Oh yes, it gets verrrry cutthroat right off the bat, kind of reminds me of Blue Lagoon a little in that regard. I lovvvvve how mean this one is!!!!! Thanks for watching & commenting as always! Hope you get to try Horus soon! ✌️
Loving these reviews of older games, although my biggest fear is I’ll see one I desperately want, but it’s no longer available. Fortunately I found a copy of this game brand new and for a great price on eBay, so thanks for highlighting another game I hadn’t heard of 👍🏼
Thanks for watching! Yeah, luckily this one is pretty easy to find as of now! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. It’s definitely more of a gamer’s game, but if you like competing for area control, you’ll love it!!
Thanks for another revealed gem. cannot believe this one passed me by when it was originally released. It looks like a great game and one I will definitely try to get if I can.
Thanks for watching!! It’s such an interesting tile game. It looks a bit dry when you see it, but I find the decisions to be soooo good revolving around the cards you play & how you have to constantly prevent all your opponents from overtaking your areas. Great stuff! Hope you get to try it!
Another awesome game i must find a copy of...great video!...A simple tie breaker id say would be at the beginning of the game draw one tile if its water put it back until you draw a land tile. At end game scoring if tied whoever has more discs on that colour land breaks the tie.
Oooo Takenoko, I totally forgot about that one! That’s a fun game! I need to get that played sometime soon. It’s been collecting dust on my shelf for a few years 😅 Alhambra is always a fun time for sure! I’m one of the few weirdos who doesn’t _love_ Keyflower. It’s not a bad game, but it’s not my favorite. I will still play it, but I don’t own it anymore. 🤷🏻♂️ Thanks for watching B7! 😎
@@undiscovered_gameshaha oh noooo!! Yeah I totally understand, got a few friends who don't really enjoy kf too! Ooh totally forgot to mention Isle of skye, just played it today with a new expansion that one of my friends just got! Still a great game! 👏😺
@@boardgameswithb7 I’ve never played Isle of Skye 😱 😱 I always thought it looked so much like Carcassonne. But a lot of people have recommended it to me. I’ll have to check it out!
I haven't actually played any of these: Keyflower, Alhambra, Takenoko or Isle of Skye. I've had my eye on Alhambra for awhile though. You think it holds up?
@@MeeplesandBaneenees Alhambra is more of a "comfort" type of game. It is pleasant but not _amazing_ or anything. I enjoy it for what it is. I regrettably culled my old version and upgraded to the big box, which I ended up also culling because it took up too much space. I hope to add the original version back to my collection one day, because I do miss it sometimes. It's not what I would consider an essential game, but it's certainly enjoyable. Takenoko is a beautifully produced game. I love that one simply for how great the components are, and the gameplay holds up too.
Great video! Definitely another game that I had never seen. It looks really good with some interesting mechanics. I would love to try it out for sure. I haven't looked yet to see how hard it is to find, but if there are a decent number of copies still floating around the second hand market, I suppose you could get a second game and then add a few extra tiles each of the four terrain stacks to elongate a 3 or 4 player game.
Hey there’s a great idea!!! I had not thought of that. You could give each player some more discs too to start the game 🤔 🧐 Thanks for the tip! As of now it’s pretty easy to find, but that could always change 😅
Awesome! Let me know how you like it! I try to mention if a game plays well at 2p, and this one definitely does. I do _prefer_ this at 3p, but my wife and I play this at 2p regularly. It's somewhat rare to find an area control game that works well at 2p. I only have a couple, and those games hold a special place in my collection! Thanks for the comment! Hope you enjoy Horus as much as we do!!
@@zachburnett2433 I do enjoy it at 2p, but it feels much different at higher player counts. Much like this game, there is a lot of back and forth "tit for tat" where you're just trying to squeeze out 1 or 2 points more than your opponent each turn. I prefer these types of games at more than 2p because the game pulls you more directions. But it's certainly not bad at 2p at all. There are still some fun choices to weigh. It just feels very different.
Looks like a great game....another reason to be skeptical of the BGG rating of older games like this. I'm getting a shelf full, due in no small part to your channel :)
I’ve found some amazing games in the upper 5’s and low 6’s, but they are few and far between. This might be my favorite game in the 5’s in my whole collection. Maybe I should make an episode about games with low BGG ratings that I love… that could make an interesting video 🤔 🤔 Thanks for watching as always!
I've looked at Horus several times but the BGG comments about the card- and tile-draw randomness have always given me pause. It sounds like this wasn't too big of an issue in your opinion? Also curious if you've ever tried Cornwall: it's kinda like Carc with funky tiles and money. The area majority stuff is a little too tamped down for my liking but, since you like tile-layers, it may be up your alley.
Thanks for the comment! The luck of the draw does not bother me whatsoever in Horus. In Carcassonne it bothers me because you draw a tile and that's it. But here the cards give you _plenty_ of luck mitigation in my opinion. Sure, you have that first random tile draw, but where you place it is often directed by the cards you have in your hand combined with trying to cut off opponents or build out certain regions. There are _so_ many ways you can build the map and tons of scoring pursuits (you have 20 control discs, which is enough to go after lots of small regions or challenge your opponents for their bigger regions). Plus, the lack of a game board lets you build that map however you want and pursue endless strategic possibilities. So all in all, yes there is a bit of luck, but not nearly enough to deter me. I would compare it to the luck of the dice rolling in Genesis: plenty of ways to work around it. The only gripe I have with Horus is that game length/player count issue I talked about in the video: At 4p it just feels like the game ends right as it's starting to get good. I wish it would let you play a bit longer, so a house rule might need to be implemented. Anyway, thanks for the comment as always!! And no, I have not played Cornwall! I will add it to the research list for sure; thanks for the tip! Cheers!
Interesting twists to this game! Not to knock the art bc I know you’re a fan, but I wish I could give it a little bit of a glow up. Just a slightly more modern look, though I appreciate the simplicity in every regard. So just some little tweaks. Particularly bc my need to line up the lines feels disturbed by not seeing the grid clearly 😂
But I meant to say-great vid as always! Love hearing your recs. This is so affordable I’m tempted to pick it up and try to make my own art. Ofc am I really gonna do that? Prob not with a 2yr old running around lol
Thanks for watching & for the comments! Yes, the art definitely could be freshened up a little. I agree the game looks a bit dry... I think it actually looks a little nicer in person than in the video. Personally I like the art more from a functional point of view, especially how the disc colors don't compete with the tile colors. It's very easy to visualize the regions and such. But I agree it could use a little more pizzazz. I know what you mean about lining up the tiles too; those little notches are a bit hard to see, and it's hard to keep everything straight. It would be cool to find a play mat or something that had a large grid, just to help line up the tiles. But I think the photos and video make it look a little worse than it actually is in person. Anyway, if you like Carcassonne at all, I would highly recommend this one if you can find it cheap, especially because it is really fun area control for 2p (and way more cutthroat & in-your-face than Carc). My wife and I play this one regularly against each other. It's smooth and snappy and always different each game!
I think empty pile end game trigger = number of players seems like natural scaling. That's my house rule if I'm able to pick up this game. Also, anything wrong with equal turns? Maybe reverse turn order as a final tie-breaker.
I really like that idea for scaling the game. Very simple and makes sense to me! I guess I never even thought of finishing out the final round so each player gets equal turns. However, there is sometimes a strategy to be had by ending the game early by emptying out a stack to rush the game end... so maybe that's why the designer chose not to give everyone equal turns?? It would be interesting to try equal turns, though, for sure. Great observation!
Haha yeah this one is really obscure. I would’ve been shocked if anyone guessed it. It’s hard to judge how obvious to be with my hints. Maybe I’ll give a little better hint next time 😅😂😂
