  • Award winning film about a 64 year old's 540 mile bikepacking journey across the Colorado Trail. I hope this doc inspires you to get outside and experience God's creation. It is one of His many gifts to humanity.
    "God created everything through Him, and nothing was created except through Him." John 1:3
    Production Background:
    This documentary took 21 days to shoot, months to edit, and took up nearly 2 terabytes of footage and files. Filming came with many challenges such as long tiring shoot days, late nights, bike crashes, close calls with search and rescue, water shortages, and sore legs. But every bit was worth it in the end.
    Directed, Shot, and Edited by Davis Yates

    4 years ago my son and I ran into an elderly gentleman at a back country alpine lake in southern Colo, it was about 6 in the morning and we were both shocked to see this guy (he mustve walked past our camp very early without us knowing it), turned out this guy was a very knowledgeable fly fisherman, so we picked his brain for an hour about the discipline, I asked if he fished anywhere else, like the Madison or any of the innumerable great trout waters in this country and he had fished many of them and he said they were all worth fishing if a person gets the chance but he added something as we were saying our goodbyes that has stuck with me since and that was this; he said "son, you can fish your entire life in Colorado and it will never give you a reason to leave." I feel the same way now about Colorado mountain biking, I know there are many awesome places to ride bikes all over the world but Colorado has all you could ever want in my opinion.

I am also newly retired and was diagnosed with a brain tumor 2.5 years ago but have exceeded my life expectancy already. I'm a fit 63 year old and don.t have time on my side. My buddy Ryan Van Duzer is an incredible adventure cyclist as well, and I see he commented a couple of years ago about your beautiful trek on the CT. Your passion and journey to self-fulfillment at age 64 is truly inspiring. Thank you for the wonderful documentary that saw Dave succeed from end to end!

    You look in great shape for a 64 year old man. I remember being a volunteer on the trail in 1987. We were the crew which linked up and finished the trail near Durango. We who were from flatlander states had a new feeling in our chests as we hiked to the trail from our camp each morning. That 13,271 foot peak must have been really tough on you. I only got up to a little over 10,000 feet
    elevation when I was there. Your story will inspire more seniors to give it a go. Colorado's mountains are so beautiful. Thank you.

    My wife and I rode it in 1995. Ton of snow that year. It was awesome. Lots of bike pushing/walking. When we popped out at Watertown Canyon we decided to keep going and spent the rest of the year cycling the western US. My wife still rides her 93 Rockhopper she used on that trip. She won’t give it up ever. I’ll tell you this. In my opinion you have to really pare down what you take. Water and food is the constant challenge. Our bikes were so over weighted when we started. We diverted to Silverton and dumped a ton of stuff. After that it was ok. With rigid forks you couldn’t carry anything up front. We typically had 2 gallons of water on each bike at anytime and only had one water crisis after that. We would get off the trail to resupply a various towns, sometimes the resupply was disappointing to say the least. But on good days where we could ride all day and not walk you knew you were in Paradise.

    • @davebaumann5567
      @davebaumann5567 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Congrats on riding the whole trail! To keep the weight down, I only carried enough supplies to last 3-4 days and filtered water along the way. Gotta admit that I ran out of water more than once but you soldier on.
      2019 was a huge snow year also. Some of the footage you see me pushing thru thigh deep snow on Georgia pass, the back of Keystone and the Ten Mile range above Breckenridge. It was wild and I loved it!
      I then had to drag my bike thru 2 avalanches in the San Juans.
      Did you guys ride up Stoney pass from Silverton? That climb about did me in.
      Thanks for your comments - I bet you will never forget the MTB on the CT :)

I'm 57 now and have plans to do the same thing at 60 on the GDT. I'll also have to do it a section at a time. You should seriously consider purchasing a Garmin Inreach not only to allow you to contact your wife while in the wilderness but also as a safety measure in case you get seriously hurt or suffer another kind of medical emergency.
