It'll be interesting to see when (and if) the One Ring card is pulled, whether it has any noticible affect on prices for the sealed product. Same with the rest of the serialised cards, but at least with them there is decent number (1900 total? I assume 300 Elven, 700 Dwarven and 900 Human)
Are these types of cards in past releases tracked in any kind of way? So people know (generally) when all of a certain card has been found and cannot be in any unopened boxes?

What happened with lost legends was a perspective change. People saw too many bad legends cards opened, and the idea of pulling a rudy of pendrell vale was supplanted with pulling a glyph of rudy.
what?!? people didnt appreciate opening a case of DMU and getting TWO Kobolds as your lost legends...personally should have just remained lost! For every Karakas, Angus, Mana Drain, there was 1000 of worthless commons.

I obviously can't prove they did, but did Wizards or Hasbro ever prove they took steps to make sure their employees couldn't? With how little effort they put into QA, I'd actually be more surprised to find out that they did try to prevent it.

I think you're vastly overestimating how make Lord of the rings fans are going to buy this thing Rudy. As always wizards is doing thier damnedest to shoot themselves in the foot. Thier doing the reimagined for a modern audience thing and if we've learned anything from that LOTR Amazon show is that the fans don't want something that's not book accurate. The serialized cards will help but I'm guessing based on the price most magic fans will wait for commander masters. Be really careful tying too much capital on LOTR because it could very well be the best baulders gate. Just this Timmies thoughts. Maybe in 24 months I'll look like a moron. We'll see!
I know several LotR fans who are pissed at what they're doing to Aragorn, so that will hurt the product to a degree from that side of the fandom.
I think it was intentional bait to get people talking about the set, rather than it going over as "Oh, another crossover set. Meh". MtG players don't really care for them, and if you're a fan of the other thing, I mean, there's better merch for the money involved.
Honestly, it's a little frustrating, but it's not the end of the world. Race-swapping irks me, but you can't just _replace_ a main character with a new OC and not spark _more_ outrage.
On the other hand, the price will be low due to dissatisfaction so I can get 4x in foil for my artist binder (hopefully!).

I don't know how many other TCGs did the 1/1 but the Inuyasha TCG did this with their sets starting with the 4th set (I believe). They inserted two 1 of 1's per set. This continued until the 10th and final set, Tensei. But they did include other cards to satisfy the value of the box. The 1 of 1's are not the only chase cards in the sets. I believe 'til this day most of them have not surfaced and I believe only one set has had both 1/1 pulled.

One thing I'll say about the LotR set is that my best friend, who is just marginally interested in Magic (he's just played with me a handful of times) is *huge* into LotR and was very excited for this, and I was excited that it might get him more into Magic. Then I told him what the pricing was and he was basically just like well, I guess I'm not getting that. They're hoping this set will get a bunch of LotR fans into Magic, which I'm sure it will - but only the rich ones.
(Yeah, I know he can buy singles, but buying singles is difficult for someone who knows very little about Magic. What cards do you buy? At most he might get a precon.)

What I wanna know is how much will the sealed market tank when the one of one is confirmed opened?
I think excitement will die down fairly fast regardless of if it's pulled. Holding these sealed is gonna scare me but definitely plan on grabbing a few.
My guess on what is going to happen:
- the product will sell well: from a gameplay perspective it will be stuffed with must have staples*, and LotR is a beloved IP** quite on theme with old MtG; moreover, at the beginning there will be the chase for the serialized One Ring.
- the box with One Ring will only be allowed to hit distribution after good sales figures are already in, because the moment it is found, the chase is over and sales of Collector boxes will take a big hit, even though the special Sol Rings will help maintain value. So the long-term value of sealed CB will be linked the card being found or not.
- a lot of packs will be opened meaning a lot of singles will hit the market, but the fact that borrowed IPs may not see reprints along the line could create a sort of "new RL", which should somewhat protect the prices from falling too much, keeping sealed product more investible than other modern MtG releases.
*WotC however may shoot themselve in the foot again with their stupidly crammed released schedule: Commander players are a huge driver in moving sales, so LotR boxes and Commander Masters could end up cannibalizing their respective sales with customers with limited disposable income being forced to make a decision between two high-priced products.
**LotR could bring in additional casual customers, but WotC could screw it up by being woke imbeciles and print stuff like black Galadriel, transgender Boromir and female Legolas, driving LotR fans away the way Amazon did with their Rings of Power series.
*And with the amount of people not opening the boxes I dare not think what'd occur if the 1/1 is in a box that someone has the intention of never opening ~*
Rudy does bring up a good point about the whole single serial numbered card of The One Ring being a marketing ploy. Only time will tell if it does what Hasbro has intended to do to make the LOTR set a success.

I WOULD agree that the LotR set would be a success story based purely off the brand alone and the enthusiasm of that fanbase, but we already have a recent similar scenario to look to to prove that is not the case: Amazon's The Rings of Power. The LotR fanbase is very passionate and cares a great deal about faithfulness to the source material and the magnificent world that Tolkien created, and Rings of Power chose to play extremely fast and loose with the lore, and was not at all representative of what the fans wanted. The end result was that it was the biggest flop in TV history, despite the absurd amount of money Amazon pumped into it's production, marketing, and review manipulation.
This MtG product will be that story all over again. Already there is massive discontent and controversy around the disrespect that WotC has shown the source material. There have been attempts to stifle the backlash and cover it up, but the sales will speak for themselves, especially at the absurd prices WotC is asking. This set will flop, I'm not touching it with a ten-foot pole and won't be buying anything from it now or ever in the future.
Keep in mind that crossovers like this work based upon the loyalty and passion the fans of the other property bring to the table. If you do not do that fanbase's IP justice then why even bother using the IP in the first place? This is purely political, and politics don't sell. Giving the fans what they want, what they loved about their franchise in the first place, is what sells, and WotC has refused to do that.

The cards we have seen are mediocre from a power and flavor standpoint and the cringy woke washing of the setting (ie the supposed selling point) will ensure to turn off a good chunk of the people that would have picked that set just for that.
I hope Rudy gets the one ring, in his sealed displays and he will never know and neither will we. That would be the perfect ending to a 1of1 card.
I think its good they put the serialized sol rings in the collector product, if they didn't I dont believe the product would do well long term. The Sol rings will carry the product, the chance at the "one ring" is just glitter on top because in all probability it will not happen to you.

Imagine they mess it up and the 1/1 card pack gets released and found early. That would crash the set's collector box market hard. No chase anymore, no trying to find the million dollar pringled card.

I agree with you Rudi, the Lotr will be a home run. I am an MTG fan, since way back in the nineties, and I don't buy any MTG product. Well not since I was 13 years old. I'm also a Lotr fan, so am quite interested in this set. I was on the fence, and decided in the end that I wouldn't buy any product. Then I heard about the one ring, and my decision changed, am now very much considering buying a box, just to join in with the chase.
I've shared this because, there will be people that usually buy boxes that will buy this set, there will be fans of lotr that don't even play MTG that will buy this set. And then there will be people like me, that never ever bought a box, that might just be tempted to buy one this time. Well played Hasbro well played. Thematically the one ring is hilariously on point!

Something that is interesting Is that the 1 of 1 serialized ring will be available in collector booster boxes, collector booster packs and in the gift bundle that includes the collector booster. That means the 1 of 1 ring could pop up in multiple locations. Either a box, a single collector booster sold at Walmart/target etc or in the gift bundle.
Which leads to my next question:
Will all 3 of these products be released on the same day? I think it would be bad for hasbro/the product if someone pulls the 1 of 1 card on the first day of release. Or even first week. And they know this. Could they possibly delay the product being shipped that the card is in so its opened months/years down the road?
I know the value/hype of the product is not solely based on the 1 of 1 card. Lots of other serialized cards. But the hype train could definitely calm down by a lot if it's opened early. Well if the person that opens it even announces it anyway.

Also, we saw a lot of retail packaged product end up in that landfill. Imagine this oh so special one ring ends up in a landfill because it was at a walmart or target and they never sold the overpriced individually packaged collector pack it was in. So they wrote them off as a loss and off to the landfill they go.
WotC will know exactly in which box the serialized 1/1 ring will be. I feel like that box will hit the market once good sales have been reported, probably through one of the premium LGS as a publicity stunt.

It’s hard for me to speculate what’s gonna shake out. I’ve always liked the idea of investing into different types of card games. I’ve been picky, and don’t do it often. I am a fan of LotR and used to be a MTG player back in the day. I’ve chosen to very mildly invest in it. No idea if it’ll be illustrious or not. I just will be happy to open up some packs, see if I pull some cool/rare singles. And hold onto some sealed product. The only thing I am certain of, is that people are gonna have to keep a VERY close eye on the market for this one. Good luck, and have fun.
I think these chase cards and serialized is a good idea. If they would get rid of the 4 different boxes available. We don't need draft, set, collector and Jumpstart booster boxes. There are strong cards being printed, but when there's immediately 6 versions at release, there's no value. They need to go back to just draft boxes and then insert the serialized and maybe alternate art into those. Look at Battle for Zendikar cycle, Kaladesh cycle and Amonkhet cycle and their lottery cards

I think you're over estimating how many LoTR fans will pick up MTG over this. We're talking about a fan base that torpedoed Amazon because they didn't put beards on the lady dwarves. This fandom cares about one thing and only one thing, the accurate portrayal of the books across mediums. I suspect there will be as many, or more, people leaving MTG than joining over how WoTC has portrayed key characters.
Given the super premium pricing this set needs to fundamentally warp the Modern format, or be so chock full of EDH goodies that people can't resist, to be successful.
Interesting comment regarding making the Lord of the Rings set a Christmas set, especially considering Hasbro’s lackluster holiday sales bringing down the quarter and further tanking the stock price……Maybe Rudy should be considered as replacement for Wizard’s Chief strategist….

Though our group can afford it, we will not buy LOTR and Commander Masters products. I will wait and buy some singles. I will not fall into the trap of Wizards Gimmicks like the Lost Legends, Serialized cards, and the One Ring. With Wizards track record, you just can't trust them. Cocks will hold on to the One Ring and wait to the sales die down and maybe put it in a collectors box. What will happen when Wizards reprints the One Ring 3 to 5 years from now??? 1 week ago I was in my trading card shop of trust(I got a small pokemon WOTC collection from back in the days I follow the news but invest rarely), I only stood infront of the MTG section and took a closer look at the newer booster packs. Owner turned is head to me and said "Don't do it". I guess he's caring about his customers.

Lord of the Rings already existed as a TCG. I have no vested interests one way or another but, I think this release is going to sell well at first and then do a deep tanking. 3-4 Weeks of excitement and then it turns into a Baulder´s Gate.
