Well done and great driving always. For just pure driving fun I would take that Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 over any other Porsche available. What an incredible driver's car whether it wins this competition or not.
Personally I think the Cayman GTS 4.0 with PDK is a very smart choice, it's not as hard-core as the GT4 so better for all round use.
But if track weapons are the only thing you care about, there will be a GT4 RS coming out.... pricing is supposed to be around $100K USD
I'm still debating GT4 4.0 VS C8Z06. I love build quality of the Porsche but performance for $ is the Z06

@@Jesusprayerwarriorbw I have not heard anything about the C8 Z06 but the C7 Z06 in a manual is pretty sweet. It benefits from all the time GM spent refining the C7 platform. If you just want pure fun in driving and I would even say better reliability and bang for your buck the C7 Z06 or even the C7 Grand Sport is pretty sweet.
This GT4 base price is 100K. If they make an RS version it will be 150K plus

Considering we’re looking for lap times, the new PDK version maybe can be even faster, correcting that long gearing issue by keeping the engine always on it’s sweet spot. Great video! Many thanks!
I would guess that on an open track like this the long gearing isn't really a problem. It's only a problem for fun street driving at legal speeds. The PDK should definitely help the laptime though. In fact, my guess is that the long gearing is there to mitigate the slower shift times vs the PDK so you don't have to shift as often.
@@lemonpaper That makes sense! I don’t even see the long gearing as problem. But considering lap times, the pdk with it’s shorter gearing and faster shifts maybe can help the acceleration and shoot off the corners fast even on open tracks. If it wasn’t for the long gearing of that car, then it wouldn’t do much difference, I think.

Biggest difference on the new car? The new spec Cup Sport 2 N1 tires. I just put a set on my 2016 model and the difference was huge. At Laguna I’m sure it’s a second a lap faster now, especially with a proper alignment
It's also got the GT3 front end and more power.....
What a car, I love the GT4. If I can't find my way into a GT3 any time soon, the GT4 is my back up plan

yeah it might as well be an automatic since you hardly ever get to shift it anyways. Drive 90% of the track in one gear.

You can get any 2021 Cayman model with PDK now, so problem solved. The 7-speed PDK is, for a track car, the ultimate choice.
The one thing I always wonder about is if Honda had continued to develop the S2000. I would love the Japanese to be in the hunt against Cayman again, because they really had them mastered at the time.

they tested both cars head to head at Hockenheim and they were neck and neck, actually, the manual car was marginally faster in the end.
It seems that this cars mission is to be a “track toy” only. Part of the fun of owning a manual transmission car is that you get to do a lot of shifting, but on the road with this car it seems you would just spend 80% of the time in second gear. I also imagine that the overly stiff suspension would get a little tiring after a while. But having said that, I’m sure glad that cars like these exist. Love it.
This is my pick. Either this or the new GT3. I would happily give away a couple seconds of lap time for the tactile response of a manual transmission. All it needs is shorter gearing.

@@azimy9388 GT4 RS is in fact being tested with a 7 speed PDK, 4 liter engine, same being used in the normal GT4 but power up to 500hp
Despite the 4.0 size in engine, the exhaust note, and more importantly, the actual engine's note is like a sad puppy compared to 981 gen.
Of course, with enough money, ANYTHING can be solved in the aftermarket. But still...
Yeah even a 981 base with PSE sounds better. Little disappointing.

I think a lot of you guys are missing a couple of major points about the Cayman lineup, including the GT4:
1) The GT4 costs less than 1/2 what a GT3 RS costs, so Porsche is offering an incredible value here. Sure, the GT3 and GT3 RS are faster, but few drivers can extract that performance anyway, and on the street the Cayman GT4 will be just as fast. (ie. Porsche is not 'dumbing down' the Cayman. It's a different approach and price point)
2) You can order any Cayman model with PDK now, so no more gearing issues. For most of us the PDK will improve lap times (and save you from overreving) over the manual on track.
Lots of track hounds are snapping up the GT4 for track days, and saving big $$ over buying at GT3 model. Smart thinking IMO.

Why even bother with the top three gears? Pretty useless on anything other than a fast, open track or the autobahn.
@@idriwzrd Well gas mileage, but yeah, on a twisty backroad you'd basically only ever use 2nd gear, and maybe 3rd if you wanted to double the speed limit, or just give the engine a break. But it's not as fun as a closer ratio transmission.

10+ years ago, one of the Porsche race team principals said if a Cayman S made 400 hp it would be one of the greatest sports cars in the world.
He built one for himself and proved it, and now Porsche has built one for the masses. Being mid-engine and light they are incredible handling cars.

Would have been great to see the 718 spyder instead because its a bigger step forward from the 981 version. Better for street and pretty dang close on track. Arguably a better overall “Driver’s car”.

I don't care if this car doesn't have the numbers; I would buy this over the other "digital" auto cars out there no question. People get too caught up on the numbers but at the end of the day is all about the experience...

I’ve owned a C6 stick, a 370z stick, 997 911s pdk and an R8 smg . I’ve tracked a 458, a gtr and Huracan at exotics racing. My experience has led me to believe that a mid engine stick car that is not super powerful would be the most fun car for canyon carving as I get older and petrol engines fade away. So I started looking into the NA Caymans for a sports car that I ride into my retirement years because Porsche handling is super spot on like Ferrari. But then all I see about the new GT4 is “bad gearing for the road”. I’m super ssd about this. Any aftermarket rear end gears to tame the long gearing?

Love the car not the colour. Basically any other exterior colour option on the GT4 is better. Saying that it would be a dream driving it around Laguna Seca.
It is not a 992 engine, it is a totally different 4 liter engine and is in the GTS also.
Save the Manual Transmission this is a true race car, and drivers car put together, and perhaps the now Mach 1
i loved this video ,,,,porsche needs to seriously unlash the power for the 718 petrol engine and NA are dying breed its a shame not to give this chassis its full potential for car enthusiast and Porsche icon name sake... i bet GT4 RS unleashed would beat both ferrari F8 and lambo Evo on this track
