I really like how the Ultra Instinct redraw looked, since Ultra Instinct is a Technique and not a Transformation, (I'm pretty sure) the aura that looks more similar to when they flared their Ki in their base form but more violent due to the heat the technique gives off makes complete sense and brings it together, story-wise and just visually. Very pleasing.
Honestly, the new art style introduced in DBS Broly might just be Toei's signature style from now on. The design has also been applied to One Piece and it's such a joy to look at. Color pops out, the looser design helps the animators a bunch, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if the design style goes beyond Dragon Ball and One Piece to other Toei series.
@@shawnsuckstm3353 its going to sound weird, but imo the new art style makes the characters look young and not as mature. I just hate how so many modern anime look like plastic. Why is everyone’s face shiny? That’s why I loved the tournament of power’s look. Felt like what DBZ really would’ve been in the new era
One reason might be that it looks modern. If you browse a random selection of anime you can most likely find the once created recently by looking for this style. It might just be nothing more than a message: "Hey look this is a new product."
wow!!! Everyone did absolutely incredible but 8:52 was my favorite!! I'm a huge fan of 90's anime and I love the color pallettes back then and grainy texture to the art, instead of the clean digital and washed out look anime has nowadays.

probably not because how they made anime back then had a lot of different components thrown into it that took a lot of time. Knowing corporations they don’t like taking their time
I didn't have a problem with the art style in the ToP or Broly movie, but I definitely had a problem with the artstyle in the first few arcs. I'm just glad it improved.
I've always thought Z looked better, although super definitely got a lot better around the ToP arc. I'm not a huge fan of the really heavy lines they use in ToP but at least it is distinctive and it looked better than the early stuff (even the rushed schedule aside). Mark did some really great work here picking up on some of the reasons *why* I like Z more - things I probably couldn't have picked up on myself. Funnily enough, one of the things it really makes me ache for is for them to finally release a high quality version with the English dub (including score). Dragon boxes with at least the option for funimation dubs and Faulconer score, *please*.
These stills are absolutely magical. Hats off to you guys. Yall captured the vicious essence of Z while properly troubleshooting the issues with bringing the art style forward. 11/10.
looks like a layer of noise, a transparent grunge texture set to about 5% opacity, and 3-4 passes that target tone and color balance. Specifically bumping up the blacks and muting some of the colors on the brighter end of the spectrum. All totally doable with adjustment layers, just gotta poke at it till you get "the look" right.
I love that drawing of Frost, because it makes him look as evil as he actually is. The way frost was drawn in the anime isn't bad but he didn't look evil to me. Your drawing of him also gives him that evil tone but doesn't make him look as evil as Frieza which is good because I think we can all agree that Frieza is way more evil than Frost
Frost not "looking" evil might've been the original intention. I mean, remember, when we're first introduced to him, he's presented as a good person, the exact opposite of Frieza. Sure, later we find out he's a scumbag just like Frieza, but when we're initially introduced, he's pretending to be a good guy because that's the persona he puts on for Universe 6.
@@beancheesedip8337 but that's when he is in his first few forms, once he gets in his final form, it's revealed that he is evil, so I feel like he should look evil in his final form

"Never in my life have I needed something so much and never known until I received it." What I wouldn't give to see the whole DBS series in this art style...
All i want before i go from this planet for ever is an AI that can transform the entire dragon ball series to a certain style, specially Super to the greatest Z episodes.
15:02 I think the reason these Saiyans were skinny was because of the background they were given. IN their universe, universe 6, the Saiyans were more peacekeepers than warriors. A more relaxed lifestyle due to not having to be conditioned by Frieza and bloodline before. Because in their universe Frost is "leading the universe to peace" or something. When in reality, compared to Frieza's more upfront tactics, Frost was doing underhanded deals and sort of being a background tyrant
they were peacekeepers, which means they were warriors. Just because they were pirates didn't mean they led a peaceful life, hell, they were essentially the police/army, Cabba's life was just as fraught with violence as Vegeta's, the only difference Cabba was fighting criminals and fabricated gangs, Vegeta was wiping out planets for the sake of Freeza.
Something about that old 90's look will always resonate with me, it's so good and so lively. I never realized how much the de-muscling of the cast bothered me until I got to the first Universe tournament. I know it's not the end of the world but something about seeing the whole cast with bodies made for fighting as well as the old color pallets used for DBS : Broly really brings back the kinetic power in each shot and frame. Also THANK YOU for aging Trunks and Goten, I can't stand them still looking like small children with the years passing.
11:49 I love how even though it was Capcom who was influenced by Akira Toriyama; Capcom has delivered some of the most iconic and timeless sound effects to ever exist which are used in almost every content creators' soundbank. Including Toei. That chime was Megaman X5's Start screen. X's 1st armor was heavily influenced by Saiyan/ Frieza Force armor, same goes for alot of the concept art at the time.
Perfect re-designs for every single pic. Z's style is Zeno level, while Super's is Oolong level. I was born in '92, so as a little kid in the late 90s I grew up watching Z and thinking about how cool it looked stylistically. Was hyped when Super was announced years back, but seeing the art style change to make everyone look like cheap knockoff action figures of themselves really disappointed me. Yeah the story wasn't great in Super, but the style that made the series as popular as it is would have dramatically softened the blow for me.
Yup Super was a dissapointment in all the episodes only 3. Were amazingly done. And by that i mean not like a few scenes but the entire episode. And all 3 were in the ToP.
@@shotto_z4790 Yeah I know, just lamenting how bad most of Super from the beginning up to the end of the T.O.P. was. I like what they're doing in the Granola arc
I just want muscles. The grainy, gritty look you talked about would be a close second, but if they insist on everything being bright and shiny, I at least want characters with muscles.
Tbh I think its more about getting the right proportions and the scale of the physique right. Dbz had muscles but they much very aesthetically pleasing because they paid attention to symmetry and proportion of the physique.
The colours have always been my biggest gripe with Dragon Ball Super's art style. I felt so validated when you made it a recurring theme in the video haha.
All of you are incredible artists and each approach achieved the 90's style almost perfectly, great job! Regarding the coloring in Super, I think that the very bright and vibrant style is a thing that a lot of new animes are falling into, for example, the new shaman king anime looks extremely bright to me and that ends up being a little distracting. I would love if in new anime they used more filters to make it a little darker, more pleasing to the eyes (so many people like 90's anime aesthetics for this reason)
Not gonna lie, the DBZ artstyle looks awesome compared to what we got in super, the Broly movie was pretty lit tho and it actually had pretty damn good animation and art, unlike many episodes in the super series which kinda threw me off a lot, it would look much better in this old artstyle
2:25 it was explained in db that saiyan stays kids for a long time and then suddenly there growth sprouts explodes and they grow up faster, and also they dont age fast too.

One of the big missing for me is the scratches and blood cuts, like when Majin Vegeta is talking to Goku about family and love, both are full of little details like plenty of scratches on the face, body.... All this is really missing in DBS, even after very tough fights, they don't seems hurt.
I know the animation is a major downgrade but don't miss out on some incredible iconic moments of super it's not worth entirely skipping if you want to watch less then just watch the first 2 movies then jump into the universe 6 vs 7 arc trust me it's not worth skipping entirely just because of animation

Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. There’s just something more lively about the original Dragon Ball Z style. It looks more warm, more (as weird as this sounds) life like. Ever since Yo! Son Goku And His Friends Return and Hatchiyack, the art is more crisp, but doesn’t look as lively. Idk maybe it’s just me.
I thought Broly just looked better because it was a movie that they had put more time and resources into......dang, that one change makes such a difference
To emulate the impotent aura of UI in the old style. You could add the rainbow sparkles used when Gogeta killed Janemba. I think that would make it look epic.
Nah,I disagree completely, the aura in Super look way more intimidating, this aura is too simple and just looks like Ultimate Gohan’s aura but they tried 🤷♂️
To be honest it kinda didn't deliver that much, ultra instinct's aura is supposed to be different, like veryyyyyy different than other auras that takes a traditional spiky outline. I think it looks good, but it should've looked more special, like a bit of lightning here and there
While it's not cannon, they did show what SSJ Kaioken in Z would look like when Goku fought Pikkon. The Kaioken aura completely covers up the SSJ aura in that instance so technically there would be no blue showing here.
You guys made me remember where we all came from and how far we come with this series. Love you for that, all the characters looked amazing and definitely hit the mark👏👏
This video really puts into perspective how much the series and Toriyama's art style in general has changed over the years. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I must say this era of art is my favorite the series has ever looked. DBS: Broly was the best bit of Dragonball animation we've had in years, just amazing to watch the whole time, even the calm scenes. The characters were way too skinny and cartoony in Super to me, I legit had no idea Goten and Trunks were supposed to be preteens, they look like 5 year olds as stated in the video. And Gohan looks like he reverted back to his preteen days, wtf? Great work on the vid guys, the art was awesome and I wish they'd go back to the DBZ or even DBS: Broly style again.
All of this looks incredible, the only complaint I have about the art work is the ultra instinct goku aura. I feel that the man himself is drawn to perfection, but the aura doesn't seem as over the top as I feel it should've, maybe something similar to the original super saiyan transformation would've been better, I don't know. Keep up the amazing work!

@@b0xE_ yeah I agree, hate the new art style
I really like how the Ultra Instinct redraw looked, since Ultra Instinct is a Technique and not a Transformation, (I'm pretty sure) the aura that looks more similar to when they flared their Ki in their base form but more violent due to the heat the technique gives off makes complete sense and brings it together, story-wise and just visually. Very pleasing.
Mastered ultra instinct does not give off any heat...

Such beautiful work! I love the style!!!!
@Fax imma assume this is self advert
Honestly, the new art style introduced in DBS Broly might just be Toei's signature style from now on. The design has also been applied to One Piece and it's such a joy to look at. Color pops out, the looser design helps the animators a bunch, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if the design style goes beyond Dragon Ball and One Piece to other Toei series.
Yeah, I really love that art style, hope it's used in more shows in general, looks so nice
Im Personally not a fan of shintanis style
@@shawnsuckstm3353 its going to sound weird, but imo the new art style makes the characters look young and not as mature. I think it works well for characters like goten and trunks, but for the majority I would rather them be drawn and animated in the Z movie era of designs where they look older and more adult-like.

The dude doesn't wants to be cancelled bro. Just.
This video only makes DB super much worse in comparison. Now, not only we know that DBS animation SUCKS, turns out that the art style and other related choices they made is also poor. I love this video.

That’s why I loved the tournament of power’s look. Felt like what DBZ really would’ve been in the new era
Fr and how they all have round faces and feel like they were drawn with colors its hella wack
One reason might be that it looks modern. If you browse a random selection of anime you can most likely find the once created recently by looking for this style. It might just be nothing more than a message: "Hey look this is a new product."
Nah, the ToP look looked way too digital with its black shading everywhere.

Maybe but with how hard it is to make this era of animation toe will probablly never go back to it.
probably not because how they made anime back then had a lot of different components thrown into it that took a lot of time. Knowing corporations they don’t like taking their time
This was super cool. While I never had a problem with Super’s art style, the differences between it and Z is striking.
I didn't have a problem with the art style in the ToP or Broly movie, but I definitely had a problem with the artstyle in the first few arcs. I'm just glad it improved.
@@jantheking7028 at least the animation will be better in dbs season 2
Could we possibly get a tutorial for making a DBZ filter and generally mimicking the overall style?
Yes please
Probably has one on youtube but you know, better to see it by a professional
Someone needs to apply that filter throughout the DBS series. Now THAT would be awesome.
looks like a layer of noise, a transparent grunge texture set to about 5% opacity, and 3-4 passes that target tone and color balance. Specifically bumping up the blacks and muting some of the colors on the brighter end of the spectrum. All totally doable with adjustment layers, just gotta poke at it till you get "the look" right.
@@Ketsuegg I want to know what adjustments to make not ‘poke around’
The art style is perfect! I personally love how the shading is. It shows the og db style that is perfect. I wish they wouldnt change the look.
Bruh, y'all gotta do this more often, 18 minutes ain't enough!
Can't wait till next week!

Same there was another video with ui goku as the thumbnail it was amazing
All i want before i go from this planet for ever is an AI that can transform the entire dragon ball series to a certain style, specially Super to the greatest Z episodes.
@Fax stop.
I NEED that 90's DBZ filter effect
I would have liked to see an attempt to recreate the unique "dots" of the UI aura in the classic style.
Maybe like the genkidama dots but smaller
11:49 I love how even though it was Capcom who was influenced by Akira Toriyama; Capcom has delivered some of the most iconic and timeless sound effects to ever exist which are used in almost every content creators' soundbank. Including Toei.
That chime was Megaman X5's Start screen. X's 1st armor was heavily influenced by Saiyan/ Frieza Force armor, same goes for alot of the concept art at the time.
Well, you've committed this much. Might as well redraw the entire series, team. Great work Mark and friends.

My soul is glowing. I love this new series you guys are doing, absolutely stunning designs. Especially Caulifla.... just, wow.
@@wraithking3749 All 3 episodes you're referring to were overseen by Takahashi I believe. He and Toyotaro remain the most faithful to DBZ's art style.

2:25 it was explained in db that saiyan stays kids for a long time and then suddenly there growth sprouts explodes and they grow up faster, and also they dont age fast too.

not even close compaired to dbs, dbs is way better at showing the angelic feel that ki just looks like every day ki

Well blue has a larger and more overpowering aura so it’s plausible that it’s still visible
So far the only one I didn’t like the change was the Blue Kaioken aura, love the artwork more though
