Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is coming out soon and while some people love the box art I thought it was kinda boring. So I tried my best to make a new cover for the game!
I include Super Saiyans, Freeza, Kid Goku and everything! Do you think it worked out?

In terms of Marketing, the original cover art is WAY better than Marks. When cover art is being made, you have to consider the consumers. And more parents are likely to buy their children a game whose cover art features an innocent looking dude on a cloud, rather than a buff angry dude with no shirt on.

The original is an obvious redraw/ clip art from Goku on Nimbus that I swear I saw 20 years ago when I watched the first movie.

Don't feel bad. I too, didn't like the old cover art at all. Its dull and uninteresting. With this game covering a lot of history Goku, it could be a lot more elaborate. Besides a plain red background is playing too safe.

That's really not how disrespect works. If people thought he took a needlessly disrespectful tone when he voiced his opinion on the cover, him drawing his own cover doesn't really change that. I'm not one of the people who said that, but from the tweet he showed, it definitely could've been said more respectfully. If your mom baked a pie and Gordon Ramsey called your mom a dumb ugly fat fucking donkey, then made a way better pie, that really doesn't change what he said to your mom in any meaningful way. In all honesty, I think it makes the original comment seem even more mean-spirited and disrespectful, and I personally get the same feeling here with Mark and his comment + illustration.
His illustration is a fine improvement on the original, but doesn't that just make the tone of the tweet even less necessary? I'm just imagining an alternate timeline where the conversation around this topic was
Mark: I love Dragonball and all Dragonball art. The cover of this game could use some improvement, here's an illustration of my own concept for that improvement
And I know more than a couple people in his fanbase draw their own Dragonball inspired artwork... artwork that is less skilled than the cover of that game. So if your favorite Dragonball youtuber saw your artwork, I'd bet you he'd think even worse of it, in the same needlessly negative tone. Food for thought; we could all stand to be a little less negative, especially around the subjective topic of artwork.

So while I think the art he did for a poster would be better than the original one I actually like the basic look the actual cover has. I like the basic look because I always disliked complicated looks. The reason for me is one side is suppose to show who or what the game is about and the back side goes more in depth so I like it being pure basic on the front. Tho what he does for what he wants does look very very good. It's an opinion thing. People don't feel the same way about things I do and for those people I would say this cover is probably amazing. I understand the complaints and the liking of it. Yet anyone who says well you can't do something better is a fucking idiot. Just because someone doesn't like something doesn't mean they should have to be proficient in a that field. I don't like certain music but those people have talent I don't.

Anyone can say a piece of art sucks or doesn't feel right but it has more meaning coming from another artist than someone who doesn't understand the process. I ain’t gonna hate on the original, but to be honest, the original didn’t seem to have the flow or whatever you might call it some of the other covers do like for example Dragon Ball Xenoverse 1 and 2 have, I did however enjoy that it was simple and nostalgic to be encouraging for a cover, but for a game to cover the ENTIRE story of dragon ball, this was the right cover for it.
I agree that simplicity can sometimes work a lot better than complexity. I'm all for that, however, the game is called kakarot lol. I do agree with Mark that a game focusing on Goku's story should have a cover that evokes everything about him. The original cover was meant to be more iconic, while Mark's was more symbolic. I like Mark's better because I believe that symbolic approach represents the game better.

Because WE know that's Goku and what his story is, we dont need much for a cover. But the random dude or kid roaming the market who've barely heard of dragon ball only see some guy with weird hair on a piss cloud. It does nothing to challenge them and get their mind wondering what the game could possibly be.
This game is sticking strictly to cannon, that tells me its targeted at newcomers. A cover showing the main character doing nothing on a plain background isn't gonna catch their attention...well the striking red might but I've made my point.

While this is an amazing cover, I feel like the official one is more suitable for this game. It might be called Kakarot but Kid Goku on the cover is false advertising. This hardcore look is better for a fighter like Xenoverse or Tenkaichi, while a more lighthearted tone is perfect for an open-world adventure game.

@@LilT2o00 the other reason to buy physical disk, is because when you download games, you're basically renting it. So if they were to take games off of the market, and you need to download it again. You can't which means you will have to buy the game again or something like that.

Your version of the cover is cool but has a couple of flaws, in my opinion. If you know nothing about the game, it makes you think that kid Goku is a playable character and that the game stops with the Frieza/Freeza arc.
I agree. But at the time the video came out, it wasn't made clear if the game only covered Z or all of Dragon Ball. The title implied it would be from Dragon ball to Dragon ball super

I personally believe that simple cover art of goku on his nimbus ready for an adventure like the game going on goku’s adventure is quite charming and nice but I can understand if people want a little more out of the cover and are not impressed
I think if they did something as simple as show the landscape, almost as if he's rushing to save Gohan, Piccolo and Kuririn from Vegeta and Nappa, it would have worked better.
There's nothing wrong with demanding more from cover art. Everything now a days is a character posing or the face of the character.
That's what I felt too. It was reminiscent of the art we'd see on old school DVD/VHS covers. I think Mark's cover, while well drawn, is a bit too flat. It feels like images stacked on top of each other, and quite frankly, like a half-assed photoshop attempt. I also feel like this whole ordeal solidifies the fact that people nowadays need everything to be flashy, dramatic and over the top, and can't appreciate a simple, clean design.

@@babyjiren9676 Really my only critique is to leave Frieza out because that does feel a bit over board and it does kind of clutter the cover a bit (I mean this is just base game Cover Art so we don't have to go all out..), but overall yeah way better than the original boring cover. It also succeed's more successfully in capturing the buyer's eye. So plus on that.
The problem with the original isnt because it's "Simple.jpg", The problem is that it's "Feels Lazy.jpg" or I guess to be less mean "Feels Off".jpg = / as an artist myself (and not even a very good artist I noticed So many easy fixes that the OG cover could have done to easily avert this.) Like keep the red background hell but show the sprawling land Goku is flying over with the nimbus stretch out filling out the more downward portion of the case.
Or making the Red Background have some kind of stylish design (which honestly doesn't have to pop out either just be something besides one color) and make the Goku picture much bigger in size (because honestly the Original VG Cover just looks like they slapped clip art onto some color and called it a day.) also make the Cover title filled instead of see through (Like put the title on top of a metal plate or something dragon Ball z-y actually hell put the nimbus under that actually!)
Or also on the topic of the DVD Dragonball Case Covers you keep on referring to Which honestly if that's what they're going for or trying to invoke the feel of it completely fails at Because of funnily one thing (and it was mentioned in the video to..) but lol Composition.
1. The Big Vertical Title/Implied Borders: Which solves the weird amount of empty space the VG Cover has going on with it and also in a way is eye catching itself (Probably because your eyes has to readjust to reading the title Vertically if I were to theorize why.)
2. A Forward Facing Posed Character that mostly focuses on the Character Itself: despite maybe a bit of a lazy way at filling in that other portion of the Empty Space problem. It succeeds at not making it look cluttered. Now if we look at the VG Cover a bit this is probably what you're referring too. What I'm about to say is going to sound really weird, but maybe some people might get what I mean when I say Goku is not Forward Facing. (Even thought he clearly flying toward us!! man wym!?) Goku is actually angled forward. (Diagonally Forward? Something like that...) Giving us a kind of weird awkward leaning look and feel when compared to the DVD Covers Look which comes at you head on (or is centered around being face on confident or passionate with energy the only outlier I feel here maybe being the Frieza cover? ) {Side Tanget A thing that's probably just me though is that it feels like the Nimbus is more focused on than Goku. Like the Nimbus is fighting for more control of the cover than the actual character.}
3. The Color/Lighting Choice: This is going to be a pretty simple one to explain. The DVD Covers chose a pleasant color that's easy on the eyes and that's largely associated with the series. A nice light orange for the background. How the VG Cover messes this up if they were going for the DVD Feel is also kinda funny. they complicate the "Simple.jpg" color of the background with complicated Shadows and Lighting. Making the cover feel even more like a Lazy Photoshop cover.. Especially with the shadows outlining toward the outside of the cover. Last but not least they went with a very middling Orange color that can't decide if it wants to be dark toned or light toned which is further made more harder to look at with the Lighting and Shadows they threw on to the cover = /.
That's pretty much it though on why the VG Cover doesn't even remotely remind me of the DVD Covers I honestly like more... Kinda insulting in a way if that's what they were going for? That's just me though..
Overall tl;Dr: yeah Mark's cover is better and honestly has earned my Subscribe and + respect. And I like the DVD Covers over the game cover which I feel if it was going for it fails at.

This became the first poster Mark ever sold, and the first one I ever bought from him. That, along with the outstanding quality of Mark’s videos, makes me feel compelled to support him against the injustices he suffered from Toei Animation. Even though he wants to put it all behind him, the fact still stands that he didn’t deserve the punishment he took. They should never have done that to him - they don’t have the jurisdiction - but the damage has been done, and even if it may not change anything, the people want justice.
MARK DESERVES BETTER. It just brakes my heart, he’s such a passionate, hardworking guy. I’ve been a fan of his work for years now… it’s completely unacceptable what they did to his channel.

Same here xD I think it was the narrow chin flaring out as you move up that got me. Goku's body is larger and more broad than Vegeta's as a whole, so his face looks slightly more square to me. I dunno, maybe I'm thinking too much lol

I agree. While it's an nice drawing it doesn't resemble Toryama's design of Frieza imo. Mark looks like he went for a more "realistic" interpretation giving him pronounced cheekbones etc. I prefer the more simple look because as you said it can end up making him look like more like a movie monster rather than the character. All in all, it's a great piece it just seems to have a lot of creative liberties taken.

I have one BIG problem with your cover for the game. Don't get me wrong, I love your art-style! My problem lies with your kid Goku drawing. The game is called "Dragonball Z Kakarot" and the keyword being "Z". This means the game won't be having any moments from the original Dragonball series at all. Besides this fact, many fans who grew up with the show, have never watched the original show. Therefore it wouldn't make sense to put that version of kid Goku on the cover. However! The Goku leaving his space capsule does make a lot of sense, since we learned from Raditz, that Goku is an alien sent to Earth, and this we learned in "Z". (Episode 12 of the original Dragonball run, it is questioned by Oolong if Goku was an Alien. Even in episode 25 by Krillin. Oh well, guess we just might as well forget those important facts as usual.)

I think there’s one thing which could’ve possibly improved the poster:
A softly drawn, faded face of Goku in his Great Ape form in the background, then the moon would make total sense

@@Be-Dillon That's true but saying frieza is what makes goku implies that frieza is a character that molded goku into who/what he is today which isn't technically true.
At first I strongly disagreed because I thought the transformation was more than enough to show Goku’s Saiyan side but then I realized this game is literally called Kakarot, it’s a game about Goku’s quest. Although I still disagree, I think that focusing too much on Goku makes the cover more boring, especially when most of the art of Goku is of him as a kid who you don’t even see or play as. I think that showing where he started and the legendary transformation is more than enough. Also Freiza is just a really iconic character in DBZ, he the one that caused this transformation and was solely responsible for the eradication of the Saiyan race. So showing the Saiyan races worst enemy and the race’s hero says a lot more about about the story of Z and character besides “He’s a Saiyan.” Also that glow coming from Frieza’s eyes making Goku’s skin glow pink looks so dope.
Edit: I rewatched the video and actually saw a picture posted that has just what I’m talking about if you’re confused, it’s someone who poster the cover twice but blended in the orange are the Characters our protagonist interacts with. Focusing more on the story than just the character of Goku. I especially love the second cover, literally the same except a blue color that separates the characters which is also a color that Goku wears.
Edit 2: Although I really wouldn’t dislike it I just prefer this.

And how much sense does it make to call the game Kakarot when you get to play as not just Goku, you get Teen Gohan, Piccolo, Vegeta, Adult Gohan, Trunks and who knows what other playable characters are we getting.
Calling it Dragon Ball: Kakarot makes as much sense as taking something like Pirate Warriors 4 and calling it One Piece: Luffy.

Yeah, I guess young Namek saga Gohan might've worked in it's place, or maybe Gohan bottom right, Vegeta bottom left. The whole name revolves around the Namek saga and the Saiyan legacy, so showing Vegeta and Gohan with Goku in the middle helps with the idea that they are the legacy of the Saiyans and it's Kakarots turn in the spotlight, while hinting at the future for Gohan (til Buu saga.)
