Why the 3DS/Wii U Era was Better than the Switch Era

  • I discuss why I personally prefer the Wii U & 3DS Era (2013-2016) over the current Switch Era (2017-2020).
    The Nintendo Switch is turning 4 years old soon, and is coming close to the same age of the Wii U when it was discontinued. So I think this comparison is more than fair at this point in time.

      @M64bros What i mean by Satoru Iwata is the joyful playfulness he brought to everything. All the personality on their systems was heavily influenced by Satoru Iwata. Just look at the Wii U interface. When you boot up the Wii U you're presented with hundreds of different Miis playing different messages from around the world. From the awesome Miiverse and the amazing social aspect. Even how well the Nintendo eShop interface was presented on that system. From the awesome music that plays in the background and if you have the volume up on the GamePad they both come together to play one harmony. Organising your games in proper folders. Remember how much more personal Nintendo Directs used to be ? I'll never forget 2014 Reggie vs Iwata.
      In contrast, the switch is completely void of any personality. it's completely bland with only two black or white themes. No music, no StreetPass, no Miiverse, no 3DS themes, no nothing. The e-shop is an absolute joke. What a laggy and unorganized mess. The Joy-Cons are cheap and nasty. Joy-Con drift! Never discounting games and being completely anti consumer ( remember Nintendo Selects ? ) Charging a yearly subscription to access their older content when the Nintendo Wii U had the Virtual Console where you could purchase older games at very reasonable prices.
      Nintendo has become corporate. They have become a profit driven first company. They are forgetting all the magical things that make them Nintendo. Nintendo's current president just doesn't get it.

      @@lukebrady65 Yeah, all that stuff really doesn't nostalgia blind me pal.
      There were also DMCA takedowns when him and Reggie were still around as well so don't just pretend everything was beautiful and pretty back then.
      Also the real reason why they are porting the Wii U games to the switch is so that way a bunch of new gen fans can try them out because back then they weren't able to get a Wii U.
      Truthfully, It's the DMCA legal team in Japan that's making those decisions since Japan has strict copyright rules, not just for Nintendo but for other companies as well.
      Nintendo still cares about his legacy. Back then. They were a bunch of people weaponizing his death and blaming his death. But thankfully after the Mario movie credit scene and some smart Nintendo fans telling those types of people to knock it off, it seems that thankfully the weaponizing Iwata's death seemed to thankfully die down.
      I still play on my 3DS and my Wii U still to this day but you still cannot deny the fact that not everything was beautiful and pretty during that era.

    • @lukebrady65
      @lukebrady65 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @M64bros You're clearly not following the conversation. The point I'm making is the reason all of these things were so awesome is because of Satoru Iwata influence making sure these things were implemented on their systems and their current president Shuntaro Furukawa not given a crap about any of these things.
      Who said Nintendo doesn't care about Satoru Iwata legacy ?

    The 3DS/Wii U Era felt like a huge party. Everybody was welcomed and almost every major release was anticipated and celebrated. Nintendo's ads with Reggie and Iwata were super creative. The directs, the unbelievable hype behind Smash 4, the 3D Debut of mainline Pokemon. It all just felt like this grand new venture into something special. I'm glad Nintendo's doing better than before financially, but hopefully a future console generation can live up to that big party feeling.

      @@pink-_-621 Sure, it had good memories but you cannot deny the fact it has massive flaws, the year of Luigi cost them $457 million, the Wii U had horrible marketing, terrible advertisements, cringy commercials, Not everyone was able to get one, We lost Iwata during that era, Star Fox zero, Metro prime federation Force, animal crossing amiibo festival, games locked that require you to use amiibo, Mario tennis ultra smash and so much mnore. Sure the switch had it's flaws but it didn't have any behind the scenes problems like the Wii U and 3DS era, Also nowadays the Wii U is kind of a pointless console to purchase along with the 3DS, nowadays the switch is doing a lot better.
      There are classic games out there that you can play with or without the switch online membership and Nintendo has improved their classic games ever since, Metroid Prime remastered, pikmin 1 and 2, Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, links awakening and miitopia.

    A combination of factors made the wii u/3ds era more special to me:
    1-The first HD debuts of nintendo IPs, and their first portable games with 128 bit quality graphics.
    2- The systems launched in the middle of the reboot era, with familiar faces like kid icarus, pikmin, luigi' mansion and starfox returning, aside from all the stuff they were bringing back from their classic era
    3-It was the first era where social media played a huge roll. The nintendo directs and rise of nintendo fan youtubers created a feeling of community that helped make each major release an event!

We saw commercials for the Switch and most of them were about some happy family playing on their Switch consoles, then we see the ones for the Wii U and while it still had those kind of commercials, there was also that Super Mario 3D World ad where the guys playing had their house turning into the game itself.

      I will say the Wii U had some cringe ads for the console itself but damn I definitely miss that era of commercials where Nintendo animated stuff over live action. The only equivalent I can think of is that one Odyssey ad where Mario is dancing with real life people but its pretty much just animating a scene from the game so its not as unique or memorable or quirky as the stuff like those Mario Kart ads where real people were racing eachother, or the 3DS announcement trailer with Reggie getting chased. Tbh Nintendo were doing ads kinda like this back in the GameCube days too (even earlier in a couple of examples), but yeah I definitely miss this old style of ad, all the new ones are a shot of a guy in a chill house looking at his tv out of shot then showing the game on the tb

    I agree. Back in the WiiU and 3DS and early Switch era the made detailed and working Games. They allowed exploration in their games and didn't fix every cool glitch the community found, the second they found it. They even had free working online. They worked with the blue ocean strategy and tried to do things that other companies didn't (in a positive way)
    Today there are games like Pokemon Legend Arceus. The have cheap ports like the Booster Course Pass. The patch like every glitch that makes their games fun, the second it is found. In games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe exploration is just forbidden. Lakitu picks up the second you are just one pixel of the track. The online service is paid and doesn't even work that well. They are just doing the same as things other gaming companies now like paid subscriptions and micro transactions.
    They are just a shadow of what they were before, which is just sad.

    The Switch feels so lifeless for lack of a better term. I recently bought another Wii U as my old one had finally bit the dust and I gotta say, the Wii U is such a great console. Look - the Switch being completely portable is nice. To have a console be portable while also having great graphics and decent battery life is impressive. But I love the character that the Wii U has. I love the whole aesthetic.
    Besides, the Switch is so thin, and that's not a very good thing to me. I'd like to say I have small hands, but it gets so uncomfortable to hold a Switch for half the time I could hold a Gamepad for.

    The thing that annoys me the most in this generation are the fans. During the Wii U and 3ds era, there was this sense of community, every new release and reveal, was like we won the lottery. With the Switch, the fandom goes to entitled kids to crazy twiiter mob, comparing Nintendo to EA.
    But the thing that pisses me off the most is the constant begging for ports.
    I'm all in for remakes and remasters, i'm glad Sunshine and Galaxy got a HD treatment and i can't wait for Skyward Sword.
    But the fans has such double standard with them, Skyward Sword HD getting backlash because of price clearly is because is Skyward Sword! Any other Zelda game would be embraced for being 60 dollars. But SS haven't got a remaster yet, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess got their own, am i the only one that thinks is stupid to complain about a first time remaster but begging for a port of a remaster? Charging full price on a remaster is too much, but putting Twilight Princess in the fourth console in a roll is totally fine? I'm not defending SSHD being 60 dollars, but the game is only getting this much backlash because is a Zelda game that a lot of people didn''t liked because of motion controls. People crying about not having any work put on it, are the same complains made towards TPHD until release. Every remaster and remake on the Wii U and 3DS were full price and nobody complained. Every Wii U port were full price, having new stuff or not, nobody complained.
    Prior Nintendo consoles had backwards compatibility and nobody cared, but Switch not having every game ever released is an offense to humanity? And were to even begin with how toxic and disgustting the Smash community has became.
    I think the Switch is a damn fine console but the fact the fans keeping begging for Wii U ports, makes the Switch library be filled with ports instead of original games. I'm all in to bring old games back but there's no need to port everything, if you miss it the first time, the second time, it's on you...
    I don't agree with you about 2020 at all. I prefer getting almost no games that are playable and fun, rather than a broken mess like Cyberpunk. Clearly the pandemic hit not only Nintendo but everybody, it's june and almost nothing big got released in any plataform.

    • @WumbleWasp
      @WumbleWasp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I definitely agree this. I'd say the community is a lot more toxic just because it's a lot larger. The pandemic probably doesn't help either.
      The whole port thing is a huge pet peeve of mine too. I understand why people want ports on Switch, but I also have to question why it's always such a huge deal. I mean, if people really want to play these games, they can. They already exist (even if you have to pirate it). I swear people treat ports as if they are brand new games.
      Somehow Zelda's 35th annivesary is awful because we're not getting half assed $60 ports of already existing remasters of 15-20 year old games. But a brand new remaster (while being overpriced I'll admit) is a problem? I never remember people getting this angry about WW/TPHD. Wii U ports are apparently fine being $60, but Metroid Dread isn't?? I hate the double standards, not that I'm defending the prices.
      The 2020 was more of a rebuttal point. I'm totally fine with getting less games, but there was no transparency from Nintendo last year. We knew nothing they were working on in 2019/early 2020 and the last direct we had for about 1.5 years announced pretty much nothing. It was hard to care for Nintendo in comparison to Sony/Microsoft imo

    • @worm6820
      @worm6820 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I have to disagree, what bugs me most about the switch area is the lack of people who feel like their entitled to quality games, people seem to act like Nintendo is some small studio that’s allowed to charge $60 for cheap games, Nintendo is legitimately as bad as EA at this point, the only difference being game quality, they’re just as greedy and unethical as EA, people need to wisen up and realize they’re being ripped off when they get shoved 2 Pokémon games in their face that are worse than the last 2 for %30 more each +dlc, breath of the wild 2 isn’t gonna make up for their hate of their fan base or how mediocre new horizons or odyssey are, until people stop mindlessly buying almost every game they release they’re gonna keep being this way.
      In summary: feeling you are entitled to games being good at the price point nintendo asks is not a bad thing, start being more critical or Nintendo is only gonna get worse.

    • @pizzaboy5902
      @pizzaboy5902 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I mean just saying. People are getting mad because Nintendo never has a sale on games. Especially when this is just a port. It should be cheaper because it’s not a new one, but instead a port. And we aren’t entitled, we have opinions. Nintendo with Mario 3D super stars basically said “If you cant buy it now, you cant buy it later” they shouldn’t have a limited time game. For anything that’s limited time. It’s should be clothing or food. Not games. Especially when everyone wanted these games. When realistically when those games were released, all combined I could find them cheaper. So if anything you are entitled.

    • @chocov1233
      @chocov1233 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My gut tells me that the pandemic didn't have much to do with the buggy mess Cyberpunk 2077 turned out to be, also, no, Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD released on the Wii U at $39.99 which is $20.00 less than a full price 8th gen game which costs $59.99.
      Edit: Scratch that last point, my memory was failing me.

      @chocov1233 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WumbleWasp It's becoming increasingly difficult for people to get a hold of older games and their remasters, ports, etc. and not everyone wants to resort to piracy or emulation if they don't have to, wouldn't you rather get to buy Ocarina of Time on the Switch eShop for $5 to $10 instead of emulating it on your PC, I definitely would, it also helps that the Switch can easily run these 5th, 6th, and 7th gen games at higher frame rates, higher resolutions, and faster loading times as well as the fact that the games that were once only playable at hope (unless they're emulated) become playable on the go as well which is a huge plus. Also, I'm not saying that ports are better than new games, but I do think that ports are the only way to play older games in long running series for people like me who haven't had a new Nintendo console in almost 2 decades and don't have a way to play these older games besides emulation, and not everyone can run Wii emulators either. Although ports are a good solution, they can't compare to the sheer quantity of the Virtual Consoles, if Nintendo brought those back then it'd instantly solve most of this issue, you might not get to own a cartridge with Twilight Princess HD but you could just download it for $25 off the Virtual Console.

    The Wii U didn’t sold well due to poor marketing and people not being curious enough to try the Gamepad but it was much better than the Switch for a lot of reasons. As stated in this video, there were more original first party titles on the Wii U than on the Switch because the majority of the interesting Switch games that released were ports of Wii U games. Also, for the few games that actually were original, a good chunk of them were disappointing or bad. For example, Kirby Star Allies is a way too easy, unfinished and short game with little to no content. Pokémon Sword and Shield are reskinned 3DS games that manages to be worse than those. 1-2-Switch is literally the worst tech demo I have ever played which is a shame because Wii Sports and Nintendo Land were great games. The Wii U’s superiority over the Switch doesn’t stop there either, it was a bigger gap in terms of graphics quality with the HD for the first time on a Nintendo Console, the controller was much more comfortable to use than the Switch’s one, the Gamepad didn’t had drift, the Wii U had Miiverse as a social media, the Wii U had Netflix, Crunchyroll, TH-cam and an internet browser, it had virtual console and contrarily to the Switch to Wii U gimmick had potential to offer new gameplay experiences. If we factor the 3DS into this then the Switch is even more of a joke.

    Great video man. My main issue with this era is that Nintendo has just become more scummy and lazy with several things. Granted, they have done their fair share of crappy decisions in the Wii U/3DS era and even before that. However this just feels like a whole new level now, honestly at EA levels in some cases. Limited releases, piss poor paid online, full priced ports, lack of game preservation, the switch's boring and uncharismatic look, faulty hardware, and denial of real issues (e.g. Joycon Drift).
    I really don't dislike the switch as we've had some great games, especially in 2017. However it just has so many flaws caused mainly by Nintendo's ego and mindset that they can just get away with anything now as it's selling like hotcakes. I have some hope that they'll pick up the pace at some point as they have some exciting titles in the pipeline even if development of Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4 do look somewhat worrying. Although it'll take more than just original games to fix their ways. You addressed your points well and made some good comparisons. Earned yourself a sub.

This is one great thing we can all do easily to support the systems we love! Spread this message to as many people as you can so our big happy Wii U and 3ds family has fun forever! Awesome video bro just watching today! Recently been following the Wii U to the point where I actually SOLD my Switch OLED in order to buy a Wii U in 2023! It was the only console I never owned. Same with my recently acquired New 2DS XL, 3DS and 3DS XL. Basically in my opinion they do way more than the Switch currently does aka themes to name a few. More importantly I smile more as a 42 year old man playing these older consoles than the next gen stuff and that's pretty sad to admit.
    My Nintendo Wii U Deluxe Black Edition plus Pro Controller and Cable with the 9 best games collection cost in total £191.39 all in for EVERYTHING!!! Sooooooooo cheap!! BARGAIN!!
    Only LEGIT console i've never owned before!!!
    Nintendo Wii U Deluxe Black Edition RRP when first released JUST for the console was £278.06!!! 😱😳
    Even setting the Wii U up was more exciting than the Switch or any other Nintendo console and certainly my Series X and PS5!!
    The Wii U slating which CLEARLY turned out to be UTTER NONSENSE in my opinion having now got one myself. It's like the Rocky movies and more so an example of the current world problem of "The Matrix" as Andrew Tate would say and we are all TOLD WHAT TO LIKE AND NOT LIKE and also WHAT WE SHOULD FOLLOW just like sheep. I love a great underdog story. The Wii U is EXACTLY THAT!

    I’ve always seen it this way: the switch was launched at a point where the mainstream had seem to given up no Nintendo, the Wii U went so unnoticed that people still thought the Wii was their last console, meanwhile Nintendo did pour heart into the games and apps like you mentioned, bankruptcy was even in the talks and out of nowhere they release a versatile trendy console, but Nintendo used it as a financial recovery more than a love project and it show, the switch is what the Wii U needed to be marketing wise but with cheap corners cut, still very fun to play but lacking soul in its menus and lack of retro library, I feel like the switch was an extension of their plans with the Wii U and hopefully the next console will be an actual triumphant return for us gamers with a higher quality product and Nintendo actually caring again since they bounced back financially (which is their priority)

    The Mario era of the switch has been bad. Nintendo has been acting dumb when it comes to developing Mario games. The whole switch era.
    We should have gotten a Mario Kart 9 instead of 8 Deluxe, an actual new NSMB game instead of U deluxe, instead of a port of 3D World, Bowser's Fury could have been it's own entire game all together. It could have been called Super Mario 3D Island. Lakelap Cat already has a Island themed aesthetic so it would fit. And then we should have gotten an Odyssey 2. Also Super Mario Party should have been called Mario Party 11.
    A lot of the Mario games on switch were rushed. Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Golf Superrush, and even Super Mario Party were all unfinished when they came out. Mario 3D All stars doesn't have Mario Galaxy 2.
    We're getting a Mario Kart 8 booster pass, but we should have gotten it a lot sooner.
    They even gave 3D All stars, and Mario 35 a limited release date. They killed off those Mario games for no reason.

    Wii U ports hardly change the proposition as to whether or not to own the retro console known as the Wii U. It does have exclusives, has gameplay on the gamepad that cannot be replicated in emulation nor on the Switch, and can run GC and Wii games natively, which the Switch will never be able to do. So of course you should own a Wii U instead of a Switch. Only buy a Switch if you want to play the subset of Switch games on the go and you don't want to own your VC titles.

    now that the 3DS is ended, I'm here to say, I agree. 3DS and Wii U had so many great games plus support for DS, virtual console, etc. Switch... there was Zelda BotW, TotK, LA, and SS... Metroid Dread. a few Pokemon game that I played but just didn't live up to their forebears.Animal Crossing was fun for awhile during initial covid lockdown but that got old fast... Nintendo Switch just doesn't seem to have that much of a Library. there are other games for it that I'll probably get around to playing that I didn't list here, but I don't know. I don't think Switch has the repertoire that the 3DS had. and it's not as portable as Nintendo would like us to think. The better games, like BotW and TotK, don't play well on that tiny screen. I'm always checking Nintendo for upcoming releases, and there never seems to be anything. the games coming out for switch look like mostly cheesy indie games. the examples you listed in the video. I don't pay and play those games. 1 2 switch, etc. and the Nintendo event that just aired... ugh.
    I'm finished with TotK, bought and modded a 3DS... it's time to get started.

I don’t understand why people say the Wii U had no games when half the first party games on switch are Wii U ports. They’ve gotten lazy since the switch has sold so well. Wii vs. Switch
    Wii has better controllers than the Switch.
    Wii has music for its different channels, the Switch has no music at all.
    Wii (and WiiU, and 3DS) had free online, and even the Switch at one point, but now, the Switch doesn’t.
    Wii has 3 languages to choose from per unit, the Switch has more per unit.
    Wii has more innovation than Switch, turning the Wii into an iconic console. (Where do you think my profile picture came from?)
    Wii (and WiiU, and 3DS, apparently) had more retro games in its online shop than the Switch currently does (as of March 29, 2022).
    Wii has slightly worse graphics (and resolution) than the Switch, which is understandable. (It isn’t saying much, since great-looking Wii games exist)
    Is the Wii a better console, or is it the Switch that’s the better console?

    Doom was a current gen game that runs on Switch, that said it runs better on other platforms but that's to be expected. Aside from that I agree on several of the points you made especially in the realm of online, miiverse, legacy content and hardware reliability. I was a Wii U owner who sold his Wii U not long after getting the Switch and now I have sold my Switch and went back to Wii U(My primary platforms now are Series S, Stadia and Amazon Luna) The droughts on the Wii U were severe for me as while I do enjoy some Nintendo franchises I generally prefer 3rd party games. I had gotten the Wii U mostly because it was the cheapest console at the time. I followed on with the Switch because the idea of getting both Nintendo exclusives and 3rd party games portable was very appealing to me(still is but I moved on to cloud gaming). I enjoyed my time with the Switch and for a time thought it was Nintendo at it's best but after taking a step back I no longer hold the same opinion. Nintendo is doing well though and that's good.
    I picked up a Wii U again lately because I was missing Nintendo in my gaming collection and having moved on to other platforms 3rd party games were no longer a concern and for Nintendo and legacy content Wii U is just better than Switch at the current time.

    I agree with you 100% except for implying that Animal Crossing got an insubstansial sequel. Love or hate it that game was a huge overhaul to town customisation and the overall direction/objectives as a result. It isnt perfect but its one of the few things I think is truly unique for the Switch atm and could make it “worthwhile” (as a bullet point).
    Still I agree and I also feel the Wii U/Switch took a lot more risks. I think the Switch is really boring despite a strong start, and Nintendo haven’t done many huge positive shakeups this gen. They had some misses last gen, but it was exciting and fresh overall, and they had a lot more output. Even when you look at them taking the risk of something like a Metroid Prime sequel or Dread or something… is there something as unexpected and risky as Kid Icarus Uprising, or have you seen surprising new changes like Sakurai trying to change and cater to competitive. Last gen also had the rise of indies which is more of a timing thing but still it falls within that era. The only super risky games I can think are PLA which was a gem in the rough gen and NH which every AC fan has their own take on and BoTW but it hardly counts because its really a Wii U era game that got delayed super hard, and yes I’m saying Odyssey was a very safe game too, and the BoTW sequel looks VERY safe. I also want to say with their non-“premier” titles they seem to have much less care in them for the most part not only with the stupid update model but like none of them live up to Tropical Freeze or feel really inspired or ambitious and the 3DS and Wii U just had more high quality first-party titles overall imo. There are still good ones like Dread and stuff but a lot just fell to the wayside, and you no longer get random fun things like Pushmo/Pullblox, Dillon, etc. out of Ninty. On top of all this the addition of paid online which sucks and Nintendo’s netcode (or Wi-Fi chip or WHATEVER) STILL sucks after two gens.
    I’m probably out on all consoles next gen, I had overwhelmingly switched to PC anyway but if they keep playing it this safe with the software that will solidify it. Really boring library, lack of cool events, and the era overall has little personality and mostly feels like they’re just presenting sterile nostalgic pieces of their past. I know it’s good for them as a company after what a mess the Wii U was but as a consumer it turns me right off. Man, I loved the Wii U and especially the 3DS to the point I went to pre-release demos for the console, I kept up with every little thing in excitement, I liked the community more and the events like directs SLAPPED, and the Switch just has NO magic to it.

    This list is pretty old now, but I disagree with the reasoning that wii u ports shouldn't be counted as your argument is basically 'with the merge between handheld and home teams they should have more capacity to work on original items'.
    But with the switch they had to go to an entirely new cpu architecture and moved from AMD/ATI to Nvidia graphics library. That means substancial effort needed to be made in tooling and engine work. Porting something over is almost like starting completely from scratch. Its worth noting that the wii u architecture is not that different from the wii and gamecube's built on the same IMB power pc structure.
    Like you get easy backwards compatibilty from ps4 to ps5 and xbone to series. But the 360 and ps3 era is also a significant challenge due to cpu architecture changes.
    Another argument is its totally worth Nintendos time to rerelease wii u games, since the target audience grows from 13 mil to 120+ mil people

If they had to work entirely from scratch the engine and tooling work would take much much longer, would be much more buggy and we'd get even less games overall.

      Don't get me wrong, I think the numbers in your video was very interesting, but I would have loved to see how much it would differ if you included the ports as well.
      All I'm saying is Nintendo's choices are sometimes baffling, but from a technical challenge of what they had to do this generation it makes sense that they brought out so many ports. Even though that means some of their customers are left a bit bored.
      I'd love to discuss this more cause it's genuinely a great interest of mine, just don't want to bore you to tears.
      If I may make a recommendation, another Aussie made a great video. Check out Green Ham Gaming's 'how powerful is the Wii U' or something in that line.
      Edit: and to answer your question directly, what does this have to do with your video. You had an open ended question as to why didn't we see similar amount of original releases when the dev teams were combined? The answer is obv technical challenges, which made ports a good idea in almost every sense, but it's also more work than porting something over to the same architecture.
