I’m still picking DBZ but it’s a very close.

Both are fantastic and they’re both part of the same story so I don’t really like comparing the two.
Something The Act Man said about DBZ that stuck with me which I think encapsulates the illusion of the “high stakes” point about DBZ. Basically: High Stakes does not (necessarily) equal high drama. And when I think back to OGDB, the Earth or the Galaxy or the universe didn’t need to be at risk for the tension and stakes to be high. It just was because of great storytelling and character dynamic.

I prefer to think of DB and DBZ as one whole story like the manga was instead of two separate shows, just like how I prefer to think of the Saiyan Saga and Frieza Saga as one epic continuous arc instead of two separate ones. Honestly, DB kinda became DBZ sooner than it actually did with the King Piccolo Saga since the tone and stakes became drastically different from that point onward in the story. Sure, Goku was still a kid at that point and hadn't learned of his alien heritage, but tone-wise it and the Piccolo Junior Saga still feel more like DBZ than OG Dragon Ball.

Yeah in my opinion, it clears (especially when comparing the anime, where Dragon Ball Z becomes Drag-on Ball Z midway through the Freeza Arc).
In terms of villains, I really dig the Red Ribbon Army as a cohort, Tao Pai Pai & Tenshinhan and prefer them over guys like Freeza, Cell, etc.
It has better story arcs too, like if I were to make a cohesive list it’d look something like:
    1. Red Ribbon
    2-4. the three Tenkaichi Budokais
    5. Saiyan
    6. Hunt for the Dragon Balls
    7. Freeza
    8. Piccolo Daimao
    9. Cell

Dragon Ball Z is only weaker because of the Buu saga. Up until Cell's end it was a straight up banger.
Even the Saiyaman Saga was good.
    Buu saga was worse because:
    - Toriyama got freed from supervisors and turned out isn't actually that good writer on his own.
    - Too much fucking around, or filler even in the MANGA
    - This is where Super Saiyan forms became a joke, where even Gotenks and Trunks could turn into SSJ1 coming out from the womb.
Said that, still miles better than Super but still.

Read the manga as a kid, and as I am sure everyone knows, it is just one long story known as DB. Even before watching the anime, I felt that the biggest mistake of the manga was the introduction of Saiyans, I much preferred the earthbound mysteries and more grounded and inventive fights. The shift of course is only more noticeable in the Anime since it is named differently, but also I was a lot older when I finally did watch the anime, and I had a lot harder time watching Z, whereas DB was just a funfest, and surprisingly the fillers in that one that weren't in the manga, only added to the story.

Dragon Ball is superior to Z on the simple grounds that it played to Akira Toriyama's strengths as a writer, by keeping things fairly grounded, it allowed for things to develop naturally over time. until he got lazy and did the three year time skip to get to Goku vs Piccolo Jr as quickly as possible. Once that happened, the natural flow of a story developing was disrupted and never fixed. Why show actual character development when you can skip it. Hell most of the reason why I love the filler of Dragon Ball Z that most people despise because the filler actually FIXES DBZ's pacing problem by forcing it to slow down.

    • @alphadios2003
      @alphadios2003 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

To be honest i think DBZ didn't had enough filler. That's where Super is ... well, superior even to the very DBZ. DBS has some good quality slice of life fillers. For DBZ to be awesome we would've needed the following fillers: a few more episodes traveling to Namek, some adventures here and there, more than just a fake Namek and an ark full of refugees. After Son Goku's victory over Frieza we got that Garlic Jr filler arc that was kinda boring. Instead we should've seen some Son Goku space adventures. The scenes with Vegeta searching for him through the universe were good, but underdeveloped. An entire story arc of Goku adventures with Vegeta arriving only after he leaves would've been awesome. This would also serve as a reason for Goku and his SSJ to be a name to be reckoned with in the galaxy. After the Cell arc, the Afterlife arc could've been extended beyond that tournament, because i am pretty sure the other world can be a place with unexplored areas and potential adventures, because not only the dead dwell there. The same can be said about Gohan's high school times, there was potential for more teenage life episodes and also for some OG Dragon Ball like content for Goten.

I watched Dragon Ball the first time recently, and I enjoyed the greater amount of adventure, but I had hoped my problems with Dragon Ball Z had not developed, only for me to find it's where the problems began. It's also clear they at least thought the core audience grew up too much, and aspects of the world changed, only for some to come back later. Despite that, I felt the lack of adventure and post Frieza power creep ruined the pacing of DBZ for me. So I ended up enjoying Dragon Ball more, even though it still had the useless side character syndrome and Goku always saving the day every time.

I'd put OG Dragon Ball at the same level of Kai up until the end of the Cell saga with Z well below. The Buu saga is another aspect that drags down Z and Kai, it's just not as strong as previous sagas in my opinion.

I think the success of DBZA is testament to how good dbz would be if it didn't take itself so seriously

You said kid goku in og db only had one life or death fight but thats not true, mercenary tao thought he had killed him and goku had to recover from
The fight and reach a new level in order to beat him, way before the king piccolo chapter

OG dragonball was a show where there was actual adventures. Where Goku starts with nothing and ends with family and friends.

I prefer the original DB. But then again, there is no real distinction in Toriyama's manga. It's one continuous story. So if I have to pick a favourite part of the entire story, there's some overlap. Toriyama's writing was at its best from Demon King Piccolo up until the Saiyan arc.

I think Dragon Ball is better than Dragon Ball Z. And my argument is that in Dragon Ball they have really good tactical fights and it's not only about pure strength. I have the feeling that in the Android Saga that spirit got lost...

yeah no the demon king piccolo arc isn't even top 3 when it comes to original dragon ball, at best it's better that the red ribbon army saga (debatable) but if you think it is better than ANY of the tenkaichi budokai you are just objectively wrong

One of the things I’ll always give toriyama his props for is how he was able to pull a 360 in tone with dragonball, you don’t ever notice how the tone switches from an adventure gag manga to a serious action fighting manga. He was able to truly pull it off and other manga/anime series’s usually struggle to pull it off or if they do it’s noticeable.

Mostly... YES. Yes indeed it is. And this is not the "old is gold" geezer mentality. Dragon Ball is objectively better than Z! If Boo Saga didn't existed, then it would be way harder to say this truth. But as it is right now i will say it LOUD and CLEAR: DB > DBZ!!!

Dragon Ball is far more consistent than original DBZ. Dragon ball Z has far higher highs and lower lows. Tho DBZ Kai (not including the final chapters) might beat original Dragon Ball

Dragonballl is better because they don't ever mention power levels. If you cut all of the power level discussion out of Z it would be half the run-time. Dragonball is obviously better because it was written as a stand alone story, whereas Z was written to sell to over energized young boys. I don't like how Z focuses on fights, I don't like how it continues forever with escalating power. I don't like the repetitive villains. Dragonball is a pure original story written by somebody out of pure love and inspiration, Z is a cash grab

I'm afraid that your opinion is biased by the factor that you watched dragon ball Z first. If you had watched dragon ball first, you would realize that all the great things that you love and surprised you in Z, were already there. Is not the story of Goku becoming a man. It was the story of Goku. Although it is still creative till the Namek saga, Z is nothig more than the repetition of the same trops and motives of the first part of the story and to me is just a bunch of repetitions, transformations, power levels and fusions beyond any sense.

so dbz will always be better than dragon ball because of Vegeta

Dragon Ball Z took a lot more risks, especially with his character development as a Saiyan, as a father, as a friend, comrade, as a mentor and guide for the next generation. It stepped up in every way.

Dragon Ball is much better tbh. Z is very good but …. Dragon ball has heart and soul. It has focus and is extremely close to the manga. Dragon ball Z is all over the place, pacing, movies, the lack of martial arts focus, the constant power level focus. Dragon ball is much better. I think super is as well.
