  • CarPlay has been around since 2014, so there’s a good chance that you’ve either driven a car with it, or been in a car where someone else has been using it. But be honest, beyond using it as a GPS, do you actually know how to use Apple CarPlay? This stock iPhone function is actually really impressive, but you need to know how to get the most out of it, to get the most out of it.

Here in India, Apple Maps isn't able to pick up the exact location from Home or Work address added in the contact card. It's always off by 1-2 kms or so. Also, on asking Siri to "Drive to home" while using CarPlay I get "Can't open while driving"... something like that. Defeats the whole purpose. Any tips/workarounds for both of these? It's been very frustrating using CarPlay here.

Your tutorials are alway educational, extremely easy to listen to and follow along with. There are others sharing their insights on TH-cam and although filled with information, they are sometimes difficult to listen to for more than a few moments because of tone of voice or competitive antics. You are always on mark. Thanks once more.

You didn't mention that you can use Automations with Carplay. That's VERY handy. I have an automation when I start Carplay to check the temperature. If the temperature is below 2 degrees celsius, I have SIRI say to me that I have to drive careful because it could be slippery. And you can do MANY more things with this...

You mentioned being able to change the order of your apps through settings on your phone bI was going crazy trying to figure out how to actually move them on that list n settings. I finally googled it. You have to touch and hold on the lines on the right of the app and move it to where you want it. Just in case anyone else is being as dense as I was being. 😂

It's wild how far car tech has come. I now leave my phone and my keys in my pocket to drive. The phone connects automatically and starts playing the last music I was listening to when I got out. All of the car functions work with the fob in my pocket. Took a while to get used to not digging out my phone and keys every time I get in the car.

Great tips, but here’s one I use all the time.
I ALWAYS listen to music while driving. I’m also almost always using Google Maps
or Apple Maps. My CarPlay screen is perhaps a bit smaller on my car, but if you tap the two squares in the lower left corner, you can see both your driving application as well as your music application, side-by-side, so I can skip songs while still getting all my driving information on one screen.

So handy to ask Siri to message and search for music etc. I’m not so impressed at the idea of a newer version though as I like it how it is and it works for me. I’m not particularly tech minded so hope they don’t mess with it too much

Add your home and work addresses to “My card” in Contacts.
Make sure these open with correct locations in Maps when tapped.
If you launch Maps on CarPlay, it’ll automatically plot the appropriate route, depending on your routines.
When you add an event in Calendar, make a habit of entering the location as well.
Maps will then plot the route there instead if it’s upcoming.
E.g. dental appointment before work, get in in the morning, and Maps plots the route to your dentist instead of to work.
Once done at the dentist, it’ll plot the route from there to your office.

Apple Maps ETA feature in Carplay is fantastic - a feature few know about. For other Apple users, it sends them a temporary Find My Friends link, which is updated in real-time. And for non-apple users, it sends them a formal text with your ETA etc. If you are ahead or behind schedule, it updates them automatically! It even tells the other person when you arrive, so you don't have to remember.

One thing you could’ve mentioned is that if you use Apple maps, you will get a head up display in your dashboard, at least you do with a VW, if you use other mapping apps you do not appear to get this guidance. One thing concern that we've looked into is data usage because she doesn't have a great mobile data allowance. You can save maps on Google to a degree to save data but you can't have real time traffic announcements without a date connection.
Driving regularly with data enabled can eat through a 1gb allowance in days.

CarPlay using an Ottocast wireless dongle is a good experience too, my partner uses Android and as we share driving quite often it was a good option instead of swapping out cables every time we hopped in the car. I am enjoying the CarPlay experience on our 7in corolla screen, it is functional and Siri has been reliable whilst driving. I use Waze as default navigation due to its crowdsourced reporting, if Apple maps was half as good in that dept I'd swap. My fave function is my remote garage door button that appears when i'm close to home (around 500mt radius), the same doesn't work in Android sadly. The next generation CarPlay sounds exciting but I honestly don't think its that needed, end of the day there is only so much information/interaction that needs to be distracting the driver. In Victoria Australia our laws have evolved recently that makes it illegal to "scroll" any device (including inbuilt screens) and overhead cameras will capture use and send fines. How they are going to determine a press from a scroll in a picture is beyond me, going to be a lot of drama.

Thanks for your excellent tutorial. In OZ until recently have predominantly using Waze BUT have switched to Apple Maps. I really like the instructions and display of traffic lights that others (Google and Waze) do not show. As for UK we are RHS drivers.
I was hoping you might have covered the following "issue"
Is there a way to get an iPhone 14 to display the SAME screen as on the Carplay Map screen?
My Carplay Screen (in a Subaru) has the SPEED on the LHS - a long way even for peripheral vision.
I lock my iPhone onto the Air Vent between steering wheel and RH door so if if it was the SAME display screen as the Carplay vehicle screen it would be basically in my eyesight.
Alternatively can the Car Nav Carplay screen be "flipped over"so the Speed limit would then be on the RHS of the screen?
The SPEEDS are are a big issue in Subarus as the default NAV is TomTom and the limits are hopelessly out of date on major streets/roads I used. Up to 4+ years out of date. Recently cost me $400 fine and demerit points - first in 40 years.
    Thanks

Wireless can have an issue connecting to carplay if you park in your garage and you have Bluetooth/wi~fi in your house. Can be frustrating to try to get it to connect, especially if you're late for work!

I actually like the Apple watch tapping when a turn in coming up, because I may be distracted by a conversation or I’m unsure if it’s the following turn. CarPlay is an excellent system much better than the alternative.

I use CarPlay daily for gps, music and phone calls while driving. The only issue I’ve come across is Microsoft Teams causes my whole stereo system to reboot. If I try to join a meeting or take a teams call, the whole screen goes black, powers down and then comes back up. When I tried it with my Android, it worked fine. I hope Apple and Microsoft fix that problem. I often take meetings on my commute to the office and have to use my iPad mini and AirPods since the iPhone can’t connect when it’s connected to my car.

Thank you for the reminders of other things CarPlay can do. I use CarPlay all the time. One thing I do is run Waze in the background for alerts but navigate with Apple Maps. I appreciate my watch pinging like a turn signal when I need to turn. I use Siri all the time for calls, messages and reminders. I have great ideas driving down the road.

So you think Apple Maps is better at navigating or do you just like the view better? I'd try it but am afraid my phone would burst into flames from the heat. (Of course, I'm also using it to listen to podcasts.)

    • @Barbie.7884
      @Barbie.7884 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@donlibes I haven’t had any heat issues using Maps. I like the lane information and landmark comments like “go thru this light and turn right at the next light”. In my area this is so helpful. I stream music, listen to podcasts, and audiobooks book with no heat problems. I do keep my phone out of direct sunlight. I’ve had issues with overheating when I have my phone on my dashboard but that was in a car that didn’t have CarPlay.

15:09 I have a wireless charging device on an air-vent, exactly for that reason.
I had the iPhone 12 Pro Max for about 2.5 years. And it's battery capacity was only 87%. And I use it extensively in my car.

I would prefer to use Apple maps, but always find Waze is just more reliable and useful. Speed warnings and stranded cars, also a lot faster at picking up delays (also across europe). Ref the Dartford Toll, you can set an account so it recognises Reg no and takes card payment automatically. Reminders is useful when set in advance to remind you at a certain point on a map to do something (ie get a reminder to post the birthday card that has been sat on the passenger seat for a week, when you are near a certain post box 😬)

Another very useful tutorial; thanks and well done. I've been very impressed by the CarPlay facility in my VW Golf (mk7.5) and feel the Apple Maps application works best as it appears to make use of the car's integral GPS receiver rather than the one in the phone. I've found with Waze and Google Maps, the map can occasionally lose its bearings, especially when travelling at very low speeds. The Apple Music implementation is also very impressive. Keep up the good work!

    • @anaymakan6989
      @anaymakan6989 ปีที่แล้ว +3

exactly, apple maps plugs into the cars receiver so compass direction and accuracy is superior. Only time I would run waze is if i am trying to avoid traffic and waze is showing a better route or for watching out for speed cameras.

That’s quite interesting to know that it uses the car’s GPS antenna, if it’s true for all models. It has gotten completely lost a few times (location not what it appears on screen) which necessitates the phone to be rebooted so that made me think it was using phone gos connection? This is using wireless CarPlay.

Nice comment on the wireless charger call out. My car has wireless CarPlay and a wireless charger and it’s a recipe for cooked iPhone. For long journeys I end up plugging my phone in anyway to keep the battery topped up.

One thing you did not mention and I just found out as it was something that frustrated me is the little Squiggle in the top left corner of map. As you know this changes the view from a I guess street buy street view and gives you you total trip view with your progress in the route. I like this when i am doing longer trips so I can see what’s around me in case I want to make a diversion. Otherwise great tutorial and will be back for updates.

@15:10 I think it’s the same even when you’re charging or simply connected via USB: phone heats up, especially on very warm weather (and you’re not using the A/C), and the phone either freezes (phone doesn’t respond to your tap/touch) or completely shuts down. Happened to me more than once.

Wireless charging creates a lot more heat in the phone than cabled charging. Both do add heat, but the difference is significant.

How to keep the screen from going back to the default map size. If I zoom in the map so can read street names the screen eventually reverts back to zoomed out screen. Love your work.
