  • We added two yearling colts to the herd. After introducing them to each other over the fence for about 3 weeks we put them together. The Palomino and the Bay mare are ok with them but our 17yr old Belgian gelding is just out for blood!

    I love the way the mares, especially the bay, is telling the gelding to piss off and leave youngsters alone!

    It's now 2018 and I hope everything worked out well for all of you. I see a normal behavior pattern, and your lead mare spent a little time diverting Grumpy's attention from the the young-uns.

    You're lucky to have rolling hills like that. It's great for their development and their strength. Where I'm keeping my guy now the ground is flat and I've really noticed the change in his musculature. Hello from Ottawa, Canada. By the way, my TBear is 16 now. Time flies, eh?

    Immediately goes for the mare, drives her and takes her for his own, ignores the foals as they fall right in line the other...I thought it was a gelding but apparently it's a mare, he ignores her completely, and chooses to put himself between them to protect his new "herd" real interesting show of horse and herd behaviour

      Gores an idiot. he likes to look at other horse videos and then critique them on youtube. if you're going to listen to horse people, look for clinton anderson or buck brannaman. buck is the smartest guy around when it comes to horses.

    • @Acadian.FrenchFry

      I have to agree with Kim. Gore just watches videos. He is not hands on working with horses and learning that way. He has his own couple of horses, but I have seen him do really stupid things with his own horses. He's all talk. I agree also look for reputable horse people that actually work with horses hands on... not watching videos doing nothing productive.

    • @hannahc6049

      Mark Barker they just let the colts loose, so halters were on in case a horse needed to be removed quickly.

    • @camillamarie852

      You don't :) They're establishing the herd hierachy - it's not always pretty, but intervening will only make matters worse in the end :)

    • @FilmerOfBobcats
      @FilmerOfBobcats 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Jake isn't trying to kill them. He is driving them ahead of him the way a stallion moves mares. He's establishing his dominance in a way they absolutely understand. And they are responding appropriately by moving away from him in the direction he indicates. Things will settle down.

      You have to remember, horses are not human. No matter how much we try to personify them, they have their own way of handling things and it's not always pretty. The first time introducing horses to each other is always dangerous but normally they work out their hierarchy within anywhere from a few hours to a few days. If problems persist the only thing you can do is separate the horses.

      I'm going to take a guess and say that they're only wearing them right now because should something bad happen in this introduction period they'd be easier to catch.

    • @sararobinson6488
      @sararobinson6488 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      varryglarry Yes, of course, I assumed this too, but it confirms that the halters are there to relieve human anxiety. Injuries can happen in a flash when halters are involved and, unfortunately, halter 'accidents' can be fatal. Halters can also get in the way of physical contact and bonding. If halters are being used temporarily, then humans need to be supervising at all times and be ready to step in. Difficult! :-)

    While your all watching these shows hundreds of horse bands are being killed and tortured because they don't have the land they need to survive here in Arizona. "Big Brother" has been passing bills to legalize the selling of horse meat. So yea act like you all love seeing horses like this but don't do anything to save the natural, wild species in danger of becoming another animal on the endangered list.

      S Madden The title was just being silly. You don't seem to know what play looks like with horses. An aggressive horse doesn't look like this at all. Anyway, horses argue to establish herd hierarchy. The foals would benefit from that. Horses are careful not to hurt each other, don't worry.
