The "Family" rankings kind of already does this. It's tough because ratings are universal between these lists, so the top 100 won't be reshuffled for the family rankings.
Ah, Carcassonne....My first, "This is not your mama's board game," board game. I was hooked on the hobby because of Carcassonne. Space Base, Rajas...I have them all and I love them all. They each have a unique draw that keeps them in my collection.
Carcassone was really my leap off point. More so than Catan. Truly have wonderful memories of just wanting to replay it over and over because i didnt know board games could be like that
That intro... was perfect 🤣 Great list... I agree on most but I would add...Tigris & Euphrates. T&E should not only be back in top 100 but be back on the top 10... and stay there.
My journey beyond standard deck card games was Ticket to Ride, Pandemic, and Catan in that order. I now only enjoy playing TTR, but still gotta respect what all of these games have done for the hobby
The Yellow King and Carcosa from the Cthulhu mythos are rumored to originally be inspired by Gustave Naudad's poem "Carcassonne" so Carcassonne is a Cthulhu themed-game.
Space Base never cracking the top 100 is the most surprising to me. You guys probably know this but the Stats tab has rank history graphs going back to 2006.
Now that Earth is out, I can’t bring myself to play Ares Expedition much. It plays in half the time and is so much smoother with how you activate your cards left to right top to bottom.
@@christaggart5687 I agree with your disagree. Ares feels like an interesting engine builder while meeting map objectives. Earth is "I guess I'll do that action." "I guess I'll play this card."
I agree with Mike that there shouldn't be Legacy games in the top 100. I go farther and think no strictly-campaign games too. I feel like they deserve their own list
I think that Carcassonne should NOT be in the Top 100. I can forgive its boring aesthetic because it has its charm, but here are the actual reasons: 1. The gameplay is boring and repetitive. 2. Even though the tile draw is random, the distribution is not, so anyone staring at the rulebook or who has played multiple times has an advantage (more so if certain expansions are included and certain players have played with them multiple times). It’s not about your strategy improving; it’s about how much you remember, like a test. 3. The scoring is super janky if you include the farmers (which were official rules until the 10th Anniversary edition, though now I suppose it’s a variant). 4. The publisher, Hans Im Gluck, were jerks when it came to the Meeplegate scandal. It was unnecessary for them to have trademarked a name for a component (a name they didn’t even come up with) and then sue a small publisher almost out of business for using that name. They need to know that even though greed may lead to power, openness is the way to innovation. With Carcassonne being as successful as it is, I don’t think they need the extra publicity. There are plenty of amazing tile games that are easy to teach, but Carcassonne is really not the best one of its type. (If we’re ranking BGG suitability on sales, then Monopoly should be number one, even though very few people actually enjoy playing it.)
To add to your Carcassonne comments. If 3 or 4 or maybe 5 people who have never met before realise they are all into board games then what are the games that they could sit down and play right away? I think it's a short list for various reasons such as because different groups have their favourites and some of us have filled our shelves and don't buy so many new games (ahem 😁) etc. But I do think that Carcassonne is one such game (even if you play one of the 'round the world' variants) and is therefore important, along with Catan for sure, and perhaps Azul and Ticket To Ride.
I like your picks except for Roll For The Galaxy. Good game but not Top 100 to me. I'd replace it with The Quest For El Dorado. Approchable, awesome replay, simple yet satisfying, great gateway for deckbuilding.
Well let’s see your joint 100 games to present to the world- games that are the essential doorways to other games, games that are the best in class, you know - your joint best of the best for others.
I think I’m on the other side of ares expedition. The engine building is there, but the game feels like it’s missing identity. It doesn’t have the sense of accomplishment and competition I feel in the original. Even if we were just comparing base games, I would still have to give it to the OG.😊
Mornin, bros! I like your list - I stepped away from just “collecting” games - so my game collection is fairly curated. I’ve actually heard of your games :)
Couldn't agree more about both pandemic and legacy games. Played Pan Legacy Seasons 1 +2, great experiences... but that's 20 to 30 hours playtime and done. OG pandemic (with On The Brink xpac) is 100+ hours and still going. Great value, and that's hard to beat.
Thanks for the BTS of thumbnail creation. I agree with Mike’s take that a legacy game shouldn’t be in the Top 100. I also wish that list had a disclaimer on it saying all the things you both mentioned - these are medium to heavy games for folks way deep in the hobby, don’t start here! I made that mistake and I think it skewed me toward heavy games from the beginning.
About Pandemic. I think it suffers what any game with lots of expansions suffers. Vote dilution. About top 100: It's about what games people think are good. There should be a separate "Greatest Games Ever." That list would take into account the affect a game had in the industry at the time it was introduced. Thus Monopoly, which most people critize for having bad game play, would make the list because, for so long, it was THE game. Catan, which many people consider a "solved" game, would also be there because it, along with Carcassone, brought Euro games to a wider public and reignited the game industry.
I think that the BGG top 100 games should be taken with a pinch of salt. It is what suits your gaming needs and likes not opinion on what may be or is the best, cult of the new. Also, some of these games mentioned have been at the top but they have slipped back because they simply are not new games anymore. There is a geeklist with a chart of all top 100 games going back to when Die Macher was given the I.D. Of No 1 game on its database. I think it is about time an alternative list is produced, for example Rhado runs through has his own suggestions.
I think whenever you invest in a board game you are putting your time and money into an experience. So I think it's fair to say that Legacy games have a higher bar to clear to make it into the top 100 but I don't think any rule should be made that arbitrarily excludes one type of game and suggesting that it should seems to be completely opposed to the spirit of this list. If we had a top 100 that had never seen a Legacy game on it and was saturated with party games we might just be having the opposite conversation about needing a few on the list. It's also possible that some mechanisms don't have wide enough appeal to make the cut but if the top 100 is a meritocracy then that shouldn't matter. The issue is that it skews to certain niches more than others because fans of the game rate it highly and most people who aren't into those niche games just never try them.
I completely agree with #1. I played Ares first. I think if I had played TM first, I would not have play Ares. It completely replaced Race/Roll/Puerto Rico. I've played them on BGA a few times with friends since playing Ares, but I'm always wishing I were playing Ares.
Love Space Base, love Rajas (at least for inspiring parts of Ark Nova), but Carcassonne is a relic of the past. Almost as much as Dominion in that these games inspired other games that are just infinitely better. I've already sold Ares Edition, as the more I played it, the more I realized it was just an inferior (and more broken) version of Race for the Galaxy. I agree that Roll for the Galaxy is much easier to teach than Race....but if players just spend 10 minutes learning what the symbols mean in Race (and I know that the symbols are the enormous and only slight against Race) you'll enjoy one of the best board games ever created.
I think it would be interesting to see the rankings if every single person who played every game ranked every game in every metric to see where games would fall. And also that people wouldn't go in and vote against games just because they didn't like it.
game heaviness is very subjective. I've had tapestry for 6 years, still don't know what i'm doing. But i can work out a Lacerda in a few plays. being familiar with his mechanics helps though
@@coltonbeatty6117 yes, some more than others like Galerist, becomes very dry, but Lisboa and Kanban EV is the exact opposite, i get caught up in the theme. It's 'me' issue
Rajas of the Ganges, i don’t like the dice rolling mechanic and the theme, the art, those wierd images of wierd gods and stuff puts me off so much that i would never table a game like that 😅. So much no for me.

BGG needs to add a Top 100 Games for New Gamers ranking and add Gateway/Gateway+ Game keywords.

No complaints with choices 10 through 2, but while i (and my wife) really enjoy Ares Expedition, the OG version is the best.
Fun list, great video. I would add Kingdomino!
totally agree about Ares Expedition. I'm happy someone else feels that way about it too, most reviews I have seen don't agree that Ares is better.
Mike, was that broccoli in your garden? Looking good! Mine looks the same!
Sure is!!
I want to play games with the brothers. I bet it’s hilarious.
Money pit, one of my favourite old comedic movie. Almost as old as me :). Other one that i love to see in TV is Barefoot in the Park
It is shocking that Codenames isn't in Top 100 - many I agree with here but I'm with you the most on the party game masterpiece.
