Red Sky Morning Recorded 2013 Folk Alliance - Toronto.
Gangstagrass are musical pioneers: fusing traditional stylings of bluegrass with the rebellious expression of hip-hop. While these two genres may seem an unlikely mix, the resulting sound is irrefutably addictive. Heavy backbeats intertwined with ornate banjo rolls provide a powerful chug, setting the stage for skillful rap and twangy melodic hooks.
The founder of the group, Rench, grew up with the sounds of country radio stations filling his home. At the same time, grade school recesses were spent embracing hip-hop culture. His friends were break dancers and rappers, endlessly enthusiastic about sharing their favourite rap albums. Instead of resisting either influence, he embraced them both. As a musician he approached these sounds in a way no one had done before. Taking his folk expertise, he reached out to established rappers to sample on his tracks. From this, he created the original recordings: “Rench Presents: Ganstagrass.” It didn’t take long for hundreds of thousands of downloads to occur shortly after its free internet release. Their new genre of music was introduced even further when their song “Long Hard Times to Come” was placed as the theme song of the television series JUSTIFIED, a track which was EMMY nominated for “Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music”.
Gangstagrass believes that music has no limitations. With their confidence to be innovative, they break away from what’s already been done. By bridging rural and urban music, they expand perspectives, defying the pre-conceived notions of either culture. As Rench puts it, “I want to provide the soundtrack for a wave of cultural miscegenation that will let us all party together at last!”
Lyrical content is evocative of both cultures. Hip-hop represents a tough, self-made survival, while bluegrass tells a lonely story. The result is country appeal delivered with swagger. Their fresh sound is attention grabbing, garnering a truckload of buzz. With professional command of the instrumentation, and a slick, rhythmic, verbal flow, they provide a quality that matches the clout. - Julia Stead

I had an incident in my therapy group a while ago dealing with race and division and it interestingly enough the topic turned to musical taste and culture. The following week I played several songs on my phone by Gangstagrass and completely made my point. Underneath the idea of this being great music (IMO) I also love the concept of building bridges, not walls!

I first heard them, I was like, no fkn way does this work, it's unreal, then I saw the video, as they were switching, genres, bad ass, fresh, even tho its years old, it was new to me 2021, im 54 and i grew up in the 80"s, but ain't to hip on thug wrap, hookers, guns, money and killing, and the drugs, ignorant music, but this is music that touches the soul, sends a message, we put rap lyrics in a bluegrass genre, or the other way around,
the is diverse about common sense, either your right, or your not. they proved that with the collaboration of the sound and the timing of the words, and the mix. My hats off, solid 10 !!!! hope they keep doin it....
I also grew up in the 80s, and I also love this band. NOT ALL RAP music is ignorant music. Not everyone likes every genre. Judge it song by song, if it's not for you, fine. A lot of those songs have good messages. Just because it's categorized one genre, doesn't mean all songs are mindless, ignorant and negative. JS
Finally back to real rap with real instrumentals. And oh how I do love that blue grass sound.

My friends don't seem to get it but I was raised by my grandparents in Alabama in the 70s and I listened to bluegrass gospel and everything else all the way to easy e and nwa. I love this group. This is awesome.this group should be one of the most famous rap groups of all time right now as far as I'm concerned. This is a concert I would most certainly pay to see.i love this music.

When you listen to the music the protagonists of traditional Bluegrass songs were just as "gangster" and hard core as any subject of a Hip Hop song. Both strains of music are about the poor, the powerless, men who will die in the streets, hollers, or prisons. Men who only have their pride , two hands and a gun. Men who will run whiskey or drugs and who won't be insulted.
The traditional music of the British Isles and Africa fused in the mountains, small towns, and forests of North America, giving birth to the Blues, Bluegrass, Hip Hop, and early rock and country. The urban has it's roots in the rural.
