Dolly was on the Porter Wagner Show and did duets with him, also. She agreed to stay for five years. Porter was upset when she wanted to leave and go solo. She went home and wrote this in one night. After hearing the song, Porter understood and they remained close friends. Knowing this makes it so much more emotional. Dolly always appreciated Whitney’s cover and joked about how much money she took to the bank off it❤️

Whether she sings in English or Spanish to me from the '70s '80s '90s and the '2000s she was the best female singer. Imho. Unfortunately Parkinson's disease has robbed her of her ability to perform.

Just a few years after this song was recorded, my wife’s father died unexpectedly. They were extremely close. He was only 44. She was only 24. After we went to the funeral, we were sitting in the car and I turned on the radio. This song began playing immediately. My wife broke down again, telling me that this was her father’s way of saying goodby and that it was OK to move on. I’ll never forget that moment and this version will always be my favorite.

Dolly is a storyteller in the Smoky Mountain tradition. We Southerners call her Miss Dolly...always...because she is just one fine human being. She’s written thousands of songs and many of them were made huge by other people. Perhaps Carol King and Willie Nelson are the only ones as prolific. She has given away more books than anyone has, employs about 5K people with her company (most from the poor Appalachian area where she was raised), and genuinely cares for those who cross her path. Very humble despite her successes. I recommend Coat of Many Colors because that song embodies her values about more than any other. So good.

Listening to to Dolly sing "I will always love you" is like listening to your lover whisper in your ear in the bedroom, while listening to Whitney Houston sing "I will always love you" is like hearing someone belt it out in the front yard so the whole neighborhood can hear. Both are great, but I prefer the former. Whitney is powerful and Dolly is intimate, authentic, and a joy to listen to.

I've always said that there's Dolly's original and then there are the karaoke efforts, including Whitney's.
I don't know about the USA but in pub karaoke, in the UK, we get many a half cut females warbling the Whitney way.
A bit like 'Hallelujah' which was ruined, by the warblers and shouters, who all missed the point of Leonard Cohen's excellence and meaning - although KD Lang and Rufus Wainwright did get the meaning, and the intention, of what Cohen wrote and sang.

Some others songs to show her range would be "9 to 5" (it was a great movie too), "Jolene", "Coat of many Colors" (about her growing up in poverty in the Smokies), "Here You Come Again", "Wildflowers". Dolly is a genius. There is another song called Jolene which was another big hit for her. She wrote that song and this one on the same day!! The guy whose show she was on back then got a bit angry about her leaving to go on her own, so she wrote this to him. He sued her and they had a recording company together that recorded all their duets, so it took a while to settle the lawsuit. He said some unkind things about her for a while, but she did nothing wrong. Several years later He fell on hard times financially and had to sell his musical catalog. She bought it and gave it back to him as a gift. They became friends again and when he was in the hospital just before he passed. Dolly would visit him and play and sing for him. She is widely known as the sweetest most generous woman. When the floods etc. destroyed large swaths of Tennessee, she gave away hundreds of thousands of dollars to people to help them rebuild. She is 74 now and still performing. Check out Jolene and also coat of many colors. That one is about her life growing up. Enjoy!!

I’m not a big country fan and Dolly isn’t my favorite musician. But I can’t think of a more admirable and fascinating person on the planet. She is amazing to do what she has done in so many industries at such a high level. She has never changed even though she has massive amounts of money.

There's been times where this song, Dolly's version, has brought a tear to my eye. Not because I was sad or heartbroken, but because somehow, through her voice alone, Dolly can make you feel what she's felt. It's beautiful.
'Jolene' is another example of the ability Dolly has to allow you to feel her emotion through her voice. Hope you listen to it too.

Dolly Parton had a tv program back in the 80's. I remember that she would close every episode by singing her song (that she wrote) "I Will Always Love You".

Dolly has a way with words-Once when I was sick I listened to most of her audio book about her life. It was so real and sounded just like she was talking to me.
It says a lot about a song that so many people want to sing it.

Welcome to the women of Country in the 1970s. The higher the hair, the closer to God. 😊 Dolly did a great job on this, Whitney Houston took it to another level. I love both. Jolene and Coat of Many Colors are two of hers to hear.

In 1966 or 67, Dolly became a regular performer on The Porter Wagner Show. They fought like cats and dogs (Dolly's words). When her contract was up, Dolly was ready to move on. Porter wanted her to stay, even going so far as to tell her she owed it to him. She wrote this song in one night hoping it would explain how she felt and how grateful she was to him. She sat him down and sang it for him. But he was just too angry. She left the show and went out on her own. Porter actually sued her for the rights to the songs she wrote while under contract with him. And he won the suit. Her songs were legally his. Years later, Porter was sick and broke and mostly forgotten, except in Nashville. He was selling all those songs that he had won. Dolly Parton bought all her songs back from him. Dolly has a beautiful heart full of compassion and forgiveness. She felt no sense of justice or revenge. After buying the songs from him, she gifted them back to him.

Finally someone listens to the original verson of this song. She wrote it to Porter Wagner who she was under contract with. This song was to let him know she was leaving his show to go out on her own. It took a law suit to get out. I guess nice didn't work. She sang it in the movie The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. It's basically a musical comedy. Not for children. Try Islands in the Stream, a duet with Kenny Rogers.

The first time I saw Dolly Parton was when I was 13 years old and caught her on the Porter Wagoner show in the early 70s. I wasn't a country music fan, but it didn't matter, because being a young boy, I couldn't get past her beautiful appearance and that figure. Oh my! Since then, I've realized that Dolly is so much more than big hair and big other things. Song writer, performer, philanthropist and just a beautiful person inside and out. Love you Dolly.

Dolly Parton was and is a brilliant businesswoman. She was the original Cadri B as far as her physique. She had breast enhancement because she knew they would bring her attention. Same with her hair. Its all wigs. But, because of it she got noticed. THEN people realized how well she wrote, played guitar and performed.
This is part of why she has always said: "I am the realist fake person you'll ever meet"! :)

There are SO many great Dolly songs.. Here's some others for you to consider: "Jolene," "Little Sparrow," "Silver Dagger," "Down from Dover" (be prepared to cry), "The Grass is Blue," "Light of a Clear Blue Morning," "Early Morning Breeze" (so slick), "Coat of Many Colors" (probably the song that defines her career), "Islands in the Stream," "My Blue Tears," "Tomorrow is Forever" (with Porter Wagoner)...the list goes on and on and on and on. She is the best songwriter working today.

When I see this video it takes me back in time to when she wrote it. She is singing that song to Porter Wagoner a huge country star at the time who introduced Miss Dolly Parton to the world and from their she took over her own destiny and has been a blessing to humanity in everyway. She wished him Love. Just so touching her words.
