MATTY & CLARE: LOST CAPTURES

  • “Matty has bike-packed plenty of times in Europe and Australia and has passionately shared his infatuation for riding with me. I was fairly new to this way of life and adventure but excited to share this experience on my first bike-packing trip overseas. More than a year of travel ahead and a one-way flight to Oslo, Norway was the beginning of the unknown. The trepidation of leaving our family, friends and jobs behind was tempered by the excitement of the new challenges we would soon be facing. Add to this a strong emotional link to Matty's Grandfather, Bob, who had cycle toured Scandinavia in the 1950's, we felt a powerful draw to this mountainous country to mark the beginning of our world trip. There was also the challenge of tracking down the same locations Bob had captured on an old film camera, recently uncovered in a dusty photo album.
The film documents our daily trials and tribulations, from strong headwinds, torrential rain, the odd argument and uncontrollable happiness as we attempted to re-trace the pedal strokes of Matty's Grandfather. Maybe, we dared to think, even recreate one of his images and come to find his ‘Lost Captures’...” (Clare Nattress)

From your comments in the movie, The great thing is you adapt, well done for the quality of the video, it’s certainly inspiring. I took my 76 yr old mum across Spain 1000km, she had never done it before in her life, she adapted. I wish I had done a video now. Her next adventure is to the south of France and we will use E bikes for that trip, easier to spread the weight.

Following in your grandfather’s footsteps is a great thing to do Matty and really connects you to him.
I hiked across a large part of Norway, Sweden and Finland up in the Arctic circle back in the mid 80’s and loved every minute of it, Norway is on my cycle touring list, Nordcapp to Tarifa is one I intend to cycle.
Have you got any route data you could share, a GPX file? What was the name of the military road you travelled on?
Take care of each other and enjoy your adventures.
    Regards Alan

The scenery is awesome and that you got to follow much of your grandfathers path and see many of the places he had pictures of! I've seen plenty of questions asking about your route but have not really seen responses to those questions. Is that something you can or would share ... GPX or maybe Ride with GPS routes, etc.?
