    That's honestly how I feel about the Switch era. Looking at it in the vacuum, there is a fair share of content to offer. However, as a successor to the Wii U and the 3DS, it is incredibly lackluster. It all feels devalued because I owned a Wii U. I kind of regret not having a 3DS earlier because a lot of franchises I got to play on Switch had better counterparts on that console. I bought a Series X at launch and it is a much better console to play third party games on, so I can't even excuse the lacking exclusives with the multiplatform games.

      @@GQtheGamer yep, with barely any proper grip to them like the joycon's tend to loose grip for me more than the wii remote because of how small the joycon's are. It also doesn't feel right to hold like the wii remote again because of it's size. Honestly I'd feel bad for kids who have trouble properly holding stuff because the small joycon's will probably affect them the most unfortunately and turning them sideways is worse because of how small it is. Edit again: although i do that without the wrist strap the wii remote if you used too much force then it would fling or fall out of your hands lol. Idk if the joycon wrist strap fixed this problem though.

    Alright, I’m just going to come out and say it. Satoru Iwata was a president who cared about games first and foremost. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that 2-3 years after his death that Nintendo slows down their output of games because they are making just as much money if not more by drip-feeding their customers. (The implication being that the games given the green-light under Iwata were produced and shipped in that time-frame).
    Let’s be real, that Mario 3D-Allstars s**t wouldn’t have happened under Iwata, NO WAY!

      I know that this comment is old. But it's true that during the wii era on the 25th anniversary of Mario. All we got was a lazy port of SNES games. But iwata did fix his mistake during the wii u era and actually gave us a good new original game called super Mario maker for the 30th anniversary(hopefully i said that right). Edit: the games during iwata's era were delayed but for good reason to make sure that they ran well and were complete finished games. Also like this video said there were 3ds games during the wait time for new wii u games so at least people got to play something while waiting.

      @@M64bros I know this reply is 5 months overdue. I did not originally see your reply then, so I am rectifying that now.
      Mario’s 25th anniversary did not use inferior versions of the game (Shindo rom). And it was not missing games that should have been celebrated. Mario 3D all-stars did not have Mario galaxy 2. The 25th anniversary edition did not have super Mario world, but that is still consistent as it wasn’t a re-release of “super Mario all stars +”.
      Oh and the large point, they did not scrub the game from the stores at the end of the fiscal year. That’s where I strongly believe Iwata would not have done that.

      Nintendo's always been overprotective of their IPs, nothing new there. The Wii U's terrible marketing has nothing to do with the quality of the system. Many of the Switch's best-selling games are clearly sequels to or improved versions of 3DS games, much like the Wii U (which I don't really see as an issue). The Switch has its fair share of mediocre games as well, ex. @@davemarquez770 in smash ultimate the only new content is world of light and new dlc characters, a few new stages based on other franchises and i think that was it. They removed trophies, ruined toon link's design and zelda's. I've heard that smash ultimate is worse competitively than smash 4 and considering how Nintendo has been treating the smash community since 2020(yes past years were bad, but 2020 was ten times worse considering people had to stay indoors). Smash 4 had new dlc characters, stage's, costumes and introduced custom mii fighters and you could customize your smash bros character by adding new stats(from what i remember). Also you didn't list any wii u first party games like Mario kart 8, smash 4, mario 3d world, hyrule warriors, Nintendo land, mario bros u, game and wario, donkey Kong tropical freeze etc.(ironically enough i remember more third party for 3ds & wii u than first party, but still great first party games overall) also I'm pretty sure that he said that him not liking bayonetta 3 and fire emblem was his opinion, so try harder for an argument like that. And when smash 4 came out the majority of people loved it and it was praised for another smash bros game and second it was fun and competitive. I've heard that star fox is bad, but idk cas i haven't played it yet. Oh and also he listed more games than star fox zero if you watched the video bro. I can see why he would think smash ultimate is weaker considering that it removed trophies and most of the content is just stages from past games i mean don't get me wrong they added some new stuff, but not enough for 60 dollars, at best it should've been 40 or less and the competitive scene in smash ultimate isn't as good as 4 considering that they changed so much of the controls competitive wise and made it worse. Also personally i don't care about the switch like at all because for me in late 2018 when they added paid online and locked retro games behind a paywall. I knew that Nintendo wasn't the same anymore which is sad, i mean sure back then they did some anti consumer stuff like the 25th anniversary mario edition was a bunch of nes ports i think that's right hopefully. But during the wii u era made super Mario maker for the anniversary and that was superior considering that it was a new game and two you could finally make you're own levels and share them. "He did no research on why there might be less games than 3ds/wii u" dude he shows a timeline of the games in the video. Yeah the switch has games, some good, some awful(Nintendo switch sports, Mario strikers battle league, kirby star allies, 1,2 switch, skyward sword "hd"(the game is fine, it's the business practices that made it worse honestly) and honestly the wii u had more ambitious games than switch(mostly Nintendo land which was awesome compare that to 1,2 switch it's no contest wii u wins there). And i don't really pay attention to Microsoft or sony so idk about their output. Also the only two games that the switch launched with that were promoted a lot was mario odyssey and breath of the wild. Other than that it was Mario kart 8 deluxe which was just a wii u port not an original game. Oh yeah also maybe you should get a hobby instead of replying to most of the comments here. Edit again just counted and you replied 5 times on the videos comments from different people of course. So dude you need a hobby. Oh i forgot to mention this but it's not just the output of games like the video says it's also Nintendo's terrible business practices and how it rips off the consumers basically 60 dollar games plus forced to pay to play online screws over the consumer greatly, how you can't keep retro games anymore unlike the wii u and 3ds that let you keep your games, games saving to the system memory instead of the cartridges or sd card etc. Oh the expansion pack that wants you to pay 50 bucks a month for games you can't keep forever. That's the main con's. I mean don't get me wrong Microsoft started pay to play online bs and then sony followed and now Nintendo. It's sad how far gaming has fallen over the past few years now. I swear soon Nintendo will make glitchy unfinished, buggy, broken messes and shills will still buy it sad man sad.

  • @Mechadeuce
    @Mechadeuce 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    The discourse around Switch vs. Wii U/3DS has never had me feeling more like I'm taking crazy pills (Though, people often forget to bundle 3DS in with the discussion despite being there the whole generation) These are all valid and obvious points of contention with the Switch, but NOBODY ever talks about them... Like, the Switch is clearly a bad home console from a specs/hardware perspective, with terrible controllers, and no core gimmick to offer third-party games a way to stand out compared to versions on Xbox or PS, unlike the Wii U which could always tout Gamepad features as a selling point (I cannot play Assassin's Creed IV on anything but a Wii U.) But it's even more clearly not a good handheld, by three simple facts. It's uncomfortable to hold, it can't fit in you're pocket, and it's battery life is terrible.
    There's also another thing that I don't see people talk about often, and that's the fact that people who actually owned and played their Wii U almost always spoke highly of the system at the time, but at some point, maybe around late 2015 to early 2016, it just felt like the court of public opinion took over and no one was allowed to say they like it anymore. Though it might also of been a combination Satoru Iwata's passing, and do to the fact that the PS4 and Xbox One were almost worth owning by that point.
    But seriously, if you watched/listened to gaming-centric podcasts of the time like Completely Unnecessary Podcast, Two on the Vine etc. they'd always talk about how much they enjoy the Wii U and 3DS. Even your average let's players/streamer's most popular series/streams were often Wii U or 3DS games like Super Mario Maker, Mario Kart 8 or Smash for. Tomodachi Life so on and so forth. Just type in X-streamer/let's player + Mario Maker or Tomodachi Life and check out the insane view counts, it's nuts!
    And another thing that bugs me, is that people often say "Nintendo's marketing was SO BAD in the Wii U-era" and then show like two ads centered around and marketed towards kids/families, while conveniently ignoring the fact that they stole every E3 from 2013 to 2016 (Granted, this wasn't the hardest challenge,) and their standard Directs were better and happened much more often then those in the Switch-era. If someone can find a non-E3 Direct in the Switch-era with a more hype announcement than Cloud Strife getting into Smash, I'd be shocked.
    Also one of a small final point. Nintendo treated indies so much better in the Wii U days.

    • @WumbleWasp
      @WumbleWasp  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I agree with this a lot. The marketing complaints bother me quite a bit, because who actually .. cares about their commercials and ads? I never watched them. They don't impact the quality of the games. Or of we're talking about the publicity aimed towards their fans and not the general market, i.e. directs/press conferences, then they feel a lot more sterile, and less frequent these days than in the past anyway.
      That a lot of people also just forget about the 3DS does bug me a lot too. It's a massive part of their history, it was sucessful during its run, and it had a slew of amazing games. I can understand if people want to call out the Wii U, but so many people treat me and others crazy for calling the pre-switch nintendo era... just good, not even necessarily better. What did the 3DS do to deserve this fate .. haha..
      And yeah, games like MK8, SSB4, Splatoon and Mario Maker had mass appeal and large communities online. It didn't even seem like they were locked to an unsuccessful console. Unless I'm just misremembering everything, outside of the rough launch, the system was loved at least for the first half of its lifespan at the time. It definitely carried the opening years of the 8th console gen in geneal. It's a shame that people only have negative things to say about it these days.

Unlike a wii remote or a pro controller. Those were actually designed well. Of course joycon drift is still a thing unfortunately. Also the switch having a dead pixels problem at launch never got fixed and even though Nintendo knew about the problem just like joycon drift they refused to fix it. Don't get me wrong dead pixels have been a problem since the Nintendo ds but the difference is that Nintendo back in 2004 or 2005 would actually fix the issue or just give the customer a new one that didn't have the problem. The Switch only has fully priced ports with a new “Funky mode” added and even amongst the non-ports game a lot of them are really disappointing like 1-2-Switch (the worst Nintendo tech demo), Kirby Star Allies (the laziest Kirby game by a long shot), Pokémon Sword and Shield (reskinned 3DS games) and Super Mario Odyssey (who is okay but extremely disappointing by being way too easy and short and NO collecting boring moons everywhere is not a good endgame!)

      Eh...arguably the Switch has better games, it has a better controller with the pro controller, the online thing is true, same with console features and the Wii U not having any drift problem...but the Switch is also a hybrid console so that's a plus. So that's 3 positives and three negatives for the Switch. Not true, it has tons of non ports. And the Wii U didn't have disappointing games? Mario Tennis Ultra Smash which was 50$ and had barely anything...while Aces had more at launch and added more content in updates and had actually good gameplay. Eh...with the mechanics and fan service and lore...it arguably isn't the laziest Kirby game at all, and either way...the Switch also has the most ambitious Kirby game in years with Kirby and the forgotten land. True...Sword and Shield just suck. Odyssey really isn't disappointing and it wasn't too easy...there was certainly challenge to it at times, and it being short was fine as it was designed to be that and to be replayable too, and not all of the moons are boring as a lot of them are fun to collect so the Endgame is good.

      @@Jdudec367 The pro controller doesn’t really count as it isn’t the main controller for the console and it doesn’t come with the console either as well as costing 60$. The hybrid console thing is great in concept but in reality the Switch is too big, too expensive, too uncomfortable to hold in handheld mode, too fragile and it also stores save file on the console instead of the cartridges like on 3DS which means that if you loose your Switch somewhere not only do you loose a lot of money but also all of your game progression. Mario Tennis Ultra Smash is bad but there is even more bad games on Switch. Kirby Star Allies is awfully easy (Kirby games aren’t that easy normally), launched unfinished, only has 4 worlds and isn’t innovative in any capacity but I do agree that Forgotten Land looks good (I just haven’t played it yet). Yoshi’s Crafted World is really really bad compared to Woolly World. Super Mario Odyssey isn’t bad but it’s definitely not as good as people make it to be. The moon collecting is mostly annoying and we loose the feeling of accomplishment we had in past games getting a Star for example. The game IS too easy and no other 3D Mario is as easy as Odyssey and the game being short for me is huge negative (when I got the game I finished it in only 2 days).

    I feel like profile icons were the only big improvement we got for the Switch. But even then you only had a select few characters and series to choose from. If you payed for the online service then you get access to a limited selection of icon elements that changes every month/week or so which increases by a slight margin if you get the expansion pack which at the moment adds icons for the N64 games included in the expansion pack that change randomly depending on what the missions are.
    Everything else about the Switch however, feels like a bunch of massive downgrades. It really does feel like they tried to make things easier for themselves by making a two-in-one system, but because of that they made the console feel lifeless and empty. And with Iwata gone and Reggie retrired the company itself feels like the charm they made vanished and instead fully embraced becoming a soulless corporation. Just look at all of the takedowns and DMCA's over the past few years.

    I like your honest opinion and the data and analysis of the timeline and volume of Nintendo made games during the Wii U and 3DS era. Given the modding scene plus the smaller form factor the 3DS shines even more. I think a lot of the heartburn of the Wii U comes from folks misunderstanding that although it looked like the Wii and was Wii compatible...it was a superior console and had more to offer. Nintendo just did a bad job differentiating the Wii U from the Wii and maybe in retrospect they should have given the Wii U a different name instead of having the prior console name in the title.

    I can’t speak for the Wii U since I never owned one. But at least for me the switch is in no way a direct replacement for the 3ds. A bunch of features like streetpass, play coins, backwards compatibility, virtual console, portability, etc. are all part of why I enjoyed the 3ds era so much. And even though the switch can technically be portable, even the lite is no where near as pocketable as even a 3ds xl. Mind you, the switch is a great console with great games, but it’s different enough from the 3ds that the 3ds can still hold its own. Even though I have the switch, I still sometimes use the 3ds with no plans to get rid of it.

    As someone who's favorite Nintendo consoles are the Wii U and 3DS I 80% agree. Sure the Switch does have a very solid library of original games but it just doesn't live up to the very high expectations of the original and innovative libraries of the Wii U & 3DS. I'd say 2017 was fantastic but 2018 was almost nothing, 2019 was ok, 2020 was once again almost nothing, 2021 was ok, but 2022 was definitely a step up but even then most of the great games were released by external studios like Kirby, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, Pokémon, and now Professor Layton while Nintendo themselves have mainly banked off of evergreen titles a lot of which were Wii U ports or even Wii & 3DS ports. I mean the only recent great games by Nintendo in 2022 were Splatoon 3 and Switch Sports but even the latter felt slightly unpolished. However 2023 is looking better I guess because we finally have TOTK and Pikmin 4 but after Pikmin 4's release on July 21 we basically have almost nothing. I'm not saying this is a bad era for Nintendo I'm saying it's good but Wii U & 3DS knocked it out of the park imo.

      Yeah that's very true. I've been thinking recently about how while their subsidiaries/partners have been doing okay, something seems to be going wrong with Nintendo EPD themselves. This is seriously the first year since 2017 that they'll be releasing multiple major games in one year (unless you really want to count Nintendo Switch Sports). And even then Pikmin 4 and Totk have been delayed for years on end. I'm willing to bet they've both been in development hell tbh.

    Coming from a FORMER Nintendo fan, the Switch is a great system and I'm not going to deny that, BUT it really baffles me (even years later) why the Wii U and N3DS family seriously does some things SO MUCH BETTER than the freaking Switch.
    - Nintendo's legacy content just sucks in comparison to Virtual Console
    - Switch's Online service... just in general is still a dumpster fire years later
    - Switch's eShop is not only garbage for putting quantity over quality with many releases, but for God's sake it doesn't even have something as simple as a rating system UNLIKE the eShop on BOTH Wii U and N3DS
    - The analog sticks on controllers DIDN'T DRIFT
    😠 Seriously, I can go on, but there's a reason why I call myself or consider myself a "former Nintendo fan".
    Like you said in this video, 'Nintendo Selects' seem to be just like Virtual Console. Something that was awesome... back in the day and something that Nintendo just doesn't want to bring back.

    I'm glad you brought that up, too. Fanboys for any platform or company are garbage, but I've seen and even talked with, by far the dumbest, most retarded, most braindead fanboys within the Nintendo community. Of course, I'm talking about the pricks that act like every single thing that Nintendo does is perfectly 100% okay and justified, JUST BECAUSE Nintendo officially did whatever it is that they did and its seriously pathetic.

    Why the Switch has been a Disappointing Console as a Wii U/3DS Owner? As I'm myself a owner of a Wii U and 3DS, I can approve that the Switch isn't so much great unlike the Wii U: Too much grab money game who are release every years since 6 years since they are very popular in Japan with too much Pokemon games, 5 Fire Emblem and 6 Kirby games, too much old Mario games from previous consoles port to the Switch instead be something new and good like Super Mario Odyssey, Luigi's Mansion 3 and Super Mario Bros Wonder so games like Super Mario 3D All-Star for Super Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy sold for 60 dollars despite they wasn't remastered on Switch with new models and better texure in game (something similar to Super Render96 for Super Mario 64) and are between 1996 and 2007, Super Mario 3D World, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, New Super Mario Bros U, Captain Toad and others are useless because what the point to buy twice the same game at the same price if you have already it on the previous console? Illogical!
    And since 6 years, from the side of the game who isn't too much know or popular in Japan, the Switch isn't able to release a new game or remaster about Star Fox and Kid Icarus, even if we have just 2 Metroid games we still don't have any news about Metroid Prime 4 anymore despite it's been 6 years they announced it so we don't know what they have really planned for this game like a side online gamemode for Vs or Co-op, Donkey Kong isn't able to have his own game exclusively on Switch who isn't a Tropical Freeze Wii U port or a GBA remake about Mario Vs Donkey Kong just like Mario Kart with the true fan who are very disappointed that Nintendo gonna just made a almost 10 years old ago Wii U Mario Kart game port on the Switch as the only new Mario Kart instead create a new one with a new mechanic like they did in previous Mario Kart: Wii for the bikes added, 3DS for glides in the airs, Wii U for defy the gravity and the Switch... Nothing except add more stuff in it but not really interesting for buy the game twice and for F-Zero we only get a F-Zero SNES Rom Hack on Switch with 99 players instead have something in 3D like a new game or remastered.
    For concluate I don't think I gonna buy their next console after the Switch if the rumour about a Switch 2 or new console in 2024 are true and I'm so far to be the lonely one to not buy the next console after see most of people are disapoint about the Switch because, after all, what the point to create a more powerfull console than the previous one if Nintendo are too much lazy for work on their game if they gonna do same like the Switch if it's for always release the same garbage grab monney bullsh*t game like Pokemon, Fire Emblem and Kirby and a lot of useless port from previous consoles to their new console instead we see something new? It's pretty illogical to buy their next console if it's for get the same thing again for complain again about it again when we know the Switch do his job perfectly for do that.

    I think if they did a switch two they would need to make it a little more like the Wii U imo. Basically have an actual home console and then the gamepad except now you could take the gamepad anywhere with you like the switch. Or if they don’t want to go back to all that, at least add in some more features that the 3ds and gamepad had such as a microphone, stylus, and maybe even a camera. I think a stylus more than anything would benefit a next generation switch so much especially for a Mario Maker 3 because the franchise was literally made for Wii U and when the second came out on switch it just didn’t feel right

    I guess it's a good thing that this video was uploaded before the Nintendo union thing last year because that was sad to see. It's a bit surprising how well this video held up. I mean sure there's super Mario wonder now. But like this video said. It doesn't really make up for 5 or 4 years of barely anything(before the pandemic btw). Also it's really sad to see how toxic the fandom has become and of course the union thing again & treating their customers like nothing during like 2020 to 2022.(never forget the eshop loss of two great systems) ☹. I mean sure this company hasn't totally perfect over the years. But during the wii/ds & wii u & 3ds days. It was a great time. People being hyped for smash bros in 2014, mario kart 8, splatoon the first new game franchise from Nintendo in years and the pro consumer stuff like virtual console, great 3ds third party support, games like monster hunter, lego games, minecraft, horror games, indie games etc were also on wii u. It was great & the best UI being the 3ds, the wii u has a great UI as well. Music everywhere in the menu, when you launched the game, music would play. Wii u famicom trial campaign the games were 30 cents each, club Nintendo. That's all i can think of for now. After seeing Nintendo become more corporate over the years and then the union stuff really just doesn't make me feel good about modern gaming anymore like it's not fun just profits nothing else. It's sad really. I mean since the union stuff it's not like people actually cared everyone still bought Nintendo games despite the whole thing. I mean i get it. It was during the shutdown of the wii u and 3ds eshop everyone panic bought and there was some good games that year as well. But how can people take others who criticize Nintendo or gaming companies in general if you buy the products anyway?(Edit: But i realized that yea i guess i shouldn't be that judgmental i mean we all make dumb mistakes or regret stuff we did in the past. I'm kinda guilty as well. Buying stupidly during the eshop closure and completely regretting it afterwards because of freaking fear of missing out crap.) But i mean it's fine if it's used or indie honestly. Indie developers are the best, triple a companies just aren't anymore unfortunately. It's sad really. 🙁 sorry for long rant/paragraph.

The ones who actually owned the Wii U and sticked with it when everyone in the western media enjoyed bashing it because it didnt sell. The ones who played with it not because of the hype but because they enjoyed the charm and magic of its games, something missing in that generation of consoles. It was the best Nintendo since the N64 era, putting everything they had for delivering their best games. The ones who kept insulting the Wii U through the last 10 years will not even bother watching videos like this, because they get in the way of their fanboysm. Talking bad about the Switch, in this day and age, is considered a sin, because the console is selling even better than the Wii. Therefore must be the best console in Nintendo history.

    Interesting video, WumbleWasp.
    You touched on the Mario series. Would you say, as of 2023, the series has improved on Switch? Many proclaim it as the "best" time to be a Mario fan given the release of the movie, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and the upcoming TTYD remake.
    Me? I do like what Mario is doing nowadays and admit that his future is looking bright, but...I still kinda like the 3DS/Wii U years more. It felt like there was a higher output of games with fewer dry spells. Of course, the common complaint is that the games (particularly the RPGs) were too sterile...
    I also miss the whimsical UI of the Wii U and 3DS. While the Wii U has longer load times, the atmosphere is relaxing, and I _love_ the bold colors. Nintendo 3DS gets points for having full-on themes and powerful games for a dedicated handheld.
    As time goes on, more people will overlook the 3DS / Wii U era. I imagine that within the next five years, there may be a renewed appreciation, but for now, the Switch continues to dominate. I do like the Switch, but 3DS and Wii U hold a special place in my heart...

      I do think that portion of the video is pretty outdated though now, post the mario movie. A lot great games kinda just came out of nowhere, the RPG side of the series is getting more attention, more experimental and new titles etc. Even the Mario Kart DLC improved a lot in quality.

    I’ve never understood those people who try and look at the games that have since been ported to switch with such venom, like saying to people that they shouldn’t be playing on Wii U but rather on the switch. People are asking in the retro scene these days about the great titles on the Wii U namely because they want new things to play on their Wii U systems. If you throw your Wii U in the trash because you can finally play those ports on switch, well…then it almost sounds like that persona didn’t like the Wii U so much as they put up with it until something better comes along. Or they will say because it’s the newer console and so they should buy that instead, to which I say the Wii U was once new once upon a time, and those people were saying the Wii U was great. Something new will always come along and the companies will always try and sell you on those systems, and remove features from devices to make you switch, so just play whatever the hell you want to play and leave people alone. :0

    I shared your opinions on the Switch... until I really played one and eventually bought one.
    I was and I still am a big fan of the 3DS. I think the Wii U is very cool, but never got the opportunity to own one when it was out. I really do wish I could have experienced the Wii U in its hay-day because it was such a wonderfully unique and social experience in a way that I will never get to experience. The 3DS, on the otherhand, is my favorite handheld console of all time and I have played it for thousands of hours over the years. The library of that system is possibly the best Nintendo has ever offered considering quantity and quality; this coming even from a raving Gamecube fan.
    Early this year I bought a Switch Lite. I actually used to dunk on modern Nintendo. They couldn't do anything right in my eyes. I had not ever owned a Switch, but I had played it a decent amount over the past couple years with friends and family. After having those experiences playing games like Kirby and the Forgotten Lands, Mario Kart 8, and other games, my opinions began to change. After building up my legacy Nintendo collection and feeling mostly satisfied with what I had acquired, I decided to take the plunge on the Switch Lite. Personally, I love it. I adore handheld gaming above all else, so having a Switch Lite to pair with my 3DS is wonderful. I don't think I would ever choose the Switch as an only console (that prize would probably go to the 3DS or GameCube [or even Wii, since it can play GameCube games]), but paired with a diverse collection of consoles and games, the Switch is a prized entry in my collection. It has a lot of great games and being able to play them portably, quickly, and conveniently, just like my 3DS, is wonderful. As for the durability of the Switch, I can understand that with the hybrid systems, but the Switch Lite feels pretty stable. Sure, I wouldn't sit on it, but I'd rather not sit on my 3DS either. And don't get me started on the failure of the R button on the DS and 3DS models. I've owned 4 DS systems (DS Lite, DSi, 3DS, 3DS) over the years and only one did not have an R button that failed. Instead the right-side of the d-pad became less responsive over time on my DS Lite. Thankfully for my current 3DS, I was able to replace the R button. And if the sticks on my Switch Lite every drift, I'll replace those just like I did with my R button on my 3DS.
    So all that to say: I love the 3DS/Wii U era. I disagree with many of your points, but I agree that the 3DS and Wii U era was better than the Switch. The 3DS alone is better than the Switch. But I love my Switch. And the Switch and 3DS paired together make a Nintendo handheld dream team.

    I watched your video a while ago and there were a couple things I did want to say. And this will be what I may be repeating in what I shared in another video from another channel.
    First, I don't think you are the only one in sharing your disappointment with Switch as much as it may be hard to share about it and that's pretty well supported by the facts you shared.
    I think what's probably happening more often are several are probably starting to realize and see more on what looks to be what I say to be the vulnerable identity of Switch in what it perhaps was fated to be in the first place.
    And that would be that it wasn't intended to be the successor to Wii U or even 3DS. It instead looked to be what is thought of as a back up plan to get out of the financial woes of Wii U and at best, a prototype of what a successor to Wii U and 3DS would like. And also that it looked like it was intended to be an extension to Wii U's generation rather than a proper successor.
    This is evident in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Switch's top selling game, and how several of the rereleases or asset flips including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe were promoted for Switch in the same way generation defining games would and would indicate that they were intending on those sort of rereleases or asset flips to be positioned as though they are those generation defining games for Switch.
    And this is even evident with Nintendo's lack of first party involvement for Switch generally year after year after 2017 with the exception of 2022 in some cases. And it shows that they are probably saving more of their effort for next generation and what I would say is what likely is the true successor to Wii U and 3DS.
    And this is also perhaps evident in there being a game on Switch that may not surpass Xenoblade Chronicles X on Wii U in its technical feats all across the board.
    I don't know what the future holds.
    But I would say that their next generation will be their most important.

    Will paste a rant I made a few moments ago about the Switch and current state of Nintendo.
    Splatoon and Splatoon 2 are very similar and the 2 could've been done on the WII U.
    Smash 4 and 5 looks the same mostly.
    BOTW is a port of a WII U game.
    Smash Ultimate is locked for me behind the paywall that yall accepted. Making 4 the best smash ever to me, consumer friendly and very fun actually.
    Smash 5 is filled of DLC characters and stuff like that. You dont mention this enough. I grew up with finished games, not with patches put behind a paywall.
    The WII U online was better than the Switch's online.
    Yall accepted that and now you'll have to deal with this crap forever until you make it stop.
    The switch is exponentially more fragile than the WII U.
    Gets scratched if you dock it without a protection for the screen.
    The joycons drift, infamous but disregarded by the "fans".
    There is sheer incompetence and bad design. I couldn't play with my Switch until I putted a screen protector via a profesionnal.
    How is this acceptable on the V2 model supposed to be a definitve take on the Switch's hardware ?
    Yall, neglecting these facts, are the main problem and Nintendo is happy you do.
    The joycon drift is a major issue.
    The unprotected, very fragile screen is an issue.
    The price of their game never going down is an issue. The disregard toward the WII U owner, reselling WII U games at an even higher price tag than back in the days.
    The online paywall.
    The DLC infestation.
    The miserable ports of 3rd parties making it irrelevant.
    The low-end hardware that's struggling a lot, and Nintendo unwilling to take risks, unwilling to make a new console or to prepare for the next generation...
    No more handheld with cheaper games.
    The Switch light, being rendered useless if it gets the drift, and they all will get it at some point ...
    How can you protect Nintendo for that ?
    They even make unfinished games ! Scarlet and Violet are a shame for the market ! Unfinished and buggy as hell.
    You'll just accept that ?
    Pokemon, the biggest franchise, crunching their devTeam to the point they cannot fix a game before selling it ? With the game, looking like a NGC/WII game sometimes ?
    Really ?
    I'm done with you people...

    I liked this video, and honestly, i share the same opnion, the 3ds era was way better than the switch, and i think the 3ds was even a better console, and the wii u have more games, and more original games, the switch is really lacking originality. although you said you don't plan to make a third video about this topic, i hope and wish you do, like, when the next nintendo console release, to make a restropective of the switch era, and have a more complete video with all of the switch era vs the wii u/3ds era, and this probably will not take too long, because the next nintendo console is probably going to be release in late 2023 or early 2024.

    The main issue with the switch is that if you have a wii u and a wii half the games are really pointless because most of the good games I care about I already own and 60 dollars is not worth the tiny additions they add to the wii u ports. The only exception would be mario kart 8 deluxe and that is only because of the new dlc that they added way after 8 delexue came out.

Mario Maker 2 was honestly a big disappointment not because the game itself isn't bad cause its technically better but not having gamepad controls was a such a downgrade. Was never a big fan of joycons, they're small and break easily while the switch os albeit a lot faster has lost all of its charm that prior system os' had. Doesn't help that to be able to have online access you have pay for it even though Switch online is still garbage.

    Yeah, I played my Wii U more than my Switch for the first 2 years it was out and then my 3DS for the the 2019-2020 time period. It wasn't really until Bowser's Fury in the 3D World Remaster that I started playing my Switch more for anything other than indies. I won't lie, it's been a kinda insane indie box. But now even indies demand more than the Switch can handle, so I got my first Xbox with the Series X for those and to play some of the 360 and One era exclusives that aren't on PC. I CONSIDERED A PS5, but I hated my PS4 and found it to have no games that interested me for so many years that it just became a Blu ray box for me to the point where, even when it did finally get some games, I just wasn't interested in holding that controller.
    On a related note. Am I the only one who liked the Wii U having high sticks on both sides? I always feel lopsided holding the Xbox/GameCube controller layout and I hate how close the sticks are on PS. No other console ever did double high sticks other than the Wii U and Switch completely abandoned that to copy the Xbox standard. I think they do it better than Xbox with the Switch. I feel like the current Xbox controllers are too slanted and my hands always slide up them (the grip on the elites alleviates this, but who wants to be requires to get a $150+ controller for a comfortable gaming session). But the D-pads on Switch controllers SUCK! It feels like Nintendo has cheaper out more than ever on their hardware, and the quality is so much worse than ever before, but they charge more than ever by a long shot. How do we still not have Nintendo Selects? How was a Wii U pro controller, with 50 hours of per charge battery life, $20 less than a Wii U pro controller and all around better aside from lacking the NFC and USB-C for charging? I hate cheapskate Nintendo and they really have been super anti-consumer this generation in this regard. At least they're finally not region locking their games anymore and they've cut back on the censorship, but they also have been doing a much worse job localizing their games. I mean, none have been as bad as triforce heroes on 3DS, they did start going downhill in that regard back around 2015, pre-Switch, but it's just mediocre these days and it feels like it's getting worse again

    Honestly, I feel like the Switch era isn't going to be as impressive looking back at it from the distant future; at best, it might be a mix bag. On the one hand, sure, the Switch is a very well communicated and successful console that's done wonders financially for Nintendo, especially compared to the Wii U/3DS era. Not to mention, it does have a solid lineup of raw exclusives, such as Mario Wonder and Smash Ultimate. But when you step out of the vacuum, there is a lot to criticize. The Switch library isn't really the most innovative one out there; it says a lot that a decent chunk of the Switch library are either remakes or ports of games from other consoles (most famously, Wii U ports). If you take those types of games out, the library, while solid, likely wouldn't be as revered as it is already. Not to mention, this is the era where Nintendo really started to piss off their core fanbase a lot. Not that they weren't a scummy business before the Switch era, but paying for a shitty online service (when it was free in previous consoles) and not giving proper access to retro games (like they did with the Virtual Console) really dragged their overall reputation down a lot.
    So, financially speaking, its one of the best periods. But critically speaking, it's okay, at best (with the aspect that has the best critical response being the raw exclusives).

    I think one phrase is a sentiment to me that really gets to me. Sure we have Mario Odyssey and Browser's Fury (trol) but there will never be another Super Mario Galaxy. I liked 3D Land but I didn't buy a Wii U and I feel like a lot of Nintendo's new Mario Games are getting this really weird artstyle and honestly, it's hard to tell what it even means for a Mario Game to even be a Mario Game anymore, especially when you consider that the last few games have been mostly spinoffs and not main original titles like Super Mario Odyssey. I've never played Bowser's Fury because I never bought a switch. I bought a Steam Deck instead, and I don't regret it, because I don't have to pay a subscription to play games online or for poor network quality and limited poor emulation (trol again). But just looking at Bowser's Fury, the artstyle just seems wrong to me. If I played Odyssey maybe I would have liked it but again I'm not paying so much for a console that doesn't have main menu music, doesn't have miiverse, doesn't even have an internet browser, doesn't have streetpass, doesn't have a mii maker, has very little fanfare (you've probably seen the wii sports vs nintendo switch sports videos) and, lastly, a console that charges you to play games online with very poor quality that you can play on a pc or on a steam deck with good quality and no subscription you've been trolled 🚎

No free shipping, barely anything free. Barely any discounts which is baffling considering inflation you'd think that they'd be more pro consumer but nope they charge for online, no price drop on main console, vouchers you have to pay 100 dollars for etc. I didn't even mention iwata or his death once why do you always say that? Honest TH-camr? It doesn't seem like it. It almost sounds like you're still defending Nintendo's current actions over and over again. Here’s what I’m going to say. This video is completely correct. And I agree with it entirely. The 3ds and Wii U are the best systems Nintendo ever made. Most games are lazy sequels or remasters. The collections are just bad. Games are just not great on the switch. The best switch game in my opinion is Kirby and the forgotten land. I trust Hal more then Nintendo themselves. Hal made so much good Kirby games this year it’s insane. Mario odyssey is overrated. It’s to repetitive for me even tho the movement is good. But here’s what really made me hate this era. Nintendos anti consumerism has skyrocketed to a level I never thought would happen. Not only does Nintendo hate fangames but they literally made Mario 35 based off one. They destroy fan games. Aswell as emulation. This has always been the case but still. Also I won’t forget #FREEMELEE. People brush it off as it’s in the past but for me it’s the point where Nintendo took a turn for the worst. The switch just also doesn’t feel very Nintendo. None of the catchy music or menus that was all loved scrolling through. There’s no themes, extra software besides games, miiverse replacement, streetpass, AR cards, badge arcade and more. The mii maker is literally in the settings. The SETTINGS. The eshop is a mess. The online service there offering is just shit. There anti consumerism is insane, there hardware is now bad which was never the case before. Some games are lazy and unfinished. I know this comment is bad but I just wanted to say this.

      The pay wall for online is anti consumer, I don't think it's worth defending even if it's relatively 'cheap'.
      Nintendo hasn't changed much in regards to DMCA strikes.
      3rd party support is pretty awful on the Switch (for AAA games), even if it's better than previously.
      I don't see how marketing/ads matter too much to fans, although I'd honestly say I prefer older ad campaigns for games back then compared to now. (e.g. Botw compared to Totk).
      In terms of bad games, you could always just not play them you know? Rather than fixating on bad games, I think it's better to look at good ones, and I really do think that there was a higher density of good games that releaed prior to the Switch from Nintendo.

    I think the you underestimate the time it takes to make ports and the difficulty it takes to mass produce high performance games on a mobile device. Like yes there are a lot of ports but the only reason why there is so many is because people will buy them and they don;t want to cannibalize their own sale. If a lot of people bought Mariokart 8 on the WiiUthen they would have made a new mariokart but they did not need to and I am happy I have the option to play it since I did not get a WiiU. Yes Nintendo abandoned their fans who were with them through their toughest times but that is what let the switch become so popular.
    Having played Breath of the Wild anywhere on a device in 2017 that cost $300 would have been unthinkable at that time. The ability to play handhelp what used to be something you had to play on the TV is amazing. I get the price is annoying but you can get deals if you monitor prices you can get deals fairly regularly.

    • @WumbleWasp
      @WumbleWasp  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ok, so I don't think I got like a single comment about ports the entire time this video has been up and now this is the second I've gotten in the span of a couple days. Weird right?
      Ports don't take much time to develop relatively speaking, and trying to insist otherwise is just misguided. Even if they had to be redone from the ground up, or transferred into a new engine or whatever, it still wouldn't require anywhere near as many staff or resources to develop as a brand new game of a similar scale from scratch. The number of staff involved in these types of projects are always heavily downscaled, and less involved as it only requires the technical staff. Outside scraps of new content, creatives have sweet fa to do with these projects, which includes directors, writers game/level designers, artists, animators, modellers, musicians, sound deisngers etc. It's not like when Nintendo commissions some wii u port these people are just sitting their twiddling their thumbs.
      And it's not like what I'm saying is fiction that I'm making up on the spot. These Nintendo ports are typically done by their support teams or if not, are outsourced to their other susidiaries or partners. Their core teams don't work on ports beyond supervision at most. They're usually done by 1-up studios, Nintendo Software Technology, or outsourced to say Tantalus games or Grezzo, or etc etc.
      Anyway, I respect your experience with the switch and all that, but it doesn't really address anything I say in this video. This video is coming from the perspective of a Wii U owner, and as one of those rare specimens, Wii U ports don't mean anything to me. I'm completely indifferent about them, besides their pricing at least.

    • @Melchirobin
      @Melchirobin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WumbleWasp I agree with that ports do not nearly take as much time to make as the original game but I get where you are coming from.
      The other thing that I wanted to mention is that the switch got most of these game and ports, and .5 improvements withing the first year to year and half of the system being launched which is why people say it has a much better line up.
      As a WiiU owner I see how you felt like yu were left out to dry but that is the reason why the switch was so successful in my opinion. They were able to get a device that could mostly play last gen game mobily and then had a ton of games ready to go near launch. Without that I don't think the switch would have been nearly as successful. If you are someone who mostly plays on the TV you have every right and reason to be upset at the way Nintendo is going right now and what they did. Nintendo completely catered to new customers instead of their hardcores which I get is hard but they had to do what is best for the company.
      i also came from your older video and in my opinion this title is better. The switch has an overall better lineup if you came from the wii or ps3/4 but if you came from the wiiU I completely get why you are disappointed

      @crystalbry4741 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Melchirobin But idk i think ironically enough that's the problem. It's just that Nintendo focusing on their new customers instead of their old customers that have supported the company for years or decades will lead to not great thing's in the long term especially considering that they're treating their older fans like trash if the Nintendo 3ds and wii u eshop closure is another to go by. Games are now 70 dollars instead of 60, not much first party games as before, no Nintendo selects, no virtual console etc. But also this might lead to wii u situation again this time instead of bad marketing. It'll be their horrible business practices that'll hurt their sales the most. Well if that ever happens i doubt it but who knows screw over people enough and they'll get upset maybe idk.

    I definitely agree with almost everything you said. I could say all the good and bad things I think about the Switch and conclude that the 3DS and Wii U were better (which is true, even if I never got there own a Wii U). But to say that most of the things I hate the switch for are unfinished games and joy con drift I think is more than enough. However, I am here to talk about what I did not like about your opinion since I honestly feel that you were very ignorant in what was the quality of the games section.
    First I will start by saying that it was very bad and ignorant on your part that you said that one of the bad things that Smash Ultimate has is that it is a glorified smash 4 or it is a Smash 4.5 when it really is not like that, Smash Ultimate visually is similar to Smash 4 but in gameplay it's not Smash 4 I say this because you praised New Super Mario Bros U when it's just glorified New Super Mario Bros Wii or New Super Mario Bros Wii.5 there is not much difference between the two games. (I do not include New Super Luigi since that is a separate game and this one does manage to differentiate itself from New Wii and New U), which annoys me since you simply complained in the slightest, Smash Ultimate has many, MANY more problems and worse than just that, The same applies to your complaint with Maker 2, it has a lot of problems, more serious problems than just look like maker 1 (even if I don't like maker 2 I'm surprised what did you say that then if it manages to make a big difference by having things that maker 1 didn't have, like a story mode, world creator, multiplayer [although this one already comes with self-explanatory problems.] etc.)
    The second thing I wanted to talk about is the case of the New Mario 2D series, in my opinion I think that having a new installment (instead of a Deluxe version of New U) was practically impossible from 2017 to the present, this is because Mario Maker came to completely replace it (Both original and sequel) It is very obvious that many fans and probably Nintendo itself think that because Mario Maker (especially Maker 2) already gives you the freedom to create both levels and worlds. Why would it be necessary to make a new installment of the New Super Mario Bros? if Super Mario Maker is already absolutely superior in everything?, don't get me wrong, I would be fascinated to see a New Super Mario Bros Switch or New Super Mario Bros 3 but it seems that this will not happen and possibly never will happen because of how unnecessary it is (both for the company as for many fans)
    (Sorry if I made some spelling mistakes on some words, ok, my English is not perfect at all).

    • @WumbleWasp
      @WumbleWasp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching the video I appreciate it.
      I wouldn't say my opinions are ignorant considering the hours I've sinked into the series. But yeah anyway, I would easily argue that (including the gameplay..) Ultimate isn't really that different from 4 in the grand scheme of things. It's really just a reworked engine. Most of the content is just retreading through older stuff, and the only new substantial thing here (world of light) is very mediocre and does not do a good job of replacing events, trophies, subspace etc.. So it kinda just sits there being a very underwhelming sequel as someone who spent so much time with Wii U & 3DS. But I also couldn't care less about the competitive side of smash, so maybe that makes a difference.
      With NSMBU - it's not the same as smash because it's a completely new game with completely new level design. In fact it's probably the best of the 'new' series, and easily does the most to evolve on the formula. It's not like Nintendo just took Wii, brought in the DS levels, and half a new world with Toadette or some bs and called it a day.
      Mario Maker doesn't really replace new games. I get the argument, but the 2D Mario series shouldn't necesarily be restricted to just the NSMB style. I mean, just look at the direction they took the series with the gameboy games. Or the donkey kong franchise. Or even non nintendo games like Rayman. There's no reason Nintendo couldn't make a new creative 2D mario game. A level creator doesn't replace one at all, especially considering the quality of 99.9999% of the levels you play in them. It's like saying new AAA games shouldn't be released because you can just play roblox or dreams or minecraft or something instead.
      And with Mario Maker 2. EVEN if you were to argue it's better than the 1st game, it's not like it does that much to push it above it. It's pretty much the same exact game with a few crumbs of new content and features scattered here and there. It doesn't do much to justify the '2'. Just like SSBU, it's built on the foundation of the previous game and doesn't really do much to evolve the franchise. For me, as someone who played the original games, I can't say I'm satisfyed with these sequels at all because they don't really offer anything new, anything I haven't really experienced years prior.

      @@WumbleWasp At the end of the day, I can understand if Ultimate was disappointing for you in almost many sections (If that includes the gameplay) I am also disappointed with Ultimate although in my case they are for different reasons (put more attetion on the characters but not the game modes or the lack of modes like All-Star mode among many others are one of many problems i have with the game.)
      With NSMBU I honestly disagree with his opinion, I understand that you want to find a difference but I can't find it at all beyond a single new Power-up, levels and bosses, because visually it looks like New Wii but rescaled in HD the visual difference between the first Super Mario and Super Mario Bros 3 it's way to bigger, it's not like they take the same game (Super Mario Bros 1) you add new levels and worlds and just call it "Super Mario Bros 3" thing that happened with Super Mario bros 2 original (that's why I don't count Super Mario USA because it's a Fake Super Mario made only for the public outside of japan) and in the worlds it's also a problem although it was understandable that in New DS and New Wii they had to reuse most of the established worlds (Grassland, Desert, Snow, Clouds, Volcanoes) I honestly see no excuse for wanting to be more daring and present more variety in the worlds in New 2 and New U (which is why Mario Land 2 is one of my favorite mario games in general by offering such bizarre worlds that it's a shame that none of the new games have dared to do something similar).
      and in the case of mario maker 2 I still have the same opinion I would like to see a new installment in 2D (I don't care if it's a New or not) and your example that no one should release an AAA game anymore because minecraft, Dreams, Roblox etc, exists is very solid. but it will be necessary to see if nintendo strives to at least make a new installment or they will simply go to the insurance in replacing it with Maker (apart from the fact that Maker 2's Story Mode could also be the last nail in the coffin for the New/2D Series by already offering levels created by nintendo itself but I'm not sure at all). and your disappointment with maker 2 I can understand but just like ultimate they are for different reasons (Maker 2 at least for me, for more interesting content it can offer, I honestly feel that the game is unfinished and that it has put many limitations on the player).
      and now that I remember in your conclusion you said that you had moved away from nintendo because of its lack of games (other than wii u ports) and because most of them seem disappointing to you and you started playing more on PC or on playstation, honestly I passed for the same situation and I felt something more positive than negative, in 2016 for example there was no nintendo game that interested me more than Planet Robobot, Mario Party Star Rush and getting a copy of luigi's mansion dark moon (because the first that I had was stolen from me) it was not there that I met the Indie audience, thanks to my distance from Nintendo I was able to learn about games like FNAF, undertale, Geometry Dash or Cuphead and everything that happened there was magical, and then we went on to 2018 where I must tell before that I hated playstation with a burning passion because in 2016 I had a very bad experience with 2 playstation fanboys who hated me because I liked nintendo and mario. My hatred was so great that when I heard someone talk about playstation I thought that he had mental problems and that he was a violent person, without a doubt those times were dark for me because I did not want to be friends with anyone because they liked playstation. but going back to 2018 was where I was able to give it a chance for curiosity and MY GOD, what a catalog (Ratched and clank, God of War, Final Fantasy, Uncharted, Ghost of Tsushima Etc.) everything was spectacular and believe me it was without a doubt getting away from Nintendo in 2016 and 2018 was a good decision as it opened me up to more games that I thought were garbage. And i understand your disappointment for nintendo in those years but honestly I feel that it was something more than positive (at least for me) since when the day comes when nintendo disappears from gaming or has to stop supporting them, at least I will have multiple doors from where I can go when that happens.

      There's virtually 0 reason to revisit 4 for mutlplayer, and that's actually not a slight against 4.

    The pandemic affected Nintendo much more than western companies because they are a traditional Japanese company. They had no work from home set up and they more or less lost a full year of development.
    With regards to your point about wanting separate hardware for home and handheld, that would result in even less games than what we have now. They would have to develop games for PS4 and PS3 level hardware. The strength of Switch isn’t that we purely get more games overall, but that we have more franchises represented in a single console. It’s more convenient and easier to invest when you only have one system.
    Also, game development is difficult and context matters. Retro hasn’t put out anything since 2014. Alpha Dream (M&L devs) went bankrupt. Three houses and wooly world (despite how you feel about them) were delayed multiple times. Simply combining the dev talent from both hardware teams doesn’t mean more and faster games, when everything is HD. Also, many of their games have longer DLC support due to their success, so that is another reason the next game may take longer.
    And for all the ports you raised issue with, the Switch was such a quick turn around from the Wii U (4 years) that it was always going to reuse those games. I mean the fact that they were so good to you is the very reason Nintendo couldn’t let them go to waste on Wii U. But now that the pandemic is mostly behind us, the latter half of 2021, this year and 2023 are showing us the true potential of Nintendo. Just more spread out so the titles don’t eat into each other’s sales. On average, 10-20 titles is the most we can expect, as opposed to before we they could get games out faster and release them close to each other as they were on different platforms.
    Something else I wanted to bring up was that you didn’t bring up third party support this time. I find it hard to argue that Switch’s isn’t massively better. just the huge number of indie titles alone is insane. You’ve got games like Skyrim, Dark Souls, DQ XI S, and more that never would have come to the Wii U.
    And in terms of power, Wii U was even weaker than the 360 and it was never going to get PS4/XB1 games even if it was successful. Switch also used the most powerful mobile chip it could at the time, being the Tegra X1. This was always the best case, but the next console isn’t too far off. Dev kits are out and info is pointing to a release next year.
    Ultimately, it’s okay that you feel a certain era was better than the 2nd to current years of the Switch. I’ll say that the Switch still has several years of support left from Nintendo (MP4, a new donkey Kong or Pikmin game), so while no individual year may live up to 2017 or “peak” Wii U 3DS days, I believe that at the end of the Switch’s life it will have at least surpassed the Wii U and 3DS individually for you.
    And sure, certain franchises like the sports games may not compare as well to previous entries, but that isn’t the last we’ll see of them and I think it’s good to look forward to the next entry.

      Ironically, at least looking in from the outside, it really seems like the pandemic impacted western devs a hell of a lot more than Nintendo. I mean, at least Nintendo had a somewhat consistent output, with polished games. Otherwise, 2021 was probably the worst year for AAA games... ever honestly.
      In terms of the handheld/home console balance - it's just a preference, because I know it wouldn't work in this day and age for Nintendo. Even a dedicated home console would not perform well against Xbox/PS BUT no there definietely would be a lot more games if there was a cheaper alternative to the home console + a reason to make them. If Nintendo had to support another system like a 4DS on the side to the Switch, I'm certain there would be a lot more Nintendo releases than what we've gotten with just the Switch. I think at the end of the day, putting aside what you were saying about game devs.. I just think it's really questionable why after merging handheld and home devs into one dedicated system - it has resulted in getting only a slightly higher output than what the Wii U got... Keeping in mind that the Wii U and Switch really aren't far apart from one another. They're both 'HD' with a very similar archeticture. Even if Nintendo just liquidated all of their handheld development teams and partners (lol) --- just having a sole focus on development towards one platform really should have resulted in a notably higher output of games than the Wii U, but it really hasn't been the case. nor does it make any sense to me.
      I have an issue with Wii U ports because they're ridiculously expensive. Unlike the Wii ports to Wii U. That said, my issue isn't the ports, but it's the 'new' games - most of which are heavily reliant on the Wii U/3DS games as a foundation, and don't do much to evolve themselves beyond that standard. Unlike every previous Nintendo gen's sequels.
      Now 3rd party is a can a worms that I really didn't want to open in this video. It's bad. The 3rd party support on Switch is really really bad. Yes you've got indies. Yes you've got 10 year old overpriced ports. Sometimes you've got that regional cloud game. But in terms of current gen games, I really can't think of many that released, and of the small handful that have, they aren't exactly great options over other systems. Especially Steam Deck now. Yes overall, it's better than the Wii U, but it's still not good imo... Either way, I wasn't talking about 3rd party support in this video anyway. I was talking about Nintendo.
      But the Wii U was definietely superior to the X360 in hardware. Ironically the PS3 probably had an edge not the 360. Not that I'm defending the hardware though.. I just think it's sad that the Wii U was seriously underpowered for it's time, and the Switch rolls around with near identical hardware for close to a decade.
      Anyway, I think the damage has been done for Nintendo at this point. After 2018, 2019 alone, I got really bored of them and just moved on. So even best case scenario, I doubt the Switch will ever surpass the 3DS/Wii U for me just out of priciple.

    • @Eggplant_Salad
      @Eggplant_Salad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WumbleWasp a couple of points. The Wii U had more RAM and a stronger GPU compared to the 360, but a weaker CPU. It was why a lot of third party ports performed worse. Second, it not only has a completely different architecture from the Switch, but was even different compared to the PS4/XB1. Switch has ARM, which is what the 3DS and mobile devices today use. Wii U used PowerPC which was very outdated compared to the x86 of current gen because they were devoted to ensuring perfect backwards compatibility with the Wii.
      The Switch in handheld is straight up more powerful than the Wii U and over twice as much in docked. It has double the RAM and a much stronger GPU, allowing it to run games like MK8 at 1080 and give Smash lighting and shadows in real time. It also actually supports modern engines, like UE4 and Unity, and APIs like Vulkan, allowing ports like Doom. I can guarantee you that Wii U would never have received Doom, the Witcher, or Fortnite.
      Porting from Wii U to Switch is not trivial, as seen by Botw’s launch performance. Though with time it was patched and now runs better than Wii U. That, along with many games having added content, is why Nintendo is charging $60 for games at launch. And they stay at that price because they keep selling at that price. Discounts and sales exist though, as long as you look for them. If the Wii U was a success, Nintendo would have done the same thing, instead of giving away games if you bought the system (how I got Pikmin 3).
      And if we compare titles, Mario tennis on Wii U was even worse, golf didn’t exist, there was no fire emblem, Metroid, Animal Crossing, or Pokemon. Sure you can compare nine of releases, but I owned both systems and didn’t buy every release. NES remix of the equivalent of an indie game, along with all the Mario vs donkey Kong games. The crypt of the necrodancer Zelda collaboration helps fill in those gaps anyway. Game and Wario isn’t comparable to a real Warioware for example.
      Also, 2016 for Wii U was definitely the worst year of any Nintendo system. 2018 and 2019 beat them though sheer quality alone. 2013 was also a dry year for Wii U. Really 2014 and 15 were fine, but MK8 literally didn’t have a battle mode, Smash 4 had no single player, and Splatoon had a very small campaign. So yes content was reused, but that’s because it’s smart and efficient to do so and was how they were able to hit the ground running for Switch in 2017. But the problem with a banger year like 2017 is that a lot of their dev teams all had to work on their next projects at the same time, which is why we’re still waiting for a new 3D Mario and Zelda. Combine that with the pandemic and we just have done unfortunate timing.
      I do think the latter half of this year and through the rest of this decade will be strong for Nintendo. If new hardware comes out by next March, we get a new DK, 2D Mario, Pikmin 4, MP4, and more, I think that will come very close to 2017 just in terms of software quality. I say, have hope because the future is bright now, especially since Nintendo is expanding with their second big development building next to their headquarters.

    • @WumbleWasp
      @WumbleWasp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The hardware differences are trivial though. I guess it's a handheld tbf, but it's not a massive increase in power. I also don't believe the things you're arguing like $60 ports. And you've just neglected to mention the 3DS too.

    • @Eggplant_Salad
      @Eggplant_Salad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WumbleWasp the architecture differences are significant. PowerPC was really outdated and it was a big deal when Apple finally transitioned from PPC to x86 with Intel back in the day. The same thing happened recently with their change to ARM for their Macs. It breaks a lot of compatibility and requires developers to make native versions again. The trade off is that everything is streamlined and more efficient for mobile tech.
      Also the Switch isn’t just a handheld. The fact that their clock speeds increase when docked (for RAM and GPU) allow for increased resolution and performance.
      And the reason I didn’t mention 3DS is because you’re comparing two consoles to one. At best the number of games would be equal, but that would only be true if they still made a mix of HD AAA games like BOTW AND PS2 era games on the 3DS.
      When everything is HD, it means everything takes longer. Games that could be completed on 3DS would take 1-2 years, now take 2-4 years minimum for EVERY game in every franchise. You also have to consider the time it takes to train the 3DS teams to work on HD games. They didn’t just transition instantly.

    What could make the Mario franchise in this current switch era better is if they make more mainline titles. The switch can really use another new mainline Mario game alongside Odyssey. Hopefully Nintendo does release an new mainline Mario rather it be 2D or 3D. No more spin offs, we need the mainline games back. The Wii U had New Super Mario Bros U and Super Mario 3D World. The 3DS had New Super Mario Bros 2 and Super Mario 3D Land. Both consoles at least had two new mainline titles which was fine. Even the Wii had Super Mario Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros Wii, and Super Mario Galaxy 2. That's three new mainline titles on one console. That was much better than what we have currently for new mainline Mario on switch.
    If we were to get another original New Super Mario Bros game on switch and an Odyssey 2, I would be very much satisfied, and this would truly do the Mario side of the switch justice.
