New Dad here. Thank you for adding the info about the car seat. Wish all reviewers touched on this when talking about back seat space. Keep up the good work Tom!
The first gen, although considered to be subpar in its class, at least looked distinct. This one just blends in and almost looks like a minivan. Love the look of those brown seats, though.
Just bought one. Love love love it. So far. Just enough power. Could use a little kick. But I like it fine. SE 4motion 25k out the door !!! Loaded. LoL. Guess they aren't selling well. Can't say I don't like anything as I said. Jealous of your loaner I wanted that interior. Very very rare.
If you’re looking for a smaller suv that can fit 7 in a pinch, this is a good choice. The third row isn’t enough for a cross country trip, but it’s fine for extra kids going to the cottage. By the way, it’s 4 wheel drive, not all wheel drive...two differentials.
The one in the video is a pretty dull colour and has the trendline/base model rims. If you go with higher trimlines, like the Highline and the R Line package, it's just as sexy as an Audi Q5 in my opinion.
The seats look beautiful but they are some of the most uncomfortable things I've ever sat in! My dad likes them though. He often gets one of these as a rental when he's traveling for work
I had the SEL Premium in last week and your review is pretty much in line with my thoughts. For me, if you must have a mid-sized crossover I think this is the one to get, but save $500 and skip the 3rd-row option.
I agree with the power tailgates I find them useless and slow for the most part I guess when you have a whole bunch of the stuff in your hands and the kick tailgate is cool but still! Often so slow. We have them on the grand caravans at work and they are slow as heck
You chips add on cost of ownership. Vw uses an imperfect direct injection system which requires valve cleaning at an out of pocket cost up to $2k! Not covered by warranty. They consider it routine maintenance!
Got one of these a few months ago, fuel economy is much better than rated. You should do your own fuel economy testing to get some real opinion on its usage.
Did the Atlas have this many nooks and crannies? I am considering a large number of Atlas vehicles for fleet duty, hense my question. Fantastic video as always.
The size increase is just insane. 8.5 inches longer! golly. I know design is subjective, but I definitely sit on the 'this is extraordinarily dull' side of the fence. Super unimaginative, but whatchoo expect for a 'compact' SUV? I've seen some very cheap lease prices advertised for the basic S model at $75 a month with 3k down - i'm sure it'll tempt some.
Great review, as always. Your style is A1. The ONLY way to get LED headlights is to step up to the SEL Premium which starts at $36k. Adaptive cruise control? SEL which starts at $31k. This is why it took me so long to consider a German because the options are always so wonky. Smh.
It looks good but the fuel economy still stinks compared to the Rav4/CRV as stated and it's more expensive than those 2 models. VW dropped 16 HP despite the vehicle gaining weight esp. on the 4Motion version which does NOT make sense! The 3rd row seat is ridiculous unless you literally have children. Otherwise, forget about it and get the AWD version that comes without that 3rd row seat. I'd consider the newer Tiguan but don't like the weaker engine and the higher price. Lastly, VWs have a BAD reputation for quality compared to the Toyota/Honda CUV models.
I like it alot but Volkswagens are so damn expensive to fix and no one has any parts on their all dealer parts and knowing you're really fix them except for special for mechanics or the dealership it just isn't worth the hassle
I test drove this Tiguan while my 2016 Tiguan was in the shop/dealership. I was so disappointed with the interior in the newer Tiguan's. It feels and looks cheap compared to the older models and it doesn't have the spacious feel like the previous generation. Drives and handles nicely but I wouldn't spend this much when there's better options available for less.
This is a great reason to go GSW or Alltrack. The tig' has to many compromises and the front styling is down right dowdy/boring. The Atlas has better front styling. Best to opt for 4motion just to get rid of the 3rd row which is best left for the Atlas, Rogues, highlanders , and cx-9s of the world. Personally I'm not a fan which is where the GSW and Alltrack come into play. They (vw) needed to dvlp the 1st gen into a small touareg but as usual, vw dropped the ball. (Audi smaudi)
Tom, I know that many models give a "cheap" treatment to the back doors compared to the front. But I don't remember seeing that extend to a different color scheme as in this example. Regardless, great review as always! Not sure why you have 1/10th the subscribers of some "other" reviewers. The quality of your work deserves a larger audience.
cmon mr vw...i used to be a holden lover but now i love my old tiguan...best car ive ever driven...but its getting bloody old and i cant afford a new 1
Tom my boy, if given the opportunity, I'm sure you could sell sand to an Arab (and that was not a racist term) Not sure about this vehicle - but then, as you know I'm a Volvo man - however your review was/is excellent; you do execute your job WELL
Love that they made this slower, less dynamic, more expensive and number than the prior gen. This will thrive with Americans. No one really likes to enjoy driving anyways. They nailed it
Do you mean down? The back seats were up and the sliding rear seat was set to the middle position where an average sized person could ride fairly comfortably. I aways test with the rear seats up and seating for four. I'll drop the third row if the car has one because people don't always use it.
Drove the Outlander and it was nothing special. While the 184 hp in the Tig ia not overwhelming, the 170hp in the Outlander made it a dog, especially with CVT and passing. Felt like it couldn't kick down to a passing gear no matter how hard it tried. Nothing refined about it, and overall, while cheaper than the Tig, it was just plain meh for me.
I like it but I think the controls are overly complex for its targeted market. If you have to dig into the controls in order to find volume features, or simply just to change the radio station, to me that makes any vehicle automatically not worth buying, ESPECIALLY HONDA, WORST INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM EVER(former Honda owner, I got rid of my 2016 Fit for this very reason) unless the car you are buying is a Ferrari, but then again you're getting the vehicle for totally different purpose in that case. For regular people, to do this assuming to them, with an infotainment system that is basically another way to say "Hello there, we usually don't talk to the public to find out what drivers really want, or what is in their best interest, since none of our departments talk to each other, and we wouldn't know terms like Logistics or customer preferences, meant if they bit us in the face, so here is a nice car that we totally screwed over with a terrible infotainment system, have a nice day!" That is just so messed up! I am simply amazed how many companies do this. To simply assume everyone automatically knows how to use all this technology without doing any market research of any kind. Or the fact that they were design it so poorly! Truly mind-boggling.
B4 u but it, i received a recall notice on the 2018 Tiguan , saying the ambient roof lighting module can catch fire, due to humidity?? They say it takes an hour to disconnect , and there is no known repair at this time, there working on a repair. So im paying for features i no longer have, may not ever have again. ??? They have yet to make this known to the public , only current owners. In the mean time, if u own one dont put ur kids in it!! There still selling them knowing its defect!!! And still not making it known to the public. V. W. Ur credibility already sucks with ur diesel scam, now hide cars that can catch fire??? Shame on u. Buyer beware!!!
Good review. VW gimped this very passable vehicle by giving it an underpowered and coarse engine for this class of vehicle. Loaded with 5, let alone 7 people, this thing will move like a slug. Why didn't they just put the GTI engine, or base engine of the Atlas, is beyond me. I guess it's just the Germans hating Americans for winning The War.
One of the reasons I love this channel is that you DON'T review high-end supercars..!! Keep doin what you're doin..!!🖒
I do occasionally. I try to mix it up.
Right...mix it up..man I really.. really want this channel to bloom.
By the way...love the "evil twinn" angle..!!
New Dad here. Thank you for adding the info about the car seat. Wish all reviewers touched on this when talking about back seat space. Keep up the good work Tom!
Love ❤️ my '19 sel premium...good handling and gas ⛽️ mileage, decent power, roomy and comfortable interior, quiet and smooth ride 🙂
The first gen, although considered to be subpar in its class, at least looked distinct. This one just blends in and almost looks like a minivan. Love the look of those brown seats, though.
Tom is a legend
Just bought one. Love love love it. So far. Just enough power. Could use a little kick. But I like it fine.
SE 4motion 25k out the door !!! Loaded. LoL. Guess they aren't selling well.
Can't say I don't like anything as I said. Jealous of your loaner I wanted that interior. Very very rare.
I call it the Tiglong now since we only get the extended wheelbase.
If you’re looking for a smaller suv that can fit 7 in a pinch, this is a good choice. The third row isn’t enough for a cross country trip, but it’s fine for extra kids going to the cottage. By the way, it’s 4 wheel drive, not all wheel drive...two differentials.
I don't hate the styling, but it already looks old to me. The square profile and large headlight enclosures give it a serious early-mid 2000s vibe
Marco B looks like that because it doesn't have those led light option saw one in grey with the full led package yesterday and it looks awesome
The one in the video is a pretty dull colour and has the trendline/base model rims. If you go with higher trimlines, like the Highline and the R Line package, it's just as sexy as an Audi Q5 in my opinion.

"my measurement metric". lol. love it!
I had the SEL Premium in last week and your review is pretty much in line with my thoughts. For me, if you must have a mid-sized crossover I think this is the one to get, but save $500 and skip the 3rd-row option.
Yeah, I haven't seen it but my guess is it's for small kids in a pinch. No pun intended.
This is actually a compact
Compact, not Midsize!
Great review Tom, nice landscape! Greetings from Argentina!!
I'll get there some day.
I agree with the power tailgates
I find them useless and slow for the most part
I guess when you have a whole bunch of the stuff in your hands and the kick tailgate is cool but still! Often so slow.

You’re right we just bought a 2022 and it gets 35 on the highway it’s insane
Looks like you're doing this review in Bellevue, Washington.
Did the Atlas have this many nooks and crannies? I am considering a large number of Atlas vehicles for fleet duty, hense my question. Fantastic video as always.

The Germans are hardly alone there.
I agree, review what people are buying.
+1
how to use a key fob if, you start the car from inside the house and no heat on in the car,why ?
Looks good. Very nice.

Leave it to Tom to make this Tiguan actually seem appealing.
Are we going to get the 2018 Audi A4 Avant in North America?
I like it alot but Volkswagens are so damn expensive to fix and no one has any parts on their all dealer parts and knowing you're really fix them except for special for mechanics or the dealership it just isn't worth the hassle
Love my 2018 R-Line

May be a stupid question but does the SE have parking sensors? It doesn’t say on the website! Thank you in advance !!
I think it might have front sensors but it's been awhile since I did that review. If it's not on the website you might call (or visit) a dealer.
Driven Car Reviews oh okay. Thank you so much!!
The old tiguan also rides on the MQB platform

Why don’t MFRs issue review units with “popular” colors? I like the car, but can’t get over the color.
Please review the Arteon when it arrives. Thanks in advance!
It's on the list.
This is a little off the subject, but can anyone tell me if Ford is discontinuing the Fusion here in the U.S?
Yes
New Tiguan needs a more powerful engine options!
very good thanks
How this vehicle stand up against the competitors? Stylish? Reliable? Fun to drive? Cheap?
Great review, Tom. Pretty interior (except the mismatched front/rear door cards), but... the gas mileage :-(
The lack of rear door trim is a tactic many auto makers use to save money. Upper model might add it, I have not checked.
Tom, I know that many models give a "cheap" treatment to the back doors compared to the front. But I don't remember seeing that extend to a different color scheme as in this example. My only wish is that the auto start/stop had a memory function so I wouldn't have to press the button to turn it off every time I drive.
I do believe that's a requirement from the feds. Something I'll check on...
Thanks Tom!
I believe they're given a federal tax credit if they make it non - latching.
You’re able to turn it off and keep off on BMW
Yes, I was going to say that.
At last - a car that doesn't do the dreaded dance of the needles when you turn it on. I'm sold.
You just need to do a simple re-wire and it will do that, my friend did that with his tiguan limited, I think it works for the new version too
Don`t understand why the rear doors doesn`t match front on the upholstery department!
You mean the trim panel? Lots of manufacturers do that to save money.
Yes! I thought so, looks mismatched, now I get it. Always a fan of your reviews!!!
cmon mr vw...i used to be a holden lover but now i love my old tiguan...best car ive ever driven...but its getting bloody old and i cant afford a new 1

I think it would look much better in a lighter color.
Bextar636 no it doesn't
no front and rear door courtesy lights?? i just see reflectors.. wtf!!!
This is a pretty base model. Perhaps the higher ones have it. Go out and look then let us know.
Love that they made this slower, less dynamic, more expensive and number than the prior gen. This will thrive with Americans. No one really likes to enjoy driving anyways. They nailed it
Honda CRV or Tiguan?
Only you can make that decision. Drive them both (and maybe a couple more) and pick the one that works for you.
I'm about to go broke broke
9 packs ? you could have fitted 12 easily with the back seats up.
Do you mean down? The back seats were up and the sliding rear seat was set to the middle position where an average sized person could ride fairly comfortably. I aways test with the rear seats up and seating for four. I'll drop the third row if the car has one because people don't always use it.
Up.
Headlight design is so a decade ago. Needs HID headlights low beam or LED.
there's cheap conversion kits for that thankfully! :)
Vw styling is really hit or miss for me. This one is a miss. Been driving vw the 7 years I've been on the road.
As unadventurous and boring to look at as the current get Mitsu Outlander.

Him! Why NY Times booted him? He was good, especially using Costco toilet paper.
Finally found me, huh? glad you're impressed, at least with the TP.
Bland.
Dull and boring to look at
....junk.
