Curious to know, how do you go about it? I’ve been looking for the place in Google maps, then deselect the location, then create a pin right beside it, then copy the coordinates and paste them in Apple Maps. So much hassle… :(
Me too. But it's actually pretty annoying to use 2 apps. While navigating apple maps just looks so much cleaner with no distraction at all on the display, while google maps is so much better for doing any kind of research.
One of my favorite features of Apple Maps is if I put in an appointment (such as for a doctor) in Calendar, and put the address in that app, I can pull up directions right from Calendar and it automatically opens up Maps.
@@dimiberberu And herein lies the problem, as it's superior at storing your visit to a Head Shop and Planned Parenthood in your advertisement identity profile, which data collectors will then get and resell. Data aggregators pick it up and resell around to each other. Hackers hack it (like National Public Data back in August), it gets sold on the Dark Web--which incidentally is interesting as foreign intelligence agencies pick up that data, also CIA/NSA. Now explain to me again how the Google Calendar integration into Google Maps, is superior to the exact same thing on Apple Calendar and Maps?
@@dimiberberu Yeah it's superior at telling you "Turn right now" when there are three lanes of traffic you have to get over to make the turn. I'll definitely opt out of that kind of superiority and have a relaxed, calmed, informed driving experience. Thank you very much.
Used Google Maps for years. Many a wrong turn and mis-directions. Tried Apple Maps a year ago and never went back. Better graphics, more human like directions that actually make sense when driving at speed. More importantly, it never sent me in the wrong direction.
One of my favorite things with Apple Maps is if you have an Apple Watch it integrates with your watch. You'll get haptic feedback when you're getting close to needing to do something (turn mostly). It's far more useful than you'd think. Actually experiencing that one needs to happen, and you'll "get it".
Yes indeed but I wouldn't be surprised if Samsungites will tell us they have the same thing. What's really great is if I'm driving to a trailhead or parking garage and have a walking route after, I go straight from planning it on Mac or iPad, into the iPhone as a little "briefcase" of it, get in the car and there's CarPlay, drive there with little "morse code" vibes on my wrist giving me haptic feedback for where to go right along with voice from CarPlay (or iPhone if I'm in someone else's car), to the trailhead or garage, where I get out and have it on my wrist. If I'm in someone else's car who doesn't have CarPlay, I find it's much easier to do a half second glance at the wrist, than take my eyes off the road and look at the phone.
@Äpple-pie-5k Yep you can indeed do that accross Samsung devices too. TBH there are loads of features like this that I assume are unique, only to find it's either been copied or copied from 😂
@@Äpple-pie-5k No, they don' t have the same thing and probably never will. It requires different companies coordinating with each other in complex ways. Google has to inegrate with Windows and all versions of Android for this to happen and that is simply too much backtracking. The only alternative would be to create a whole new Map program that does this, but again the cross-referencing between three vast companies is easier said than done. That also includes a new OS for each and every other Watch to handle this challenge. Apple never had such dilemmas as its ALL based on the same OS. Programming on Apple's OS is a simple process compared to the rest of the gang! :)
@@nixl3518 Sorr you are right about it. Samsung Windows Google will never get their sh1t together as much as Apple,Apple,Apple, so you're right. But I want them to so that apple will be less lazy. Still of course in 2024 apple wins, every gold medal from bi- tri- and pentaholon
I’ve transitioned to using Apple Maps. And it’s because I like the voice prompts on Maps more. Turn right at the next light is how a real person would give you directions. I also like how the Apple Watch taps your wrist to let you know you’re approaching a turn.
Not the way I like to give (or hear) directions. I say "At the next light, turn right" which stops drivers from prematurely turning right as soon as they hear the first half of the sentence.
@ Apple Maps does that too-accidents, speed traps, red light cameras, and traffic. I find them pretty much the same but the graphic presentation in Apple Maps is preferable.
I use Apple Maps because it's integrated well with my phone. I also really like that it shows traffic lights in navigation so you can see your next turn way ahead. Google Maps is good for finding places in a given area. Then I use Apple Maps to get there.
Apple Maps also warns about traffic cameras and speed traps. So I started using it a while ago because of that. Not sure if Google Maps picked it up but ... true story, it literally saved me $300 on a yellow light with a hidden camera, that was conveniently timed to be shorter duration than usual so that it can catch you in a red intersection. $300 saved on Apple Maps. Apple for the W.
@@w2385-i2s you missed the point, it's about Apple Maps makes you not look at the screen while driving, it's more important than 1 or 2 or 3 points, it's literallyt a decider
Like you said: Google maps for info and reviews. Apple for navigation primarily because my watch taps me on the wrist to get my attention for the next turn. I never turn the voice on.
I dont know if apple maps does this, but if your speedometer dont work in your car, google maps show the street speed limit & also shows the speed your going at the sametime.
It might depend on what country you're in. I know that Apple Maps doesn't display the speed in Australia. I'm pretty sure that Google maps doesn't either. Admittedly this was a few years ago but the last time I asked Siri to tell me how fast I was going, she told me to look at the car speedo! I thought that was funny.
to turn it on.. open Settings-Apps(at bottom)-Maps. Under Directions section tap 'Driving' under Show in Navigation, switch both Compass and Speed Limit. I myself have Avoid Tolls and Compass and Speed Limit Selected. But have Highways not selected.
As a directionally-challenged senior citizen, this was SO helpful. I've been frustrated using Google maps for a few years and have very recently tried Apple Maps. I'm a convert! This was helpful in confirming that and showing me new ways to use it. Thanks again.
Google is all about attaining information about you…. They already know enough about me through other apps… I guess I take it as a small victory by not letting them know where I’m going every day…
I just use Apple Maps. Flawless and crazy easy. It makes driving effortless and fun. My friend insists on using Google, when we travel, it’s slow and he struggles with it constantly. I’m not sure if it’s user issues, but I just ignore his input.
Been an Apple user for years but I use Google Maps for Navigation as it shows more details.. It has been around a lot longer and Apple Maps when it started was really basic. As a courier I can tell you both apps still get you to dead end roads or want you to turn down the wrong way on a street you can't turn on. Neither is 100%. Google has the better reviews and info. Real world user.. :)
One day at the last company I drove for I was at the main terminal taking a break and as I was sitting in the driver seat a young driver stopped as he was walking by and asked me what navigation app did I use. I reached down and picked up my Truckers Atlas and showed it to him. The look on his face and reaction was priceless. I was medically retired the next February and had 27 years of driving a big truck and a good many of the customers I went to I was familiar with.
Apple Maps only shows the current speed limit when a destination is set…Waze shows it all the time…As an RVer that is frequently in new areas I lean pretty heavily on Waze.
Both have a avoid highway tab. I would recommend having a preferred highway or a limited turn setting. For example my friend travelled between Omaha NE and Wichita KS for a family event. Both want to send them thru rural Nebraska and Kansas when taking I-80 to York and the US-81 and I-135 is 9 minutes longer and such less stressful drive especially at night being 4 lane divided highway the entire route. I think such a setting would be helpful for people driving to an unfamiliar location.
Another advantage of Apple Maps/Apple Watch is if you are in a city where you need walking directions. Super helpful as you walk the watch prompts you when to turn and how far to go.
One important point you missed. Privacy! If you don’t want some random store that you commute everyday near them, use Apple Maps, otherwise you’ll start receiving ads on your Google search or Gmail about those random stores. Careful with whom you share your location with!
Well that’s definitely good to know! Back when I was using Google Maps on Android that definitely wasn’t the case and now that I’m on iPhone it definitely isn’t the case. Just another reason why “it depends” is the correct answer for which app is better.
I don't think you're supplying any specific info or comparisons to back up your claims. Recent trip to Germany and Google Maps was absolute CRAP compared to Apple Maps. UK and Denmark seemed about even. I'm sure in your country you might be correct, but without specifics you're almost guilty of being a liar since you tell people this as if it's true everywhere outside of USA. Please give real specific useful meaningful information so we can learn where you are and what specific actual real feature is "years ahead". Thanks and have a good day.
@@nixl3518 You're overgeneralizing. It's better in some European countries and worse in others. Nothing to freak out about, just switch between them depending on the country.
BTW Apple is also soon releasing Apple Maps on the Web so soon you can use it from anywhere too like Google Maps. Google Maps also has a permanent location sharing feature similar to find my. I prefer Apple Maps because of the better voice directions and also because I’m often using public transport and here in Germany it’s way better on Apple Maps. I really like that all the symbols on the map and in the route description match with what the Bus/Train company uses so it’s less confusing when trying to find out which Bus I have to take next.
@@andrewk4172 the vibration “notification”, accompanied by “ding, ding” sound, every time a turn is approaching! It might be possible to turn it off, I haven’t investigated, I just use Google maps.
@@andrewk4172 I think he means the little tap-tap vibes on the wrist that let you know it's time to make a turn. His reason for hating it but to each their own. I find it's absolutely amazing awesome because I can listen to my music without voice interruptions, and get a discrete polite little vibration on my wrist when the turn is coming up.
As someone who owns the iPhone 14 PM, I absolutely hate Apple Maps. I use Google Maps. The main reason I hate Apple Maps, I absolutely hate the layout of Apple Maps on Apple CarPlay.
I’ve tried Waze several times but was never pleased. It always took me on the longest route. Many of the popular features of Waze have been incorporated into Google Maps.
The biggest difference is that the company that owns one of them has a business model of hacking every device it's on and sending it all back to the mother ship. The other one is Apple.
Twice experienced that apple maps could not find the address. Searched with Google maps it was correct. Searches were made with the same street, number and city. Should there be a different way to search with Apple maps?? J am using Iphone.
When I drive buses and coaches, I use tomtom to get me to the postcode, and google maps to take me to a specific location on satellite view. When I drive cars/ vans, I use Apple maps if I'm not in a rush, google maps if I need to get somewhere a bit more quicker, or Waze if i'm on a mission to get somewhere ontime but already running late.
The visual and voice directions is by and far the most important feature of a map app. Everything else is minor stuff. So, for me, Apple Maps is far above the better app.
You are correct. It's surprising how many people can't think it through clearly. Driving is inherently risky and even dangerous sometimes. Having a clear map you can visually understand twice as fast, can be a difference of life and death. Because eyes on the road. Having more humanlike directions given in a more timely manner might be too. Because sporadic spastic last second maneuvers is bad juju. And feeling calm from a nice voice that tells you ahead of time in the clearest way possible, keeps your head in a better space for driving. As a final bonus, all of this leads to a calmer more enjoyable experience, which is a true quality of life consideration as well.
For a single driver, voice directions allows him/her to drive without having to look at the map, making Apple's version clearly safer, as it predicts and describes events such as traffic signals, stop signs and lane preference well in advance of having to take action. Then there is the EXTRA factor that has not been named anywhere I have seen so far: the Apple Watch. It provides haptic information to your wrist telling you of action that one should take imminently such as an upcoming turn even as it also shows more concentrated map actions, most useful if you happen to not have your screen easily visible as you drive. There simply is NO equivalent and it appeared longe before the vastly improved directions. Google has it's work cut out to catch up though it has no way of dealing with the Watch interface.
8:25 one thing I really like about Apple Maps is that I can search for something like restaurants and it’ll show places on the map, but where it’s different from Google is that if I’m currently looking at like Chicago (I don’t live in Chicago) and I search for restaurants or even something extremely specific, it doesn’t redirect and show stuff near me, it just instantly shows it at where I’m looking
Is there a way to automatically share eta with someone in google maps for a specific destination? Meaning my wife and I set up Apple Maps to auto share ETA every time we hit “home” it’s super useful for us. I always want to use Google Maps for sat view but can’t find hot to set that up…so if anyone knows thanks in advance
I took my wife to Chicago last year and used Google snaps as I always have. When I was in the city, I had trouble because Google Maps would tell me to turn left on some street in 1000 feet. The problem was that 1000 feet would take me through three intersections and the street signs were not in uniform places at each intersection and it was difficult to search for them while also watching out for pedestrians and drivers who knew where they were going. My wife seemed to be clueless that I might have needed help and didn’t pick up the phone to give me tips, but pointed out that I missed the turn after I missed the turn. I found later that Apple Maps would say go through two intersections and then turn left on some street. While I believe that Google maps may be more up to date, Apple Maps makes it easier in down town situations.
Yeah and in-car directions are so superior. I used to be stressing about missing turns and being told to turn after it was too late to do it. After Apple Maps, I actually enjoy my drive. Not just better instructions that are easier to follow, but a nicer voice, a nicer looking map with less UI distractions, my brain can figure out the map in half the time so I can put my eyes back on the road, etc.
The app ui and design is really nice and clear. It makes a bigger difference than it seems. I feel like google might be more accurate (not sure) but i am transitioning to apple maps for the interface alone. The voice is really nice too while google maps tells me useless information like road numbers after the road name for every turn. I don’t mean road numbers like m25 or m1 or a11. These are well known and major motorways and roads. I mean “a401” seemingly made up numbers for every road. It even tells me the one for my road and i have no idea even after living here for 10 years.
@@ZeerakImran I don't know, I live in a nice place with trees, and apple maps literally shows me where I am from trees. this speaks to my brain, I see the trees and see the trees, my brain understands
One thing to keep in mind is that while Google Maps's core functionality is essentially the same on both iPhone and Android, the Android version generally offers more advanced features and deeper integration with other Google services on Android phones. Google Maps on Android often gets new features long before the iPhone version. For example, the whole pinning of your location is on the Android version of Google Maps. Also, generally, Google Maps still does better, more reliable directions than Apple Maps globally. Also, Waze is owned by Google. You can use Waze and Google Maps interchangeably. Not to mention, some Waze features are migrating to Google Maps. Google Maps also has greater AI integration than Apple Maps. Most people will prefer Google Maps since it is technically still superior to Apple Maps. However, personal preference and what works will always depend on the end user. Apple Maps is still a good maps app. If it works for you, then I would stick with it. However, Apple Maps isn't going to threaten Google Maps' dominance any time soon. Also, as a side note, Google Maps has fully flushed out desktop version.
You're right about the platform differences. To add even more, you can't do Apple Maps on an Android except as a web page. So the app comparison is only relevant for iPhone users who can pick which maps app to use for different contexts. If you're on Android you're stuck with Waze or GMaps, and on iPhone you can pick from all 3. "Most people will prefer Google Maps since it is technically still superior to Apple Maps." For those who have a choice--that is, iPhone users--this is debatable and the main point of the video. My second main use for Maps is integration with messages, calendar, notes, browser, and so on. For people with a CHOICE between AMaps and GMaps, AMaps is superior because of Apple ecosystem. My MAIN USE for maps is getting in-car directions to navigate. And for this, Apple Maps is Mike Tyson and GMaps is a scrawny contender twitching and bleeding with a black eye on the floor and moaning "mommy mommy!" . After switching from GMaps to AMaps, the number of missed turns and wild dangerous traffic maneuvers to hit a turn just in time, has gone from "common" to "almost never". This isn't just about subjective preference. It's about the risk all of us undertake that SOMEONE ELSE using Google Maps might do a wild move and kill or injure us. Also, as a side note, Apple Maps has a fully flushed out desktop version, web version, and tablet version, so that whatever you figure out on one device is instantly ready for you when you go to your car.
Glad someone said it 😅 Using Google Maps on Android vs iOS, you enjoy better integration on an overall more complete mapping application. A lot of the integration features Apple users mention as a plus for Apple Maps, Android users already enjoy with Google Maps. Apple Maps is doing well considering that it excludes over 70% of global phone users, but its that exclusion that will likely see it never seriously rival Google Maps.
@@nmeister67@nmeister67 Yeah, it's not mathematically possible for Apple Maps to ever catch up with the limited Apple ecosystem. It would have to expand beyond Apple's ecosystem onto competing platforms. This is also why the Apple Maps community needs to be bigger to give Apple Maps the details Google Maps provides on a global level. Apple Maps is good in the United States. However, outside of Apple's home turf, it's not as flushed out and doesn't perform at the same level as in the United States. Apple Maps is the most reliable in the United States. It's also decent in some EU countries. But it's not as flushed out as Google Maps on the global stage.
One big thing for me is google maps being able to route me around high traffic areas. They're excellent at that. But I agree with you on the use what works for you approach.
@nmeister67 , indeed, Google Maps will always remain the top map application since its Community is vastly more prominent, and it's available on many more devices and across the world. Apple Maps works well in the United States, but when you enter other countries, it gets a lot more iffy and sometimes doesn't work well. Apple Maps is tailored towards the United States since that's Apple's home turf. Not to mention, the United States is one of the largest car markets on the planet. So, it only makes sense to dial in the United States for the maps. However, fewer resources are working on the improvements for Apple Maps globally.
Im a PURE Android user, and ill fight anyone for it lol but apple is the clear winner here by having access to both of these apps, while im here using just google maps. But then again, i have never heard any android user complain about not having the Apple Maps, ever. So what does this mean? Well... i think that Apple wants to keep it this way so their devices can actually use the stuff we can also use while gatekeeping us out of theirs which SUCKS in my opinion, but hey! Thats Apple for you lol 😅
I can’t stand google maps because when you’re 0.2 miles away which is actually a block, on google maps 0.2 miles away looks like half a mile or maybe more. On Apple Maps 0.2 miles looks like an actual block away! Hands down in my opinion Apple Maps is where it is 🍎🏆
I am waiting for either of these apps to get some intelligence around multi-destination routing and business hour constraints. "I need to run errands to these 5 locations, give me the most efficient way to get to all of them making sure I don't get to any of them after they close." But it seems like none of them are even thinking of that kind of usecase yet...
I think they are, actually. AI for anything except chatting is still very new and frankly, not even newborn yet. When it does roll out I'm sure it's going to make some terrible mistakes at first, so probably 2-3 years after it will be buttoned down. So I imagine we'll all have the kind of thing you're talking about in 3-6 years.
5:15 I agree this makes a huge difference!! Sometimes you can’t look at the screen and you based off of voice navigation and Apple does so much better . When you’re driving down the interstate at 75mph no one has the time to check if you’re 50ft away from the exit . Apple on the other hand gives more context as far as your current environment and it makes a huge difference. I’ve used Google maps for 10+ years and I was so used to it . Used to missing streets and exits and this was my first year using Apple Maps and it has not happened once
Yep. And in his scoring system he gave them each 3 points, as if every point is equal. Sorry, but missing my exit and adding 30 minutes to my drive isn't worth the same amount of points as who has more yelp reviews. It's worth EVERYTHING.
@@Äpple-pie-5k that’s your opinion. That’s why you have the choice to pick which ever. This is a navigation app. The main purpose of it is to help you get from point A to point B . No need to be cranky over the points each got because your right not each point has the same value, in this case the reviews are a point worth less than the actual navigation point. The tipping scale for me is google works better is rural travel for navigation AND Google uses Plus Codes. Plus codes are a game changer for finding a location that doesn’t have an address and requires Latitude and Longitude. You don’t need a back country mountaineering merit badge to use it. The location is so accurate that it can get you with 9 meters of your intended location. This works for people you don’t know or locations such as a ball field within a city park. When I need the Lyft driver to pick up at the rear of the the hotel I use a plus code and text them.
@@noelv1976 Apple maps automatically remembers mine, Notes it when I park and start walking. I also have Apple Tags in my vehicles, so I can also always find my way to them with the "Find my" which because of the apple Eco system pulls up the directions in apple maps...
Apple Maps does not allow you to search anything along your route. It only allows you to pick from a few things. This is a dealbreaker for me. That’s why I use Google maps.
When testing both while driving I found Apple Maps to be 5-10 seconds slower. Maybe slow carrier issues are what cause drivers to veer last minute from fast lane across all lanes to the exit on the highway.
Hmmm, I have exact opposite experience. But to be fair, my iPhone stashes "offline maps" for my entire local area so is beholden ZERO to network issues. I'm going to see if I can get GMaps to stash offline maps and give it another try to see if that's the reason why it was always giving me late instructions I had no time to react to.
Good stuff here. Jon, did you ever measure ability to adjust during a trip based on traffic or accidents? For example, I once encountered a bad accident which closed a major freeway. This happened after I had started my trip. Waze noticed and recommended a new route in flight, Apple Maps did not. This was several years ago
Maybe its fixed now, but what drove me away from Apple Maps a couple of years ago was that Apple would try to reroute you through neighborhoods, or whatever small streets if it thought it could save you a few minutes. Let me tell you, when your driving a huge truck, definitely no bueno.
You can approve your route before you start the navigation. You can even craft and edit it beforehand. It will suggest re-routes but not force you into them, if you didn't nail down a specific route first.
@@Äpple-pie-5ki think he means it changes the route while driving. I have experienced it before. Not sure if it was google or apple but it annoyed me. what you describe is bassackwards, google changed on me and apple forced me to decide. I can't even say who is better there since it's opt-in to a better choice.
@@ZeerakImran That is exactly what happened to me. I was driving a huge box truck and my route (pre-planned) took me through a city on a highway (2-lane, not an interstate). On the way, I was suddenly rerouted and found myself going down narrow single-lane roads, through neighborhoods, and what have you, only to eventually reconnect with the highway I was on before it rerouted me. Like I say, it may be fixed now, but that one experience has kept me from Apple maps for a long time.
John, I’m a 78-year-old retired cartographer and Mac user. When I planned my 20 17, 2018 trips to France and England , in particular Paris, I was able to create hour by hour itineraries for car, rail, subway, and bus to get to where I needed to go. I haven’t checked to see if Apple Maps gives bus and subway lines and stations, but I think this could be a good project for your review. At least add it as a planning criteria for your comparisons.
Isn’t like google also have live location sharing for many years already and most messaging app able to share your location? I don’t really understand your 6th point.
I use Tom Tom live, it shows me where fuel stations are and how much their fuel is, which is a great feature. It also takes me away from heavy traffic areas and gets me there quicker. I can set both my Apple Maps and my Tom Tom and the Tom Tom, will always show a quicker route, sometimes up to 20 mins quicker. And while on route, if an incident has happened, say 10 miles ahead, it will reset automatically and steer me clear of it, taking me in another direction away from it! All clever
Apple maps will automatically re-route too and has done so for years. It once saved us almost an hour coming back from western MA when there was a massive accident on the Mass Pike; it diverted us onto Rte 2.
One very important point (to me at least…): on Apple Maps the map while navigating is pretty neat, with the building in perspective and so on, but if you are just roaming around without a defined destination the map graphics are completely different and not that good at all. The map gats practically flat (even in 3D) with very pale colors all over that make it very difficult to understand what’s in front. On Google Maps (as well as in Waze) even without a destination the 3D map is slanted enough and is giving a much better view of what’s coming. That is a pretty significant thing and it’a also difficult to understand why Apple doesn’t allow at least to use the same navigation map…
I’ve always used Waze, but it gives directions like Google and I miss things about 25% of the time. For me, the contextual directions of Apple is reason enough to switch. Thank you!! I’ll start today!
I’m sure some people might see the tie as a cop out. But I literally have both apps installed on my phone for the exact reasons you said. Google is just better overall when trying to find places to go or usability. But at the end of the day I always default to Apple Maps for all of the social integration and navigation. Great video!
The one feature I wish apple maps had that google maps has is Announce when entering a new state. ik it's not like super important but man really cool thing
Apple Maps has three useful features: 1. It will automatically mark where you park your car so that you can find it in a sea of ever changing cars in a large parking lot, 2. When walking and looking at directions to get somewhere in a city with narrow streets and tall buildings, it shows a blue cone that radiates from you and if you walk in the correct direction the cone will be in front of you pointing the way to walk, 3, If you use Apple Car Play and your car has a heads up display, it will show you your directions in that display. Not all cars have that feature but Mercedes and BMW do. All this being said, for instant traffic reporting, I use Waze.
@@Äpple-pie-5k After each drive using your car screen there is an option to save your parking location. You can also press the blue icon (your location) to save it. Personally the only time I need to save my parking spot is when I can't park next to where I'm going
When I was driving groceries in our little town, I used a free map app called MAPS. Easy to put needles on addresses and delete them as you went along. Nice and easy.
So I’m an American living in Italy, and I do use Google maps for most of my navigation, but one relatively unused feature that I absolutely love about Apple maps is if you place your finger on the icon for a long press, a contextual menu pops up and then you can do “mark my location“. I use this whenever I get out of my car in an unknown location and this gives me easy walking directions back to my car. Now, both apps do sense when you’re driving and usually save a “parked car“. But if you’re just trying to mark a place quickly to come back to, this feature in Apple maps doesn’t even require you to open the app to quickly save your location to get back to it.
Another note about integration: The Apple Watch chimes (or vibrates if on silent mode) before each turn when using Apple Maps. This can be pretty useful since you can have the volume down, the map up on a car or phone’s view screen, and not wake up a sleeping passenger when a turn approaches.
I love Apple Maps through CarPlay. It figures out my most common destinations, and when I travel to them (like my office and home commutes), the app automatically displays the routes and drive times when I start my car. The drive time estimates and alternate route suggestions are spot on. It's changed how I drive.
I converted to Apple Maps for the same reason. However, wintertime driving in Canada’s Prince Edward Island last January, Apple Maps directed me to 3 dead end roads (due to winter conditions) on my journey and it couldn’t locate a way out for me. Switching to Google maps showed me a true path back to main roads.
One other advantage of google maps has to do with language. On I phone if your main language is set to English, when you use Apple Maps in a foreign country it gives you directions in English with often awkward pronunciations of street names. Google somehow takes account of the locations and changes the language automatically.
@@sid35gb If set to English, and you know a smattering of any French dialect, it’s hard to reconcile the word you see in on the street sign in Montreal with what Google says. I love telling people here to meet me at the pie 9 metro station. If they get the joke, you know they’re from Montreal regardless of whether they speak French, English, Quebecois.
Google maps works much better in carplay when you don’t have a specific destination inputted. It will show you a detailed map of where you are and nearby cross streets, while Apple maps displays a broad map of the area that is almost worthless.
Really? What version of phone and CarPlay are you running? I get a much nicer map on Apple Maps that I can more easily adjust to my context and intentions.
I am using IOS 18.01 with an iphone 15 max. Again, unless you input a specific destination, Apple Maps gives you a worthless overview of the area, vs Google Maps shows you a detailed map of the area you are in, including street names and traffic info.
@@Darryl5 OK let's figure it out unless your a Samsung shill. I personally "unless you input a specific destination" never tried navigating with no destination. So we're in 3% whiner territory here OK. Answer us the special use where you are using navigation without knowing wtf you are going to, this is not mean, I really want to knows Apple helps, learns, and perfects thank you for answering
I don’t know why you would have such a hostile tone. Or what Samsung has to do with this topic. I have wireless Apple Car Play and the map opens automatically every time I start the car. Most of the time I don’t need to input a destination because I basically know where I am going. But I still like seeing a detailed map including upcoming intersections and traffic on my route. And Apple Maps totally sucks at this.
@@Darryl5 OK well, I don't know what to say. I don't need a destination for Car Play to show me where I am on Apple Maps. So I felt it's very hostile for you to say it sucks at this when in my opinion it looks nicer and is easier to locate where you are from it showing the trees and buildings more recognizably.
For us in eastern EU, we have Waze and for the purpose of travel it beats both of these, showing potholes, speed cameras, accidents, car pulled over on the the shoulder etc.
On the social integration point, all of those things are available for Google maps and Android. Sharing location in messages, sharing you location with a friend etc etc. My mom and kids show up on my Google maps always
That’s not true. I use Apple Maps in my EV often and it integrates nicely and tells me SOC when I’ll arrive and will also navigate to chargers if necessary.
I have few classic cars and love that Apple Maps shows up on my Apple Watch. Just makes navigating nice when I can just glance on my watch for the next turn and the watch vibrates before next turn as well.
I switched to Apple Maps mainly because when using the CarPlay feature if I interrupt my journey by, for example, stopping to get gas or food I can unplug my phone and when I get back to my car and plug the phone in again the maps return to my selected route without any extra prompts to do so. Google maps requires me to search and select my destination all over again. I also like its interface better, in general.
Google also has a constant contribution screen popping up just when you're in the middle of having to make a quick decision about where to make a turn at an intersection😖
Nowadays it’s Apple Maps all the way for navigation, primarily for the far superior way the voice guidance works, just as you said. It is far more intuitive in the way it guides you and you never get that ‘instruction just as you pass the turn’ situation. Google maps always for the research before you leave home, Apple when you do. For so many other reasons too, if you’re an Apple user, it interacts with many other applications. Great video. New subscriber👍
I use them the same way you do, Google for research and Apple for Nav. Also, Apple maps is great if you're using it in CarPlay because Siri can interpret less specific identifiers than Google. Tell Siri to navigate to your friend's house and if your friend is in your contacts, Apple Maps will take you there. You don't need to remember the address.
I live having both apps on my phone. Spoken navigation while driving with Apple Maps is the best. I also research on google maps, but use Siri to get directions there
What is most annoying about Google maps is if you are in a city during a busy time like rush hour, Google maps shows how busy all the adjacent streets (that are not on your route) are in red or yellow including your route which is red or yellow (since it is the busy time of day) that you thus cannot see your route because almost all the streets on the Google map is red or yellow.
Google apps told me wrong directions to get on a mountain back in the day. On top of the wrong mountain there was a sign saying Google was wrong and to go back down and turn a mile further to get on beech mountain
When I am traveling long distances on Highways I like to use both Apple and Google Apps. They are both excellent in their own ways and I'm glad I don't have to decide to only use one.
Your conclusion is exactly mine, I use Google to find places and Apple to get me there.

Google Maps can do the same and the entire Google ecosystem is well integrated
Google is superior on everything ;)
@@lmc333 @lmc333 - Yes, but you have to use google calendar for that to work seamlessly on the iPhone. That's a no-go for some (myself included).
@@dimiberberu And herein lies the problem, as it's superior at storing your visit to a Head Shop and Planned Parenthood in your advertisement identity profile, which data collectors will then get and resell. Data aggregators pick it up and resell around to each other.

@@donlibes You're being too literalist. What it really and literally says is, "Go past this light, then turn right at the next one."
I agree. Its speech pattern is far more natural.
I have used both, and apple map is quite annoying. Google maps is more accurate and easier to follow. Even tells u traffic and police speed trap ahead
@ Apple Maps does that too-accidents, speed traps, red light cameras, and traffic. I find them pretty much the same but the graphic presentation in Apple Maps is preferable.
I’m not as interested in research and exploration. Navigation is the most important to me
Then Waze is for you lol
Someone should compare Apple Maps to Waze.
I’d still use Apple Maps though.
Oh and Waze doesn’t even have transit lol
I use Apple Maps because it's integrated well with my phone. I also really like that it shows traffic lights in navigation so you can see your next turn way ahead. Google Maps is good for finding places in a given area. Then I use Apple Maps to get there.
Same here I’m from Czech republic. I use double check with google maps and then i find it on Apple Maps and let Apple directed me to that destination.
Google maps always shows traffic lights and speed traps as well
Apple Maps also warns about traffic cameras and speed traps. So I started using it a while ago because of that. Not sure if Google Maps picked it up but ... true story, it literally saved me $300 on a yellow light with a hidden camera, that was conveniently timed to be shorter duration than usual so that it can catch you in a red intersection.

Yeah it's so nice to not have redundant voice interruptions mess with my nice experiential bubble world of beautiful music. Or talking to a friend.
I dont know if apple maps does this, but if your speedometer dont work in your car, google maps show the street speed limit & also shows the speed your going at the sametime.
It does.
Just keep in mind the speed you’re being shown is an “approximation” of the speed you’re actually moving at.
I have the speeding ticket to prove it. 😢
They already know enough about me through other apps… I guess I take it as a small victory by not letting them know where I’m going every day…
There's no competition. I can't use Apple Maps on my Android.
You forgot to mention a great thing about Apple Maps is it shows you where the speed traps are? It’s the best Radar Detector on the market.
Apple Maps does have settings for:
Less turns, Avoid tolls, Avoid highways/busy streets.
Adjust the settings on your phone to stop this.
All the points you mentioned for social interaction for apple maps are all available on Google maps too they work exactly in the same way
Well that’s definitely good to know! Back when I was using Google Maps on Android that definitely wasn’t the case and now that I’m on iPhone it definitely isn’t the case.
Just another reason why “it depends” is the correct answer for which app is better.

Keen to try the Apple maps but cannot find it in the Play Store or an APK anywhere. What gives?
Does apple Maps have a good reliable location history like Google timeline?
I have the same problem with my wife.😂
I now use Apple Maps because its database is nearly as good as Google - but the look of Apple Maps is so much nicer.
Glad someone said it 😅
Using Google Maps on Android vs iOS, you enjoy better integration on an overall more complete mapping application.
Hands down in my opinion Apple Maps is where it is 🍎🏆
I agree completely. That is exactly how I use my maps. I prefer the Apple map directions.
Very interesting, important and timely. Thank you for all the work and then sharing.
Apple Maps does this better with no need to even look at the screen sometimes thanks to the detail in its voice navigation. As far as the reviews . I can honestly say no one uses those reviews . Everyone uses TikTok for reviews now. Even if Apple Maps had all the reviews in the world , TikTok is the go to
@@Äpple-pie-5k that’s your opinion. The whole purpose of this two apps is to get you from point A to point B! If you are fine with losing 30 minutes of your time over poor voice commands that’s also your choice and opinion. Apple Maps has come a long way considering Google had a 6 year head start . Or more. The detail in the 3D view is amazing . Very detailed and helpful. Overall Apple Maps looks better. No need to be cranky over the points each got because your right not each point has the same value, in this case the reviews are a point worth less than the actual navigation point. No one even uses those reviews . Everyone runs to TikTok to see reviews . And the navigation app to get you there. Unless you’re in your 40s 50s and don’t use TikTok
@@Gerardo96-f6c You're not a good listener. I'm NOT fine with losing 30 minutes by missing my turn, which is why I don't use Google Maps.
@@Äpple-pie-5k oohhhp. To be fair your absolutely right. I misread the whole response . It’s crazy how missing a word can change the tone of the conversation entirely. In this case I missed the “isn’t” 😭😂 I apologize.
Nowadays showing appreciation for any thing Apple related will get you 50 people coming at your throat 😭 I definitely messed this one up
The tipping scale for me is google works better is rural travel for navigation AND Google uses Plus Codes.
I also love the "remember parking spot" function as well on Google maps
@@noelv1976 Apple maps automatically remembers mine, Notes it when I park and start walking. I also have Apple Tags in my vehicles, so I can also always find my way to them with the "Find my" which because of the apple Eco system pulls up the directions in apple maps...
Apple seems to give better notifications of upcoming turns. I like the GPS SPEED on Google Maps.
I have a nothing phone, can i try apple maps?
I like apple maps, however I would also like to have the ETA time change to red when there is a lot of traffic
I agree but to be fair, it's not like you can't see if your path is a blue line or if it has lots of red and yellow line segments in it.
Take the sip of your drink every time he says cool
Are you trying to get me drunk?
Which one has better routing around traffic? That’s the review I want to see.
Apple Maps does not allow you to search anything along your route. It only allows you to pick from a few things. This is a dealbreaker for me. That’s why I use Google maps.
This is untrue
@ Fair enough, I stand corrected. But I think they must have added that feature since the last time I used Apple Maps which was quite awhile back.
0:05 202012 huh? How is the spice mining on Arrakis going?
great review thanks a lot!
I love your presentation!!! You say it like it is!!! Love your style!!! I give you 5 stars!!
I specifically picked the best route and it changed it half way. It wasn’t opt in, it was opt out with a 5 second timer. I couldn’t change it while driving and I couldn’t pull up for miles.
what you describe is bassackwards, google changed on me and apple forced me to decide.
John,
I’m a 78-year-old retired cartographer and Mac user.
9:17 Apple Maps also has a website version now, it’s currently in beta!
Yes!
I’m sure some people might see the tie as a cop out. But I literally have both apps installed on my phone for the exact reasons you said. Google is just better overall when trying to find places to go or usability. But at the end of the day I always default to Apple Maps for all of the social integration and navigation.
Great video!
Apple Maps was released in 202012?
I agree with our assessment. How doe these compare with rerouting you due to traffic issues? Waze has always been great for this IMO.
The one feature I wish apple maps had that google maps has is Announce when entering a new state. ik it's not like super important but man really cool thing
One thing is important to see if they open first before you ask directions or you could get to a closed place
Google map can do 1 & 2 🤷🏻
I agree, I have a Lexus with heads up display and it is invaluable when in heavy traffic.
@@BananaBlooD9517 Which setting is it? For Apple it's automatic. It's not automatically happening for me in Google Maps.
@@Äpple-pie-5k After each drive using your car screen there is an option to save your parking location. You can also press the blue icon (your location) to save it.
Personally the only time I need to save my parking spot is when I can't park next to where I'm going
I'm assuming this is only for people who have an iPhone? Since I have an Android phone so I don't have access to Apple Maps. But I use Waze anyway.
I only keep google maps installed for when I need street view.
When I was driving groceries in our little town, I used a free map app called MAPS.
Easy to put needles on addresses and delete them as you went along.
Nice and easy.
Did it come with the iphone. Because that is apple maps
@@ZeerakImran MAPS in offline mode
Google’s French pronunciation needs work, at least in Canada.
@@polishthedayCanadian French is difficult for French nationals to understand.
@@sid35gb If set to English, and you know a smattering of any French dialect, it’s hard to reconcile the word you see in on the street sign in Montreal with what Google says.
I love telling people here to meet me at the pie 9 metro station. If they get the joke, you know they’re from Montreal regardless of whether they speak French, English, Quebecois.
i wanna see a google maps vs apple maps vs waze as navigation apps.
Answer us the special use where you are using navigation without knowing wtf you are going to,
this is not mean, I really want to knows
Apple helps, learns, and perfects
thank you for answering
I used Apple maps a few days ago. It took me to the street and said I arrived. Yeah thanks Apple.
I switched to Google and it took me to the house.
Google Maps integrates with EVs but Apple Maps doesn’t. Google Maps also sets stops for charging as needed along the trip.
Hey completely appreciate this video. Thanks 👍👍
You can share location on Google maps aswell
