    You cannot beat Martijn Doolaard for a beautiful, admirable, story. Both cycling chronicles are superior films, The books are keepsakes. Now I am readying for the next installment of how this amazing man develops an off-grid compound of stone cottages in the Italian Alps. Breathtaking scenery, exceptional workmanship.

    In August I decided to give up everything I owned and walked to Scotland all the way down from the south coast of England
    3 months walking. I made it as far as Whitby in North Yorkshire, after visiting Wale's, London, Lincoln and Bath plus many more towns, it was an empowering moment in my life. And I'll make it to Scotland when I resume in March 2023

    • @iLeetjeeh
      @iLeetjeeh ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That sounds amazing! Would you mind delving a little bit deeper into your journey? You said you walked from the south coast to Whitby. Ofcourse I do not know your starting point. But if I look up the distance between Lands End (Wales) to Whitby it says roughly 440miles (708km). So 3 months walking would mean you walked 4.8miles (7.7km) a day. Withouth sounding disrespectful or snobbish...that sounds a bit low? Now I understand you didn't just walk in a straight line. You've mentioned visiting London, Lincoln and Bath. So I assume you walked along the south and then went up? When I plot that into Google Maps it comes out to roughly 527miles (848km). Which would mean 5.85miles (9.4km) a day. Now again, without sounding arrogant, disrespectful or snobbish...a healthy person can walk 10km in less then 2 hours. Furthermore Google Maps says that it would take 7 days to walk. Ofcourse that doesn't include sleeping, occasional stops/sightseeing and general resting. But still 7 days --> 3months is a huge difference. Again I'm asking because this is something I would LOVE to do! I'm just (annoyingly) curious about your method/choises!

I've traveled the world by moto, 30+ countries - Prudhoe Bay, Ushuaia, Europe, 21,000 miles in one trip around the world (RTW) - but everywhere I've been there are always adventure bicyclists! The Hall Road in Alaska, the Road of Bones in Siberia, Ruta 40 in Patagonia. So impressive. Always the bicyclists.

    This will be a fun series to follow! Interesting to see someone on a similar life journey, so to say. I also left the city although instead of cycling, I went long distance hiking, and instead of buying a cheap property in Italy, I went to Sweden... I have the same tent though. I took mine to Iceland where it started moulding after a month or so but I still love that hilleberg sand colour. Thunderstorms in my tent are my worst nightmare though. Insanely powerful video on the bike. Your life is incredibly inspiring. The videos dig deep and share another way to experience our world. I found your videos over the holidays and began watching your cabin building adventure. You had a plan, and the world is watching you create a new life in an incredible place filling your viewers with a sense of awe. Tonight after watching Two Years on a Bike, I found myself feeling restless after a year of relative isolation. I grew up in the Pacific N.W. and now live in Palm Springs, CA so many of your travels down the coast were familiar. But you have taken life to another level. Thank you for sharing your experiences. It is incredibly inspiring. When I was 24, I did set out on what was supposed to be a tour from my home town in the Netherlands all the way to Kyrgyzstan. I did not make it there - after reaching Helsinki I had enough, and simply took a ferry to St. Petersburg, then flew home. But I learned so much about myself. In my case, I learned that I actually really like the certainties of having a job and a fixed home. But that was really a discovery! Because for a long time I had been pondering on what it would be like to truly be off the grid for a long time. I'm 33 now and am fully settled with a family. But I know for sure that if I had not made that journey that I would always have been wondering the "what if". And now I know that, at least for me, ordinary family life with an ordinary job actually is the way. I still really like watching videos like this though. There is so much beautiful stuff out there on the road and it is great to be out there for a while.

When you were describing your old city life routine... it mataches with everything I am living now and it is so frustrating that we spend 99% of our life not responding to our prime instincts: getting outside, working with our bare hands, with our body, connecting with nature. The way you articulate the lack of control and overwhelming times riding through the desert is so spot on. Yet
    It revealed to you who you are in times of adversity. Cycling is beautiful that way.

      That's a very simplistic take on a very complex theme. You need some kind of financial back up or a nest egg or something to fall back on when the journey is over. A lot of people struggle to make ends meet and can't take a year off to go travelling or cycling around the world regardless of how inspiring his life is, which it obvioulsy is.

I was laughing with you because there was nothing you could do about it but ride it out, and so you did.
