  • I demonstrate the 4 main ways of fishing the senko. These are the Texas rig, the wacky rig, flipping and pitching heavy cover and the Carolina rig for deeper water. I catch plenty of bass but the purpose of today's video is to explain each method!

    Honestly, Roland...25+ years of watching your stuff (I started watching you, Bill and Jimmy on TNN when I was a wee one back in the early 90s) and still, not many guys do it better than you when it comes to straightforward, “here’s how you do it” bass fishing advice...which is CRAZY because there are hundreds of “options” nowadays. You, Tactical and Nature of Fishing...that’s my big three.

    Nose hook with a circle hook. When they hit, and they will, just start reeling and the hook sets itself. Really good action that way too. Great way to start younger fisherman who always seem to have trouble on the hook set.

    • @SumOneSomewhere
      @SumOneSomewhere 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      johnny riley Another bonus of doing it that way with children is if they don’t set it quick enough and they swallow the hook it is less likely to gut hook and kill the fish.

    You can be quite accurate with a spinning too and there are spinnings that are offering line weight up to 20 and even 30 lbs and up to 2 oz lure. I guess it mostly depends on what you used for and personal preferences. Here in Scandinavia it's probably about 80% spinnings, 15% fly fishing and 5% casting. I don't know why those models are not reaching USA, but here we have spinnings that are capable to tow a carp of 60 lbs to the bank:-) All the best!

    I remember senkos really hit the scene in early 2000s. I'm not very old just been fishing a long while. Senkos where what taught me confidence in bass fishing. It's crazy because before senkos I was not confident in anything. From there it gave the confidence to fish with all soft plastics, jigs etc. Senkos are so effective.

    Great tutorial, Roland! Love your shows! I was first introduced to the effectiveness of the Senko, when my first-time-fishing friend bought a pack. I told him "no way are you going to catch a fish with that!" and thought he got suckered by the Bass Pro Shop employee into buying it. When he dropped the Senko straight down beside the dock and didn't concentrate on what he was doing, he got a hit and pulled up a 3lb bass! Still not convinced, I put one of his Senkos onto my line, was impressed with the weight of lure, cast it to the other-side of the channel, and bang, a 4lb bass hit it. Ever since that experience, I've been sold on the Senko and it's my number one go-to bait.
    BTW: You were using a weightless Texas Rig on your first setup of the Senko; and what you were doing with the heavy tackle and weighted Texas Rig is called "Punching" heavy cover, at least here in the California Delta. Keep On Fishing!

    Roland, what type of knot do you use to tie your Fluoro leader to braid? I tried a double uni with 15 pound Fluoro to 45 pound braid on my combo (St. Croix medium heavy, Abu Garcia Revo SX), and about 1 in 5 casts that knot will snag a guide, and backlash the reel. The double uni works great on my spinner, which has larger guides. It was so much of a pain, i went to straight Fluorocarbon. Are you tying with a blood knot?

    • @RolandMartinOutdoors

    A long, long time ago; perhaps in Nashville or near Lake Lanier 25 years ago, I was looking over a local lure rack when I heard a very familiar voice behind me. I turned around to confirm what I thought and sure enough there was Roland Martin. "What are they bitin on?" he asked. "What color?" I did my best to stammer out a "professional" response but I don't think I was very convincing. We had a few words and he went on. I don't remember the details now but I'll never forget the voice or the moment. Thanks Roland.

Thanks!

    5 inch green pumpkin senko on a TX rig and wacky is my go to here in East Texas. #4 hook on 50 lb braid and I don't fool with leaders. I have found it makes zero difference. I have caught more bass that way than any of my other lures combined. My #2 is a Berkley Choppo which I like better than the Whopper Plopper. I think the Choppo has a better sound and is more durable.

    Couldn't see you pull them out of the bushes because your cameraman just shows you and not where you drop the senko.

    Roland another great video, and you cracked me up when that 4lber jumped off. I guide full time saltwater for big snooks and reds I tell my clients all the time while snook fishing with my secret snook bait to keep tip high and slowly pick it up and “be a line watcher” cause when they hit you just see a quick jolt, sometimes I have guys that used to be or are bass guys and I tell them “fish it like a senko”. And “be a line watcher” And they all know what exactly what I’m talking about. Love it Roland. Happy bday, still waiting on you to get up here and catch some of these studs
