I bought a used Wii U at GameStop for 70 dollars with everything bundled and a free copy of tropical freeze in 2017 when everyone was trashing it but I could see it's potential. I now have virtually every Nintendo game from NES to Wii U at my fingertips and I love it

“Wii U had a lack of games back then”
I’d argue. The game library was pretty great even though it was initially kind of slow for the first few months. I’d even as far to say that it’s original game library is better than that of the Switch and I’d even recommend buying a Wii U just to play those games for A 1/5TH THE PRICE on a better controller, better UI, and the added benefit of home-brew.

In my opinion, my biggest reason why I like the WiiU so much is how much personality and so much features that the Nintendo Switch lacks. Remember the last time Nintendo announced that Miiverse would be on the Nintendo Switch? I don't.
Infact, there's so much features in the WiiU that it actually feels like a place/environment.

The Wii U Game Pad feels very comfortable to hold. It’s well balanced with well placed analogue sticks, the right one is above the buttons button where it should. There’s even a proper “d+pad”, plus the touch pad stylus inputs work flawlessly even if being older technology. The game pad simply seems ergonomically correct and was very well thought out and designed. The pads user interface is spot on and flows smoothly with zero lagging unlike what we received on the Switch. In fact it’s the form, fit, user interface and eShop on the Switch that feels like a step backwards and those who have both know exactly what I’m talking about. The Wii U isn’t without it’s own shortcomings as the twi piece design is rather cumbersome and game pad range is appropriately 20’ from the console itself. The Switch has poor analogue sticks and the right one is below the buttons making them almost inaccessible or at the very least very uncomfortable. Holding the switch is flat out uncomfortable. Switch only win over the Wii U is not having a the two piece console & game pad design and a better screen technology. IMO Nintendo got it half right with the Wii U but not quite half right with the Switch. If Nintendo would place the right analogue stick above the buttons so you don’t have to reach over it and give us a proper D+pad it’s be half right but that Switch user interface is awful and navigation feels bla. Switch “eShop” is also poorly conceived and the funny thing is that and both the Switch interface and eShop can be easily updated but Nintendo seems to either be lazy or not wanting to admit the Wii U was actually superior on these fronts. Here’s to hoping Nintendo can mix what was great on the Wii U with the hybrid nature of the Switch because the hybrid thing really was about the only advantage over the Wii U when they release their next console.

    • @Ramunas211
      @Ramunas211 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Whenever people say the console feels lost to time because of the Switch I just say that the Switch isn’t going to last forever. Yes the Switch sold a lot more but do you think that people in 10 years are going to say the Switch makes the Wii U outdated? Because by then both consoles will be considered history and worth collecting for. However I’m glad we have ports on Switch in the meantime so you can get them for like 1/5 the price on Wii U. Not to mention the PS4 has many of it’s games on PS5 yet no one says that makes the PS4 bad so people are just hating the Wii U for literally zero reason whatsoever.

I modded all three of my Wii U's and backed up the NAND. That is something everyone should do now with all the reports of people pulling out their Wii Us from storage just to find it bricked with no NAND backup to fix it. I do have a GameCube w/ Digital A/V and HDMI adapter on the same TV. The GC does look good but the Wii U is very sharp. Of course both can do widescreen hacks that make it even better. I use the GC /w GBA player for GB/GBC/GBA. For Wii/Wii U to GC controller adapter, I'm using a MayFlash adapter from Amazon that plugs into the WiiMote. Works with both wired and Wavebird controllers and the analog triggers work like analog.

Game pad console and everything really good condition (black 32GB model). Also had Mario kart 8 downloaded on the console too! Also bought a few things in the Eshop and will before the Eshop closes… also bought Yoshi’s Wooly world too! I love the Wii U. I already modded it. Haven’t done too much with it though. My Wii is already fully loaded with everything … (GameCube and Wii games plus VC and can emulate everything Nes-N64) so I already have that.

There's actually more exclusive WiiU titles than one might think. I'm a fan of the Switch, but I much prefer the WiiU. If you were a person that bought this near launch, and it was your only home console of the generation, it was absolutely painful, I don't care what anybody says. I was a massive Wii U defender back in the day, looking back I was pretty stupid. Months on months of game droughts, lack of titles lack Animal Crossing or Metroid. That first year was so bad, litterally just Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U for the whole time. Dont get me wrong, there are definitely some great stand out titles, DK Tropical Freeze, Splatoon, Mario Maker. But you can count them on your hands. Absolutely no third party support whatsoever, like, at most I'd rate Wii U's full library as being okay in hindsight, best thing about the platform. But then talking about the hardware, it's bad imo. Menus were clunky and slow, and games would take upwards of 2 minutes to launch. Anybody remember how long it took Smash 4 to boot? But then you have the absolute abomination that was how controllers were handled. So many different compatible controllers. Wii remotes, an official gamecube adapter, the game pad, nunchucks, wii classic controller. All of these control options, and then you're just gated out of using them depending on what a specific game says is okay, or heck, some times it makes you put down the gamepad, use another one, so that's just awkwardly off to the side. I can't fathom how dumb it was to own 4 gamecube controllers and be able to use exactly none of them to play multiplayer mario kart, because Nintendo said screw you only for Smash Bros.
I genuinely hope Nintendo continues looking at why this system failed as they're once again about to transfer from their most successful system to its successor soon, would hate to see their hubris lead to a disaster like this again lol. Which, it's fine for people to like it I guess, I mean the gamepad is a pretty comfortable controller. Me personally, the retro library is 100 percent irrelevant. If you have a decent gaming PC, you can play every title Nintendo has ever released lol. Even like a Steam Deck. But regardless, I see the appeal as an all in one retro system I suppose. But besides this retrospective use, there's just so much wrong with this that it is obvious why it failed. Switch was them listening to problems people had with Wii U and actively working to fix them. I hope their next system sees them doing the same with the Switch. I will always believe that this system fully deserved to fail in the way it did, and I say this as a person with massive nostalgia for that era.

@@Cheesehead302e point of nintendo consoles is that they're charming novelty gimmick machines that thankfully have enough unique games to stand apart from the competition. There was nothing really wrong with the wii u besides the fact they failed to properly market the thing to clueless soccer mommies, like with the wii. If you buy a Nintendo console with the expectation of having every generico overhyped 3rd party spectacle game, or to not have any "droughts" (especially when they also have to develop for a portable console), then you're doing something wrong 💀

Go to training mode and spend about two hours learning the controls, because the motion controls are kinda complicated. There's a minus button that swap screens and you have the ability to turn the motion controls on or off in the pause menu. It's easier to shoot everyone in first person mode, where as all ranged mode is easier for avoiding enemies.

I got my Wii U in spring of 2022. Picked it up on Marketplace for $150. It included the console, 3 wii motes, 2 3rd party nunchukes, extra plug in controls, 3 games, and all the console stuff. Everything was in great shape and I was able to factory reset it and log my nintendo ID onto it. So i had enough time to buy some E shop games. Thank god to because I didnt want to pay $100 for Metroid Prime Trilogy or Twilight Princess HD. The Wii U has quickly become one of my favorite consoles. I can play all my Wii games on here, bought all the virtual console games i want, and Wii U games too. I wish i bought one in 2013.

Sometimes I just want a break from big screen gaming, and at home it's really a nice novelty to play excellent games on a tablet - just like on the Switch. I don't care that I can't take it on a bus or a train, I just enjoy the option to play games in the palms of my hands with headphones. It's immersive and you're not taking over the living room, so you can play great (and now cheap!) games while everyone else watches Netflix, etc. You don't have to be a hermit and disappear to another room. Plus, Zelda: BotW and other titles ported over to the Switch really don't look much different when your screen is only about six inches. I remember specifically getting my black Wii U for playing Gamecube games when my Wii decided to stop reading Gamecube discs.
My Gamecube stopped reading original discs once I installed a modchip (I recently learned that's a known issue with that specific chip!), so I needed a way to play the games.
Once I migrated everything from my Wii to my Wii U and reset the Wii, it started reading Gamecube discs again........

While the Switch is an improvement in almost every way, the UI is a pretty huge downgrade from the Wii U and I often think about game ideas that are no longer as easy to accomplish without the dual screen controls the 3ds and Wii U had. I almost wish they made a grip for the joycons that could use a smartphone as a touchscreen, as we have just seen Nintendo use a similar concept with their 1-2 switch sequel

Emulation for my Wii games and things where I can quickly switch between them sounds like a lot of fun. When I originally touched a Wii U it was at a friend's house years after release (he is a big Nintendo fan and still owns the Wii U) and I've had some great experiences playing with him and my brother on it

A controller with a full screen! That's an incredible innovation, I hope we will see the continuation of this kind of technology in the future. Also it's so great that the WiiU supports all the Wii controllers and plays Wii games. Just amazing for videogame fans and has Call of Duty games, Batman Arkham games and James Bond 007 Legends, Breath of the Wild, Lego Batman, Mass Effect etc.

Even though I have a soft spot for the Wii U, I feel like most of the praise you gave it would just as easily apply to the Wii. The Wii has a stellar Virtual Console, is super easy to mod and homebrew, with native Gamecube support while being much cheaper than a Wii U currently. Unless you want to play Xenoblade X, it's a hard purchase to justify.

I loved the WiiU when I bought it at the end of its life (due to how cheap it was, how cheap all the games were, and how many great exclusive games I was able to play) But nowadays with modding it has just become the perfect modern, hassle-free-, retro console for ALL Nintendo games up to the Switch. The gamepad is comfortable and the console outputs to HDMI with 1080p output. I couldn't be happier that I bought one... Question is how sought after these will become in the future.

  • @j95lee

I had a Wii and loved the unique controls, but there was no doubt the system was underpowered and lacking in choices. It only got 3 cod games and missed out on most fighting games. It had no HDMI support so the graphics were subpar even by the standards of that time. Since the titles that mattered to most people skipped out on wii or offered a watered down version on wii, I moved onto other consoles. So did others, I imagine. There wasn't much enthusiasm for wii u.
Nintendo has a reputation of being casual and kid friendly. That worked to their advantage for the Wii, which was trendy family console. Lots of people who weren't part of the gaming base bought it for the experience of motion control. It could be used as exercise, fishing driving, etc. But since most North American families have multiple tvs or started to watch more things on their phones, the appeal of a handheld console just wasn't there.

It would be cool if someone could make a program that could allow you to send and receive infrared signals through the it on the top of the gamepad. Considering Nintendo and Visteon made a GBA/DVD Player, but the controllers are rare as s***, it would make a great alternative. Or expand on the TV remote functionality. Or use the gamepad as a Wiimote just for the lols.

The WiiU was a great plataform, I have great memories playing 4x1 games of Nintendo Land or Mario Party with my friends, or playing Mario Kart 8, Smash 4 or Wii Sports Club with them too (or any other local coop game). I really understood what they wanted to achieve with the gamepad and I loved every game that made a great use of it to increment the gameplay. Too bad that the entire project, looking in retrospect, looks so poorly planned, in many fronts. From hardware to software and to publicity. The Switch fixed many of these things and having a WiiU side by side to a Switch just shows how incredibly poorly projected was the system, and also some incredibly terrible choices they made.
I'm used to be the guy that takes the console to friends house in which we reunite to play, and I just decided to take the WiiU in a last time just to remember the good old days. Oh god, this system has SO MANY THINGS, SO MANY CONTROLLERS, CABLES... seriously.. The console is already not really small, then theres the ENOURMOUS Power Supply of the console, the Power Supply for the Gamepad, the Gamepad, the Sensor Bar and HDMI cable. Also, because we would play games like Nintendo Land and Smash Bros, I had to take ALL possible usable controllers. So, to play Nintendo Land or Wii Sports Clube I need to take the 4 Wii Remotes, and at least 2 Nunchucks to play some of the minigames. And to play other games like Smash 4 the Wii Remote is sh*t, so I also had to take 3 Pro Controllers (as the gamepad works fine for playing smash). So, I end up with a big and very heavy bag with all this hardware, cables, controllers, and I just think "jesus, this is such a poorly designed system". It really looks and feel like a prototype for the Switch, that is much simple to do all this. All of the device, dock, cables and controllers fit in a very small bag. And jesus.. almost forgot, the need for batteries for the wii remotes.. 4 controllers requires 8 charged batteries, and this is just so annoying to take care of.
The Switch is a much better realised system. The flexibility of the controllers and the fact that almost everyone has one also helps in these days of gaming in friends houses, as less hardware needs to be transported and even if needs to transport all, its much smaller and simple.
I still love my WiiU, at the time, it was my second favorite console ever (losing only for the PS3). But I also understand why it failed, the project was bad, it feels and looks like a prototype when we put it side by side to a Switch. I still miss some possibilities that it provided that the Switch still dont. Like the 4x1 minigames, or games that implement dual screen gameplay to improve gameplay in a good way. I hope we will see a Switch 2 bringing back some of these features, maybe the system will allow to send image from the console to the dock by bluetooth and allow us to have a second screen in TV even without a console on the dock (that would be nice, we could have Nintendo Land back). The gamepad also feels better to hold in comparison to the Switch, but it could also be smaller, with shoulder buttons and triggers being closer. Anyway, I hope the Switch being as sucessful as it is, will bring back previous features that went missing from the WiiU era, the good things, to add to the experience of the Switch 2.

I had one before in 202p, ended up giving it away to a friend and regretted it sincerely. This year, I literally traded in my PS4 pro just last month (August) to a local video game store, to get a Wii U, mostly so I could play Rockband and Guitar hero. I ended up modding it so I can play the older final fantasy games as well. I am really enjoying my modded Wii U and I can't wait to copy over some of my older retro games!😮

Out of the box I used to gamepad as my tv remote, it had Netflix, crunchy roll, TH-cam… spent hours exploring on Wii Street U.. browsing peoples artwork on MiiVerse.. plus between the 3DS and Wii U Nintendo was pumping out content. Hell, I mean in just a short few years we got Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros Wii, New Super Mario Bros 2, 3D Land, 3D World, Luigi U, Luigi’s Mansion 2, Mario Kart 7 & 8… and that’s just Mario.. and only some of them! Switch has just been ports of games I owned on Wii U … and Mario Odyssey

5:30: Whoa! Anyway, the Wii U failed so bad that Nintendo stopped making consoles altogether and now only makes handhelds. It's just like how the Vita failed so bad against the 3DS that Sony stopped making handhelds. Does that mean the Vita was bad? Hell no! It was a LOT more powerful and had great games. But it wasn't as good an experience as the 3DS. The Wii U wasn't bad and had great games (even if they aren't exclusive anymore), but it was a generation behind the Xbox One and PS4, and they had a LOT more great games. Nintendo also really screwed up by not making the Wii U GameCube compatible out of the box. The Wii was not a gamerboy console, but the GameCube and Wii U were. Nintendo should have realized that only gamerboys were going to purchase the Wii U (since they abandoned the Exergaming crowd that purchased 60 million Wii's and 30 million Balance Boards for Wii Sports/Wii Fit) and made sure that gamerboys would have three generations on Nintendo console games to run on one machine. That could have helped make up for the fact that it was so far behind the XOne and PS4 graphically and in the native game library. Ironically, that is what makes the Wii U so compelling now. It can run three generations of Nintendo games natively, plus older Virtual Console/DS/GBA games and has great emulation support. Every gamerboy should own a Wii U even if they have a Switch.

Some people don't want to emulate because they don't want to pirate games. You can't have "your own roms" unless you have the game, which implies buying it on ebay. So you not understanding why some people don't want to emulate is kinda like saying "why are you a loser and not pirate games".
Btw, not every single game in an emulator works the same and not everybody wants to deal with that. It's not really hard to understand, dude.

I can’t stand when people say people won’t remember the Wii U fondly. Yes it sold badly but it still sold enough to become nostalgic and remembered. I mean look at the Saturn and Dreamcast they sold even less and they are cult classics and the GameCube only sold 50% more. It may not be as widely appreciated as the GameCube, but it will be certainly pretty close if not on par.

Excellent video. Been messing around with wii modding ~10 years now and this is a really well put together video
Just wrote out some thoughts below - feel free to answer/ask questions, or share ideas you have for my build. Im tryna make the ultimate nintendo console. Sorry its kinda long lol
I have been thinking about tricking out a Wii lately (hdmi direct from the board, usb c power, maybe internal hdd/ssd) but you just made me remember what a powerhouse a modded wii u is - i do just have a few more things to consider before deciding which console to mod (i have a modded wii u and several wiis already). Things like:
-What boot options are available for a modded wii u? Can i boot straight to a wii homebrew app, like nintendont? Not totally necessary, but i want to know
-Do both analog (the squareish video adapter) and digital (hdmi) come direct from the motherboard, or is there a conversion that may introduce some latency when using one of the ports. If there is, i wonder if the wii hdmi mod (AVE-HDMI) would work on the wii u
-With no GCC ports, will the adapter, working with nintendont, introduce any sort of input lag? Do j want to have to carry an adapter? I really like how the GCC ports are built into the wii.
-No GC memory card slot sucks. I wonder if there is a work-around. I know memcard emulation is great but i still have use for gamecube memory cards. I dont need it on the console itself necessarily but its definitely something i want to be able to do
-Can i use Wiimfi/Riivolution to play wii games online? Havent gotten into that at all yet on wii, but will at some point for mario kart wii deluxe probably
-Its also bigger than a wii. I will be bringing this with me..i think there is a usb c power wii u mod as well cuz i do not want to bring an adapter with me. 4 usb ports is nice though
But ds games and wii u games.. handheld gc/n64 on the gamepad whenever. Thats pretrt nice. And there are plenty of amazing wii u games that just aren't on peoples radar because the wii u flopped commercially. What a great console
I care about all of these things because in addition to being a lifelong nintendo player, I'm treating this like a project id like to optimize for all settings, and hopefully be able to access/update easily. I also play ssb melee a lot - not actively competitively these days, but having a single setup that could do all nintendo gaming either natively or reliably (n64 is shakiest in wii/wii u's case but a lot of work was done to improve it significantly) in addition to good (slippi compatible) melee on real hardware with both digital and analog video outputs would solve a lot of my gaming desires
