On my first trip to Ireland in 1988, it was just after St. Patrick's Day. There were many Irish musicians on the plane returning home from their gigs in the US. As we got closer to Ireland, they started breaking out the instruments just like this. It was the best flight I ever had.
Imagine a communication between the pilot and the ATC and they hear the music in the background "Hey, if you don't mind, what's that sound I'm hearing over your radio?" "Music, tower." "Oh, okay."

I was at my friends fathers house one time, and there was a bulgarian man there who didn't speak english at all. But he played the guitar, and so did I. And even though we couldn't understand eachother at all, we did variations on songs, and showed off different musical theory during our playing together, and we smiled so much and understood that "language" very well. That's why I think music is real art. You can be from two very different cultures and not understand eachother, but music connects anyways.
You should read Schopenhauer on the subject. He has written extensively on music, both about music itself, the way it relates to other artistic disciplines (poetry, painting, literature) and to art in general.
Something about these moments reflect the very best of society. How a large room full of people who don't know each other can join together in song and find happiness in the midst of what would otherwise have been a frustrating situation. I just watched the "greatest saxophone battle of all time" on that NYC subway and felt the same way then. It reminds me that we can find common ground through one of the things that generally makes all human beings happy: MUSIC. Both that saxophone battle and this video reflect the best parts of our humanity in that way.

Somehow this underlines the fact that music is one of humanity's greatest achievements. Connecting people since the first caveman bumped a bone against a stick.
So the alpha caveman grabs the musician banging bones and sticks, tells him that he's a really good stick and bone banger and he's gonna be staying there playing from now on. They'll give him some scraps to eat everyday. If he tries to leave, it's rock in the head. Thus was the Entertainment Industry born.
it's thought that the first way people made allies was to dance and show they were friendly. And eventually the singing followed, and after that instruments to accompany the singing. I think that's why instinctually people let their guard down and let loose when they hear music. it's an ancient sign of peace.
I have listened to this so many times. My 3rd grade classes are mesmerized. "Is that an airport?" "What kind of music is that?" They don't understand the song, but they understand the high vibes.
I stayed in Donegal for two weeks. Went to a remote pub. Quite a few people there. I stood near a table where 3 chaps were seemingly just enjoying their pints and having a chat. Then one of them drew a fiddle from under the table, and started to play. Shortly after he was joined by his friends with an accordion and tin whistle of sorts. Within 2 minutes they were surrounded by everyone in the pub, smiling, clapping and cheering. The atmosphere was just incredible. One of the most amazing experiences of my life. @aimee curry American bluegrass music is a relatively new genre, only emerging in the 1950s with banjo players like earl scruggs and his 3 finger technique. It is a direct descendant of Appalachian "old time fiddle" music. Old time music is in turn a descendant of the music of Irish and Scottish fiddle music wedded with the music of slaves that were kidnapped and brought to the southern US. They brought with them the memories of the akonting, a string instrument with a skin head found in west africa. Enslaved musicians then used the materials available to them to create gourd banjos, which during the 1800s were "discovered" by white musicians and slowly morphed into modern banjos. Immigrants who then returned to Ireland brought with them tenor banjos, which became irish 4 string banjos and were incorporated into their trad music alongside the fiddles, whistles, and bodhrans. The bouzouki, which is seen in this video as well is not originally an Irish instrument, but a Greek one that was incorporated into the tunes of Irish music. Essentially most of the instruments of Ireland are not originally Irish, and certainly none of the "American" instruments are native. Ireland mostly just put new instruments into their musical tradition, but all of American music is a conglomeration of music and instruments from around the world.

The magic of this scenario: 1: The musical talent. 2: the impromptu backup singers in the form of the 3 girls behind the singer. 3: The old man desperately attempting to adopt stoic disapproval ultimately let down by his feet proving the music has taken over. 4: The airport departure lounge setting, with music breaking down the barriers of interpersonal indifference uniting a group of strangers embracing the beauty of music erasing the inconvenience of a delayed flight. Ultimately, this video is the embodiment of perception dictating the experience of life. A lesson to us all that no matter what life throws at us we can always make the most of it and live a great life!

On my first trip to Ireland in 1988, it was just after St. Patrick's Day. There were many Irish musicians on the plane returning home from their gigs in the US. As we got closer to Ireland, they started breaking out the instruments just like this. It was the best flight I ever had.
Imagine a communication between the pilot and the ATC and they hear the music in the background
"Hey, if you don't mind, what's that sound I'm hearing over your radio?"
"Music, tower."
"Oh, okay."

@@MasumiSeike (story time) whenever a bard rolls a Nat20 in my group the GM ALWAYS does something over the top for the most mundane things for any check as a running "joke", and it's really fucking annoying at this point, it rarely effects anything but still. he does this because he passionately hates bards for basically charisma checking him at every turn on a campaign in our old group, so he does this every time he's a been the GM since, but now he is the only one left willing to be the GM in the group for the longest time. it's really annoying but basically tradition at this point to do it.
@@aohu7505 wow.. if it really annoys you, you should talk about that.

One is a Tiefling that grew up well and unwillingly landed in Aventurien. My other Bard got his Memories altered, his Magic Flute stolen, is currently in Barovia and is pissed.
With both I kind of go in the Charisma checks but for different reasons. The Tiefling because he wants to make other happy and basicly tries to find friends.
The other one tries to talk his way out and doesn't care he he needs to lie or use people if they get in his way. On the other hand when ever I roll a Nat1 in Performance with this Character, I have to sing the Narwal Song 🤣

Actually not just bards, at leats Lvl.40 bards, with very high charisma skills, they just charmed a whole airport:)
That's a cool story. Thanks for sharing 👍
You should read Schopenhauer on the subject. He has written extensively on music, both about music itself, the way it relates to other artistic disciplines (poetry, painting, literature) and to art in general.
I’ve been an artist all my life until I retired and I cherish that gift, but I think music is the greatest gift of all.
lovely story ☺️
For me it's the same with math
I'm an Englishman, and I absolutely love Ireland and its people!
I could not have said it better myself and couldn't agree with you more!

That's so wholesome💗
That’s what it’s all about!!🙌🙌❤️ Let passion be your priority. Money comes naturally for those with good intentions:)
Then you will never want for money, build that skill and people will rush to pay your tab and get your gas and cover your food.
Yes this is the way to go! Do it for your audience, not for yourself and you’ll have all the riches you need.
I feel ya, I really do. but some some those people couldn't be arsed with the noise, if they had handed out a few cans along with the music then perhaps. but for the old folks, they didn't want to party they just wanted to rest. sorry to be buzz killington, but you cant do this
Somehow this underlines the fact that music is one of humanity's greatest achievements. Connecting people since the first caveman bumped a bone against a stick.
Absolutely, well said
Greatest and oldest. A strong contender for the oldest artform.
In societies and culture where there is no formal Math. There is music!

This is so cool because you can really tell from this that Irish immigrants had a huge impact on early American music, such a bluegrass and folk
I have no idea why I just spent 5-10 mins typing out a history report in a YT comment section

The magic of this scenario:
1: The musical talent.

This quality I have a hard time defining or even giving a name but the best I can come up with is freedom of imagination. And that freedom of imagination bleeds into all aspects of life having an effect on everything in ways that we can't necessarily see all right but only when you look closer. If that makes any sense. I have not been back since my honeymoon but hope to return some day sooner than later as I may not have all that many years left. I do hope you visit or relocate there someday as well. I don't think anyone's life is complete without visiting the place that some called the Emerald Isle. Shame it rains so much there! But it's a small price to pay
I always say music is medicine for the soul and brings people together ❤

My only experience in Ireland was an airport, in uniform returning from Afghanistan. Troop commander set a limit of two drinks. The people at the bar and the workers in the duty free (who had set up sampling tables) were pretty sure they meant that we were only allowed to pay for two. It was a wonderful experience which could have only been made better by some spontaneous music like this. As it was I returned to the plane feeling pretty tipsy, and I don’t know if I paid for any.
That’s a wonderful story to be sure ! Thank you for you’re service, it’s a fine thing you did and I know that’s why you, more than likely, didn’t pay for a single drop. Blessings to you, and thank you again.

I love how even the people who don’t seem really into it are still tapping their feet. Music is ALWAYS good!
Music is, by it's own very nature, a universal language
Tapping feet betray decent hearts, like it or not. Keep the mouth shut, except for a smile, and let the body speak for you.
I get super emotional watching this vid, not just because of the beautiful version of that song, but also because the atmosphere in the moment.
That feeling of uplifting, festive joy that everyone is enjoying, despite the circumstances is enough to melt a broken heart of a man.
The fact that even if our existence is futile, even if it all seems pointless and stupid, there are those moments where even those thoughts don't matter.
The moments where you choose to say "f*ck it, I'm gonna sing along and embrace it"
So i did, and cried...alot

I was in a bar in kinsale and above all the revelry l heard the immortal words "for the love of God get me another fucking pint ".
Or of course the immortal comment of the barkeep (bartender) after last call and when the lights come on of "For God's Sake, don't you people have homes to go to?" I keep laughing when I see Pres. Joe Biden, who looks exactly like my mentor barkeep in Boston (he was an immigrant from Mayo) when I started at age 21. They look EXACTLY alike.

My first time in Dublin, got off the bus and walked over the road with two friends intent on our first real pint of guiness. Walked into this pub that looked like it had sawdust on the floor. There was about 12 people all with musical instruments and one guy at the bar.
The chat stopped and someone was singing.. then someone else a solo on the guitar. They had whistles and a violin and other instruments Ive forgot.. it was amazing. Turn out they were all regular punters. First guiness was like drinking dishwater.. yuk. I persevered. by the third I loved the stuff. What a night. What memories. Great people.
