We did a First Ride Review of the New 2023 SurRon Ultra Bee here: • NEW 2023 Surron ULTRA ...
I did 3 full battery range tests in this video, running the bike from 100% to 10%, in sport mode, at both a motocross track and offroad singletrack. My 3rd test was on a flat dirt road, in eco mode, going approximately 30-35mph.
The battery on the Surron Ultra Bee is a removable 74 volt, 55 Ah battery, totaling a capacity of just over 4 kWh.The bike is putting out 12.5kW of peak power in sport mode, which is the power mode we selected for the off road segments of this test. The rider in this video weighs roughly 165 to 170 pounds with gear on.

Range is about what I expected. This would give plenty of range for my use case (family forest service road rides or slow, technical single track rides). More range than my Surron Light Bee and likely much more comfortable. The Light Bee's poor suspension and cramped cockpit have me ready to get off of it by the time the battery is dead on those slow, technical single track days. That is even with taller/larger seat, 21" front wheel/tire, 3/4" rear link, good foot pegs and lots of other mods (no battery or controller mods, though). Just wasn't worth throwing money into suspension on the light bee chassis. So now trying to decide if I just wait for my Varg, or also replace the Light Bee with an Ultra Bee. Still have ICE bikes and ATVs to ride, too, so might not be worth it. But sure like the forks, brakes, larger cockpit and greater of the Ultra Bee.
Regarding the chassis geometry, sounds to me like it was designed for a 21" from wheel/tire, but then they put a 19" on it at the last minute. Not sure why else it would be sitting in such a stinkbug stance and turn so sharp. That might work out great, however, since it sounds like the geometry will be perfect with 21" on the front. But, it's silly expensive to get a hub laced up, so Surron should just offer the 21" front from the factory.
According to the data you provide, at no time would it be even close to reaching 87 miles, which are what the manufacturer promotes to us.
@@Alansweet Gravel has a lot of rolling resistance. Speed, even 10mph, has a huge impact. The 87 mile range is based on 25mph and likely done on a indoor test dyno. Riding on level smooth asphalt at a stedy 25mph would probably get much closer to the 87 mile range than 35mph on gravel.
The Ultra Bee has about twice the battery capacity as the surron light bee but the Ultra is heavier, so the above results seem about right since they are roughly twice those of a light bee in similar conditions.
The Eco mode was surprising to be honest 46 miles at 30-35 mph is really not that bad at all, looks like you would get a lot more if you were going even slower and exploring. nice 🤙🏼
💯🫡
Thats my favorite thing to do, just cruise around and explore with a couple of fast punches
Ez 55 miles at 20-25mph
except that surron says it should go to 87 miles max range.... where do they even get that number from??
@@jessielees exactly lol its a very nasty lie
Considering going from 4-stroke dirt bikes to an Ultra Bee and your videos have been SUPER informative and helpful. Thanks @ElectricCycleRider!
That is pretty good range. Compared to my 2017 freeride, I got only 9 to 12 miles out of it.
@Joey Santos For sure. I had the 2017 Freeride some years back and you can expect to get at least twice the range with the Ultra Bee.
@@LuckyPause3d I have a 2020 freeride. Until the stark its probably the best bike on the market. Blows the surron out of the water in every aspect. So fun.
@@LuckyPause3di raced yesterday in winter enduro sprint ! Mode 2 , total 27km! Video is on my channel!
A new freeride for 7.5k would be pretty good! They have a higher capacity battery than my old one did and you can expect about 20 miles out of one. If you could live with that it's a pretty fun bike, a bit on the heavy side though
seems like the perfect Power to weight to range ratio! Imagine what it will be like when they come out with upgrades for this bad boy!
Imagine when we get new battery tech.
I mean it already exists... but 4x the range is easily doable even now, but expensive.
@@awemowe2830 sorry I don’t know much about this stuff, but how would one get 4x range currently for this bike?
@@saberterminal871 Well one thing is the new sodium batteries being developed in China, or the Solid State batteries that Toyota have developed. Lithium is going to be going away within the next 5-10 years.
Don't know of anything you could buy currently to get 4 x range. Between 40 and 50 miles from the latest bigger battery available for the Ultra is pretty nice though.
Most of the trail loops in Michigan are in the 20 mile range, so knowing you could get close to that if not farther is great to know!
After weighing all options and price points, I’m getting one of these for sure, thank you for your videos, very helpful.
When are you ordering…
Those numbers sound pretty reasonable, especially considering a battery change is simple. 26 miles of woods riding is a lot for most riders not counting racers. Might want to take a break at that point. Price seems fair to be truthful. Might have to go see one.
@CncObsession Agreed!
Great job on the video Tucker! Thanks for making it.
@Hobbies4Hire Thanks!
Time seems like a better metric for range on bikes like this. Like can I have 90 mins of hard riding on a track and 2 hours trail riding?
THANK YOU!!! I was thinking exactly this. But these lot don’t get it.
I am 5’10 205lbs and I plan on using this set up as a commute style bike do you believe that this bike can work for me in an urban style environment I have convinced myself that the ultra bee is a better value and more future proof than LBX
I'm on my second moto-trials to electric trials bike conversion. Your range numbers (for 4kwh) are quite close to what I've calculated, based on fuel consumption figures of my 4-Stroke Honda Montesa trials motorcycle., assuming its specific fuel consumption is 0.5 lb/hp-hour, and at 750 watts per horsepower. One other critical variable in range is tire pressure, and on a gas bike the best fuel economy (or range) is in the highest gear. My first e-bike conversion used a 5-speed gearbox with a clutch, as is the current one. I like having a range of gears, even on an e-bike.
I have the Ultra bee. I'm 240 lb and if I ride the bike kinda hard in the mountains I get between 30 and 36 Miles. 18/21 wheels
What has more range this or the ktm freeride exc?
Solid results for a stock battery ! Can we imagine some aftermarket battery for this ultra bee with more V/AH with the space there is now ?
i hope this bike will have a nice 21/18 wheel set next time hehe, can't wait to see it with !
and 58T sprocket
I know it sounds backwards but also try increasing rebound on the forks to see if it helps with the twitchy/nervous front end.
Another awesome video. I’d be interested to know the ride time you got in each terrain.
Sounds like about 1.5 hrs on eco flat dirt.
@eblank8 Thanks! Yeah, roughly 1.5 hours on the dirt road in eco and roughly 1 hour on both singletrack and MX in sport mode.
Imagine enjoying this range for 5-10 years and swapping out a new battery and controller for MAYBE 2k all in that could increase range and power significantly all while burning zero gas and making no noise. We are still in the revolution of electric battery vehicles.
Great video as always! Thank you for making a very honest range report. I was thinking this bike. Should get about an hour of ride time on the trails… looks like that’s about accurate.
Another great review Tucker. The range is about what I expected and is in line with what I get with my Alta MXR. I have an order in on an Ultra Bee, can't wait to see what that sub 200 lb e-dirt bike is like on my local single track. I'm thinking its going to be a hoot since my Alta is fantastic, but losing 65+ lbs compared to the Alta, its gotta be at least, if not more, fun.
Can you do a range comparison with the 18/21s
Thanks for testing this out, it's really useful to see the comparison between moto, trail and flat riding.
Really useful information Tucker for those looking at this bike. Nice job.
DO a KTM Freeride vs Ultra Bee Video! Please.
Great video! Can I make a small suggestion? Forgive me if you did post this info and I just missed it, but could you also include the duration of the rides? I think thet's very important and more easily relatable to someone looking to buy one of these. If I do the math and approximate that your average speed on the moto track was @ 2x your distance (19 miles x 238 mph), that leads me to beliee that you rode on the track for @30 minutes. Is that about right?
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing, how long was each ride? Like can I rip single track at the same level he was for an hour? More or less? Would be more interested in that than how many miles. Hook us up with an answer lol
Dude thank you for dropping a full link in the description of your short.
Kind of surprised. Maybe it would go farther on the road? I can go 30 miles on the Light Bee going up to 45 mph. The battery on the Ultra Bee has more than twice the capacity, so I would have assumed 60 mile range on the road. I assume weight doesn't matter nearly as much as aerodynamics.
Finally, a light bike with a good battery range for an electric. I would love to see economy mode on single/2 track for range. I usually just ride with my wife anymore, and we just have fun. I'm looking at replacing our ice bikes one day. She is short, though, so trying to find a bike that fits her and still have the range is tough. Thanks for all the testing and videos!
Would a 21in front wheel help to fix the twitchy steering as well?
Very excited to get out shipment in soon! Was out on one of our Storm Bees yesterday when you launched the video so naturally, we watched it on the side of a hill with the bikes parked.
Great video! Can you tell us what your elapsed time was in each event? That would be really helpful. Thanks
Scroll up like 4-5 comments. ECR replied to the same question
@@theshreditor625 thanks, I can't find their reply but I'll check back another day
Just bought one. Picking it up today. 🤠
Thanks for your video, it helped me make a decision!
Do you know if this bike will be upgradeable like battery and stuff or will it be locked down like the storm bee ?
Wow, you can instantly tell you’re a motto cross rider after the first couple of jumps. Pretty smooth.
What was the temperature roughly?
@routybouty Roughly 65 degrees fahrenheit
I agree with most of the other commentors here. Range and overall performance results of the Ultra Bee are very good.
More fun to ride: 72V Light Bee X or Ultra Bee?
Great testing! I would love to know the time driven for each test. I didnt hear average speeds for MX track and Single track test to allow calculation from range to time. I guess the eco mode test was around 85 minutes or so. I was honestly hoping that Single track test to be closer to a 2hr ride time. Probably gotta own two batteries to have proper riding day fun of 2-3 hrs.
Oh gosh one battery is way over $3k USD, no way I can have a second one. Maybe another couple yrs can bring those batteries down in price enough. $9 or $10k CAD for bike + two batteries seems ok to me. If the battery drops to $3k CAD then maybe the bike will be $7k CAD w/ one batt, so $10k CAD to have 2 batt. Sorry to switch to CAD... The bike is currently over $8k CAD
Great video. How does range compare to a stock lite bee x on the same terrain?
Stock light bee X is at most half of this on singletrack and MX, but probably 70% of this on flat ground.
Yes I agree, I am thinking of getting a ultra bee, I am also wondering the same thing.
do you feel like the stock suspension is somewhat adequate to ride it decently hard?
Hi,does the engine load the battery ?
Could you tell me is the primary drive still belt driven as on the lightbee? Thanks.
@Patrick Cox Yes, the primary drive is belt driven.
Almost wet myself laughing when the rear shock preload adjustment was mentioned ; my 2023 KTM 125sx needed the same approach for the same issue .
My just ordered Ultra bee will get a 21inch front but not an 18inch rear cause that may make more sense .
Sorta can't wait to compare this to the RM125 1982 I've just spent idiotic money on readying for VMX ...
Yup , you guessed it , same rider weight .
we pretty much plateau on range, still not enough for my liking (i get frustrated on the light bee), we are yet to really get a game changer but it is improving surely
In that 26.2 miles on the single track scenario, how much seat time do you think you roughly got? I’m more used to hours on a bike vs. miles.
About an hour
@@slick4415 I would say it is more close to 2hours
Whose riding 26mph average on single track?
I think it is as expected. In the real world, with regen, it could probably do ~60-70 miles in a city environment (they are road-legal in EU).
I wonder how does Ultra Bee compare to Storm Bee in your opinion? Which one would you get if it was your money?
Is that still with stock gearing? And there is a power mode between sport and eco correct, daily?
How will it do after 6 mo. & 1 year on that battery?
You are making me miss riding at PPMX, Tucker! Looks pretty fun on that bike
Do they make replacement batteries couldn't finf one under 3k is that correct
Still ain't clear if it would have enough juice for a 1 hour full power cross coutry race. Including some mud or more moist dirt. What are your thoughts?
Great video, thanks for sharing.
When will u restock?
What is the top speed of the ultra bee
How long does the 19 miles equal in minutes of riding on the MX track?
Should I get the ultra bee or storm bee?
do u think these 19 inch wheels on the ultra bee can hold up on the beachy sands of Jupitar fl? sadly the X cant ;(
Exactly what I expected. Less than I hoped for.
Awesome info. There's not much magic in range. Designing a bigger battery and it's just going to get heavier.
Are you running the stock tires?
Was it cool enough to affect range?
Nice work!
What’s this range translated to time ? How much time of fun?
I guess about an hour?
Curious what the range of a mix of Daily and Sport mode would be. Tucker’s reviews are great but I am older and do not ride to his level, but do enjoy a good fun off-road pace!!
Is Daily mode really usable for semi aggressive riding on moderate trails??
Same question and same thought here. The middle mode of Daily is probably going to be the ticket for most trail riding and singletrack, flip to sport when needed or for hills.
Ya I’d love to see explanation on this. Is daily have enough power to ride at a semi-aggressive style? Or is the acceleration suspended too much?
Can you charge the battery outside of the bike?
Great video. Any comments you can make comparing ultra bee to freeride?
Please do the USA storm bee as well. Thanks
Would love to see a comparison between a 250f and this. 250f more power and range, Sur Ron has more torque and response. Would be great to hear your thoughts riding both back to back.
Impressive range! Intresting suspension setup. Sounds like the lower rear sag slackens it out a bit
are those stock tires?
Im curious how it scrubs on a double
I was hoping for more single-track range, but sounds like you can limp home at around 30 miles.
Also there's a mode between sport and eco, daily. That may fit well with most technical singletrack and make for longer range.
Unless you have any type of mild hills on your trails, then your range will REALLY fall.
Mate, can u make a ranking for the best bike overall?
Also which model of Ultra Bee is this Trail or OffRoad?
How fast does it charge?
Old pro says; Taller handlebars should be used to move the rider weight back and improve stability.
Range numbers give zero surprise. My big question is how durable this jackshaft will be. The lightbee jack-shaft/swingarm pivot is total shit.
Hey dude, how are you!
Preload should never be used to adjust sag! Thats the coil's job! Preload and rebound should be all the way off to set sag, Then add rebound untill confortable, then set preload!
The Sur Ron x is still my dream bike lol but this thing is pretty sweet not too bad on the range man and very quiet 👍
This will be the best bike for my gf following her first bike, a crf125fb.
Nice! How long is the wait to get one?
@Cyumadbro summit They should be available for purchase in the US within the next couple of months.
What helmet are you wearing? Thanks in advance
I can’t believe they advertise 87miles. I’m stoked to see the comparisons between this and your built out Surron and Talaria… Great channel! - also.. that single track wasn’t very tight/technical… probably see range increase a bit in tighter stuff
The 87 miles are on flat ground at a constant 15mph pace. Use your head.
These bikes seem awesome, but the range just isn’t there yet. I get similar range out of my electric mountain bike, but by then you’re exhausted and ready to end the ride anyway.
Thank you.
What a lovely track
Man you should really ride and test the storm bee
Can anyone give me a idea of how my weight will play a factor in range I'm about 6,1 260lb I am going to upgrade the rear shock when it arrives
PLEASE think of the people using proper measurements (not freedom units) when making these, really annoying if thousands of viewers each need to convert them, if it would have taken you 30 seconds once while recording... - Having said that: Thanks for taking them time to make these, some of the best Ultra Bee content out there!
How long does it take to charge?
4 hours
You really like listening to yourself
Do a sting r mx4 review on the the tracks testing it the same please. They are known to have a better battery then suron. They also have a better motor.
Would like to see a 6’ 200+ lb man ride one of these around and see how it performs. 150lbs soaking wet doesn’t give most of us a good idea of what this thing will actually do.
I know they're 2 totally different beasts but I can't decide whether to get this or wait for the Stark. Any advice? Thanks. (fyi I own a LBX)
Sell the LBX, get in line for an Ultra Bee, ride the Ultra Bee for as long as you want, then sell that and get a varg. :D
@@hobsonmx7341 Sort of what I'm doing. Ordered an Ultra Bee, keeping my Alta, will likely sell the Alta at some point before my Stark Varg arrives. Will decide which to keep after riding them, the Varg or the Ultra Bee. May keep both depending. Can't wait to get both the Ultra Bee and the Varg. I'll be broke but who cares, Lol.
@eddieb3915 Heck yeah. I'm happy for you. I'm trying to get my hands on an Ultra Bee to make some parts for, but can't seem to get my hands on one down in California.
You guys should redo this video but just with the couple modifications that every person who buys these does (sprocket, x ring or roller chain, and 18/21 wheels/tires). I don't think anyone who takes these off road keeps the stock wheels, chain, and sprocket.
Hi, thanks for the vid! 26miles for "enduro" in flat land is kinda disappointing I believe, and 1 hour for me is too short, I'm used to go for MTB 2 to 4 hours , I was torn between this and eMTB but with this duration I guess it is not for me, Maybe a combo eco + sport for mountain exploring might do the trick.
I feel he was giving er on this single track the whole time. With a mixed ride of aggressive and cruising speed I’m sure the ride time is 2 hours plus
Milage indications are great info there Tucker.
I guess that would fall for a heavier rider of say 220 Lbs. (100 kg.)
How long did it take to recharge and did you use 110 volt or a 220 volt charge input?
Thank you for very good video. Acc.to a dealer's website the max range should be nearly double. Perhaps without the rider... It's good to know the truth, although I wish it was slightly more optimistic. Still, it seems like a very good option - lot of fun and one can ride in a forest without disturbing animals and people. Is it an issue to switch between rear brake in e-bike and clutch in combustion engine bike?
I am getting very comparable range on my KTM Freeride EXC. But I imagine the Ultra Bee weighs in a lot less.
It seems so. 85kg
You need at least 10 kilowatts hours capacity for 100 km range in off-road
Excellent real world test. Thank you. Your single track ride appears much faster than we ride. If you get the opportunity to ride some tight, nasty root and mud sections, then I would like to see those numbers. Avg speed for us is about 12 mph, avg length of ride 40 miles
Greetings ! I would like to see a review and review of the Talaria 27.5" Factory Fork Upgrade 🤗
🤔 I'm 205 nekked, I guess I better wear my hiking boots instead of my riding boots in Colorado
To me, the "single track" test in this video is not really representative of actual single track. It was basically a thinner motocross track.
soo....
Why does the manufacturer say that it can travel 140 km of battery autonomy?
