Bro, I get you won't read this but maybe someone else will. I am 57. Live in Michigan. Been fishing "snot" tube baits since I was 23. So, 34 years. I regularly catch bass that I have described in many a bar over many a year, that you can make a fist, shove it into the bass face and not touch a bass. Huge bass hit the "snot". Love ya'll bro long time subscriber.
I am no stranger to fishing as I have a 16.5 Lb Walleye on the wall, a 7lb. large mouth, caught numerous crappies up to 3 lbs and some great small mouth. However I did most of this as a younger boy and man growing up on a resort in Northwest Wisconsin. We fished lakes under 1,000 acres and believe me they were no Walleye fish factories like I see on the videos. Oh, also took a few years out to become addicted to Muskie Fishing and managed to get at least one Musky per outing. This was in the days when We did not use bait casters and 8lb test line was standard along with 11g floating Rapalas. I guess you figured out I am pretty much out of date. I got away from fishing when I bought a hobby farm and started managing Whitetails. Now I have no more room for Mounts and with all the new electronics am starting all over and it is like being on another planet. Your style of teaching an advice has been my real go to. Next to swim jig fishing, tube fishing is my favorite lure. I have an entire tackle bag filled with all types and sizes and brands of tubes. I use them year round and they don’t disappoint.
Good video. Tubes are crazy versatile. I'm still fishing them like Guido and like Shaw G. I also love fishing them on a mushroom head cause you can feel the bottom better than a hidden head. It's good on a football head too. Smoke is my favorite color, I don't care what color the flake is. I'm an old guy and I fish in the tradition of Billy Westmoreland, Charlie Brewer, and other Tennessee fishermen and guys around Kentucky and in the Ozarks. Cracking a tube is gonna be something I try. Great video.
Love to watch all the videos by Tactical Bassin ! Very informative! I watch a lot of the videos from the pros but Matt Allen is simply the most informative and "Best Teacher" on TH-cam period! Keep up the good work Matt and Tim!
Being born and raised on a small mouth reservoir, we fished the heck out of tubes. It has always blown me away how no one seems to use them. The amount of tubes that I have is nearly sickening
I have been a subscriber for probably since the beginning of tactical bassin. In my opinion you guys are by far the best teachers. I am no stranger to bass fishing been doing it since a little boy I'm 46 years old now. I appreciate all the little techniques that you guys teach. although I do spend a little bit too much money watching your videos. LOL
Got something for you to try. I put a shakey head in my tube. Maybe called a rattle jig. Significant difference in the amount of strikes from just a standard tube head. Ive done the comparison side by side with both styles. It really does work.
I have to thank you for this video Matt. Every time I am preparing for a fishing trip I lay out several tubes and they never make the cut. I always opt for something else even though I know tubes catch fish. After watching this video there will be a selection of tubes in my bag every time I go out. Love the content sir and you definitely have helped me catch more fish.
I really like Tokyo rigs for tubes, adjusting arm lengths changes up not only the action, but also allows for shaking on the bottom at different heights depending on the arm lengths. Rock bass, crappie, and panfish also have an affinity for smaller tubes.
Picked up three bass on beds last weekend doing this exact thing during a tournament. My friend's boat so all three fish he got five minutes of first chance and could not get them to bite with a jig, texas creature, and drop shot Moxie tail (in that order). All three times I came behind him (after saying "tune in Tokyo") with a creature bait on tokyo (green pumpkin with either purple or red flakes for bluegill) and within three casts for all three they bit and were caught. I honestly believe it is because my bait was suspended 2" off bottom and could jiggle on a 1/2 ounce sinker without moving. My buddy could not do that with the jig or texas rig and his drop shot was too high and too small to be a threat. Will be throwing more often for bass on beds. Cannot wait to try the berkeley gilly or the bellows gill on the tokyo
As a crappie fisherman tubes and jigs are all we use, and I'll be honest I'm super glad he hasn't figured how to really use them yet. A soft jig can catch absolutely anything.
You’re right, one of the best baits made. Aaron martins turned me on to these. He told me to flip them in the delta. Now no matter which body of water I go to , I have one tied on. Thank you
Order submitted! I've been looking for a medium size tube. Something bigger than a typical crappie tube but not as large as the standard 4" bass tube. This looks perfect.
i just picked up two twin power 3000s today, they only had two left of last years model left, so i bought both of them., i know that they changed the gearing, but playing with both the new and last years model, i couldn't feel the difference and they were discounted to the point where i felt comfortable...they are not stellas, but for $500 less per reel, i'm ok with that! 🙂
Absolute MUST for river smallies. Work great in current or transition zones between faster/shallower water and deeper water in rivers. Add a small corkie behind the jig head for a little extra buoyancy and slower sink. Let it hit that faster water above a deeper hole and get pulled into the deeper hole naturally by the force of the current. Can't tell you how many fish I've nailed right at the cusp of that deeper hole. They're just sitting there waiting for the current to bring them baitfish or crawdads.
You mentioned sand colored tubes, I like pumpkin as well. A lot of lakes here not only have gobies, but also are infested with rusty crayfish. When the Smallies aren't munching on one, they are crushing the other and the pumpkin colored tubes are a better match for the craws.
Really appreciate you enjoy quality products but very happy you continue to give options. Us seniors that didn't start fishing till late in life have to stay in budget. Thanks again for the content
All I have to say is thank you for going over tips for the entire country you do a great job at helping the Michigan anglers like me where a lot of my lakes have 15 foot visibility, the fish can get so lethargic it isn’t even funny
The "death spiral" is effective because it imitates a crawdad scooting down to the bottom. Crawdads rarely just fall slowly to the bottom from aquatic foliage. As they "crawfish" to the bottom, flapping their tail, they don't go in a straight line, they spiral to the bottom. Hence the effectiveness on the drop or within seconds of hitting the bottom just on the edge of a weed bed. I know this because I've been (as well as an avid fisherman) a snorkeler my entire life and I love feeding bass crawdads!
Raised on flippin’ gitzits (tubes) when I lived in New York. Bobby Garland was the master. He sold his company to Bobby Uhrig, and I fished with him on the BASSMASTER trails in the mid 90’s to the early 2000’s. I had the best education on these baits… I now live in South East TX, and still fish the tube… It’s a killer bait down here!
Thanks for the information on tubes. I have a "chest"for you to make your tube more affective. The cheat is to use packing peanut in the tube and it will stand on end and drop slower
Always love the videos, this one in particular. I have packages of tubes but didn't know how to rig them. I'm looking forward to throwing something different and see how it goes.
Matt, a flipping tube made national recognition when Denny Brauer won the 1998 Bassmasters Classic at High Rock Lake flipping a Strike King Flipping Tube.
I was introduced to the BPS Tender Tubes many many moons ago and it became my go-to finesse on Lake Champlain (and all the northern NY lakes and rivers)... can't tell you how many smallies I've caught on tubes. My PB smallmouth was on the green pumpkin/black pepper Tender Tube. Great lure for sure!
Thanks for the content!! The ponds I fish are currently full of slimy weeds. I Carolina rig the tubes and stuff them with foam earplugs to let them slowly rise.
Something to think about, Zman has a tube in their Ned lineup, I would imagine that cracking on of those tubes around finicky fish would absolutely get bit. My first Ned fishing was done with their ( Zman) tube and although I wasn’t cracking it I was getting bites when even my super finesse jigs and Neko rugged worms wouldn’t get bit.
Appreciate the video brother. Going to try the Goby head on Lake Erie east 55th break wall. When I'm sight fishing I always have another pole rigged with a wacky rig 5-in senko (either green pumpkin or purple with silver flakes). If I start to see a fish swimming on top along the shore I will grab my pole with the Senko I'll lead it by 3 to 6 ft.
Hey hey I started to steer away from my choice of tubes I throw religiously but you have now confirmed for me to keep those in my rotation for bass thanks man👊
Loving all the videos Would love to see two things for the coming videos. First would love to here what you guys would use say in the Dakotas for smallies Second maybe a macro camera shot of when you load a tube with the hook/ weight as some of us are newbies when it comes to even the simple things. Just food for thought. Thanks for listening to me if you got this far in my rambling.😊
A tube is the GOAT. So many ways to rig and fish it. Catches every species that swims in every season. I’ve caught hundreds of muskies on em. Matt, you better get some. You are not catching half the fish you could on the rivers. Tora tube. Too bad you can’t get my homemade Owner 5319 heads that won’ bend like the tora Gamakatsu heads. They still work though. The only colors you need are green pumpkin and black. Seriously, get some asap!!!!
Being from west Michigan a tube is definitely a staple to most. Ive watched one of my best friends flip a tube in heavy cover and smoke more fish than anyone around, or in the boat lol It definitely works!!!! I also suggest trying out Snack Daddy lures tubes. Great stuff!!!
I mean, the man loves fishing, he talked about tubes for 30mins straight and didnt blink... and damn cuz... i must love it too watched the whole thing lol.
I like the bps double dip tubes with the eagle claw 1/8 oz tube jig hook i get a slower fall which helps me fish over the tops of weeds and i can cast a long distance during windy conditions
I had no idea tubes were a thing of the past, probably a top 3 plastic option for me tbh. In fact, the first absolutely nut balls smash fest I ever experienced as an angler was pitching tubes to spawners in Norther Wisconsin on Upper Eau Claire lake...we're talking every cast kinda deal! That sealed it for me and I've fished them ever since
As a guy who fishes Smallmouth on Grand Traverse Bay in Michigan and lives on the bay. The smokey purples with any type of copper or purple fleck with destroy the smallies. Not sparkle or tiny color variants, but nice giant flecks in each tube. Thank me later
I live in Woodstock Ontario, I have been killing small and Large mouth with tiny Berkley Atomic Tubes, I use white, I bought them for panfish, I can’t keep bass off them.
Matt, I've been looking for a good hook for fishing wood cover with a 4 inch tournament tube. Been missing lots of bites in 1 to 3 ft. Of water. I've tried medium heavy to heavy action rods with various lines from 10 to 20 lb test. Using 1/8 to 1/4 oz slip sinkers with a bobber stopper. I'm totally lost and would appreciate any suggestions you may have.
I sometimes put an ear plug inside and Carolina rig it the natural swimming/ darting action is insane. Y’all ever fish the glide jig by vmc? Ur thoughts…possibly a video on it?
Your info is nice. We have cannels and river here on the Eastern Sierra. Sometimes it is not easy to apply your teaching. Might you do a video specifically addressing our type of environment?
Love the finesse tubes. I've been putting them on a ned head, and adding silicone skirts for an ultra finesse tube jig. (The Nube) Got a short on my page of it.
these fat (large) tubes you are using are the same sized ones I use for catfishing....myself, I clean out a used chauking tube, fill it with a thinned out catfish (stinkbait) bait (use the chaulking gun) and fish the bottom of lakes and rivers.....tip on filling the tube, put a small hole at top of tube so there is no back pressure when filling with the bait...bait lasts longer in the tube, sitting in water the smell permeats the area and the little fish cannot knock the bait off the hook...tight lines everyone....
I live in Michigan I fish StClair and a tube has been the most consistent way to get bites for smallmouths As much as I like a swim bait and a ned rig nothing catches them like a tube
@@tims_always_fishing7117 I live by metro airport I fish the Detroit River Lake Erie and Lake St Clair mainly. I fished LSC yesterday caught some nice smallmouths
I’m in NE I use them for crappie on a bobber the small ones . I’ve caught plenty of big largemouth on them too fishing for crappie. I havnt tried them for bass tho at least not the bigger tubes.
I don't over look it i use it anywhere i fish and it catches bass and if my jig bite goes away I have a tube tied on along a worm. I miss the Lake Fork crawtube I don't understand why they discontinued it.and im thinking about drop shot tubes heck yeah.
Having never fished a tube before, and fishing in clear to stained water blueback herring lakes. What hook would you use to Texas rig the tube? Thanks for all the info you guys share!!!!!
Even though this is an older video, can you please tell me the manufacturer, color code for the tube in the opening two minutes, sand with white tail! Phoenix used to make an identical one, but I’m unable to find it. Thanks
I used to fish for smallies long ago. Sadly, I cannot reach the places to catch them where I used to, as the park service or dnr or whoever/whatever “agency” controls access to that part of the river, has taken away all the parking within a 5+ mile radius of where i used to catch them. The on my way to access that part now, is through a private guide company, which no doubt, had a lot to do with limiting who can fish this area. Sadly, I can’t fish there anymore, and I refuse to pay that company that conspired with the agency to take away “free access” to one of my favorite places.
Caught my PB largemouth of 8lb2oz on a tube jig in Massachusetts last month. Was fishing for smallmouth and she was staging to spawn on a dropoff in 15fow
I knew you would make this video eventually and I'm hoping nobody from my area is watching, LOL! I always have a tube on deck and I catch the snot out of them every time.
Have you ever tried ISG Dream Tube 4" Great Lakes Series? If so what did you think? I recently found them on Tackle Warehouse and they look great. I can't wait to try them out in the next couple of days. Thank you for all of the videos you guys do, they have really helped me be a better angler.
Great video! I love using tubes, especially for smallmouth. I had the chance to fish Champlain a couple of years ago and I was using tubes rigged on a swinging football head jig and crushing those smallmouth. Question for you guys... do you use tubes in rivers? I feel like they could be deadly, especially those smaller ones but I'm not sure if I want to be using an open-style hook with them in a river. I feel like I will get snagged a lot. I know I could Texas-rig them but I'm not sure they will have the same, intended action as a regular tube hook.
I been fishing them weightless for years. Never seen anyone fishing them the way I do. I have had years where it's all I brought with me and for most part out fish anyone I brought with me. Even had people laugh at them when they first see them but by the end of the day everyone in the boat has a tube on.
I still flip tubes I prefer them over pretty much every plastic in that situation. That said if the fish are a little more aggressive I use a Guido bug as well.
Need help please!? I'm looking to buy a new spinning rod, to throw micro finness baits & very light crappie baits like 1/16 oz baits up to maybe 1/4 at heaviest. Something I can launch 1/16 crappie & micro baits a long distance!!! I'm the Expride B series should I get the 7' Light? Or the 7'2" med-light? I plan on using it for crappie & largmouth just very light lures. Wanna buy during the sale going right now. Is it worth going with the Expride B for this application? Or should I go with zodias & save the coin?
The sand colored stuff can do WONDERS In the Mississippi River when you only have a whopping 8-12” of visibility. You don’t think it’s clear water, but if you throw that color and know where the fish are, 10”+ visibility for sure and it just whacks em.

As a guy who fishes Smallmouth on Grand Traverse Bay in Michigan and lives on the bay. The smokey purples with any type of copper or purple fleck with destroy the smallies. Not sparkle or tiny color variants, but nice giant flecks in each tube. Thank me later
Can you show us how you rig the flipping tube?
I absolutely hammer the small mouth up here in the PNW with Gitzit tubes. Love those things.
I look forward to trying all of your input, in Ontario, going after big smallies this fall.
FYI the Berkely ned heads work great with small tubes like the coffee tube 2.75" been using them for years on St Clair
Do you fish the bait or set it on a c rig and let it sit?
I live in Michigan I fish StClair and a tube has been the most consistent way to get bites for smallmouths As much as I like a swim bait and a ned rig nothing catches them like a tube
Where at in this great state?
@@tims_always_fishing7117 I live by metro airport I fish the Detroit River Lake Erie and Lake St Clair mainly. I fished LSC yesterday caught some nice smallmouths
Does the Freedom Tackle tube jig head do the death-spiral down or does it sink downward like a rocket?
The giant musky tubes are awesome too
I’m in NE I use them for crappie on a bobber the small ones .
I do BFS in Texas. Gotta go dig out my tubes! Thanks!
Even though this is an older video, can you please tell me the manufacturer, color code for the tube in the opening two minutes, sand with white tail! Phoenix used to make an identical one, but I’m unable to find it. Thanks
How do you Texas rig that small tube? I sometimes need to fish heavy trees for smallmouth
I remember Guido Hibdon and his tube baits. 🐠 I still have some. I’m a bit of an old timer.
Was that spot lock at 7:30? I didn't know that it works in the wind like that. Cool. Got to upgrade one of these days.
Thanks!
Been fishing a tube since the 80's and fish it year round and have won tens of thousands of dollars on a tube and a jig & pig
Only place I’ve ever got my fishing advice from
Please share with us your flipping tube setup. I stopped flipping a tube because the tube just balls up on the hook, and I would lose too many fish.
I like using Ned heads for my tubes . I know the hook isn't big enough but works for me.
A 1/0 Ned head fits a 2.5'' fat tube absolutely perfectly.
I know I could Texas-rig them but I'm not sure they will have the same, intended action as a regular tube hook.
sounds crazy but when you go north try the white with silver flecks and salt they love them
You guys ever fish in Arizona?
I just used tubes for the 1st time. The smallmouth didn't just hit it, they blasted it. I'll keep them in my arsenal.
I been fishing them weightless for years. Never seen anyone fishing them the way I do. I have had years where it's all I brought with me and for most part out fish anyone I brought with me. Even had people laugh at them when they first see them but by the end of the day everyone in the boat has a tube on.
How do u rig weight less
I just caught my first smallie with that exact color x zone tube with a 2/o hook like 2 weeks ago, I knew that color was fire as soon as I saw it
I still flip tubes I prefer them over pretty much every plastic in that situation. That said if the fish are a little more aggressive I use a Guido bug as well.
So much good info, thanks!
Lost a good smallie few days ago on the 2.5 juvenile goby. Gotta get back out there
I soak an ear plug in scent and insert into the tube. it releases scent all day.
Been doing that sight tube deal my whole life, but even more for shallow cruising fish over deep clear water. They’ll follow it 35ft down a bluff.
