    Very nice video, but somewhat misleading. If you're a beginner, be advised there's an AWFUL lot of things left out that absolutely MUST be addressed before you can just go "rip it around". Things like receivers, radios, radio and switch programming, Betaflight config, BL Heli config, PID tuning, Lipo batteries, the list could go on. Each one of these topics entails tons of information that you can't just skip. Don't think you can just follow along with this video, then run out this afternoon and fly. It ain't happening.

    • @ArtemisKitty
      @ArtemisKitty 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I used to fly RC helis myself, both gas and elec. and from my comparison? Drones are a lot easier to fly but much touchier/more technical to tune initially. I mean think about it - when was the last time you could build a heli and pick and choose what frame, props, motor, etc you use from a HUGE list like there are for drones and be confident they'd work together on any size or shape frame? 1 Prop? 2? 8? It can compensate... once taught to, lol. It's gotten easier but still a lot harder than tuning a heli for toilet bowl correction and drift. Once you DO though? Incredible. And intense. Take, say, your favorite technical-stunt 6-channel FPV video from when someone was showing off at an airshow and running tight close-room maneuvers and watch it in 5x speed, and then say "Can I react fast enough to control it at this speed?". The video at the end is actually a really good example. It's not sped up. They really ARE flying that fast, heh.
      This video is an excellent one for people who are already somewhat into the drone hobby and have toyed around with some cheaper commercial ones but are ready to move to the big league, but are being held back by what used to be a very prohibitive cost. As far as a "first pro-level one you build when you're ready for them" video? This is excellent. :-)

    If your building this drone, a tip is that the VTX in the pro version requires a 7-24V input and when built in the video, stew only uses a 5V. When I built the drone, I found that the 5V input was not enough to supply the VTX so instead attached it to one of the esc power supplies. This worked for me as now the VTX gets around 15V.

    I like how this video shows that you don't need expensive things to be able to do a hobby and race other people also I like how this video teaches you on how to build your very own racing drone on a budget build for if you are new to the hobby and don't want to spend much in case you brake the drone or you don't have much money. Also building your drone is much better than buying it complete because you will have less fear of braking it and having to repair it and look for parts with a pre built one but if you built it you would know what part goes where and where to find a replacement and maybe even an upgrade to some parts.This gives coincidence in flying your drone when you build it. This is why you should follow the video if you want to start flying drones or just want a drone that can take a couple of crashes when practicing. I have wanted to fly racing drones but have not had the money to get one but this video is a great tutorial on how to build on on a budget. Love the video keep it up

    There are 2 things I LOVED about the video:
    1) You have the perfect balance between being in depth and keeping it brief. You went from each step in a matter of seconds while providing alot of info.
    2) The music from the flight video was the same as from the first $99 build. This was pretty cool as it stood for both the progression of the hobby (cost of build vs. what it's worth) and your progression as a channel and pilot
    Happy Flying

    Stu, what i love about this video is your attitude in making videos soo exciting for beginners and getting them into the hobby as cheaply and easily as possible. Even beginners that have never touched a drone can understand you. The way you keep away from all the very technical stuff and just educate them on what matters makes the video interesting for those that may be intimidated by all the electronic knowledge involved. THUMBS UP to you stew for making the hobby so attractive to beginners and getting more people into this exciting hobby! 👍

    I just finished building your older version quad, and then you upload this!!! xD
    What I like about both of these build videos is that you link lots of extra components, and the designs are very modular. Since I decided to get my quad in the air first, and then install the FPV equipment, it's easy for me to upgrade bits of the old drone with some of the newer equipment you have linked in this guide!
    One thing I would criticize about this guide is that you kind of gloss over the whole process of setting up the receiver and flashing firmware in Cleanflight/Betaflight. I used an F400 Spektrum FC (that board gave me a lot of headaches) and a 4648 receiver, but for some reason they did not want to talk to each other. Finally some people on your Discord server suggested I swap from RX3 to one of the other RX's, and it actually worked!

    • @crazy22200
      @crazy22200 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One thing to keep in mind is that there are several different types of receivers and everyone uses something different. Can't cover everything and I think it makes sense to leave that part out, leaving that content for a more specific video about setting a new quad up with that particular equipment.
      I will say this, when I built the original $99 build, I had a really hard time getting it to arm the first time and getting it to recognize my transmitter at all. Just getting into the hobby, I was getting really frustrated. This wasn't a fault of the build or anything, but moreso Cleanflight. I finally ended up flashing to a different firmware version and it 'magically' started to work. This was prior to the Discord, of course, so it's awesome that you were able to get on there and get it figured out with others in the community.

    • @akihitolucilius2881
      @akihitolucilius2881 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha interesting Cleanflight was the only software that had supported firmware for my board! I have a quote from Betaflight developer: "Sorry to hear. The F400 is only borderline supported, as it's an 'out there' design, and none of the core developers has got one. Not sure if there's much we can do"

    • @nuggetthewifiwarrior3694

      I just bought the Radio and the FPV headset and saved the drone parts till last. Apart from that though, I agree with the extra parts that are provided because always just for a little more it can make a big difference!
      I hope your build does get some great use and that the newer parts work perfectly with it too!!!!

      I believe the best way to start is by buying a radio and a simulator (I play Liftoff) to practice basic maneuvers. Apart form learning how to control your drone, you get a feel for your radio. Later, if you really want to get up in the air, you can build a quad and start practicing flying line of sight and doing some tricks. If you can wait, I would get the googles first and continue flying simulators.
      By the time you actually get to build a quad, you will be able to fly without crushing as much, which means more cash for LiPos instead of repairs and downtime. :)

      The difference in raw speed it probably pretty minimal, and if you're new to the sport you likely won't be able to notice much of a difference for a while. The biggest upgrades are to the ESCs and the F4 flight controller. These upgrades will improve stability. The camera is a good upgrade too. Being able to see well is such a huge improvement. I had no idea how well I could actually fly until I got a camera that let me see well (wide lens-- 2.1-2.3mm) and wide dynamic range. A good VTX also makes a difference!

I was chasing ducks out of my pool (the duck toilet) night fliying using LEDs for orientation, followed the ducks over the trees in my back paddock about 60m above ground, when everything went black, no light no sound no engine noise, and heard it crashing down in to the creek. ApexGaming I totally agree! I feel the RC hobby in general is filled with great people that are more than willing to help out a newbie, and videos like this really highlight that fact! The most daunting part of this facet of the hobby, is wading through all the crap, to find decent components at a cheap price. Stu has linked some really awesome components, a lot of which I have used on my own builds, that are really worth a look... Are they the best? No... But are they reliable? You bet! And at a fraction of the price.
      Love your work Stu! You are a true ambassador of the hobby!

      yeah but now i feel self conscious about replying to somebody looking for info in comments, i think it was painless360 who mentioned in a video that other people in comments should answer as many noob questions as they could because obviously theres a limit to how many times he can answer '' what is ibus?''.. so this way everybody hands down the knowledge and we get a bigger community, and cheaper products.

      I'd strongly recommend getting a toothpick like the tinyhawk freestyle and then building a 5 inch once you're comfortable. In fact really what I'd recommend is start on the sim, then get a tinywhoop, then toothpick, then full size quad. You'll save a lot of money and frustration

    This frame is an absolute boss! First build and have been crashing the heck out of it even into concrete. Busted motors left and right and the frame is just fraying a little at the ends. Some liquid electrical tape sorted that out and back in the air again and again!

      I think Stu likes to do these "basic" build videos then review the better components and you can put them together by following these steps. Not a lot changes from one build to the next.

      Which ever one you build will be just fine. The main thing is getting yourself flying and getting some stick time. Also worth looking at a sim. FPV Air 2 is cheap and works great, I think you can even use an xbox controller to control the quads. This means that you can start getting some stick time with very little outlay. Happy flying!

      Adam, be aware - he didn't say, but you have to solder all 4 motor cables not as he showed. You may notice, he didn't say but he really did all correct - two motors solder one-by-one cable connection, by two others motors cable solder in other order - you have to swap order of cables. Watch how they are soldered in video - he did all correct, but forgot to say :)))
