How can I manage hip arthritis with physiotherapy?
You might be avoiding exercise because of your hip pain but actually exercise such as strengthening and mobilising your hip may reduce your symptoms. Pain around your hip might weaken your muscles so strengthening them is a really good idea. Also, your hip might become stiff from lack of movement so you should stretch as well.
Why does physiotherapy improve hip arthritis pain?
By doing exercises, you'll restore the natural balance of your hip muscles making the hip work as it's supposed to. It may seem counterintuitive because you've got discomfort from hip arthritis but in time, exercises which strengthen and mobilise your hip will make you feel more comfortable. This will also preserve the life of your hip joint.
Why should I do hip exercises before getting hip replacement surgery?
If you've got hip arthritis you may eventually need a hip replacement. Hip exercises not only prolong the life of your hip joint and ease the pain in the run up to surgery but they also give you a solid foundation for the best possible start to your recovery after you’ve had hip replacement surgery.
How long will hip exercises take to improve my hip arthritis pains?
These exercises should take a fair few weeks for you to feel the benefits, so stick with them. If they increase pain, then ease off and do these movements more gently. You most definitely want to avoid high-impact sports with arthritis.
When should you speak to a physiotherapist about your hip pain?
It depends how bad your pain is. Gentle exercise can be enough to see a big difference in mild pain. However, if the pain in your hip is worsening, if it's affecting your sleep, if you are using increasing amounts of painkillers that aren't working, if it’s all getting worse, then definitely see someone.
    What exercises are recommended?
    1. Bridging
    2. Clam Shells
    3. Hip Abduction
    4. Sit to Stand
    5. Lateral Step Down

Hello Mark, Thanks for the detailed descriptions. I did these exercises today. Though I have been diagnosed with knee arthritis , I have a feeling that the arthritis has spread to the right hip and left shoulder. I do yoga too. I am 54 Years old, 80kg. 5.5" height. I have severe sciatica pain , knock knee , knee valgus in the right knee, and while walking my feet turn inwards so most times I loose balance while walking. Knees pop when I get up.. can u suggest a series of exercises please?

I would like to know what helps I could get with my bone to bone hip O.A.
Since December 2022 I was given 2x15 minutes conversations with a therapist, gave me ex.sheets and I was dismissed.
Than via my GP I was promised 4 more session, so far I only got 2 since middle of last year.
It feels like that NHS just want to refer to operation.
I expressed several times to my GP that I am trying to avoid surgery and just help me now but it;s just not happening.
I am doing Pilates, Dance/Zumba class for adults plus doing all the 4 movements from your video on a very regular basis.
Must be some more substantial help available instead of just operation?
What can I do and who can help me further?
    Thank you,
    Suzanne

THESE MOVEMENTS ARE MEANT for those in starting stages of the disease. But the time you discover a radiologist report that says you have extreme arthritis of hip, you can't do any of this. Perhaps you should point this out....

      Hi Katrina,
It's difficult to say as all cases are unique and we don't know the surgery you've had/are planning to have - however this page details the recovery timeline after a hip replacement which should provide an estimation: www.circlehealthgroup.co.uk/treatments/hip-replacement-surgery#aria-panel-8
For most cases, you can begin gentle exercises 2-6 weeks after surgery.
      Best wishes,
      Jordan

hello, I started experiencing groin pain on my left side. At the begining it was only periodically and when I made certain movements so I didn't think much of it believing it must be a pulled muscle. As time went by I started experiencing discomfort when walking so I decided to see my doctor. xrays of my hip revealed severe arthritis (I am 62). Would these exercises be good for groin pain as well?

What did u find out? I'm in the USA. 8 had my first injection from an orthopedic surgeon for hip osteoarthritis. I've already seen 1 "expert" telling u 2 do exercise X and someone else advising against doing that same movement =if u r trying 2 prevent surgery from becoming necessary. Just like all the conflicting diet advice! Annoying if this stuff is supposed 2 b EVIDENCE based as compared 2 opinion/theory/belief...
