I had a Gerber suspension when I worked as an engineer on a ferry in Alaska. After a month of use it started rusting and tools started breaking. I ended up purchasing a Leatherman Charge TTi. I used it for a year in a marine environment, making minor repairs on my bus as a city bus driver, and now in my work as a Paramedic. I have used it to repair my ambulance, medical equipment, and to break into homes of patients who are unable to unlock their doors. I now have added the Leatherman Raptor to my "utility" belt. These tools with a good flashlight are a must in my line of work and I never get on my ambulance without them. P.S. my flashlight is a MARATAC 2xAA.
That's a great idea and ideally MT scissors should be able to cut through tough stuff like zip ties and lightweight gasket material without being destroyed.
Good to have you back!!! Gerbers recent stuff is really compelling. And yes, particularly with leatherman, prices are insane. Now a standard wave is 90$!? I got mine on ‘sale’ for 70$ so sad
Glad your back. The prices go up on all knives and multi tools, and everything even firearms that's reviewed by big popular channels. I remember when the Gerber strong arm was around $50. Now its upwards of $70-$80. Its kinda ridiculous, ya know? Keep up the great work, also glad your feeling better. Can't wait to see what you have in store for us
@@GearObsession you are very welcome. I've been with you since the beginning and you are one of the few who stayed who they are. All the other TH-cam channels have gotten YT "Famous" and won't even take the time to reply back. But not you, I speak for all the subs you have THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR CONTENT AND EVERYTHING YOU DO TO BRING US THESE REVIEWS.
5:40 Pinch points! One of the reasons I don't carry the Leatherman Charge AL anymore. That and Leatherman's horrible 2d Philips head drivers. And even worse their soft flat (proprietary) driver bits. I've carried a multitool daily since 2000 or 2001. The first was a Leatherman PST II. I use them at home and work multiple times daily. I now carry the Victorinox SwissTool X. Thanks for the vid Fred!
@@saniboy9940 All depends on specific models. The Leatherman Wave and Charge lines are very comparable to Vicrorinox X tools. These are all full size tools compared to the Victorinox Spirit models, for example, which are lighter, smaller, and more ergonomic. I can't speak to those. I have carried the Leatherman Wingman, for about a day or two. I didn't think it was built very well. I put my little Leatherman Juice C2 and even the tiny little Leatherman Squirt above it as far as build quality. You get what you pay for. The name brand fullsize tools are going to be $100+ generally. I have also carried the Gerber (I think it was the 400). Good for the money. I don't like all the plastic parts Gerber uses. Also, like Fred mentioned, Gerber doesn't make great use of space in their multitools. I also hate having to deploy the pliers, open the handles, find the tools, open the tools, close the handles, and retract the plier head again (to lock the tool) every time I want to use the knife for example. It really comes down to personal preference, tools selection, and money.
I got one of these at Wal-Mart for $13 because they had the old style on sale and they had the NXT in the wrong display spot, so he gave it to me for the clearance price!
I bought this last year and it's okay, it is perfect for pocket carry, not too thin and not too heavy but I felt like it was missing something and I didn't like at how far the handles retracted on it. I finally bought the Gerber diesel on Amazon not long after I bought the NXT. I made a list of all the tools I wanted on a multitool, and the Diesel had them all except an awl, but the knife comes to a very sharp, pointy tip that it can double as an awl. Anyway I'm really happy with the Diesel, it's just like the MP600 except it doesn't have the wire crimper and a serrated knife, but it has a saw and scissors instead and I love the one hand opening system. I also have the Center Drive but it has only 13 tools and only good for the work place, the Diesel has more and it works everywhere for me, it's my edc.
NXT I received for Christmas is neigh impossible to fold out a tool. Oil helped a tad. WIsh I had a star drive small enough. I don't suppose you know the size of that torx? My thinking is if I loosen a smidge that will free up the tools to swing.
Soo this seems like it had an upgraded Phillips, scissor and awl. They added a ruler, file and pocket clip and a smaller flathead. The original had 2 blades serrated and straight, seems like they just combined them. They got rid of the saw. They also made it lighter and thinner.
Hey, glad your back but no package showing..... Lol That is not good them being that loose, that's a deal breaker for me. I still have mine I got for a birth day gift 20 years ago and still edc it. Good review Fred, so glad your back!!!!
I am not tool expert but I do feel Leatherman is praised a lot just off the brand name and the idea it is harder to afford, equals quality or being apart of a elite tool group while I really do not think get the value you get with other brands that are more affordable.
Hey Fred. First of all yes welcome back. I did miss your Friday reviews of the sharp and shiny. You might want to tighten up the pivot screws to see if that helps with tool retention. Leatherman stuff will always be the industry standard in MT's it seems but their stuff has gotten really expensive in recent years. An unfortunate part of designing and manufacturing in the US. I'm glad I bought the Wave and the Charge TTI some years back when they were still somewhat affordable. Looking forward to more videos. Stay well. ATB Doug.
Great review. That Phillips is just awesome. Nice square shank and look at the reach. Wingman is $60 now. That Ganzo is a great alternative though. Good quality and it comes with a bit set.
Great vid, as always... The new mic on the camera seems directional, which makes all the sounds towards your hands a lot louder than your voice... But other than that, great stuff, keep it comin'!
My Ganzo only cost me 18 bucks, it's got a great saw, more cumbersome to carry than the Suspension NXT. Gerber no saw but serrations on blade can make notches. Like the reamer/awl on the NXT.
The NXT isnt Bad but it is definetely a Light Use Tool...Or maybe One for a User who wants to Stash One in a Vehicle or Tackle Box and Not worry about losing it due to Cost. I have noticed the Same issue with snapping the Pliers Shut and tools deploying Slightly..You are also correct about the Clip..Its Ok but dont expect a lot out of it
What I did when I bought my next multitool was make a list of the tools I wanted on a multitool. I could never get them all on a leatherman plus their steel is very soft except their knife blades, anyway, I made a list and the Gerber Diesel had what I wanted so I bought it and I'm very happy with it. It's in my pocket right now as I type this!!
I bought my Diesel on Amazon for $60 CA but only because the package was damaged, sometimes you get good deals that way on Amazon. But I'm so glad I got it because it has everything I wanted in a mt. The MP600 is used by the military and its on amazon for $66 but that thing is indestructible and has flatheads, Philips, knife, file. Everything for things around the house or car that needs fixing. Unfortunately, the more tools, the higher the price. Gerber Dime is $29 but doesn't have as much tools. The NXT is $40 and it's a newer multitool with 15 tools, I would take that one over the Dime or Suspension any day. Stay away from the cheap Leatherman knock-offs, they are TERRIBLE!!! I bought a couple of generic, Chinese mt's and they suck!!
And it seems to me that Leatherman's quality might be going the opposite direction. I bought a Juice S2 about 5 years ago and the scissors blades had nasty burrs that I had to deal with before they would work right. It was on sale and about half today's price back then but a customer shouldn't have to correct their bad QC.
Yep, Leatherman has gone crazy with their prices. They've gone up pretty much across the board and a few models have nearly doubled in price in about 5 yrs. Very annoying!
That knife wasn’t very sharp trust me. I’ve been sharpening my own knives and that thing is super dull compared. That’s one thing I hate about gerber is their multitool knives they are never that great. My best grylls multi tool knife wasn’t very good the edge was all jagged.

Thank you so much!!!
I think a better test for scissors is how cleanly it cuts sewing thread. I've had many scissors that could easily cut paper but not thread.
I will remember that in my next review when testing scissors. Thank you!!!
That's a great idea and ideally MT scissors should be able to cut through tough stuff like zip ties and lightweight gasket material without being destroyed.

Between Leatherman and Swisstool/spirit, which is better plier? Which steel is softer? I need to know before buying any. Oh, and Gerber too

I love my gerber nxt it always get the jib done and it does go the distance for $30
Great to have you back Fred
Doesn't NXT just mean "Next"??? (the next model of the suspension)
Friskers owns Gerber, also you can tighten the screws to stop the knifes coming out.
Kristyanna Virgona - Gerber owns Fiskers. Gerber purchased them.
@@harrydaniels1613 sorry, but Kristyanna is correct. Fiskars owns Gerber.

Those old slide-out lineman's-style Gerbers had a lanyard loop that you could flip out from the handle like any other tool in the handle.
I have it and I am delighted with the quality
Just picked one up a couple weeks ago and i like it very much. Great review. Thanks for your time brother...
Yay! Glad to have you back!
It is the Golden Age of multi-tools.
Thanks for this one Fred! I've really missed the way you look at some of these tools - especially when I'm trying to decide... Good review!
20:40 tools should be made like some knives out there that lock in both open and closed position.
Have you seen the Roxon Storm multi-tool? Another good off-brand one.

Good honest review. I like the Ganzo best but if they would just add a pocket clip it would be fantastic
Fred, I'm going to go budget here, so is the Wingman a good plier like the wave? Just the plier part that I'm asking, exclude the wire cutter
Didn't even know there was a 3rd option. I'm giting the ganzo

It is Gerber NXT. It means Gerber next.

the Ganzo is $30.00 on Gearbest
What is the marking on the black part under the cross screw driver
On the NXT
Fred, I’m thinking about buy a Multi Tool. I’m not sure what kind to buy. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I don’t think I’d buy this.
It all depends on your needs and budget. I feel Ganzo is the best bang for your buck.
Thanks Fred. I looked on Amazon it’s well over a $100 in Canada

I carry the sidekick leatherman. In my opinion is the best
Another great video! I like the leatherman better
I don't see a task that requires you to quickly close the pliers like that so i doubt it would be a real world problem.

NXT = Next
Wow I paid like 23-24 for it a few months ago I think
Crazy right? Not sure why Leatherman has raised their prices so much.
Gear Obsession - That's because Leatherman is better. There's an old adage, ya get what ya pay for Fred. 😆
Spring on the outside of the plier head, seems more like a toy. Spring inside the plier head is a lot better.
Hahahahaha! You're going to show "your" package 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Cool
Es una herramienta muy buena por $30
I have the original Gerber Suspension & I'm happy with that as a beat around tool.
The NXT seems like a downgrade to me.
Hi Fred!
Hello. Thank you for stopping by :)
Don't like the folding and floppy (Buck folders) style, Too flimsy. the Sliding kind is my favorite.
My old sliding kind were made in the USA.
The Victorinox Classic scissors are much better.
