It's wild how far car tech has come. I now leave my phone and my keys in my pocket to drive. The phone connects automatically and starts playing the last music I was listening to when I got out. All of the car functions work with the fob in my pocket. Took a while to get used to not digging out my phone and keys every time I get in the car.

You didn't mention that you can use Automations with Carplay. That's VERY handy. I have an automation when I start Carplay to check the temperature. If the temperature is below 2 degrees celsius, I have SIRI say to me that I have to drive careful because it could be slippery. And you can do MANY more things with this...

Great tips, but here’s one I use all the time.
I ALWAYS listen to music while driving. I’m also almost always using Google Maps
or Apple Maps. My CarPlay screen is perhaps a bit smaller on my car, but if you tap the two squares in the lower left corner, you can see both your driving application as well as your music application, side-by-side, so I can skip songs while still getting all my driving information on one screen.

Add your home and work addresses to “My card” in Contacts.
Make sure these open with correct locations in Maps when tapped.
If you launch Maps on CarPlay, it’ll automatically plot the appropriate route, depending on your routines.
When you add an event in Calendar, make a habit of entering the location as well.
Maps will then plot the route there instead if it’s upcoming.
E.g. dental appointment before work, get in in the morning, and Maps plots the route to your dentist instead of to work.
Once done at the dentist, it’ll plot the route from there to your office.

Apple Maps ETA feature in Carplay is fantastic - a feature few know about. For other Apple users, it sends them a temporary Find My Friends link, which is updated in real-time. And for non-apple users, it sends them a formal text with your ETA etc. If you are ahead or behind schedule, it updates them automatically! It even tells the other person when you arrive, so you don't have to remember.

Try restarting your system or rebooting it usually by holding down the power button for three to five seconds and that should fix your problem temporarily but if you want to permanently fix it upgrade that OEM factory system that I am 100% certain you have because that's your problem the dealership dressed up a quadriplegic and passed it off to you as an Olympic athlete but it can't hang so you need to get a aftermarket system that has carplay wireless because that will also fix your problem has decent quality CPU capable of handling the high demand multiprocessing required inorder to perform as expected providing a smoother and more reliable experience from your systems capabilities, apps, and features without needing to tweak it. But it is nice to know that the user has complete unrestricted control and with a little research, a few videos, and a little NAPA know how the you can begin tapping into your aftermarkets raw potential. But if you are happy with that dealership sold you on a system that looks like a goddamn five-star restaurant and told you all about the fancy exquisite exotic foods on their goddamn menu and left out the part where they fired their head chef promoted the goddamn dish boys little johnny and josé to chefs to maximize profits, but your dining experience is chalked up to the disappointing taste of the 3 shit course meal the waiter sold you has the blame fall on little johnny bravo and no habla inglés José who tried their darnest and failed on a scale of epic proportion. I use CarPlay daily for gps, music and phone calls while driving. The only issue I’ve come across is Microsoft Teams causes my whole stereo system to reboot. If I try to join a meeting or take a teams call, the whole screen goes black, powers down and then comes back up. When I tried it with my Android, it worked fine. I hope Apple and Microsoft fix that problem. I often take meetings on my commute to the office and have to use my iPad mini and AirPods since the iPhone can’t connect when it’s connected to my car.

    - how do you change the appearance / backdrop you mentioned in video

Restarting the car will only work if there is enough time for the audio system to power off fully which is usually not immediately for most cars.

I do prefer Apple Maps over other services as I tend to experience their ETA estimates are way more accurate compared to Waze for instance. However the fact that it only shows speed traps and cameras but no trajectory speed controls is a no-go since Belgium, especially the northern part of the country, has a lot of them. I know that you should be driving the speed limit anyways but it helps just to make sure you're aware of it. Thanks for the tips, I didn't know/dive into the focus modes yet.

I use CarPlay on a motorbike, no comms. I think CarPlay is great but I would like the option of rerouting when I deviate from the route. The way I'm routed to the missed waypoint reguardless is too limiting and I would prefer to be guided to rejoin the route via the quickest route rather than the missed waypoint. I have had CarPlay on two EV's...first a Chevy Bolt and now on a Ford Mach E. It has worked very well for me in both cases. My "gripe" is that it only allows limited scrolling (in both cars) for albums downloaded to the iPhone. I understand not scrolling while driving using my hand, but it seems like there should be enough flexibility with Siri to access any album on the phone. That might be the case with the relatively simple titles of Pop albums...but with the complexities of classical metadata, it is very difficult for the classical listener. I have made a great number of classical playlists with simplified titles, but the results of calling for these by name have been mixed at best. Sooo...what that means is less spontaneity of selection (if you're a classical listener) and that you really need to decide what you want to listen to before you put the car in gear. Also, I prefer to use PlexAmp (for albums not on the phone) but that app, though on CarPlay, does not respond to voice commands. So given that the iPod started out as a music player and morphed into the iPhone when telephone was added it is surprising to me that the least attractive feature is control of music by Siri...again, this is much less of a problem with Pop music than Classical music. Maps works as well, for me, as Waze or Google maps and responds much better to Siri commands. Voice-texting gets used a lot and provided one's elocution is not defective works almost 100% of the time. So my ratings for these options are iMessage (10), Maps (8), Music (5) all when controlled by Siri voice command. The problems are not Siri problems, per se, but incomplete programming of Siri talking to these most-used (for me) app options.

I would prefer to use Apple maps, but always find Waze is just more reliable and useful. Speed warnings and stranded cars, also a lot faster at picking up delays (also across europe). Ref the Dartford Toll, you can set an account so it recognises Reg no and takes card payment automatically. Reminders is useful when set in advance to remind you at a certain point on a map to do something (ie get a reminder to post the birthday card that has been sat on the passenger seat for a week, when you are near a certain post box 😬)

CarPlay using an Ottocast wireless dongle is a good experience too, my partner uses Android and as we share driving quite often it was a good option instead of swapping out cables every time we hopped in the car. I am enjoying the CarPlay experience on our 7in corolla screen, it is functional and Siri has been reliable whilst driving. I use Waze as default navigation due to its crowdsourced reporting, if Apple maps was half as good in that dept I'd swap. My fave function is my remote garage door button that appears when i'm close to home (around 500mt radius), the same doesn't work in Android sadly. The next generation CarPlay sounds exciting but I honestly don't think its that needed, end of the day there is only so much information/interaction that needs to be distracting the driver. In Victoria Australia our laws have evolved recently that makes it illegal to "scroll" any device (including inbuilt screens) and overhead cameras will capture use and send fines. How they are going to determine a press from a scroll in a picture is beyond me, going to be a lot of drama.

I had been looking forward to CarPlay with my new Hyundai Kona. But the car came with Navigation and Sirius/XM and I thoroughly enjoy those enhancements. I connect my iPhone via Bluetooth and have access to phone, messages and Siri. Short press on steering wheel phone logo accesses automobile requests and a 2-3 second push accesses Siri. So, it seems I have most of the Good things plus expanded access to my phone. A downside to CarPlay was that I could not access it via wireless, only plug-in. If the new forms of CarPlay makes plugging in the phone worth it, then I might use it. Until then, I’m not sure CarPlay could be better than the Nav capability I already have plus expanded iPhone access.
