This is modern dance, not ballet. Ballet is a bit different. The story being told is one trying to run from their shadows, confronting them, and accepting them. The lyrics are talking about how losing one’s passion for doing what they love is akin to death, and is more painful than literal death, and tells the story of how BTS once feared they they’d lose their passion and maybe to an extent still do, but they realize that music is their everything. The shadow can be both a motivator, and a block. It depends on how you associate with it. If you fight your shadows, they’ll hinder you. If you accept them and integrate them into your conscious life, then they can be used to your advantage.
Fear can either hinder you, or it can be your strength.

Julia Crawford WOW 😮 what a nice, concise explanation of this video. It makes a lot of sense and helps tie it back to the Shadow comeback trailer as well as Jung's theories... I'm not smart enough to see those connections myself so I'm thankful for people like you who leave helpful comments!! Now it seems so obvious haha

It reminds me of something I learned years ago that was so helpful when I was performing: your body can't tell the difference between excitement and fear - the chemical response is the same. So instead of focusing on the nerves, focus on the buzz and tell yourself that you're excited instead of nervous - get those butterflies in formation!
It all goes to the struggle: fighting against the shadows is instinctual, but learning to harness that energy, to lean into it and make it work *for* you - what an epiphany.
I'm so not ready for this album, but I'm *so* ready for this album. 😂

I love your interpretation. I am really taking in everyone's thoughts on this. I believe this is art in its truest form. So many interpretations are valid.
I was a dancer for just 10 years... not professionally, but as a personal passion.
Dance is not easy. It requires focus, hard work, hours of practice, soreness, bruises...
but the thing it takes the most is emotional energy to express your deepest spirit as movement.
I thought quitting dance was the "right thing to do" for my life at the time, but as soon as I quit dancing, my health deteriorated. Now, my health is at a point when I can no longer dance.
The Martha Graham quote at the beginning of this film set it up for me.
As I watched Black Swan, I realized what was happening, "His wings are his dance..." and I began to sob.
Art is not just a creative hobby. It is a laborious gestation and birthing. I can only imagine the pain each of our 7 has experienced, realizing that what gave them wings-the beautiful black wings they once longed for as ducklings-would become a burden they wanted to cut off.
For me this film expresses the torture of the craft, and their realization that they must learn to fly without their wings.
P.S. Ballet is very traditional, conservative, rigid. This is a genre called contemporary dance. It combines a variety of dance influences.

Maybe... but this song was just for the video. The other songs they've put out from the album seem to be the same kind of music they've been doing before, pop/hip hop (unless they include this song on the album). So don't get your hopes up too much, but do I think there will be something special about the album based on the whole art focus and what the members have been teasing about the album.

  • @nabilarusnoor

the easy interpretation of this song would be:
    - the first half of the song talks about losing passion in something you love; in their case, making music. but;
    - the second half of the song they talk about trying to not let go of that said passion.
    made me shiver.. it's beautiful.

Yes, exactly. The quote in the beginning is what the song is about. Losing ones passion and in the end learning that your love for music/dance/art/or what ever you are into is the only thing you have. When that's gone/taken away for whatever reason, you die and it's very painful, so you try to get to not lose it, try to get it back. So in the ending of the MV the black swan was flying again.

I been seeing people say that this album isn't just an album, it's a movement. And that statement feels so incredibly true and real. And I personally feel so proud and amazed to not only be witnessing BTS make history, but to be a part of history by being ARMY. It's going to be record breaking. And it's going to be unlike anything they've released so far, experimental and genre-hopping and just pure art. I'm so excited.
And I've been seeing a lot of people saying that the level of autotune is too much, that it ruins the song for them. But I think that it fits the piece perfectly, the art film and the dance. It's put to be a really fascinating juxtaposition with the music and the dance. The contrast between the styles and the two different time eras (classical music and modern autotune) is another level of contrast. It makes is slightly uncomfortable to listen to, but somehow not in a bad way. And the strings in the middle, when it sounds like it's kind of falling apart and dissonant, very jarring but absolutely fascinating. It's put there purposefully and as a statement and I love it.
It's always so nice to hear your interpretation and ideas and theories about the song and the message behind not only the mv but they lyrics and music too. And once again, you seem to be spot on. I will admit that the first time I listened to the song (and read the lyrics) it made me sad. But then I realised the message of hope in the second verse and was relieved that they can turn their pain and apathy into inspiration and get themselves out of any rut that they feel like they're in. I'm just blown away by this song. And the dance, holy shit. There's something ugly about it, seeing the bones and muscles moving under his skin so clearly, but there's so much beauty in it's strangeness. An amazing contemporary performance. It truly is an Art Film.
This is way too long (as usual) so I'll end it here. The album version is different to this, I've already seen other people mention it and you've asked if you should react to it. It would be nice if you did because musically it's similar but very different. I'd like to see what you think about it. You really do make my day with your reactions. I hope you enjoy the comeback! Annyeong~~ 💜💜💜

I think when he broke free and escaped the shadows he noticed that he still couldn't fly - like he tried to do it on top of those stares but nope didnt work and instead he went deeper (into himself? if this whole building represents mind where we can see the inner struggle). The I think he voluntarily started to fight for power with those shadows, facing his inner demons, and finally as you said learned to work with them and thats when he finally got to fly and unlike in the beginning, the shadows were lifting him up and not controlling.
And if you put that into the context of that quote in the beginning...well the meaning may change then too. Did they concur the fear of loosing their passion for their art? Or despite that fear do they still decide to fly, knowing someday their first death must come and they will have to give it up, at least the exact thing they have right now..
This song is so deep, touches my own insecurities about art but also is kinda hopeful. And I love how everybody interpret it slightly different ways, ahh art truly is a gift to humankind.

BTS are returning to James Cordon’s The Late Late Show to perform BLACK SWAN on January 28th
Edit: their creativity... I think that BTS with BigHit has consistently done something different to the rest of Kpop, which they have always got pushback for. I’m talking even the basics, that they write their own material, in the early days they were laughed at by the rest of Kpop “community” for being “too poor” to afford songwriters.
What the song is about... I mean yes you can take it to mean the conflict of balancing their creative control and external expectations etc... but this album series is called MAP OF THE SOUL so it’s really goes all the way down to a personal individual level.
Not sure if you’ve checked out any explanation videos for Interlude:Shadow? By Bookish Theories or DKDKTV would be good ones, that cover the wider reference to Carl Jung’s Map of the Soul and the key concepts involved in the journey to “individuation” - the resolution of the different aspects (persona, ego, shadow) of ourselves to become oneself

"This song makes me proud to be a musician." I think for this comeback, they're really celebrating and shining light on all art forms and showing how important and powerful they can be. It really is inspiring and I've seen a lot of people talking about how it has reinvigorated their passion for music and art, me included. I agree with everything you said at the end - I really think this is going to be a historic album. After their short vacation last fall, their company said they were planning to "present themselves anew as artists." I think they will completely break out of any stereotype/box that they've been placed in with this album. If the western music industry doesn't recognize their artistry after this just because of a superficial 'kpop boyband' label, then they're fools.

I was so overwhelmed by this video, seeing him freeing himself at the end was so powerful, I got goosebumps and geared up.

“This song sees BTS dive deep into their inner selves as artists and faces the shadows they had once hidden. The song lends voice to their fears that one day music will no longer be able to move or touch them. It is a confession of an artist who has truly learned what music means to himself.”

I really like your theory since it's not something I heard before, but BTS isn't known for keeping themselves in a box creatively. It's true that people who don't know BTS do put them in a box. I'd think they have closed that chapter with the song IDOL saying you can call me artist or idol, i don't care.
This time the 'shadows' don't represent their fears or bad things, but it represents their passion. It's their passion and love for music, related to at the point in their carreer around beginning of 2018 when they considered disbanding and also what the future holds if the passion and love will stay. But then half-way through the song it's them realizing the passion and love for music will always stay and that music is eternal for them. It's BTS looking maturely at their existence and conflict with being an artist.

This prelude song is a confession that BTS delivers as an artist. The first English subtitle of art film is Martha Graham's saying, 'The dancer dies twice. The first death is when the dancer stops dancing.' "This death is much more painful." "Brack swan" was inspired by Martha Graham's sayings. As the dancer dies in his first death, as a dancer, when he is no longer on stage as an artist, BTS says that the more music I play through the 'brack swan', the more I'm going to die if the music doesn't impress me or tremble, but every time my voice is deep inside Paradoxically, the moment I hear the Black Swan inside me, I only have music. This is about deeply conveying the confession as an artist who has worn out and truly knows what music means to her through mature and autobiographical lyrics.

In my opinion, BTS teams really good in interpreting themes.. musically..
For example, for this song, the vocal is like being buried under water (or something.. sorry i dont know the correct term)... sound a little bit distant... Portraying inner feeling struggle.. something like that..
Maybe your should check their other songs like

You have to hear the single on Spotify (or ApplePlay/iTunes). It's amazing, and the contrasts are gorgeous. And I am SO IN LOVE with this new dark, deep, art concept. It's brilliant and so very appeals to my inner goth princess. I am living for this comeback. It's everything.

6:26 i’m crying . U just open my eyes. I feel like i’ve been selfish to bts. Yes I’m one of those Army’s who put them in a pedestal before. I miss their old style I admit but I’m not one of those who left them because their messages are changing me for the better. They are so creative and I thought why they need to change those styles they we’re already good. But I realize I’m the one who was not growing. I will let my boys FLY 😭 whatever they do I will support them. There is no limit to their creativity. They are ARTIST. Mahnnnn I’m going to cry in the corner.

I was not a fan of contemporary dance. Until now. That was so good. You could see the swan overcome his struggles. The song is perfect love how they blended the voices to be one. Genius.

'Swan' song is very important to artists and dancers as it signified their last performance or their retirement.
This song and performance actually spoke to me a lot. The fear of losing love for your craft. ..or your first dead. As an artist who's losing passion as life goes by and it force you to work on projects that you are not passionate in but need to in order to support yourself. Also living in a country with limited freedom of speech and expression just kill me inside daily.
A struggling main dancer that try to fly in a dark and abandoned broken surrounding, plus the suffocating and dying feeling from the lyrics. The black suite dancers that act like obstacles and negativities trying to hold the main dancer back and put him into a box. But in the end the main dancer fight back and eventually use those darkness to help propel him to fly again just like how artists use their life experiences and struggling to inspire their works.
This is how I interpret this performance. It does help sooth me and inspire me more after watching and listen to BTS 'Black Swan'. Thank you so much BTS, MN Dance Company, and Big Hit.

I felt that in the beginning the ego is in the conscious self (upper level) and struggles to find cohesion with the shadow... then the ego descends into the unconscious self (lower level) and this allows the ego to successfully integrate and exist with his shadow. The uncomfortable point before the decent into the unconscious (via the change in the music and the dancers movements) really captures how emotionally vulnerable and turbulent taking those first steps into individuation are said to be.. so so beautiful and I know the way I perceived it is probably the most shallow interpretation.
Edit: gosh I love that you really take the time to understand. Thank you for being so consistent with your journey with us and the guys.

Agreed, and then the lyrics letting us into their deepest thoughts and fears of losing their passion for music? Oof this album is literally going to be about them and I kinda get the feeling they're gonna reveal lots of things to us. I'm freaking proud of them for being so brave 💜

I really really really like your take on Black Swan. A lot. You mentioned that BTS doesn’t want to be grouped into anything, and that is so true. They’ve showed us time and time again just how eclectic their sound is. Most of the breakdowns I’ve watched were saying that BTS is burnt out by the one thing they are the most passionate about. But you’re saying that music is what gives them hope when they are consumed by the shadows because they have the freedom to create something so out of the box, something so memorable, that whatever they have to overcome is so worth it. And there is no sense of pride without tackling your biggest fear, your shadow(s). And the realization that you have to work with it and not against it is just WOW! 🤯

I'm too late to comment but there are tons of things happening to Bangtan that we know of, tons of things we dunno of and tons of things we can figure out due to the members age, not only cause they've grown a LOT but cause of what it represents in Korea and what it means it's gonna happen in the near future, sadly. Definitely lots of changes reflecting it which excites me tremendously and also fills me with sadness from time to time, not sure how to explain it in English without being specific. There's an unwritten rule in ARMY world in which we don't tlk about it, and we won't til the time comes, just not yet, thank goodness!
But definitely it's gonna be a year we won't ever forget for many different reasons. Musically I feel they're at their peak and will keep getting better and better regardless of when and how they'll be releasing music. For the moment we'll have this album, which will be amazing, no doubts about it. I'm so proud of Bangtan. I wish I could protect them

Please don't watch the color coded lyrics videos to this song, most of them have many errors because in Black Swan there's a lot of auto tune effect and the members' voices are layered so it's better to wait to 28 January. BTS performs "Black Swan" live at the late night show with James Corden, it's better to see the line distribution during that show.

Dude, watching you go through that emotional journey was like re-living it over again... I'm amazed by how in the comment section of the main video and every reaction I have seen so far, it is essentially just people from all walks of life uniting to say 'THIS is true art, and it has touched my soul in a way nothing else has.' This dance and both versions of the song with those lyrics just embody something that we can all recognize - especially so for creatives. I have seen so many people recounting the stories of their 'first deaths' or how they came back from it, and some people who have been tirelessly searching to find 'their thang'... I fully agree with you, I think this album will be a landmark of the music industry. It is already so powerful, and we have only seen two songs. Thank you for your reaction, I think a lot of people were just in awe for a few minutes - I know I was. Peace

I agree with your interpretation of the song. BTS' message through the song. The message of BTS' song and the message of this particular Art Film is separate I think.
In my opinion this particular Art Film implies the death of a Dancers career and how that feels. The first death. No matter how hard you try you can't escape that physical limitation. He is trying to fly but the shadows are holding him down. Notice how the camera pans up when he is flapping his wings but he doesn't ascend any higher. And since it's an Art 'Film' the camera's direction also tells a story.

This whole comeback is more like an artistic movement rather than your standard comeback. You are so right about it being a masterpiece! I also agree with your assessment of the shadows, and at the end, once he embraced them, they helped him fly. Just amazing.
Just for the record, there is a whole group of people EVERY comeback who "Like old BTS better" or "Don't like the direction they're going in." EVERY time. It's just like antis and haters who pull out the SAME bullshit tricks and insults every comeback. The negativity never changes, while we (BTS and ARMY) are always moving forward. I don't think I've ever been a fan of a group that was so constantly striving to do something different than what they did before. That's part of the reason I hate having them pigeonholed as "Kpop" which most of which sounds more or less the same to my ears.
I always look forward to your reactions! See you when Ego drops on February 3! I would love to hear your thoughts on the difference between this version and the radio version!
