Suddenly realized that the Sonic IOS port situation is exactly the same as with Super Mario Bros. Deluxe: faithful preservation, modern additions such as a world map, cutscenes and challenges, tons of extra content, and even the sequel game as a bonus; in short, the definitive version of their flagship series’ debut title trapped in an a neglected mobile port. Don’t know about Derek and Grace but I’d kill for a full screen port
"I've been doing this a couple of years now" that's an understatement man you've been doing this a long time! Love your content from the hvgn days and love to see where you are now!

I love Sonic Team, so I really hope they benefit from it right for the next game(s).

If they keep it in 2D, then the future is bright. If they try again another 3D, we will have more of the same. Compared with Mario, Sonic still didn't found his formula for the upgrade to 3D. Will it really translate great in 3D? They have to find "that thing" that is still missing. The 3D one that I really enjoyed was Sonic Generations, and even that one still being good, it isn't as the original ones (Sonic 1, CD, 2, 3, Knuckles) and Sonic Mania was.
Yup. It worked on the bigger iPod Classic too! There was also a Java version on the phone. I would love Derek to review all the crazy Java ports of classic games.
Yes, my friend had it. I remember it being really difficult to play as it was on a nano gen 5, the one with the portrait screen, and the game was displayed horizontally so you either had to play one handed or with both hands on one side of the screen.

Minor correction, sorry if it's already been pointed out! TL;DR M2 were talking about their "GigaDrive" MegaDr...I mean _Genesis_ emulation architecture, and needing to add extra VRAM to that _emulated hardware._ They weren't necessarily implying that they were pushing the 3DS to its limits, they were probably far from it. Besides, we all know the true limit of the 3DS was being able to render 4 (8) Ice Climbers simultaneously in Smash Bros! All joking aside, they upgraded _their emulated Genesis_ the same way the NAOMI upgraded the Dreamcast's VRAM by doubling it, or the Sega Chihiro could use more than the 64 MB RAM of the XBOX it was based on. Can you imagine if the 3DS was able to do all it did with only 64K VRAM? The _Genesis_ only had 64K of VRAM, so they hacked their emulated Genesis to run as if it had 128K VRAM. It makes a lot of sense when you consider they basically doubled up on everything in the background with a copy being rendered for each eye. I was originally going to compare the GameCube to the Triforce but that's reportedly just a retail DOL-001 mainboard with all the extra arcade bits tacked onto it. The Chihiro _sometimes_ added extra RAM to the original XBOX, and you can actually play the Chihiro games that required 128MB RAM like Virtua Cop 3 if you've got an original developer "XDK" system. If you are certifiably insane and equally skilled, you can solder an extra 64MB RAM into an original XBOX and it will run those Chihiro games with little fuss! I had to look it up again to make sure, but the OG XBOX (and the Chihiro by extension) actually had a unified memory architecture. Kind of neat for 2001, although a bit ahead of its time.

Hey Derek! So good to see you and Producer Grace are healthy and doing well. Thanks for the new episode of “Punching Weight”, you two always make me more interested in a subject when you cover it, and you’ve made me more interested in anything Sonic, than I have been in ages.
I thought that Sonic Master System port looked familiar, until you unveiled that it was also the Game Gear version. I've got some fond memories of that game. One year me and my Dad took a trip up to Oregon from California to retrieve my grandmother's car (I think my Dad was going to sell it for some reason). We met up with her and other family members, and I forget how, but I ended up with a Gamegear and Sonic, Streets of Rage 2, and Columns. The whole drive back I played it, the backlit screen helping me see in the night time hours on the road. I must have had a stash of batteries or a car inverter, because I don't remember running out of juice.
Just wanted to drop in and tell you that you are doing a great job. 'm a recent subscriber and you are up there with The Metal Jesus in terms of awesome game collectors. Thank you so much.
The drop dash didn't originate from Sonic Mania, it was intended to be in Sonic 3 but Sonic Team decided against it in favour for the insta shield. This was discovered in the Sonic 3 prototype.
I’m on the “release the iOS Whitehead remakes of 1, 2 and CD on console already” camp. It’s not like the original Sonic 1 is in dire need of preserving, anyway. There are a LOT of Mega Drive (sorry, Brazilian here) collections with the original available on every system. And the best version is hostage on iOS, with no way to play it comfortable, with a controller, on a big screen, without a lot of tinkering.
The best way to play it on the TV at the moment is via an Amazon Fire TV Stick and a bluetooth controller - but I agree, it needs to be released on everything.
Don't be sorry! I'm from Argentina and I'll always call it the Mega Drive. South America loved that console and the Master System and will never let them die
I use Android, but I see your point. If you want the console experience, buy the Android version from Google Play using BlueStacks (an Android emulator for PC) and configure a Bluetooth controller. Even if your computer doesn't have HDMI out, adapters are easy to find and a lot of them also plug into the headphone jack to give you audio on your TV.
Nice video! I have some good childhood memories of Sonic 8-bit and other Master System titles. Although at the time I was disappointed that I couldn't play the latest Mega Drive entries (I mean, I said I wanted a Sega machine, how were my generous and well-meaning grandparents to know the difference?), stuff like Sonic 8-bit and Sonic Chaos and Batman Returns and Master of Darkness would probably have completely passed me by otherwise, so I'm glad I got to experience them when I did.
2:00 My first Sonic game was Advanced 1, so when I went back to Sonic 1 andd didn't have a spin dash I fumbled through the manual to see if there was something I had missed. The manual said Sonic could perform a "spin dash" but that was just what it called the action of running forward and pressing down, making Sonic roll into a ball.
My first Sonic game was Sonic 2. When I played Sonic 1 I felt like I was playing an archaic version of sonic. I didn't play Sonic 2 for the speed. I always went for the rings. Tried to collect them all. Still do, actually. Even so, Sonic 1 felt old when I played it. If my first experience were with the advance series, I certainly would feel like going to the prehistory of gaming when playing Sonic 1.
Just make the 3D Punching Weight! I don't watch your videos for 3D I watch it to learn new things, you're entertaining and the effort you put in your videos.
2:16: Glad this video highlighted the music from Bridge Zone in Sonic 1 8-bit, and I also really love that stage's impressionistic backgrounds. 🔥👏 I pray that level gets reimagined in Sonic Mania 2.
I had a colleague who was convinced the Master System version of Sonic the Hedgehog came first and the Mega Drive / Genesis version was a port of it. He would not be told otherwise.
The Game Gear was my first gaming system, and Sonic one of my first games. I remember it fondly, it felt pretty awesome to me. Didn't play the 16bit version until much later so I couldn't miss the few missing details.
I love how Derek (or someone) goes through and likes these comments but doesn't reply to them. So you know your recommendation was seen....but you won't find out if he followed it.
Well, the Sega Ages do have a "widescreen mode" of sorts, just stretched to TV/Switch screen dimensions. Also, the 8-bit Sonic game got a 3DS Virtual Console-esque release with bonus features like borders and save states, which I have fond memories of playing. It runs great, and you don't need the thicc boi Wide Lens to play.
I got a cheap Game Gear like a year after it was released. I had Columns for it. But I got immediately got a Master Gear Converter and picked up quite a few Master System games new and used for next to nothing in my small town to play on the Game Gear.
Something I'd like to see is a video about all the bootleg ports of games to 8- and 16-bit consoles, or even just homebrew classic console stuff. I'd love to see what people who know the hardware inside and out are able to do with it.
There was even a version for Old Cellphones. It was Sonic the Hedgehog Java wich was separated in 2 parts, the first time i completed this game was from that version!
You gotta try the 3D on one of the "New 3DS" models, the super-stable 3D is so much of an improvement it makes the original 3DS feel like an unfinished proof-of-concept
The drop dash actually wasn't created by Taxman and Stealth apparently, the leaked prototype of Sonic 3 a month or so ago had the drop dash. It wouldn't surprise me if Iizuka gave the drop dash idea to the team, recalling its original implementation, but ultimate removal from Sonic 3.
There's one notable missing port -- the iPod Video port. It was a complete remake that used the click wheel to play, and ran at a native 320x240 showing more of the screen than the original Genesis version. I played it over and over on the bus, and it was a treat. There's also the miserable java ports for j2me phones. They're worth noting, but not worth playing.
In my teen years, I ended up getting the Master System version of Sonic on the Wii Virtual Console because my brother and I didn’t realize it was the “wrong version.” So thats effectively the version I grew up with. Still had a fun time with that version, and of course I’ve played the Genesis version a bunch. Either’s a good time.
People always bring up Resident Evil 4 and Skyrim for being ported to every console known to man but Sonic 1 never gets brought up. Sonic 1 just sneaks to every console and everyone is just like "Oh, cool. Sonic 1."
honestly i think one port worth mentioning is the DS collection. The fact that the system can run Genesis at all is impressive but Sega even hired the developer responsible by the genesis emulator for the DS
As far as I remember, it was supposed to be a loose spinoff of Outrun where instead of driving across beautiful Europe, you drove on tracks that resembled rollercoasters. It's not as fondly remembered or quite as good, but it's still fun. And the music kicks ass.
You know what games have more complex port histories? Dragon's Lair with 26 ports plus other versions and Lemmings with 29 version excluding multiple fan made ports.
There were plenty more Master System games released after Sonic 1 here in the UK, we got a MS version of Sonic 2 and a standalone called Sonic Chaos! You should discuss these if you haven't already :)
I had the Sonic Classic Collection for the DS which included Sonic 1. I'm not sure who handled that port but I remember hating it solely because you had to touch the touch screen to pause the game, it couldn't be done through a button input.
Did anybody ever play that Flash version of Sonic Advance that used to be all over the internet? I remember it was on coolmathgames or something like that back in my middle and high school days. It wasn't officially licensed by Sega or anything but it was pretty incredible how smoothly they got it to run for a 2006 Flash game.
Yeah, one thing I never much liked about the SMS / GG is the tinny little sound chip... but Sonic 8-bit had some of the best music on the system, thanks to Yuzo Koshiro. (Same with Shinobi GG because guess who did the music for that too.)
If I had control of Sonic Team, I'd make them do like, Sonic Jam but for the new millenium. Including remastered and improved versions of like, everything up to the Adventure bi-logy. Sonic hasn't done quite so well with "new" content, but improving on old content always seems to get both fans and the mainstream happy.
My head did explode when i downloaded sonic on VC. It played just like i remembered it on the genesis and my 16 year old brain almost couldnt handle it
Wow, I didn’t know that it was possible to talk about the Master System without mentioning Brazil even once. Congratulations, Derek.

I use Android, but I see your point. If you want the console experience, buy the Android version from Google Play using BlueStacks (an Android emulator for PC) and configure a Bluetooth controller. Even if your computer doesn't have HDMI out, adapters are easy to find and a lot of them also plug into the headphone jack to give you audio on your TV.
you can play it on Nvidia Shield TV no problems, and its amazing. Well any android TV box works too.
YEAH the second part of Sonic The Hedgehog ports! You are great Uncle Derek!
Derek, where’d you get that shirt? I neeeeed it.
I googled Fu this but here is the link:

Good to know that people learn learn about Sonic 1 8bit. That game was really underappreciated.
*Sees shirt*
“S’awwwwwnic!”
We love you, Derek!
"GAME COLLECTING IS DUMB". You are so right, that made me literally laugh out loud.
Sonic 1 for the Master System was my first video game ever. I love that game so much still to this day, it's really fun!
I have both the 3DS and Switch versions of Sonic 1 and I didn't know how hard it was to make the 3DS one. That's *ahem* way past cool!
Man THANK YOU DEREK ALEXANDER!!
Just make the 3D Punching Weight! I don't watch your videos for 3D I watch it to learn new things, you're entertaining and the effort you put in your videos.
Sonic 8 bits ost was fire
2:16: Glad this video highlighted the music from Bridge Zone in Sonic 1 8-bit, and I also really love that stage's impressionistic backgrounds. 🔥👏 I pray that level gets reimagined in Sonic Mania 2.
I had a colleague who was convinced the Master System version of Sonic the Hedgehog came first and the Mega Drive / Genesis version was a port of it.
He would not be told otherwise.
4:14 I actually don't know Yuzo Koshiro from Streets of Rage, but from his work on Etrian Odyssey; his rpg battle themes absolutely slap!
The Game Gear was my first gaming system, and Sonic one of my first games. I remember it fondly, it felt pretty awesome to me. Didn't play the 16bit version until much later so I couldn't miss the few missing details.
Thanks for the fun vid Uncle Derek!
I love seeing any video by you in my sub box.
I know they aren't offcial but theres some cool Homebrew "ports" on tbe Nintendo DS like porta and minecraft among probably more IV never heard of
Bro, clean your 3DS...it's filthy!
Unky Derek! I think a video/series about Resi 4 ports would be up your street. Cover the iOS and 3DS for extra credit, boyo.
And the Zeebo version as well. Actually, I think the Zeebo itself is worth of a Punching Weight episode.
Something I'd like to see is a video about all the bootleg ports of games to 8- and 16-bit consoles, or even just homebrew classic console stuff. I'd love to see what people who know the hardware inside and out are able to do with it.
SSFF keeping me sane during quarantine by telling me about awful Sonic 1 ports? It's more likely than you think.
The fact about the sonic 2013 ports being exclusive to mobile feels kinda dated after the release of Sonic Origons!
True... but it's still not good
People always bring up Resident Evil 4 and Skyrim for being ported to every console known to man but Sonic 1 never gets brought up.
I would love a re-release of the Master System version. That was the one i grew up with. I would love to get a chance to play it again.
6:58 Hmm, never heard of Power Drift before, but I dig the rough polygonal graphics.
As far as I remember, it was supposed to be a loose spinoff of Outrun where instead of driving across beautiful Europe, you drove on tracks that resembled rollercoasters. It's not as fondly remembered or quite as good, but it's still fun. And the music kicks ass.
Will we get a Game Gear Micro punching weight? Boy I hope so. Do it Derek! It's even got a Sonic Port!
You know what games have more complex port histories? Dragon's Lair with 26 ports plus other versions and Lemmings with 29 version excluding multiple fan made ports.
Sonic 8-bit is a surprisingly good entry in the Sonic series. It's an easy game, but I really enjoyed it. Maybe it's the great music.
There were plenty more Master System games released after Sonic 1 here in the UK, we got a MS version of Sonic 2 and a standalone called Sonic Chaos! You should discuss these if you haven't already :)
Love this video/channel and Strafefox's videos are amazing also
I had the Sonic Classic Collection for the DS which included Sonic 1. I'm not sure who handled that port but I remember hating it solely because you had to touch the touch screen to pause the game, it couldn't be done through a button input.
I just wanted to point out that I played a sonic 1 port on mobile phones back in 2004-2005 that was extremely bare bones but had each level.
Side note: There was also a DS collection called Sonic Classic Collection.
He even managed to make the soundtracks for the Master System versions of the Streets of Rage games sound good. The guy knew what he was doing.
I guess "relevatory" for Derik is "aethstetic" for me. I simply cannot say that word correctly the first try, no matter how hard I try.
Aesthetic is one of those words that looks far more complicated than it sounds: _"ass theh tick"_
@@alfiehicks1 I'm aware how it's *supposed* to be pronounced. My mouth just wont say it. It always comes out "ath-stetic"
Ah, Koshiro-san. He even guested on the TSA. Now that's cool!
Hey Derek awesome shirt!
A follow up this soon? You shouldn't have, Derek!
Lmao at the Sable shirt being your only Sonic shirt.
Cant get enough of this
Wooot, wooot MORE PORTS!
My head did explode when i downloaded sonic on VC. It played just like i remembered it on the genesis and my 16 year old brain almost couldnt handle it
M2 might be the real deal but they'll never catch up to Taxman and Stealth's accomplishments and that's a hot fact.
Ican't wait for more streams!! hopefully more spooky games :(
