    This song is actually about how BTS are afraid of losing their love and passion for music. They are afraid that music will turn into a burden in their lives. Is such a relatable thing and this happens to people a lot when their passion turns into their stressful thoughts making them want to stop doing it.

      I feel like the song has two different stories, one about their personal stuff- the loss of passion and the story about the album- shadow,ego etc. trying to escape the shadow but either taken over by it or accepting it and merging with it!

      lil meow meow Different stories and yet one and the same in a way ☺️ Death is neededfor transformation... even with passions. Because once your shadows kill your passion once, it will be reborn like a phoenix, this time using the shadows, like you said, accepting them and merging with them, to elevate the art. That's how I see this anyways, but it really makes me think something new every time I watch it/hear it/hear others view on it, it's so thought provoking, I love kt

      I dont think the songs only on losing passion I believe . If u focus on the second half of the lyrics they are refusing to let that happen, and embracing their passion and letting it live through them. Just like hw it was in Shadow interlude where they come in terms with their shadow to follow their passion. It’s stressful but we gotta accept it to break free and take control. You can see this in the choreo too. First half the shadow was controling the main dancer but in the second half he takes control over them and turn them into their wings.

    My mind goes immediately to Carl Jung. The shadows (fear, doubt, self hate, ambition, etc...) in black, the shirtless guy trying to fight them off. Jung says you have to accept the shadows inside yourself, and integrate them to become a whole balanced person. The shirtless guy finally joins the shadows, and starts to fly. He has faced his own shadows, and become whole.

    HERE WE GO: I think BTS is referring to their art form in this song, they mention in the lyrics. Art is a part of them, a contrast between light and dark. We already see the connection between Wings here. The dancers dressed in black are the focal dancer’s wings, his art, which at the beginning were fighting against him. He breaks away finally, only to try to fly (at the top of the stairs) without them, only to realize that he needed the struggle to fly and to express himself fully (he was about to give up and stop dancing/ art/ creating and die like the quote said). At the end he tames his wings to work in synchrony, allowing for a cohesive piece. He realizes his love for the art of it all and uses his adverse experiences to lift into life. END. Black Swan is a bop and a half, indeed.

    This has also become one of my fav BTS songs as well. It resonates with me as an artist but the actual composition of the song is both deeply heart-wrenching and then soul-lifting. It's so easy to listen to that I accidentally put it on repeat for 30 mins as I worked and never once got sick of it AND it helped me focus. The comfort I get from Black Swan is amazing and the fusion with interpretive dance and classical music for the art film is truly beautiful.

    I think you got the main message, and as you said, art is subjective and can be interpreted in many different ways. But I do think if you also consider the lyrics, the message changes just a little bit. Im also an artist (paints and canvas in my case) and this song really spoke to me and touched my own insecurities about my art - and just generally about the passion that drives me forward. The lyrics spoke about what happens, if art (music in their case) doesnt make them exited and inspired anymore, what if they loose the love they have for it, what happens then? I've had a hard time lately and before art was the thing that could bring me back and ease my mind, I'v had difficulties with it. Of course in their level I can only imagine what the pressure, the expectations and the inevitable influence of sales add to that.
    So I feel like the 6 figures in black clothes are his inner demons, his shadows perhaps, a bit like you said. The fear and doubt that doesnt let him fly and instead tries to imprison him in a imagined cage (as the cage is only made of light so it is not real more like a mind tricking him into thinking he is imprisoned?) and he fights back so hard and finally managing to escape leaving his shadows behind...but he still cant fly and instead has to walk deeper into himself? Where he finds his strength, more like subduing the shadows and finally he is able to fly after accepting those parts of himself.
    I saw someone saying that this gray mall is what's inside the tall building in Boy with Luv (that has the persona sign), which is also kinda telling how people might hide their inner struggles behind a bright smile. Also when you said it reminded you of Fake Love house it could also fit into that narrative. In Fake Love the building was falling apart because of the inner turmoil of the person, and here is what's left.
    Also I kinda love how there are 7 dancers too - perhaps you also could read this as a telling about the dynamic of BTS, that only when they come together they are able to fly...but I think that's probably not the case.
    I feel like I need to rewatch that 100x times before I can get a clearer picture.

    The dancers - Music (Art)
    The guy without the shirt - BTS (Artist)
    This song to sum it up in simple words talks about the relationship between the art and the artist.
    The lyrics talk about how there comes a point in an artist's life when the love for their art fades away. The art no longer makes you feel emotions, you feel blank. You don't feel the passion, you don't feel anything. You sink and you reach the bottom of this dark pit. The one thing that you love, you don't feel that anymore.
    And when you reach rock bottom is when you realise that that's all you have, the art, or in this case music is all you have, Music is what makes you alive. The same thing that brings you down will bring you back up again because that's where your soul truly lies. And so you rise up again, the black swan in you rises and it's a cycle. Because that's what the relationship between art and the artist is. It's complicated, vulnerable and personal.
    This is shown perfectly in the video where you see the other dancers first bringing him down and him struggling back and forth trying to get out of the cage and their grasp. He then gets rid of them and is all alone and goes further down and reaches his darkest point. Thats when you see the other dancers following him again. He then pushes them away and finally gains control and the same dancers bring him back again and he soars and flies in the end. Showing that music lifted him up again.
    This is my opinion and interpretation of the lyrics and the video. But Gosh. What a masterpiece. I LOVE BTS.

    When I first watched the music video, I saw the people in the black suits as the main dancer's shadows (similar to the shadow's in Suga's interlude). In the end however, I saw the people in black as ARMY because, yes. ARMY is AMAZING and we support BTS with passion and love. But with that comes the fame that they're afraid of (explained in Shadow). We give them what they love and are scared of the most, which I think is represented when the main dancer is lifted up, flying. Flying up in fame, but also flying up with the support of the ones who love them so much that we will do ANYTHING to keep them happy, even if that is to give them some space. But in the end, we just want what's best for them, and we support them. So we lift them up higher in happiness as well. (Sorry for the confusing and terrible explanation, but I tried my best haha) This was my take on the end.

    One thing I absolutely love about this dance is that the main dancer emulates the "black swan" with the arm movements. Replicating the movement of wings flapping is one of the most important things in the classical ballet of Swan Lake. It's positively beautiful!

    Masterpiece it is......... for me
    Bts is telling their story....in initial days, they loved what they were doing and were passionate about, and everything (they, themselves, their talent, their passion, production house,)were helping them as their wings to fly (they were the WHITE SWAN).... later on.... pressure from everyside comes in (their inner fears and demons, to always be PERFECT, not able to have fun in what they usually loved earlier, there work timings, what not???)........
    In order to become and remain perfect (BLACK SWAN), they underwent so many harsh situations...... as a result they were not able to love what they were passionate about, hence, experiencing their first death.....the part with the laser lights according to me is the place where they are not able to break free from these pressures... and after that, they escape it and get free from them represented by the the choreo before being back to a normal human being at the escalators..... the choreo at the escaltors represents their will to fly but they are not able to sore high.... they understood that they are not able to connect with others as they were able to do with others as earlier.... they understands thats these shadows will not leave them and they have to take every thing under their wings.... various pressures come one by one and try to discourage them, but not only they fight them but also tames them..... they take every thing into their stride and try to fly..... finally they are able to fly again but this time even higher....... ...... being a BLACK SWAN is not easy......

    YES!!!! use their inner demons to fly! Escaping a literal box! I kept thinking how people have tried to Box BTS, label them, what are they, KPOP? IDOLs? Artists? Rappers? HIP HOP? In this art film, they escape that box (the lights the form a box/cage) locking them in, I think they ultimately embrace all of it and become their true selves and soar! But of course there's so many other layers!

    The force that holds you back is the same force that supports you. That Shadow is within you. It's part of you.
    And yes, it can be any art form, but it can also be anything that anyone feels so passionate about that they are incomplete without it. Being without it is the first, more painful death.
    This fits with Suga's Shadow song as well. It's also part of the Map of the Soul theory by Jung.

    I totally get what you're saying! When I listened to the lyrics, I thought about that everyone has a dream or something that makes them happy and gives them energy, but sometimes you can get to a point where that thing doesn't give you that much energy anymore, and that thing doesn't make your heart beat as fast as before, so now you're questioning what the thing is that makes you happy and maybe you need to search for something else, another dream and just take a risk, and that's maybe where your story kinda fits in, that's just what I think tho' :)

    It reminds me of Fake Love for a few reasons. First, the color palette this film is toned with is the same as some scenes in Fake Love - muted, dusty blues and yellows. Also, Fake Love has expressive contemporary dance choreo. Both songs feature hooks with lyrical triplets. And finally, the set is a little reminiscent.

    the whole motif is very relevant to how burnout is explained in psychology, and it’s extremely prevalent to anyone. the fear or reality of burning out the last of your passionate fuel to keep the fire going is such a heartbreaking and destructive feeling. the fear the boys have/had of losing their sense of making music/performing is so relatable to everyone else who finds themselves having to keep up with their passion for the sake of income, status, or just simply feeling obligated to. it’s very similar to how athletes can lose their childhood competitiveness once they’re just playing for the check or especially IN “Black Swan”. if you haven’t seen any renditions of it, i’d recommend it. to think this is just 1(!) of the endless interpretations you can take from this song/dance/visual/etc. 🤯🤯🤯

  • @kimia9
    @kimia9 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    as an artist who experienced burn out myself, i see the song as, the shadow of exhaustion and fear doing good art follows you, holds you back. but even when you are too exhausted to stay passioned, its way more painful to stop your art.worst than death. so you have to learn how to get back on your feet, and synchronize with you shadow to fly and do the best art possible

  • @seconeee8446
    @seconeee8446 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My interpretation:
    The song and the dance represent someone with a certain passion. The person followed their passion because he/she loved to do it, cause it fulfilled them-
    but over time their passion became something they *had* to do because of the pressure that was put on them by others/money/society’s expectations.
    So the person started doing it for others and not for themselves anymore. Because they *had* to.
    They did it up to the point where they couldn’t enjoy it anymore
    The feeling while doing it changed from love and joy to hatred and the pressure of having to satisfy others with it.
    So they lost their passion.
    The dance shows the person fighting to get their passion back. To get back the feelings they had when they first started doing it. To find a reason to do it for themselves again.
    (I hope the explanation is understandable ..because I’m not a native speakerXD)

    There are a lot of theories about this song, choreography, lyrics, even about the autotune.
    But about the dancers and the choreo: the ones which are in black represent the shadow/bad personality/alter ego of the shirtless boy (also the fact that he's shirtless also represent how a part of himself is naked without the presence of the shadow/alter ego, etc). At the beginning of the video the "shadows" try to be a part of the shirtless boy but he doesn't want to or it's afraid to do so, then he escapes from them and feels lonely doing so (when he's going down the stairs you can feel that loneliness) and then at end he again fight his shadows until embracing them at the end and see that they can be the reason of him to be complete and feel free (as in the end of the video when the black-shirt dancers lift him up). There's almost the same reference in the film "Black Swan" which of course has inspired this dancers and the song.

    I had a fairly similar read of the meaning as you, but with some slight differences. If we look at the shadows as the music world/industry itself, the protagonist (we’ll go with that for now) is following the established industry in the beginning and that open sequence with the hands, they are moving him (versus the closing scene where he’s moving first, but I’m getting ahead of myself) and he’s trying to fly but his feet never leave the ground. Throughout the first half, he just wants to explore his art form to the fullest, but he’s constantly being pulled back and caged by the expectations of the genre/medium etc.
    In the second half, he’s throwing off the shackles of what is the acceptable norm for his art, and while there is heavy resistance at first, he sticks true to himself and eventually the rest of the industry follows and embraces what he’s doing and allows him to finally be lifted off the ground and soar into the limitless sky of creative expression.
    God, this video is so amazing.

  • @untitledaccount3338
    @untitledaccount3338 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    'Fake Love' feels similar because it has a similar color palette! The sets of both videos are also run-down sorts of buildings. Thematically, it could be that BTS, as artists, don't want to let their passion for music die out, and so they overcome their own demons, determined to keep going (as seen in this film). Should their love for music wane, however, they will risk finding themselves in the 'fake love' situation-determined to devote themselves to their love of music, but ultimately hurting themselves because they're refusing to acknowledge that this love has become 'fake'. And then they'd have to learn how to love themselves all over again in the advent of having lost what has been so central to their identities as artists. BTS is contemplating their own "first death", and whether or not it will come to pass. ("Do your thang." >>> "What's my thang?")
    Edit: "Suga's Interlude", the one with Halsey, also talks about this! There's a part in the lyrics that goes, "I wonder what's in store / if I don't love it anymore..."

    I personally thinking about SHADOW.
    How it devour you. Yet when u go without them (when the man finally break apart from the people in black. He alone, he looks back, and it silence. Suga :no one told me its so lonely up here), its lonely (Jung said to be a solid enitity one shall balance their persona and shadow in their conciousness).
    Thus in the end, he finally accept his shadows, merge with them. Thus he finally can fly. By accepting your shadow, you developing yourself.

    After reading some comments in here I understand the meaning a lot better (thank you to those people) and have come up with my own that I'd like to talk about.
    Now the fast paced instrumentals in the MV made me feel pressured, confused and dettained as if I was suffocating it could mean when BTS were trying to make it to their dream. The part I really liked was when J-Hope sang and the pace slowed down, allowing me some time to breathe, I feel as if that meant sort of giving up? or maybe that they're slowing down after reaching fame. The parts that really captivated me though was the low notes on the cello part and the violin skidding over the notes because whenever I hear an off-beat, off-note or generally something that doesn't fit the piece, it instantly reminds me of 'mental instability'. Those are the most important parts to me from the song and I thought I'd share my thoughts because it's rather interesting. Love your Videos Deacs! Keep up the good work! :)

    you're correct in some aspects. it's about being scared of losing your passion for whatever your passion is. bts is terrified that they will loose the passion of music and it will make them feel trapped. but i felt this myself bc i was a dancer and this piece hit me like a ton of bricks.

    18:15 fake love had scenarios that represent parts of the mind or fears. this scenario is also the mind, I put in place of fears of fake love the shadows and add your interpretation which is pessimism and thoughts of everyday problems. For this reason and the melody that has the same structure or is very similar to the beginning of fake love.

    I think the dance translates the acceptance of yourself (your shadow), the person you truly are. That's why the main dancer is pushing the dancers in black back, and then at the end he's accepted them (the shadows), he dances with them and they lift him up (opposite to what Suga said in the interlude : 'don't let me fly')

    The moment I saw the MV I thought it was someone at first running away from the dark thoughts inside his head and then after the stairs he is fighting his own demons and not running away like a coward until like you said he conquered it all and won. I believe BTS would want that meaning to be out there any day 😍😍

  • @PurpleRM1

    For me is like the whole thing Persona/shadow stuff. The shirtless/black Swan guy is like you as a whole/persona and he's constantly pushing and fighting his shadows until he encounters himself alone or gets to a moment when he realizes all around him and go down the stairs to his mind and the fights a little more with his iner self and then he kinda embrace his shadows and dance together until all of them as unit make the Swan fly in harmony.
    At least that's what I think.

  • @user-mm1hx8ud9s
    @user-mm1hx8ud9s 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My theory
    Black swan wants to fly as he wants. But the will of shadow is stronger than his making him not to fly toward the direction he wants. So the swan decides to get rid of shadow in that he can fly by his own will. But shadows resist against so it’s not easy. (You can see the moves, cage made of light part) He succeeds eventually and becomes a free white swan. But soon he realizes that he cannot fly without the shadow because the power to fly high in the sky is from the shadow. So he decides to go deeper to meet the shadows (going down to 1st floor) and he decides to accept the shadow and becomes the shadow too (Scary Choreography). He now acts like a shadow and gets the power to control the shadow and shadows too follow his will. (Choreography becomes same each other) At the end he have both flying ability and the control of that ability. He becomes the true black swan and flies.

    I don't think anyone really has the right to tell you if your theory is "right" or "wrong". the point of art (both in the form or music and dance) is meant to be interpreted differently and even if BTS had a specific idea in mind, its important we still keep and think our own perspective of the different symbols and moves in the video. One of the reason why I love being apart of ARMY is reading everyone's interpretation and theories and sharing it with everyone.

    I believe that K-pop has made me appreciate choreography more not just in music but in movies like fighting choreography so when I saw this video I was blown away by the choreography. My friend got annoyed that a) BTS wasn't in it and b) it (apparently) doesn't sound like BTS.

    you should watch Suga's "shadow" intro explained. because people dressed in black really look like that guy shadow, they copy him and follow him even though he tries to run away. in the end they connecr and become a one persone. also have to pay attention to the fact, that there is 7 dancers, the bird cage he was trapped in, the words on the walls, the reflection of dancers in the water. all of this has a meaning. bts again made us to use our brain hah. the fact that they are talking about dancer/artist death scares me, because it makes me think that one day they will leave this entertainment business and we will always remember them. and yes, the visuals at first made me think of fake love.

    E no fim aprendeu a se conhecer e conviver com suas sombras, elas o prendem mas também o impulsionam quando sabe quem é e também conhece suas sombras. A coreografia também me faz sentir como se um passaro recém nascendo aprendendo a usar suas asas, está preso qd não sabe usá-las porém pode voar qd aprende a controla-las, a primeira morte: " o mundo é o ovo, para nascer para um novo mundo precisa antes morrer para o mundo anterior" citação do livro Damian que foi usado tbm nos outros trabalhos do grupo. Sobre parecer com a vibe de fake love, concordo tbm até na letra, fala muito de se conhecer e se encarar, qd não se conhece e não se ama acaba sendo controlado pelos outros e também por seu lado obscuro. Não vive com paixão e acaba apenas sobrevivendo( mesmo que estar morto). Primeiro se conheça, se ame mesmo com suas sombras, e viva com paixão.
